Stew and Smith from It Doesn't Hold Up podcast join Flixwatcher to review Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice (1988) is a fantasy horror comedy directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, a sleazy ‘bio-exorcist', Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara, the unfortunate couple who die and return to their house to be haunted by the new inhabitants which include Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, a teenage goth. Beetlejuice set the tone for Tim Burton's films of the 1980s and 1990s and 2024 saw the long awaited sequel which would star a number of the original cast. Beetlejuice balances creepy horror with genuine laughs, mainly down to Keaton's sex pest antagonist and Ryder's charming Lydia (Ryder was only 15 when she filmed this!). Recommendability for Beetlejuice was pretty high, taking into account the nostalgia and also the lack of real plot. Decent scores for the remaining Flixwatcher categories give a very respectable overall score of 4.52. Don't say it a third time! Jeff and Stuart finally reach Winona's modern era opus film, a sequel to a 1988 Tim Burton cult classic that includes the return of Keaton, O'Hara, and adding to the gang Jenna Ortega as Lydia Deetz's daughter. While Jeff, Stuart and special guest Trina Mulligan all have different opinions on the success/achievement of Beetlejuice 2, none of them deny the benchmark this film is for Winona's post-Stranger Things comeback to fame.
In this second bonus episode of Old Spook Lane Creepy Chats, Arun and Patricia continue their lookback at the 1989 animated series Beetlejuice based on the 1988 movie directed by Tim Burton with the 4th season that aired exclusively on Fox Fids. Lydia Deetz is a 12-year-old goth girl who lives in a small town called Peaceful Pines with her parents, goes to an all girls' school with her friends Prudence and Bertha, and befriends a ghost who lives in the house named Beetlejuice. Together, they go through many crazy adventures in both the real world and the world of the dead called The Neitherworld with Beetlejuice causing trouble towards everyone in his path, including his neighbors Jacques LaLean, a skeleton who loves working out, Ginger, a tap dancing spider, and The Monster Across the Street, a giant hairy monster with a dog named Poopsie. New to the series are a clown named Scuzzo, a television executive named Mr. Monitor, a cowboy named Jesse Germs, and Beetlejuice's brother Donny. Shortly after the ABC run had ended, the show was moved to Fox Kids where it had 65 episodes with a lot more wacky and zany adventures. It had even won an Emmy tying with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh as Best Animated Show. How well does it hold up? It's What's Inside" (2024). Developed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice is the animated television series loosely based on the 1988 film of the same name (also directed by Tim Burton). Luke and Jason journey back to the animated realm to revisit the 4 seasons of this ABC and Fox series which ran from 1989 to 1991. Lydia Deetz and her friend Beetlejuice share adventures between both the "mortal world" and the Neitherworld, a supernatural realm inhabited by various monsters.
Don't say the name of this episode out loud! Kat and James get their goth on and tackle these two Tim Burton comedies separated by 36 years yet so eerily similar. Like the ghost, this episode has the most as they discuss the cultural impact of Lydia Deetz and goth subculture, the movie's skewed view of the afterlife, and the extremes of non-belief regarding spirits versus an unhealthy interest in them. “I wonder where a guy, an everyday Joe like myself, can find a little action..." We have a super sized episode of the podcast, and watched "Beetlejuice" (1988) and the newly released sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" (2024). This might be one of our favorite Tim Burton films, let alone comedies, like ever. We first talk about the original 1988 movie, which we know like the back of our gay hands - and can quote from beginning to end. The story of a newly dead Conneticut couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) who seek the help of a dead beat demon (Michael Keaton) to scare a yuppie New York couple, was a fresh take on a "haunted house" movie, and were here to say it's characters and lines are engrained in our everyday lives. We talk about the found family storyline of the Maitlands finding their surrogate daughter in Lydia Deetz (iconic goth girly Winona Ryder), 1988's Alec Bladwin's face card that could never get declined (not to mention that thick ass), and Michael Keaton absolutely crushing every line delverly as the "Ghost with the Most." We dive into our thoughts on the sequel and let's put it this way - for a movie that doesn't need to exist, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is a lot of fun. This episode may be a long one, but with two movies, 36 years and a ton of iconic performances, whats an extra hour? This week, Rolando, Nicole, and Eddie take a deep dive into the lasting legacy of Tim Burton's distinctive filmography, focusing on Beetlejuice. We explore why Burton's gothic, eccentric style has resonated so strongly with audiences—particularly millennials. What is it about his unique blend of whimsy and darkness that keeps his work so beloved, even decades later? Next, we focus on Beetlejuice itself and uncover an interesting revelation: despite Michael Keaton's unforgettable portrayal, the title character doesn't appear until more than halfway through the film. Instead, the true narrative centers around the Maitlands, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, and their attempt to navigate the afterlife. We also take a moment to appreciate the stellar performances of Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O'Hara as Delia, who bring a remarkable energy to the film. Finally, we discuss the long-awaited sequel, which began production in 2023 after years in green lit limbo. Was this return to the world of Beetlejuice worth the wait? We also examine the absence of Jeffrey Jones and whether Tim Burton still has the box office power he once commanded. This film is a sequel to the 1988 original film and sees Tim Burton returning as director along with Michael Keaton as the titular character and Winona Ryder & Catherine O'Hera returning to their respective roles. Joining the cast is Justin Theroux, Jenna Ortega, Monica Belluci & William Defoe. In this film, after a family tragedy, Lydia Deetz, her art eccentric stepmother and her estranged daughter return to their hometown of Winter River, but when an old “friend” finds out of her return, the chaos of the after life begins and shows no sign of stopping. Burton & Warner Bros. were anxious to do another film but after the success Burton's 2 “Batman” films and several different scripts having to be rewritten, the idea of sequel seemed more like a dream. After years of development hell, Warner Bros. shelved any idea of a sequel unless they and Burton could find a worthy script which didn't come along until 2022 when Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, penned a script and thus pre production began.
36 years in the making! Where does the time go, am I right? Someone must've said gone and said it because he's back in theaters 36 years after we last saw him in 1988 in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Michael Keaton reprises yet another one of the characters that made him the star that he is along with Winona Ryder, as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara, as Delia Deetz, from the original. Also, Tim Burton returns to direct this sequel to the movie that pretty much got him the “Batman” job. Burton does again feature the afterlife oddities and general weirdness but amplifies it for today's audience. It all starts with Lydia seeing Beetlejuice visions and needing to reunite with her daughter, Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. Events soon lead them to the house from the first movie and all that lie within, including the title character, who hasn't forgotten Lydia. However, there's a ghostly figure, named Delores played by Monica Bellucci, who hasn't forgotten about Beetlejuice. She's on the hunt for her man and woe to any that get in her way. Tim Burton also brings in some new characters like Rory, played by Justin Theroux and Wolf Jackson played by Willem Dafoe. Will it haunt you forever if you don't go see this at the theater? Check out this episode to find out that very thing. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” also stars Arthur Conti, Nick Kellington, Santiago Cabrera, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Sami Slimane and Amy Nuttall. It's been a hot minute since I've podcasted, and I have truly missed it like crazy. It has been one heck of a year, and I have truly been SUPER BUSY. However, when it comes to releasing episodes, I really want to continue to share my passions with the world, so I have decided to start a new series through this podcast called "Episodes from the Vault." Every episode is going to feature an interview I have done over the past year, and despite the extremely overdue release, I still want to share it with whoever will listen. Without further ado, this is Episodes From the Vault. Larkin Reilly made her broadway debut in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Bad Cinderella. Despite the short run on Broadway, she got to perform in an original company of a musical. Since this interview, Reilly has been on the road touring with Beetlejuice: The Musical in the ensemble and covering Lydia Deetz. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jayme-starr/support
Lucky Loo Loo Green chose this week's pick and it's Tim Burton classic from 1988, Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice was characterized by its unique blend of dark humor, fantasy, and inventive visual style. Tim Burton, known for his distinctive aesthetic and offbeat storytelling, brought his imaginative vision to the project, infusing it with his trademark whimsy and macabre sensibility. Collaborating with screenwriters Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren, Burton crafted a screenplay that balanced humor with horror and fantasy elements, creating a bizarre and captivating world. The film's production also benefited from the creative talents of its cast, including Michael Keaton as the eccentric Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the hapless Maitland couple, and Winona Ryder as the gothic teenager Lydia Deetz. The elaborate sets, innovative practical effects, and colorful costume design contributed to the film's distinct visual aesthetic, transporting audiences to a fantastical world filled with eccentric characters and supernatural occurrences. Despite initial skepticism from studio executives, Beetlejuice went on to become a critical and commercial success, solidifying its status as a beloved cult classic and a defining entry in Tim Burton's filmography. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Recently deceased couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland, find themselves trapped in their home as ghosts. When a new family, the Deetzes, moves in and plans to renovate the house, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away. However, their efforts prove futile, leading them to reluctantly seek the help of the eccentric and mischievous "bio-exorcist" Beetlejuice. As Beetlejuice wreaks havoc on the Deetzes and their guests, the Maitlands realize they've made a deal with a dangerous and unpredictable force. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". To conclude this year's edition of "AllysAccessoriesShop on Etsy's Trash Feature Revue", CatBusRuss does his best to pit two actresses against each other. The girl of his offbeat film preadolescence, Winona Ryder, and the woman of his low-brow cinema adulthood, Milla Jovovich. How did "The Fifth Element's" Leeloo defeat "Beetlejuice's" Lydia Deetz? How convoluted is this episode going to be? To add some cohesion to the closure of the Trash Feature Revue, our host decided to find a connection between Milla's and Winona's filmographies. The answer, Ben Stiller's "Zoolander". Jovovich is fifth billed and Ryder only has a cameo, but is more prevalent in the trailer. We can call that a tie, so whose film representing Y and # was better: The rom-com where Milla tries carrying David Krumholtz to stardom, "You Stupid Man"; Or the hippie movie led by a Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Downey Jr. ensemble, "1969"? This could be messy because the Milla flick was introduced to Russ from the ex who was prior to Ally. Does this podcast compare his most recent relationships? Give it a listen and be as judgmental as you like.

Bella Esler is a new comer in the world of professional theatre. She graduated high school in 2022, and now she is starring in the national tour of Beetlejuice: The Musical as Lydia Deetz. Growing up, Esler always loved going to the theatre and catching her favorite national tours such as Wicked and The Book of Mormon . Little did she know that shortly after she flipped her high school tassel from left to right that it was going to be her turn to take a show on the road and originate a role for a brand new tour. He's the ghost with the most... and also a huge pervert. Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" is very Tim Burton. It's an impressive production given the modest budget - you've got all the in-demand Burton essentials - a killer Danny Elfman score, whimsical set design, funky makeup and super goths (actually just young Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, but she's representing the goth crew well). For those who haven't seen "Beetlejuice" in a while, it might surprise you to hear just how little the title character played by Michael Keaton actually appears in the movie. This is very much an Alec Baldwin-Geena Davis joint, playing new ghosts who must learn how to haunt away the still living who move into their old house. Keaton's "Betelgeuse" (that's how it's spelled in the movie... probably a good idea they changed it for the movie title/marketing campaign) is a "bio exorcist," but he's also disgusting and nobody likes him. Whoever beckons him immediately regrets it. Then there's the climax where he tries to marry underage Winona Ryder. Dude's a creep, making it all the more bizarre they made a children's Saturday morning cartoon based on the character. Old Millennials Remember Movies hosts Tyler and Angela discuss their history with the movie and why Tyler didn't ever feel like watching the movie despite owning the DVD for 15+ years (it's those damn DVD case stickers man!). They also spend some time dissecting the (intentionally?) hilarious deaths of Baldwin and Davis' characters, and why the Maitland's might be the dumbest people in the underworld. And, of course, the Old Millennials take the easy opportunity to fawn over Catherine O'Hara again. She's a treasure. So brush up on the lyrics for "Day O!" and get ready for that 2-day only sale at The Bon Marche, as Old Millennials Remember Movies discusses "Beetlejuice." But if you say his name three times, you're going to regret all his icky sex talk. Stay with me here. There's this mirror, right? It's got a demon in it. The witches of Salem used to use it, but literally all it does is seduce people and ruin their lives. It doesn't explicitly grant wishes, but clearly there's a wishing element. You can't ask it for stuff or bad things happen. You certainly shouldn't have sex with the demon that lives in it. That's a big no-no. Our story begins when a copyright infringing version of Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice moves into a house that's haunted by a demonic mirror. Her mom has two shitty dogs, and some severe psychological issues resulting from her husband's unexpected death. She and the Tim Burton lawsuit child are drifting apart. Copyright infringing Lydia enrolls in what looks to be a BILLION DOLLAR SCHOOL. In between classes in water polo, tennis and money fights she gets bullied, sexes up a mirror demon and then goes full on Carrie on the school. (Mostly on the only people who actually care about her.) It all ends with a very blue house full of blowing paper. So get ready for dead dogs, Karen Black, some by-the-numbers kills, and join Matt and Tristan for one of the better low budget Carrie rip-offs, Mirror Mirror.

Based on the 1988 Warner Bros. motion picture, "Beetlejuice the Musical" tells the story of Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager obsessed with the whole "being dead thing." Lucky for Lydia, her new house is haunted by a recently deceased couple and a degenerate demon who happens to have a thing for stripes. When Lydia calls on this ghost-with-the-most to scare away her insufferable parents, Beetlejuice (Alex Brightman, "School of Rock") comes up with the perfect plan, which involves exorcism, arranged marriages and an adorable girl scout who gets scared out of her wits.
Theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom with her weekly review of a theatrical production in the region. What's on her agenda today? Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! National Theatre in Washington, DC, has staged the pre-Broadway world premiere of Beetlejuice, a new musical adaptation of filmmaker Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic. The new musical -- with music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect and Book by Scott Brown and Anthony King -- takes a new tack on the movie plot: it tells the story of Lydia Deetz (played by Sophia Ann Caruso), an unusual teenager obsessed with the whole “'being dead' thing.” Luckily for Lydia, her family's new home is haunted by a recently deceased couple (played by Kerry Butler and Rob McClure) and a degenerate demon-for-hire named Beetlejuice (played by Tony Award nominee Alex Brightman). When Lydia calls on the twisted ghost to scare away her insufferable parents (played by Adam Dannheiser and Leslie Kritzer), Beetlejuice comes up with the perfect plan, involving an exorcism, arranged marriages and one very frightened Girl Scout.Beetlejuice, directed by Alex Timbers, continues at National Theatre in Washington, DC, through Sunday November 18. This week we turn the magnifying glass on our younger selves to analyze those things we were just too young to appreciate. A good glass of brandy. A fine pair of sneakers. Hell, even the crushing, yet liberating, weight of being absolutely alone. But not in that Lydia Deetz sort of Beetlejuicey/goth way.
