The HBS hosts discuss Jordan Peele's special brand of horror with the author of Stepford Daughters, Johanna Isaacson. For a long time, or at least it seemed, horror films were considered to be beneath serious scrutiny. The problematic politics of such films were all too apparent in the violence brought to bear on women's bodies in countless slasher films. The racial politics were not much better; the cliche of the black character dying first exists for a reason. Gradually this changed, though, first with such groundbreaking critical studies such  as Carol Glover's Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film and Robin Wood's “An Introduction to the American Horror film.”In the past few years, horror films themselves have changed as well. Most notably Jordan Peele has made three films dealing with our “social demons”: Get Out (2017), Us (2019), and Nope (2022). To talk with us about horror, the films of Jordan Peele,  and how horror can be used to develop our critical understanding of capitalism, racism, and patriarchy, we have invited Johanna Isaacson author of Stepford Daughters: Weapons for Feminists in Contemporary Horror.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-109-jordan-peeles-horror-with-johanna-isaacson-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! Victoria Nelson saw it first: Popular culture teems with occult ideas, vestiges of bygone belief, fragments of ancient magic disguised as common entertainment. Her 2001 work The Secret Life of Puppets is in many ways the ur-text of weird studies, so prescient and probing it is even more relevant now than it was when it first appeared. In episode 128 (https://www.weirdstudies.com/128), Phil and JF discussed Nelson's wonderful first novel Neighbor George (2021). Episode Highlights: We talk about the character of Jade as the broken and beautiful Final Girl that we do not deserve, but that we so desperately need. Toni praises the use of the extra-credit essays between chapters, and Katherine admits that they were brilliant additions but reminded her a bit too much of grading. And we explore the ways that this novel forces us to confront both the power and limitations of this genre we so desperately love.  A Dose of Scholarship: If you enjoy Jones' investigation into the Final Girl, we encourage you to read Carol J. Elas são icônicas, inteligentes e carismáticas. Today we have the distinct privilege of discussing horror cinema, culture, and politics with Kendall Phillips, professor in the department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies at Syracuse University. Kendall's work focuses on the ways popular culture intersects with discursive and affective tensions within society, with a focus on public memory, controversy, and popular cinema. Among his other work, Kendall is the author of three books on the rhetoric of horror films, the most recent of which is entitled A Place of Darkness: The Rhetoric of Horror in Early American Cinema. Our conversation touches on the ways that horror films have historically reflected the fears of the societies that produce them, pushing at the sensitive edges of controversial and dark topics. We discuss some early iterations of the horror film genre before taking an in-depth look at the cultural themes contained in the films of George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven (all directors studied in Kendall's 2012 book, Dark Directions). Finally, we ruminate on whether we are currently experiencing a "third golden age" of horror cinema, and what kinds of contemporary cultural fears could be driving the commercial success of horror films in the past decade.Films Referenced in this EpisodeLe Manoir du Diable [released in U.S. as The Haunted Castle] (1896)The James Boys in Missouri (1908)The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)Dracula (1931)Frankenstein (1931)Night of the Living Dead (1968)Dawn of the Dead (1978)Day of the Dead (1985)Land of the Dead (2005)The Thing (1982)Halloween (1978)E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)The Last House on the Left (1972)The Hills Have Eyes (1977)A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)Scream (1996)Paranormal Activity (2007)Insidious (2010)The Conjuring (2013)The Babadook (2014)Get Out (2017)Hereditary (2018)Us (2019)Midsommar (2019)The Witch (2015)The Lighthouse (2019)Gwen (2018)The Ritual (2017)Ready or Not (2019)Annabelle (2014)Joker (2019)Works Cited in this EpisodeCalafell, B.
