This week, we talked to a couple of folks who just successfully finished Race Across America: Brian Hetherington and Alyssa Godesky! Brian raced as part of a four-person team called Team One Life, and they raised money for a charity called Special Love. Alyssa, herself an accomplished professional triathlete and ultrarunner, coached Brian and served as the crew chief during the race. We talked about training, fueling, logistics, and some of the unexpected difficulties they faced on their way from California to New Jersey.

Thank you to Alyssa Godesky for coming onto the show. One of our more accomplished guests, Alyssa has placed on the podium at the 2022 USARA National Championship, has eight top-5 professional finishes at the Ironman distance, and holds multiple Fastest Known Times (FKT's) including on the New Hampshire 48 High Peaks, Adirondack 46 High Peaks and Vermont's Long Trail (273 miles). Ready to set some goals for 2024? Then listen to this episode, where hosts Dimity and Sarah WF bring on pro triathlete, coach, and adventure seeker Alyssa Godesky, who shares how she approaches going after the next big thing. From timing it right (hint: patience is key!) to setting realistic expectations, Alyssa goes over how she works with her athletes to earmark and ultimately achieve goals big and small. First, though, Sarah WF shares about how she parlayed her marathon fitness (and post marathon frustration) into one of her fastest 5Ks in years, and then Alyssa pops on to talk about her own incredible athletic achievements before getting into goal-setting. Alyssa reached out in April and asked if I'd be up for a long “swimrun” effort. I asked her to send over the particulars of the race, she did, and I immediately replied that I'd need some time to think about it. Respect the distance. And good golly am I glad I did. Sweden: where water meets topography. 43 miles of swimming + 136 miles of running. Over 100 transitions as teams of three swimrun through an archipelago. I went to race an Extreme Triathlon in Sweden a few years back. The topography was soul branding. An incredibly healthy water table certainly lends itself to swimrun, and it's far north so the daylight is long. Conveniently, there are chains of islands connecting some fantastic open water swimming. And that, coupled with some very deep roots in swimrun culture, is where One Water Race sprouted. Back to Alyssa, the guest on this episode. She doesn't fuss around. Alyssa is the current record holder for the Female Supported Fastest Known Time (FKT) on Vermont's 273-mile Long Trail, completing the trail in 5 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes in the summer of 2018. In 2020, she set the current Female Supported FKT for the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks, becoming the second fastest human to climb the 46 peaks, in a time of 3 days, 16 hours and 16 minutes. In 2022, Alyssa set the Overall Supported FKT for New Hampshire's 48 High Peaks, in a time of 3 days, 8 hours and 56 minutes. Traithlon, trail running, bike packing, long walks. It's all good stuff, but what about swimrun? Don't know unless you go. And if you are going you might as well try hard. Is there a recipe for mental toughness? Is resilience something we can work on and will it lead to increased success? This week, we welcome Alyssa Godesky to help us get some insight into how she became mentally tough and some tools every individual can use to help us achieve more. Alyssa is a record-setting endurance athlete, coach, and the host of the IronWomen podcast. Throughout her career, she has been a professional triathlete, set multiple FKT's (fastest known time) including the Vermont Long Trail, and competed in various adventure races, including the Barkley Marathons.Alyssa shares how she prepared for and set records on not one, but three multi-day trail runs and what it took for her to push herself to the limits. The duo discusses what it actually means to be mentally tough, and how the key to success lies in your brain - not your body.Follow Alyssa on Instagram @alyssagodesky Vist her website at https://www.alyssagodesky.com/And listen to Ironwomen hereDownload the Feisty Female Athlete Guide:https://www.womensperformance.com/ Learn More about the Feisty Kona Tri-Cation:https://www.feistytriathlon.com/trication Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ Support our Partners:InsideTracker: Get 20% off at insidetracker.com/feisty Previnex: Get 15% off your first order with code PERFORMANCE at https://www.previnex.com VJ Shoes: Use code FEISTYVJ for $20 off a pair of shoes at https://vjshoesusa.com/pages/feisty
This week on the show, Ironwomen has a VERY special guest. Our very own Alyssa Godesky has just recently attempted the Barkley Marathons, and will be sharing all of the trials and tribulations of this gnarly route. Barkley is designated as an “Ultramarathon Trail Race” that spans 100 miles and has a time limit of 60 hours. With around 16,500m of vertical climb, it is understandable why not a single runner was able to finish the entire course this year. Alyssa gives us the run-down of the marathon from start to finish. Beginning with the check-in process, she talks about everything from the “human sacrifice” to why her legs are incredibly itchy. If you had to name one woman that truly showed the outer limits of female athleticism, who would you pick? For us, it's Julie Moss. Best known for her "crawl" in the 1982 Ironman Triathlon, Julie struggled to the finish line only to be beaten by Kathleen McCartney. Her loss on this day made serious headlines. A woman wanting to win THAT badly? Her mental toughness and ability to endure were admired by many. While others felt as though Julie's under-preparedness and desperation might turn Ironman into a "freakshow". This week, Ironwoman's Alyssa Godesky interviews Julie and asks her about how this inaugural race changed her life. While Julie didn't allow sexism to enter her sphere during this time, she does recall the gender inequality in terms of role models and representation. Julie reflects on the way triathlon has changed for women over the years, and where she hopes to see it go in the future. This week we talk to pro triathlete turned Fastest Known Time record holder Alyssa Godesky. Alyssa is known for her Ironman finishes and back-to-back Ironman top tens on consecutive weekends, but a few years ago she was looking for a new challenge. That's when she found Fastest Known Times—FKTs. First, she took the fastest known time on the Vermont Long Trail and then this year she went after the Adirondack High Peaks. FKTs exploded in popularity this year and Alyssa explains to us all the logistics and the fun, and why triathletes should tackle one. Here's everything you need to know about triathletes and FKTs—and why you should try one. And first, we want to make sure you aren't missing out on our training and gear podcast, Fitter & Faster, which has moved to its own feed. We share a short excerpt from last week's episode on training zones, but be sure to subscribe to get all our training and gear info at: Apple Podcasts Spotify Soundcloud

This week, professional Triathlete, Alyssa Godesky explains how the number is not the motivator. Instead, she finds that the mindful and realistic work it takes to achieve her goals is the driving force behind her achievements. She talks us mere mortals through the concept of loving the journey, and finding fulfilment in dealing with the inevitability of pain and loss. Through a constant eye on the overarching goal of being the best human she can be, Alyssa stands by her decisions, enduring suffering with the knowledge it passes. She is a pragmatist, a visionary, and a blessing to have on Uncorked.
This is cool! The two ladies started on the same route at approximately the same time, but from different places - who would complete the route first? "I’m very surprised we seem to be the first to have done a “race” style FKT, it certainly added a fun element to the attempt." - SARAH "It was good to know Sarah was out there - a little different because it added pressure, but helpful." - ALYSSA The 'Beast Coast' sometimes doesn't get enough attention, and the two women describe what makes it special ... and hard. This episode is sponsored by PATH Projects – www.pathprojects.com
Alyssa Godesky just set the supported FKT for the ADK 46er trail in 3 days, 16 hours and 16 minutes. She and Sarah were the first two women to undertake this route, beginning at 4AM on Monday August 17th. We previewed the “racing” ladies the week before the attempt, so check those two shows out! (Alyssa) (Sarah) Though they battled thunderstorms during the attempt, they got relatively lucky with the timing and the weather was bearable. A conservative approach in the beginning paid off and Alyssa was able to keep her energy up with little sleep and long days. In this follow up episode Ellie and Alyssa nit-pick the attempt beginning with gear and logistics, moving to the route and experience on trail and then examine how Alyssa's body is feeling today. What went to plan? What didn't pan out the way Alyssa expected? Is there a faster route in her someday? What is she doing now in her off-period? All these things and more on today's episode! (Aug 24, 2020) Alyssa Godesky set a new women’s record in the Adirondacks, summiting all 46 high peaks in 3 days, 16 hours and 16 minutes. Also: High schools football, ice hockey, and wrestling are canceled due to the coronavirus, but soccer, softball, baseball, cross-county and other "low-risk" sports can go on.
Alyssa Godesky has some range in the long events. Her first ultra was the JFK 50 miler, a race she needed to run in order to get onto the US Naval Academy marathon team, which she did. She returned to JFK a few years later and got 3rd, securing her a spot in the Western States Endurance Race, her first 100 miler. She then turned to triathlon under the guidance of the legendary Hilary Biscay and quickly got her pro card. Racing all over the world and training for triathlon did not dampen her trail running spirits, as she allowed herself one or two ultras a year. She has gone past 100 milers a handful of times, including setting the FKT in 2018 for the Vermont Long Trail in 5d2h37m, which was covered by ESPN. She coaches athletes, hosts the IronWoman podcast and continues to race professional triathlon. In this episode, Ellie and Alyssa cover a while range of topics including the perfect push-up, running JFK, traveling all over the world for triathlon and going pro, working with Hilary Biscay, the hardest part of FKTs and much more. On Monday, August 17th Alyssa will be racing Sarah Keyes for the Adirondack 46er FKT currently held by Ryan Atkins in 3d5h. She explains how she's trained for it, what her strategy is and whether there will be a sprint to the finish. She is raising money for The Paden Institute and Retreat for Writers of Color which fosters the development for emerging BIPOC writers by providing them the opportunity to create works of prose on the shores of Lake Champlain in New York. You can find out more on her website here. Website: http://alyssagodesky.com/ Instagram: @alyssagodesky
Sarah Keyes is no stranger to the TC Interview series. Having made her first appearance in the early days of the show, we decided to have her back again. Not only has Sarah been nabbing local CRs and climbing mountains, on Monday August 17th, she will begin her longest and hardest FKT yet, the 150ish mile Adirondack 46er. The record is currently held by Ryan Atkins of OCR fame in 3 days, 5 hours and 52 minutes, set last July. Not only will she be attempting this feat, which she has had her eye on for a long time, she will also be RACING another elite female, Alyssa Godesky to the finish. (Stay tuned for the next episode for our interview with Alyssa!) In this episode Ellie and Sarah dive deep into Sarah's plans for this run. She has scouted the whole course, and is a bit nervous about bush-whacking through some parts. She explains how the idea to "race" Alyssa came about and whether she will sprint to the finish to beat her. Sarah talks about race nutrition and preparing both her body and mind to run for that long. Something we all wonder, do these FKTs feel like racing? How does one stay in the game mentally, when it's not hours, but days? Does the racing mindset hold on the whole time? Towards the later half of the episode, Sarah and Ellie discuss what her sponsorship looks like right now and whether Sarah feels a pull to remain relevant and do something worth noting. They talk about having multiple jobs to support the mountaineer lifestyle and whether it's worth it to make it work. Sarah is sponsored by La Sportiva, Tailwind and Julbo. This is our 15th episode of the show and our guest this week is Haley Chura, a professional athlete based in Bozeman in the USA. She is cohost of the popular Ironwomen Podcast with Alyssa Godesky and was the MC of the Outspoken Summit in Tempe Arizona which we chat about in this episode.
Alyssa Godesky is most well-known these days for being a professional triathlete and the co-host of the popular Ironwomen podcast. What isn’t well known is that she was an ultra marathon runner and trail runner, long before she moved into the world of triathlons. In 2018, Alyssa returned to her trail running roots and set out on a mission to break the Fastest Known Time (or FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail in the United States, a 273mi / 440km trail which traverses the State of Vermont from north to south. Now if you saw the film ‘Finding Traction’ on Netflix last year, you know more about the Vermont Long Trail than you might think... That film follows legendary trail runner, Nikki Kimball, on her attempt to break the (men’s) record on the Vermont Long Trail. #spoileralert Nikki misses the men’s record but smashes the women’s record. It turns out that watching ‘Finding Traction’ lit the spark in Alyssa to wonder if she could do it. Fast forward a few years and in 2018 (#spoileralert), Alyssa set a new women’s record of 5 days, 2 hours & 37min, taking over 5 hours off Nikki’s record! In this conversation we discuss: - the self-doubt and fear of failure that nearly stopped the project before she’d even started, - the strategies she used to avoid slipping into comparison with Nikki (who is, on paper, by far the more talented and experienced runner), - the sleep deprivation she experienced (after having only 17 hours of sleep in 5 days), and - the (surprising) impact the run (and the stress from it) had on her body, hormonally. News: WTS racing has begun. Sprint race in Abu Dhabi Andrea Hewitt, who lost her fiance Laurent Vidal last year, got the overall win ahead of Jodie Stimpson and Sara Vilic. Two Americans, True and Zaferes, were in the top 5 coming out of the swim. They made up a small pack that was eventually caught. Hewitt ended up sprinting in the past 15m to win. The men's race was yet again dominated by the typical races. Javier Gomez, with his killer run, won his 13th WTS race which gives him 37 podiums for the 50 total WTS career races. Great Britain's Tom Bishop and strong swimmer Vincent Luis rounded out the podium. Next race is 8-9 April in Gold Coast. For those that don't know, you can watch these races with high quality streams on triathlonlive.tv Ironman New Zealand: Guess who didn't win this year? Today’s guest without fail will inspire you. Inspire you to dream bigger. Inspire you to approach the seemingly impossible goal. Inspire you to give it your ALL. Alyssa found endurance sports as a college student after entering the JFK 50-mile on a whim. Today, as a professional triathlete with over 45 ultra marathons and 30 iron-distance triathlons under her belt, she went on to face the biggest challenge/dream of her life. The Vermont Long Trail. A brutal 273 mile trail running the length of the state that happens to be the oldest long distance trail in the US, constructed in 1910. Somewhere along the way people began formulating the crazy idea of hiking through the enter trail in one fell swoop. Alyssa not only did this, but she set the record for the FASTEST KNOWN TIME in 5 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. On today’s SMOGcast we talk about the power of building a dream team, the support crew that will be by your side for anything in life, we talk about being prepared in life and how it truly will make or break you, we talk about finding success by trying your best and much much more. Ironwomen Podcast Alyssa Godesky
Alyssa Godesky set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail in July. She completed the 273-mile trail in 5 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes. Alyssa joins James Rogers in conversation to share stories from the endeavor, including the wet conditions, wacky sleep schedule and her trail diet. The 33-year-old also has quite the triathlon resume.
Alyssa is a “Professional Triathlete who can’t seem to shake her ultrarunning habit”. She has finished 30 Ironman Triathlons, 40 ultra races, and once finished 4th in the Taiwan Ironman using all borrowed gear. On July 31, 2018, she set a new women's FKT on Vermont’s 273mi Long Trail of 5 days, 2 hours. Alyssa describes being inspired by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Nikki Kimball, both of whose Long Trail times she bettered, while noting, “Last year was my 4th as a professional triathlete. I needed to do something different - I needed to keep my fire lit”. She once did two Ironmans on successive weekends in different continents, but notes, “The Long Trail was way harder - the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The terrain is so variable - unless you’ve spent time on this trail it’s hard to describe - it changes every few hundred meters - it’s soul-crushing. Alyssa notes that women tend to want to be very prepared before they undertake something, while men are willing to jump in, even if they’re not 100%. So her advice to women? “Go do it. There’s nothing stopping you, because you get to make it your own. It’s like your own version of The Amazing Race - you get to do that yourself with FKTs”.
We are back!! It's Season 6 and Alyssa and Haley are back with all the inside details on how Alyssa set a new fastest known time (FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail. Get all the behind-the-scenes info on Alyssa's success from training to planning, her scariest moments and the daily play by play. Plus, Haley talks about Ironman Maastricht and your mailbag questions answered.
Why would a professional triathlete decide to take on a Fastest Known Time 5-day challenge of the Long Trail in Vermont? We had Alyssa Godesky on to talk about why she did it and to talk about the challenges she faced. As a professional triathlete and an ultra-marathon runner, Alyssa was no stranger to pain, but the pain of covering 273 miles and over 63,000 feet of elevation is something different. How did you get your start in athletics? Did not do a college sport, played soccer competitively through high school At Naval Academy joined Navy Marathon Team - Ran JFK 50-mile to qualify for the team Transferred schools and started trail running Moved to Baltimore after school and joined Baltimore Running Crew group Tried triathlons and stayed with them You race many triathlons and ultra races. How do you train for both of these at the same time and remain competitive? Had years of base miles with ultra racing that can build on Ironman training is harder effort training and running more endurance easy miles What is the difference between Ironman and long Ultra on your body? Early on Ironman was just finishing Now impact is comparable because goes hard in swim and bike When did you get to the point about leaving your career to pursue triathlons as a professional athlete? 2009 started thinking about it Started working with Hillary Biscay in 2011 Started getting serious about the idea in 2013 Jan 1, 2014, officially left the job to train and coach What did parents and friends think of leaving a good job to go after this dream? They were worried but supportive Let’s talk about your latest adventure and your quest for a fastest known time on the Long Trail in Vermont. You just spent 5 days conquering the trail, before we get to the how, let’s star with they why? Always looking for challenges Was on the bucket list and wanted to get it done before the end of career Always fascinated with records 2011 became aware of the FKT's Scouted pars of the trail in October and had doubts How long is the trail? 273 miles plus need to hike in and out so longer Why specifically the Long Train in Vermont? Out west more elevation but east coast are more rugged so wanted to do east coast Vermont in summer sounded good What is the terrain like on the trail? Almost all single track No switchbacks, straight up and down mountains Elevation gain about 63,000 feet total The first two days had longer climbs What is the key to a long effort like this, are you paying attention to heart rate, pace, just how you feel? How you feel Much of the training was hiking Trying to stay relaxed and upright How much sleeping did you get? First day 4 hours, about 17 hours total over 5 days Anything you did to be prepared for sleep deprivation? Not really much you can do More important to train self to sleep anywhere, anytime What was the biggest struggle you had on this FKT? The last day Weather had made trails towards end slippery and on top of lack of sleep made it hard Would you do another one of these again? Yes, this one was supported, next time maybe do a solo You also have your own podcast, IronWomen, what types of guests and topics do you have? Started to give a voice to professional female triathletes and what they are doing Third season Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Pursuit of Endurance Current trainers you are wearing? - Brooks Ghost 3 Favorite race? - Ironman Wisconsin Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Rehab 3:1 FTC Your favorite workout - Hill Repeats Resources Website http://alyssagodesky.com/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/alyssagodesky/ Twitter https://twitter.com/alyssagodesky FKT Site - FastestKnownTime.com Podcast IronwomenPodcast.com
