Risa August is an Ironman Triathlete and an extraordinary cyclist known and highly respected for her love of pushing her physical limits. Risa is no stranger to intense challenges, having completed 500-mile bike tours and conquered mountains in the US and Nepal. Then, Risa's life comes to a crashing halt. Her body is collapsing, and for good reason. She is diagnosed with a rare pituitary disease, a brain tumour that has been left unchecked for a decade. After undergoing life-threatening brain surgery and trying to live inside a body that can barely function, Risa chooses a different path. She reaches into her bucket list, and against all her doctors' advice; she trains and embarks on a 41-day, 3,000 km bike tour from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Coast Highway. While the old Risa could have effortlessly conquered such a ride, the new Risa found herself entangled in a body that felt unfamiliar and accompanied by an unwelcome companion, her brain tumour she named Bubba. Pedalling through rain, physical pain, and the haunting echoes of her memories, Risa confronts a challenge unlike any other. Risa questions whether the woman she once was and knew would ever resurface or if this is the person she was destined to become. An extraordinary story of recovery, resilience, renovation and reinvention to begin your New Year. To reach Risa August: https://www.risaaugust.com

Transcript: https://bit.ly/AIAe048 JOHNNY AGAR, 29 years old from Rockford, MI, gained international attention when he walked a mile in his church's annual 5k. That sounds like an odd reason for fame, except for the reality of Johnny's severe cerebral palsy. Even with a lifetime of physical therapy, before the 5k the longest distance he'd ever been able to walk was twenty-three steps! Since that incredible feat, Johnny and his father, Jeff, have partnered in hundreds of races, including the infamous Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, which was chronicled by NBC. Johnny has been featured on The Today Show, Inside Edition, People, USA Today, NBC Nightly News, Huffington Post, and ESPN's Sportscenter. His tenacity and indelible spirit have caught the attention of Olympic swimming great Michael Phelps and the sports apparel company Under Armour—so much so that UA placed him in two of their commercials, one with Phelps and one with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Now Johnny gives motivational speeches to inspire others to overcome their challenges and chase their dreams. Among his other roles, Johnny serves as Athletic Ambassador for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. He's proud to have earned a dual major BA in Sports Management and Business Administration from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.JEFF AGAR, more commonly referred to as “Johnny's Dad”, was never an endurance athlete and only 12 or so years ago had never completed a 5K race. His main goal is helping Johnny achieve his dreams. Jeff is married to Becki and together they have three children: Johnny, Annie & Gracy.BECKI AGAR fundraises and advocates for organizations that have been instrumental in helping special needs children be as independent as possible on their journeys through life. But she will tell you, her proudest accomplishment is being the mother to her three beautiful children, Johnny, Annie, and Gracy.Read the book:The Impossible Mile: The Power in Living Life One Step at a TimeCheck out Johnny's Pass: Johnny's Pass (johnnyspass.com)Connect with the Agars:JOHNNY: WEBSITE: TeamAgar.comTWITTER: @agar_johnINSTAGRAM: @officialjohn_agarFACEBOOK: Johnny AgarJEFF: WEBSITE: TeamAgar.comTWITTER: @JeffAgarINSTAGRAM: @agarjeffFACEBOOK: Jeff AgarBECKI:WEBSITE: TeamAgar.comTWITTER: @agarbeckiINSTAGRAM: @beckiagarFACEBOOK: Becki AgarConnect with the Rocky Mountain ADA Center at RockyMountainADA.org or find us on social media. In this episode of the Postural Restoration Podcast i am joined by Craig Depperschmidt, DPT, PRC. Craig grew up in Loveland, CO and finished his degree in Integrative Physiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After spending a summer biking across the country, he headed to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he graduated with distinction from Northern Arizona University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. From an early age, due to an active lifestyle, Craig became aware how a restriction or injury in one area of his body effected his whole system, and through multiple sports and associated injuries he learned the value of an integrated approach. In 2011 Craig attended the Advanced Integration course and for the first time in over a decade, was able to run without pain through his feet, shins, and low back. Craig credits this moment in his personal and professional journey, to a single technique, the Standing Supported Wall Reach, which for the first time allowed him to feel the effects of respiration in the thorax throughout his lower extremities. From this point on he was hooked. In 2010 the clinic Craig work for at the time hosted both the Postural Respiration and Myokinematic Restoration courses and this exposure provided a foundation for the rest of Craig's PRI journey. One particular statement regarding the observations of a Left AIC pattern, pushed Craig to prove it within his own clinical setting, and from there his love for the PRI primary object tests was born. From these first two courses Craig has since aimed to perform the associated tests with every patient who came through his door. This A-B-A experimental design of performing the tests, followed by technique intervention and finally re-testing, became standard for Craig and is something he is still passionate about as a provider, mentor, and faculty member today.Craig and I go on to discuss how he uses a PRI approach within his population of clientele, primarily consisting of endurance athletes and weekend warriors. Craig's own experiences as a triathlete, endurance runner and cyclist allow him to connect with his patients on a personal level. We go on to discuss how to appropriately introduce the concepts of sensory integration and positional education within this population and some of the ways Craig helps his patients make sense of themselves, particularly in the environments and spaces that they may not train or perform in. Craig is also Bikefit trained and uses his passion and knowledge to integrate PRI into cycling.Craig became a PRC provider in 2012 and through attending PRI courses met his current colleague Brian Benjamin, DPT, PRC. Brian and Craig would go on to create ProActive PT in Fort Collins, CO. Today they are surrounded by an integrative team with the opportunity to mentor not only those interested in PT schooling but also the general public through several yearly events within their community. Outside of his community in Fort Collins Craig is excited to be joining the PRI Faculty and will begin teaching Myokinematic Restoration in 2023. These communities of PRI practitioners and mentorship from faculty and others, have allowed Craig to share his passions with others and we are so excited for him to be able to share them with all of you!
Susan Gold is magical. Leaving her little town behind the morning after High School graduation, Susan rarely looked back. While in college as a junior at Ohio University, she created an internship in arts management navigating her way to her dream, NYC. Her experience with performing artists like Bill T. Jones, and Paul Zaloom led her into mainstream entertainment after college, first at the global talent agency, ICM and later at Fox. She became known for attaching celebrity talent to projects which led her into producing for television and film and on to Los Angeles. Managing risk is her forte and making in-roads, is her namesake. She's met personal and professional challenges with integrity told in her memoir publishing later this month. Her message inspires us to step outside our comfort zones to achieve success in all aspects of our lives. For more information, visit https://www.susangold.us/.

Hey, welcome back. We have to get back to the basics so no funny business with seltzers this week although we reserve the right to become a seltzercast. That time has come again as we announce the Goose Island Bourbon Stouts of the year. This is our third time doing this and the selection returns with a coffee offering, the first since 2017. Some good stuff in this lineup that drops on Black Friday. A government official in trouble? Yes a Virginia ABC official has been busted for profiting off insider information with the state's rare bourbon allocations. He betrayed the beloved bourbon community for profit. Seems about right. David in his attempt to avoid real sports completed a Triathalon and didn't finish last. He was close but the main thing is he paid his money and finished with a medal, that he paid for. His efforts earned him a little treat of Fibonacci Brewing Company this week and their The Noid. Job well done David. Gary had to detox from all the seltzer so it was back to bourbon. He may or may not have caved to peer pressure that Uncle Mike put on him by calling him names. This week the combat sports inspired Puncher's Chance was a surprisingly nice change up from the bubbly frat boy drinks of weeks past. Good morning, it's Wednesday, June 9th and this is The Herald Review's podcast, the Daily Chirp. We're excited to bring you a closer look at top stories, events in the community, local history, sports, and more. Today - A bi-national oasis has opened in the desert. It's a place where cultures can unite through art, language, music and a little coffee. Before we begin, some local history. Have you been to the Horseshoe cafe in Benson? Founded in 1936, the place is rich in history -- it's been featured in movies and has the longest continuous neon sign inside. Interestingly, many passer-by's claim to have seen ghosts. You can even have a drink from the Palomino room and hear stories of unexplained shadows, footsteps and voices inside the cafe. Today's history is brought to you by Benson Hospital. The team at Benson Hospital is always working towards building a healthier community. For example, when the Benson Food Pantry needed a new home, they worked with them to find one, and their staff even helped them apply for grants to support the mission. You can learn more about everything they're doing for our community by following them on Facebook at facebook.com/bensonhospital. Also, The Daily Chirp podcast is giving away 5 Amazon Echo Dots - one every month now through July. You can enter for your chance to win twice a day! It's a place where cultures can unite through art, language, music and a little coffee. Welcome to El Centro Community Center in the heart of Naco, Arizona, just steps away from the Mexican border and Naco, Sonora. Its founders, Lori Keyne and Seth Polley, told us the mission is to strengthen the community by celebrating both cultures. At the same time they'll be teaching youth different skills through art, music, language and entrepreneurship. El Centro — which means "the center" in Spanish — is also a place where people from both sides of the border can hang out and discuss whatever is on their minds, especially after the COVID-infused months kept people apart. Polley is a history teacher at Bisbee High, and a former reverend of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bisbee. And Keyne is a music teacher at Cochise College and the founder of Concerts Without Borders and the Bi-National Arts Institute. They said It'll be a place to connect. On Friday afternoon that "place" was starting to come alive as Polley and Keyne opened the doors of El Centro on Towner Avenue. Keyne said her dream was to secure a space where youth from both sides of the border could gather, but also learn a few things while doing so, such as language, art, music and job skills. The community center, painted in bright colors and located next to GSS Racing on Towner, includes a front room with several comfortable chairs and a counter area where guests can get a cup of espresso. Several back rooms will be set up for art, language and music lessons. A spacious side yard includes a tortilla-maker built by Polley and a picnic table. At the moment, El Centro has enlisted three guitar instructors, one of them a local, Keyne said. Classes will be in person and virtually. Spanish and English will be taught through Polley's Sonoran Language Institute. And teens interested in becoming entrepreneurs can learn those skills by running the coffee shop. Jesus Moreno, from Naco, Sonora, and a student at Bisbee High, was helping out at El Centro on Friday. Moreno, who's 17, was learning how to hook up the espresso machine along with his friends Saul and Paul Carillo, also Bisbee High students. Rev. Rosa Brown, the associate for Hispanic Ministries at Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix who chairs the Bi-National Arts Institute board, said El Centro will be key in connecting with youth from both sides of the border. Brown, who was also involved with Concerts Without Borders, said El Centro is envisioned as a secure place where youth can share ideas. Its location, just a few feet from the Mexican border, is not by accident. For now, El Centro is in its fledgling stage as Keyne, Polley and volunteers begin to set hours of operation, as well as schedules for music and language classes. Anyone interested in volunteering at El Centro or donating resources of any kind can call 520-678-9067. - Thanks for listening, before we continue, a quick message from our sponsors, Prestige Family Living. According to the program director, Dan Barrera, the Vacation Bible School offered by First Baptist Church of Benson drew about 140 children this year. There, the children do hands-on projects and rotate through about six different stations where activities relate to Jesus and a biblical theme. The weeklong Bible school is free. Kids are there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. working on crafts, participating in recreational activities, bouncing around to music and excavating for relics through Tom Olson's popular Geology for Kids. The excavations were a favorite activity. Children of all ages sat quietly in sectioned-off areas of a sand box and dug down with a trowel in search of hidden artifacts and other treasures. Each day focuses on a different verse in the Bible, with activities that relate to that verse. Several churches throughout Cochise County hold Vacation Bible School. But last year, most churches canceled because of COVID. But this year churches in Sierra Vista, Douglas and Willcox are planning to have Vacation Bible School, as planned. It's time to start training for the Triathalon! Swim 800 yards, bike 13 miles, and run 5 kilometers at Sierra Vista's 20th Annual Hummingbird Triathlon! You can compete as an individual, or as a member of a female, male, or coed team in this chip-timed race. It's open to ages 10 and up. Be sure to register early to save some money and guarantee your event T-shirt and swag from our sponsors. The race starts and finishes at The Cove. - Finally, today we're remembering the life of Alex H. Castro of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Alex was born on October 6, 1928, in Prescott. Throughout 47 years of working for Safeway Inc. while working up the corporate ladder he found his niche as managing stores. He was recognized as the longest lasting store manager when he retired in 1992 in Sierra Vista. Alex married the love of his life, Mary G. Castro who was also born and raised in Prescott. They have been married for 70 years. He will always be remembered as “Mr. Safeway” to all who knew him. He served his community and was an active member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. He was one of the founders of St. Vincent De Paul. A member of the Knights of Columbus since the age of 18. A former member of the Lions Club and Elks Club throughout Arizona. He was an avid sports fan of all sports but truly an Arizona Wildcat. His passion was playing golf. He had the “Biggest Loving Heart” for all his family and was the true Patriarch. Alex will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate his life. - Thanks for tuning in to the Herald Review podcast today, join us again on Friday! Endurance sports can help personally and professionally as they teach people how to take on adversity, handle challenges, combat stress, and, what's more, have fun.I can say, with confidence, that none of the 12 Hike team has that endurance sports build or mentality, we are deeply impressed with people that do. Talking with people like Jennifer gives you a better understanding of what it takes to push yourself to the absolute limit and then push a little harder.IG: https://www.instagram.com/jenstrongmccon/https://jenniferstrongmccon.com/
