There were no visual effects; all effects are either practical, or Mary's patients are members of the real-life body modification community. The role of Mary was written specifically for Katharine Isabelle. The script was written while the Soskas were trying to sell their film Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and it mirrors some of the experiences that they had in the film industry, such as meeting sleazy people that seem initially reputable.ReleaseAmerican Mary premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival on 27 August 2012. It received a limited theatrical run in the U.S. on 31 May 2013 and became available on video on demand on 16 May 2013.Home MediaIt was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 21 January 2013 by Universal Pictures UK. The release includes a behind-the-scenes documentary with cast and crew as well as a feature titled An American Mary in London, which detailed the world premiere.ReceptionThe film received generally mixed reviews, with praise for Isabelle's performance and the film's use of black comedy, but criticism for the film's abrupt ending. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports that 62% of 52 surveyed critics gave positive reviews; the average rating was 5.9/10. The site's consensus reads: "It suffers a bit from some uneven acting and an underwhelming climax, but American Mary utilizes pitch black humor and striking visuals to deliver gory, freaky thrills for body horror enthusiasts".It has score of 46 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 15 reviews. Andy Webster of The New York Times designated it a NYT Critics' Pick and wrote that American Mary "combines gore, quiet dread, feminist conviction and a visual classicism, often using a red palette, with impressive, unbelabored dexterity." Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out New York rated the film 2/5 and wrote that the film starts out promising but ends up "going for the gross-out". In a mixed review, Dennis Harvey of Variety called the film "outre and entertaining" but "doesn't develop all its narrative and thematic ideas to the fullest." Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film "turn[s] slack and unfocused after an enticingly lurid, wickedly tense first half."#americanmary #beyonce #prettyhurts #bodymodification #surgery #plasticsurgery #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic

More women! More horror! Directors. And movies. We're right in the middle of a three-part series on horror movies directed by women! This episode features very strong evidence that sometimes dead is better, a young girl who dreams of creepy storybook characters while rabbits run wild in Australia, western expansion and cannibalism in the 19th-century, and a promising medical student driven to pursue an unconventional surgical career. Stephen King should be ashamed of himself. He gave a perfectly respectful graveyard honoring animals such a bad rap. It's a place where the dead speak. But you certainly do not want to go beyond, to the place where the dead walk! Director Mary Lambert takes us there and back again, in the first feature film adaptation of Pet Sematary (1989).Political tension, and rabbit panic are running wild in Australia in 1957. A young girl struggles with forbidden friendships, the death of her grandmother, the threat of her pet rabbit being taken away, and even her own imagination. Childhood proves to be a very challenging experience for Celia (1989), directed by Ann Turner. It's manifest destiny time in the United States. But some of these characters are definitely not who you would hope to encounter if you were heading west in the mid-1800s. Director Antonia Bird serves up a darkly comedic adventure of gruesome cannibalism, with some truly unsettling music setting the tone, in Ravenous (1999)!Ah, Katharine Isabelle is featured in the role of Mary Mason. A promising young medical student, who uses her skill to perform underground body modification surgeries.  But why would she leave medical school for such a pursuit? Well, money. And revenge. The Soska Sisters invite you to spend a little time under the knife, with American Mary (2012).

For my wife's birthday I bought her a beautiful fridge freezer. I know it isn't much, but you should have seen her face light up when she opened it.*In the real world, the humble fridge is a purely functional home appliance which transfers its internal heat to its external environment; cooling its interior in order to lower the reproduction rate of bacteria thereby maintaining the optimal temperature range for preservation of perishable food. In Hollywood however, a refrigerator may be a portal to hell, a gateway to another dimension, a fighters training camp or even a temporary nuclear bomb shelter. Thankfully we're (mostly) talking movies here at Bad Dads so we're sparing you any discussion we might have had about this utilitarian white good in favour of discussing the Top 5 Movie Fridges. Our main feature tells a story as old as time itself, that of a talented and penniless surgical student, who when applying for a job in a strip club instead finds herself drawn into the fascinating and unusual world of extreme body modification before enacting a terrible revenge on the man who wronged her. Yes we've heard it all before but the Canadian twins Jen and Sylvia Soska (a.k.a. The Twisted Twins) bring a much needed feminine voice to the horror genre with their 2012 crime-revenge-thriller American Mary.Far less wholesome is this weeks kids show, Blue Peter. From defecating pachyderms, subtle Marxist political messaging and cocaine-fuelled presenters through to more virtuous subjects such as viewer submitted art work and the besting of challenges thrust upon the eager presenters, this hotbed of depravity and staple of British children's television for more than 60 years has content that is wide ranging. We're desperate for human contact! So come join us on Twitter - @dads_film - on Facebook or via email to baddadsjsy@gmail.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads*not my joke, I don't want to be done for copyright in-fridge-ment.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A number of things are interesting about Jen and Sylvia Soska, or simply better known as the Soska sisters. First, they are twins. Second, they are from Canada. Third, they are sibling film makers. Fourth, they are female in a male dominated industry. Fifth, they are genre film makers. And finally after a festival circuit run, their second feature length film, American Mary, has been released to the mass audience. Getting their start in the pseudo-retro-grindhouse wave with their first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the sisters come back with a dark tale of a woman who has many issues of any early twenty-something. Mary's a med student who happens to live day to day trying to pay for her living expenses never mind the horrendous amount of money colleges sap from middle class families. As her resources dry up, she ends up in a place that she never expected. Part horror film, part character study, American Mary is an interesting movie that shows the talent of these two director/screenwriting sisters. The film stars Katherine Isabelle (from Gingersnaps) as Mary, a brooding, sardonic, and somewhat disheartened individual facing real life pressures who lands up both as a victim in one set of circumstances while being a dark menacing character in other circumstances. Dark Discussions discusses this highly anticipated horror film and how it stands up to all of the hype. May marks a great milestone in horror as the much anticipated American Mary (finally!) gets a limited release in US theaters this Friday, May 31st! To support the momentum, Hannah and Ashlee got a chance to yuck it up with directors Jen & Sylvia Soska along with their supporting gems Tristan Risk and Paula Lindberg about the film. The film was described best here: “The horror version of Legally Blonde”!!! Hannah and Ashlee also talk body horror in regards to 2000's Ginger Snaps. Both women dig not only the themes of feminism, menstruation, transformation, and lycanthropy but also Katherine Isabelle's awesome performance. They wanted to show her some shine for being the formidable Mary. And Ashlee would like to mention some of her other favorite films in the body horror genre: John Carpenter's The Thing, Martyrs, Hellbound: Hellraiser 2, and Videodrome. Some of Hannah's include: The Brood, Basket Case, Alien, Frankenhooker, anything Cronenberg, Hellraiser, Bad Biology, May, Dead Ringers, Audition, Re-Animator, and The Fly. “Twisted Twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are back with their stunning follow-up to the indie hit DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Eli Roth and Clive Barker are huge fans of the Canadian twins, who are the "Next Big Thing in Horror."AMERICAN MARY is the story of a medical student named Mary who grows broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele. Appearances are everything. AMERICAN MARY is available on VOD and will be in theaters on May 31st. The Soska sisters have always loved film. Since childhood, they have been heavily involved in acting, with a special place in their twisted little hearts for horror. They trained in martial arts, and attended a film school that included an intensive stunt program. For one of their final film projects, they prepared to do a short film only to have their funding for the project pulled. Undeterred, they went ahead with the project on their own assembling cast and crew, doing production on their own time, and paying for it out of their own pockets. They decided to make their short film a fake trailer, in the trend of Rodriguez and Tarantino's GRINDHOUSE, which, at the time, was in theaters. The school had a list of things too inappropriate to be included and they made sure to include everything on that list and then some. The title of that trailer was DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, which went on to become their debut film - they wrote, directed, produced, starred in, and performed the stunts.
