Hiking all 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks is a difficult task. Hiking all 46 High Peaks in two months is an even more difficult task. Hiking all 46 High Peaks in two months completely barefoot seems like an impossible task, right? For my guest this week, however, it was his reality. In this edition of the Summit Sessions I'll speak with Bethany Garretson and Katie Rhodes, who are less than a week off the trail after completing the first ever officially documented female unsupported thru hike of the 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks, setting an official FKT at just over 7 days. A terrific story of fun, perseverance, friendship, and grit. You'll want to hear this story. One of Katie's main sources of strength in arduous times is the memory of her brother Tim, who took his own life on January 1, 2011 after a long battle with mental health and a severe neurological condition. This is one reason we decided to participate in 46 Climbs for Suicide Prevention to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) as part of our attempt. In the twilight, as the sun starts to dip behind the mountains, and its golden light kisses the surrounding summits, darkness engulfs the valleys below. The sounds of the forest awaken as the moon rises and a wailing can be heard for miles. A distinctive wailing that to some, may just sound like the wind in the trees…but it's something more. Something sinister. But sometimes one wrong step down one wrong path is all it takes to find yourself face to face…with the Nye Wolf.Written by James AppletonOriginal concept created by Peter HickeyMusic written by Andres Soto, and AudionautixWarm up this Fall with some delicious hot coffee from Recess Coffee. In this Columbus Day Weekend Summit Session special I had the honor of speaking with Monika and David from the Leave No Trace organization all about the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace, LNT consulting in the Adirondack Park, and even went on a "virtual" hike up Mt Marcy to put those 7 principles to practice out on the trail. This was a fun episode filled with information on how to responsibly and respectfully venture into the outdoors. It's October and that means it's time to have some spooky fun here in the outdoors of the Adirondack Mountains. This is an episode I've wanted to do for a long time, Bigfoot in the Blue Line. The Blue Line is another nickname for the Adirondacks and in this week's October Session I'll hear a possible Bigfoot encounter from longtime outdoorsman and NYS Guide, Devin Peterson, and we'll discuss his encounter, and read and discuss many other reported encounters from right here inside the Blue Line. A perfect episode for a chilly, spooky, Autumn night. Warm up this Fall with some delicious hot coffee from Recess Coffee. In this Summit Session episode I'll speak with licenced Adirondack Guide, Allison Cascade Kozel, and we'll discuss all the tips and tricks she has learned over the years guiding families with kids out on the trail. Allison also started hiking in the Adirondack high peaks when she was just five years old and became an ADK 46'er a mere two weeks after her 13'th birthday; so she brings a unique perspective and experience level to this episode, having hiked both with kids and as a kid. As a father who loves to hike with his two young daughters I can say hiking with them can be one of the greatest experiences possible and I hope this episode helps you get out on the trails with your own kids. It can feel like a daunting task, but start small and work your way up. If you're planning to hike with young kids for the first time you'll want to take notes because Allison shares incredible insight on how to have a successful hike with kids.To hire Allison to take you or your family on a guided trip in the Adirondacks visit www.muddybootsguide.comDrink coffee? The Soda Range. This 6-mile loop ridge trail definitely qualifies as a "less traveled trail" in the Adirondack Park and what was supposed to be a quick, simple, afternoon hike on a trail I'd yet to experience, turned into the single most painful and hardest day I've ever experienced in the woods. Regardless of my situation out there however, it really is a great little trail.Drink coffee? Of course you do. In this week's follow up to last week's Supported FKT Attempt episode with Adirondack native and LaSportiva athlete, Sarah Keyes, I'll speak with the head of Sarah's support crew, Jay Whitbourne, and find out everything that went on behind-the-scenes as Sarah hiked all 46 high peaks of the Adirondacks in under five days during her Supported FKT attempt. What her crew did during this attempt is equally as impressive and interesting. If you haven't heard Sarah Keyes episode yet check that out first then circle back to this one for the entire story.Going camping soon? Great!
