Our great friend Tim Grierson from Screen International stops by to discuss two extremely movies on this brief, midweek pop-in at Breakfast All Day. First, we have an early review of the deeply unsettling horror movie "Longlegs," starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. It's in theaters Friday. Next, we have a late review of "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," the first part of Kevin Costner's sprawling Western epic. Chapter 2 was supposed to come out in August, but now has been pulled from the schedule. Who knows if there will even be Chapters 3 and 4 at this point? If there are, we'll review them, because we're professionals, dammit. "Horizon" is in theaters now. Alonso will be back on Friday for "Fly Me to the Moon," "Sing Sing" and Movie News LIVE! We look forward to seeing you then. We love starting our day with Coffee Bros.! The Dark Roast and Brazil are among our favorites, but we've enjoyed every roast we've tried. It's another Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day, with two movies from the daring folks at Neon. First, Christy and Alonso review Alice Rohrwacher's "La Chimera," starring Josh O'Connor as a grave robber with a magical ability to find hidden Etruscan artifacts. It's in theaters starting March 29. Then, Christy and the always entertaining Tim Grierson of Screen International offer a spoiler discussion of "Immaculate," the Sydney Sweeney horror movie that opened over the weekend. So much happens that we knew we had to go in-depth, especially on that shocking ending. Thanks for checking in with us!
It's the '80s all over again here at Breakfast All Day -- but then again, did it ever stop being the '80s? First, Christy and Alonso review "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," which is not good, but at least it does a better job of blending the old and the new than 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" did. It's in theaters. Then we review "Road House," a remake of the 1989 cult favorite with Jake Gyllenhaal taking over the Patrick Swayze role. It's streaming on Prime Video. Finally, our good friend Tim Grierson from Screen International fills in on a review of "Immaculate," the new Sydney Sweeney horror movie which makes being a nun in Italy seem super dangerous. It's in theaters. And we start the whole episode off as we always do on Fridays with Movie News LIVE! Christy flies solo this time while Alonso's off recording his audiobook. Among the topics of discussion are trailers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," "Furiosa" and the "Star Wars" prequel series "The Acolyte." Thanks so much for sharing some of your time with us and have a great weekend.

Launching Season Six, we go behind the scenes of the woman-strong Irish film Lies We Tell, a brooding tale of angels and demons, light and shadow, manners and mores, family secrets and family crimes, which The Guardian called “a tightly laced, elegantly cut gothic period drama.”A total rethinking of Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu's 1864 novel Uncle Silas, the film centers on Maud Ruthyn, brilliantly portrayed by the rising young star Agnes O'Casey, great-granddaughter of the playwright, Sean O'Casey, who is trapped in the sprawling family estate Knowl (filmed at Ardgillan Castle in County Dublin) and by “the law being made and enforced by men.”The Guardian called her delivery “as sharp as a steak knife” and Screen International wrote, “A singular performance by Agnes O'Casey gives the pretty period piece a serrated edge.”Our episode starts with a prelude from Maedhbh Fiona Mc Cullagh, director of Washington, DC's Solas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival, which kicks off on Feb. 29th with Lies We Tell. Then Director Lisa Mulcahy and screenwriter Elisabeth Gooch talk about how they transformed a century-and-a-half-old Gothic period drama into a compelling woman-centered story relevant to today. We learn why Elizabeth found the 1864 Maude so annoying and Lisa talks about the budget pressures that led to the film's signature candle-lit ambiance, creating what Film Journal called “a tale of flawlessness and immersive beauty.”Then you'll meet Agnes O'Casey and hear about her UK upbringing, her Trinity College Dublin theatre training, her embrace of the Sean O'Casey lineage, her TV breakthrough in Ridley Road, her recent roles in films with the likes of Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Stephen Rea, and a Cillian Murphy film yet to be released, and the challenges of being on camera in almost every scene of Lies We Tell.Join us to meet the makers and learn the backstory of the brilliant, woman-forwards Lies We Tell.Links:Lies We TellWebsiteIMDbAgnes O'CaseyWikipedia IMDbPortfolio ShowreelLisa MulcahyWebsiteIMDbTwitterElisabeth GoochIMDbMaedhbh Fiona Mc Cullagh LinkedInTwitterSolas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival

My guest this week is Elhum Shakerifar, a BAFTA nominated producer and winner of the 2017 Women in Film & TV's BBC Factual Award and one of Screen International's 2018 #Brit50 Producers on the Rise. Elhum's multi-award-winning credits include The Reluctant Revolutionary (Sean McAllister, 2012), The Runner (Saeed Farouky, 2013), multi-award-winning A Syrian Love Story (Sean McAllister, 2015), Even When I Fall (Sky Neal and Kate McLarnon, 2017), BIFA winner for Best Documentary, Almost Heaven (Carol Salter, 2017), ISLAND (Steven Eastwood, 2017), Of Love & Law (Hikaru Toda, 2017) and Ayouni (Yasmin Fedda 2020). Her work has been broadcast internationally and screened at festivals including Berlinale, IDFA, Rotterdam and CPH:DOX. Elhum was also a recipient of the 2016 BFI Vision Award. I was both excited and nervous to speak to Elhum because she has produced a body of work that is interrogative and curious and empathic and I wanted to come to the conversation with that same energy, knowing that we would likely cover some complex topics. And we did, we spoke about the vulnerabilities and ethical considerations inherent to making documentary, how she prioritises relationships and intentionality as opposed to access, what a greater level of respect for documentary filmmaking would look like, why and how she distributes her own films through her company Hakawati and also how she persists, to keep telling stories that are meaningful and difficult and heartfelt. It was a really gratifying conversation and one that I'm really glad to have had, so I hope you enjoy it just as much.
