Jon White has studied Indo-European mythology for more than thirty years, particularly focusing on cosmogony and creation myths. As an independent researcher and lecturer, he shares this knowledge on his YouTube-channel @Crecganford . Mr. White visits Cave of Apelles to detail the major motifs or "mythologems" of the Indo-European mythological tradition and what they denote. Considering that the Indo-Europeans lived in the Pontic-Caspian steppes about 7000 years ago, how did their stories spread to ancient India, Persia, Rome or Norse Scandinavia - changing, yet still retaining their core? Combining the study of myths with fields like linguistics, archeology and etymology Mr. White will unravel cross-cultural similarities in stories like The Cosmic Twins, Defeating the dragon, The cattle raiding myth and The wild hunt. He will also share his ideas on how we best are to understand myths. Are they projections of the human psyche, the condensed ethos of a culture or symbolic manifestations of natural and cultural history? More intriguing still: is the presence of myths and archetypal images particular to Homo sapiens or have they been transferred between human species?
Seth Fite is a classical painter born in England, who grew up in the United States. From the new world, he is inspired by American Golden Age illustrators, Andrew and N. C. Wyeth, and the Cincinnati master Frank Duveneck. From the old world, he has studied masters such as Rembrandt and Velasquez. In 2019 he was a student of Odd Nerdrum. Fite has been told to "find his own voice" and "do something new", as well as other clichés, but he sees little use of this. He strives to strike the vulnerable spot of humankind, the same spot found by masters before him.

Kaja Forum is a Norwegian painter with an acute sensibility to value and tender moments. Living off of commissions, Norum will explain how she balances her own wishes and those of the commissioner. She will also discuss how she approaches her own work, laying out her method of solving compositions and how she double-checks herself by comparing her own work with the old masters. In addition, Norum will talk about her favorite contemporary colleague Molly Judd, and how she has been inspired by the works of August Rodin, Eugène Carrière and Odd Nerdrum. Are we progressing towards a brighter future, or have we lost something important on the way? Should we look at science and poetry through the same lens, or is that one of the reasons why we have ended up with modernism? Philosopher Stephen Hicks sits down with Classical painters, Odd Nerdrum & Jan-Ove Tuv, to discuss the modern belief in progress and whether it is shaping the art world for good or for bad.
Jan-Ove Tuv sits down with two young painters who are currently studying with Odd Nerdrum to listen to their thoughts about their teacher, how he approaches painting and the greatest takeaways from being his pupil. Unfortunately, there was a technical issue with Hösel's microphone which got worse towards the ending.
What are the signifiers of an eternal image? Odd Nerdrum argues for the melancholic perspective on life and points to painters like Jacques-Louis David, Rembrandt and Titian.
Jannik Hösel is a German classical painter currently studying with Odd Nerdrum. Growing up in an environment that offered no possibilities to be formally trained in the craft, he chose to go down the autodidactic road, and sits down in the Cave to share his knowledge on self-learning, which ranges from suggested exercises and how to think as you study — to basic awareness of painting materials. Hösel is also concerned with the psychological faithfulness of motifs. He warns against becoming too "symbolic" or "deep", and how you can attain the middle road of storytelling.
The young draughtsman and painter from Finland has proven his talent with narrative portraits from live model. Aiming for the Classical Greek ideal, Hjalmar Hagelstam is already well-equipped, having studied painting with Odd Nerdrum and sculpture at the Florence Academy Growing up in a country known for Sibelius and Gallen-Kallela, Hagelstam asks the following question: "Which lessons can we learn from the strange fate of 19th century Finnish painters?" As he sees it, they were rightfully concerned with Kalevala, the native, mythical epic. However their political desire to find something "national" in it, invariably led to failure. Making matters worse, influence from contemporary ideas of "progress" and styles like symbolism and impressionism only further removed their work from a truly timeless context. So what makes a universal story? And could you grip the essence of a myth by simply illustrating it?
https://www.alexvenezia.com Alex Venezia b.1993 Virginia Beach, Virginia; currently lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. Primarily a self taught painter, Alex Venezia, first became aware of the transcendent power of art during a high-school art lesson on chiaroscuro while examining the works of Caravaggio. This class marked a unique turning point for the young student as he began to consider a vocation in the arts. Searching for new art experiences he frequented the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia where he was able to fill his eyes with the works of the Masters and make copies. Venezia has sought out and studied classical technique with many of todays top representational painters including: Odd Nerdrum, Colleen Barry, Daniel Sprick, Michael Klein, and Jeff Hein. "In his words, Inspiration comes in many forms, and usually far from the easel, but there's nothing like seeing the work of an artist that you hold in high regard in person. It has a way of putting me in my place and motivating me to become a better painter." And so it has. Most recently Venezia took home the 2017 first place prize in the Still Life Competition at the prestigious Grand Central Atelier in New York. Alex Venezia has been a featured artist in Southwest Art Magazine, 21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch in 2016 and BuzzFeed article 5 Artistic Prodigies 21 And Under.

David Molesky is a former student of Odd Nerdrum, based in North Carolina. He is concerned with the rough manner of late Rembrandt and Titian — a painting method first employed by the Ancient Greek painter Apelles. Molesky contrasts this technique with so-called photo-realism, which he asserts leaves no room for the viewer. But art historians typically interpret the rough technique as "modern", so whose interpretation is accurate? And can you be influenced by this manner of painting without compromising clarity of form and thus wind up as a modernist? Andrew Scheglov is a Toronto based figurative painter. Born in Russia and raised in Israel, he currently lives and works in Canada. His education includes a diploma in Classical Animation from Sheridan College in 2005, a year long apprenticeship with Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum in 2007, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2012. Andrew's recent work oscillates between motifs of intimate queer portraiture in quotidian domestic or outdoor settings, and larger socio-psychological images of crowds in motion, particularly from the late Soviet era, resulting from the collapse of major spiritual systems and threat relevance to our own, contemporary Western psychic uprootedness and instability. In both bodies of work, Andrew is driven by a desire to address the psychology of the sitter in an empathetic way. On a formal level, he is fascinated with the effects of light, colour and movement. On this week's episode Andrew talks about his journey from Classical animation to fine arts, his two series - queer portraits and crowd paintings, along with his apprenticeship in Norway and his creative process. My new series have taken me away from academic studies to more elaborate compositions which combine human and still life elements. In addition to this I now take on portrait commissions, and continue my studies in art by observing and copying the painting of the Old Masters in art galleries throughout the world. My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty; often it is found in the unconventional. Because of this I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter. Frequently my compositions are spontaneous. When a person comes to me, they occupy a space my mind. Arrangements form from there until with excitement I see and have the idea. The design is both planned and subconscious. For this reason I surround myself with Victorian and Baroque costume, bones, and other things which I find fascinating- I want subject matter to always be at hand. My paintings are created with oil paint on canvas. I am conscious of the traditional craftsmanship I have attained in Florence. While my interest in new pigments and tools may cause minor alterations in my materials, these really remain fundamentally the same. All my evolution is taking place on the canvas and in my head; in what I see in nature and interpret in two dimensions on the picture plan. I have the fundamentals of design to work with when planning a painting. I make preparatory studies. I use multiple layers to build an illusion of light and form. When this illusion is convincing and to my taste, the painting is done." -Teresa
Jan-Ove Tuv sat down for a special interview with Odd Nerdrum to talk about the Egocentric, Geocentric and Heliocentric level — three stages of painting developed by Nerdrum and initially inspired by thoughts proposed by Tuv. ▶ Full video: https://www.patreon.com/caveofapelles
Artist Nicholas O'Leary won the Quick Draw his first time at Plein Air Easton in 2019 earning him an automatic entry into the following festival, but when COVID altered the landscape of international travel he found himself unable to cash in his award. With a safer situation in 2022, Nicholas is finally returning to our competition. Jess and Tim talk with Nicholas about his inspiration and his take on the Plein Air scene in Norway. Nicholas O'Leary (born in 1986 in Gisborne, New Zealand) has a degree in Architecture from the University of Auckland (2009). Since graduating he has lived and worked in Bergen, Norway, wher he can be found hiking in the mountains with his easel strapped to his backpack in often challenging conditions. He has painted since childhood and has studied under many artists, most notably with Odd Nerdrum in Norway. O'Leary works largely from life whereby the observation of previously unnoticed subtleties are prioritised. The recognition of which allow O'Leary to bend physical rules in his paintings and challenge our perceptions of truth and deception, reality and fantasy. The accululation and manipulation of observations is not limited by a specific subject matter. He paints across the board, and has won international prizes in portraiture, figurative paintings, larger imaginative compositions, landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes. The Argentinian painter Melisa Calabria sits down to explain the importance of painting self-portraits. Beyond supplying a free and patient model, Calabria perceives self-portraits as an "excuse" that allows you to depict archetypal situations. The trio behind "The Hunt of Odd Nerdrum" sit down to talk about Nerdrum's sources of inspiration that they did NOT cover in the documentary.
In this video we discuss and react to a video made by Kitsch Painter, Nic Thurman, an artist, content creator, and student of famed artist, Odd Nerdrum. Nic's video argues that the true roots of modernist philosophy in art stem from the writings of Kant & Hegel, something Thurman sees as harmful to the art world. He believes that the best way to think about art is with Aristotelian philosophy. He is concerned with sentimental and timeless motifs that tell stories about the human condition. He has exhibited across the United States and Norway. From 2014 - 2017 he studied as a pupil of Jeremy Caniglia. In 2018 Thurman became a pupil of Odd Nerdrum and studied in his studios, in Norway and Sweden, for over 2 years. Original broadcast date October 3, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/10/binary-system-podcast-193-more-horror-movies/ October's here so it's time once again for Binary System to go over our list of Favorite Horror Movies and scare ourselves silly. Two years ago we had a conversation with Hannah about our go-to movies, and last year we talked about The Cell and As Above So Below, so this year we're talking about The Thing from Another World (the 1951 version), Crimson Peak, The Wicker Man (the 1973 version), Angel Heart, 28 Days Later, Paranormal Activity, and Pitch Black. And then we went off on a ton of tangents as we listed movies that aren't great but have parts you should fast forward to (Prophesy for Christopher Walken, and Amityville Horror for Ryan Reynolds' abs), debated on whether or not having vampires in it makes it horror, wondered whether or not Christopher Eccleston has really and truly made his peace with Doctor Who, and briefly touch on Carnival Row (pretty!) and Jessica Jones season three (...darnit...) This week's outro music is Synthwave E by TeknoAxe. https://youtu.be/RBxnYXGNNAk The article where Cara Delevingne explains why she uses an Irish accent in Carnival Row is here. (Short version: it made sense to her, especially since so much about fairies comes from Irish folklore. Also because she just likes the accent.) https://www.irishnews.com/magazine/entertainment/2019/08/29/news/why-does-cara-delevingne-s-fairy-in-carnival-row-have-an-irish-accent--1697831/ The artist who inspired several of the images in The Cell is Odd Nerdrum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_(painting) If you want even more horror movie goodness on Pixelated Geek, you should check out The Spookeasy Podcast. https://pixelatedgeek.com/category/podcasts/spookeasy-podcast/ You can read about the Frances, the 1926 building Elizabeth lived in when she was in Asheville, in this article. (There's no mention of it being a former nunnery, so that might be a myth.) https://lavilo.com/travel-book/asheville-montford-frances-apartments Correction: Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury is the animated one and YES it's animated by Peter Chung, who also did Æon Flux. Correction #2: that moment long after you watch something when you realize a plot point didn't make sense is called Fridge Logic, not a Fridge Moment. (It's sometimes called a Jellybean Moment, after a Harlan Ellison story, so that's where we mixed up the name.) https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/main/fridgelogic Not really a correction but HOLY COW, somebody archived the entire IMDB forums. Here's the one for "Angel Heart"; enter at your own risk.
Original broadcast date October 18, 2018. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/10/binary-system-podcast-148-as-above-so-below-the-cell-and-other-horror-movies-we-like/ It took us a long time before we'd watch horror movies, a LONG time. By the time we graduated high school we'd seen most of Poltergeist (a friend warned us about the face-falling-off scene) and one Freddy Krueger movie (The Dream Warriors, still our favorite, oh shut up.) So even we think it's weird that we have a collection of horror movies we actually like, though a lot of them aren't considered "successful" or "good" or even "scary." Listen in as we break down what we loved about 2014's As Above, So Below, and 2000's The Cell, and the rest of Kathryn's imdb list of horror movies. (With frequent tangents into Twin Peaks, Fantastic Planet, and our shameless addiction to imdb trivia and jump scares.) This week's outro music is a clip from Scratch Massive's Nuit de mes reves, featured on the As Above So Below soundtrack. https://youtu.be/6Hufzuj5weo We talked about the artist who inspired some of the disturbing images in The Cell but we never mentioned his name, it's Odd Nerdrum. (And he's Swedish, not Flemish.) http://nerdrum.com/paintings/ And the sculpture that inspired the horse-sliced-apart scene in The Cell (and also Hannibal's display of one of his victims) is Damien Hirst's "Some Comfort Gained from the Acceptance of the Inherent Lies in Everything." http://www.damienhirst.com/some-comfort-gained-from-the-a

Our guest for the evening is the Norwegian painter Kristine Onsrud. Many young, figurative painters can probably relate to her art school trauma, but there are probably few who have experienced that their painting got stabbed with a pair of scissors by their so-called colleagues. This is exactly what happened to Onsrud, who eventually left the London art school to get a proper education at the Florence Academy in Italy. But the "all you do is wrong"-mentality and lack of storytelling as an integrated part of the education at FAA, finally made her apply to the Nerdrum School where she has studied since. The conversation was produced by Bork S. Nerdrum, with assistance from Cassander Straumsgaard, and Sebastian Salvo. The centerpiece was a self-portrait by Kristine Onsrud. On the shelf were works she made at FAA and as a pupil of Odd Nerdrum. SHOUTOUT to our TOP SPONSORS! After studying with Odd Nerdrum in the early 2000s, Knoop devoted her time to the frescoes of Pompeii and Antique sculptures. Aftur Nerdrum joins us to explain the process of staging her father's play, where Kant is confronted with the consequences of his aesthetics. Which considerations had to be taken, bringing the play to life on stage, and what are the qualities of Odd Nerdrum as a playwright? Aftur Nerdrum discusses how the intricacies of human passion makes the play transcend philosophical differences — comparing it with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein´s Monster. ▶ Watch the performance of "The Last Days of Immanuel Kant" here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/immanuelkantssistedager This conversation was hosted by Jan-Ove Tuv, and produced by Bork S. Bork Nerdrum, our own producer, appears on The Cave to reveal his ranking list of the greatest living painters, inspired by his father's philosophy and Aristotle's Poetics. See the list here: https://sivilisasjonen.no/kultur/53593/the-worlds-greatest-living-painters/ How can quality in painting be objectively measured and what happens when everything detracts into subjectivism? As Bork Nerdrum sees it, a clear set of dogmas is the only solution to hindering cultural self-destruction. The centerpiece for this conversation was "Frenzied Woman" by Odd Nerdrum. On the shelf were "The Outcast" by Sebastian Salvo, "The Golden Cape" by Odd Nerdrum, and "The Passenger" by Bruno Passos. The episode was hosted by Jan-Ove Tuv and produced by Bork S. With Modernism, objective values were thrown overboard. Einar Duenger Bøhn, who teaches philosophy at the University of Agder in Norway, sees objective value in the classical portrait, making Aristotle's concept of tëchne a true humanistic project. He has written a book called “The Meaning of Life” where he uses the myth of Sisyphus to argue that the potential for improvement is the only thing that can give life meaning, and that there are objective signifiers of good and bad. *** EXCLUSIVELY for PATRONS: in the bonus material, Jan-Ove Tuv gets personal with Bøhn and serves him questions challenging his ethics. And as always, Tuv puts him to the test: is Bøhn a fundamentally kitschy person or is he an artist? Would you like to get previews, bonus material and other benefits? Why did Edvard Munch bow to Art after successfully emulating the techniques of the old masters? Perhaps the philosophy of kitsch could serve as a solution for contemporary classical painters that are trying to cultivate their virtue in a minefield of Art. But how do you differentiate between correct and incorrect kitsch signifiers? Watch Jan-Ove Tuv's conversation with the American painter Nic Thurman, an original member of the Memorosa group. Thurman studied with Jeremy Caniglia at the Creighton Preparatory School for three years before he went to study with Odd Nerdrum. He is concerned with the late style of Titian and Rembrandt, but also the early Edvard Munch. *** EXCLUSIVELY for PATRONS: in the bonus material, Tuv visits Thurman in his studio, where he is working on a large-scale composition of two lovers. They talk about technique, methods of storytelling, and lay out books on the table to compare Edvard Munch's work to Rembrandt's. Back in the studio, Tuv asks Thurman some personal questions and tests his knowledge with the "Do you know Art and Kitsch history?" quiz. At the end, Tuv presents the ten minute excerpt of the upcoming documentary on the Memorosa Group, showing Javier Adams, Sebastian Salvo, and Nic Thurman himself compete to make the best one-hour drawing. "I feel like it's time to take women a little bit off the fashion-horse", says the tailor who wants to shape men into cathedrals with her new brand, "The Kitsch Collection". Eline Dragesund is a young designer from Norway whose primary inspiration for clothing is the subculture of Odd Nerdrum's painting school, as well as Ancient Greece. She despises modern body-shape solutions like zippers and polyester, and prefers classical solutions such as linen, draped around the body. In recent years, she has worked with men only. "With every man that I've worked with, he comes to me and says: 'I cannot find what I am looking for. Can you help me?'" As a result of the lack of varied design, she sees the need for "an alternative, elegant clothing style for men." The guidelines for Dragesund's brand are the same as those for kitsch painters: good handcraft, a toned down palette and a timeless mark. Starting out with Edvard Munch, she is planning to select one kitsch-person or a theme as a source of inspiration for each collection. But it is not Munch's wardrobe that interests her — rather how he paints it. For more information about Eline Dragesund's brand, please go to http://dragesund.com. How can one secure the independence of culture? Watch Jan-Ove Tuv's conversation with the Norwegian art sociologist Dag Solhjell who co-authored "On Kitsch" in 2002, subsequently publishing four volumes on cultural politics in Norway. On the basis of his recent book "Dette er kunst" (This is Art), Solhjell describes what he calls "pointing", which denotes how the Curatoriate validates something as a work of art. He also touches on «The Art Police», and describes how the State made ”Art” a natural part of our society, before contrasting the defining principles of Art with those of Kitsch. If the result is politicization of culture, should cultural politics be abolished altogether? The centerpieces for this conversation where "Running Bride" by Odd Nerdrum and a color litograph from "Les Vitraux du Musèe de Salvador Dali a Figueras". The episode was produced by Bork S. Nerdrum, assisted by Nic Thurman and Javier Adams.
Watch Jan-Ove Tuv's conversation with the former academic director at the Florence Academy of Sweden, Joakim Ericsson, who swapped painting for fantasy illustrations and the gaming industry. This episode was produced by Bork S. Nerdrum, assisted by Andrew Aviste and Seth Fite.

A great episode that did not want to end! Ian Reynold(in the running for favorite studio) sits with us to talk about moving large canvases, developing a style, the importance of struggle to good art, studying with Odd Nerdrum, a bitchin’ kitchen Titian, and more. We talk about 3 paintings of his in the studio which leads to talk about painting without the finish in mind and justifying a painting’s existence, what we would do with 5 years left on Earth, emotional instability in the role of art, choosing the audience to sell to, and is Josh doing a commission?? Ian gives us his Top 8 artists alive, who he hates, and probably the best David Choe Money answer yet! Find him on Instagram to book a tattoo. Praise Ceiling Fan.

Heidi Johnson has been putting the coolest art and events in front of the hippest people in LA for decades. In this episode she breaks down where PR and management cross over, how much of this stuff artists should be doing for themselves, and when it's time for you to get a manager. She also lets us in on some secrets of how to get your shit covered by the press. There's a lot of name-dropping in this episode, but every story is peppered with many years of wisdom, and by the end Heidi takes muthafuckas to school so don't miss the second half of this episode. We also share stories on the late Juxtapoz co-founder Greg Escalante since Heidi was one of the people closest to him in his final years. Vi Khi Nao’s poem inhabits the scene of a painting composed in 1998 by Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum. Produced by Katie Klocksin.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Richard T Scott is a painter, writer, and coin designer for the United States Mint living in the Hudson Valley. His paintings are in museum collections in North America and Europe. One of his coin designs commemorating Fort Moultrie will be on the new quarter released into circulation this November. Richard is represented by Paul Booth Gallery in New York City and Galerie L'Oeil du Prince in Paris. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/richardtscott In this episode, Richard discusses: -How he got involved with the United States Mint and his first quarter that is going to be minted of Fort Moultrie. -How paintings do not stand the test of time, but coins and sculptures do. -An important lesson he learned from his friend in high school about the difference between natural talent and hard work. -How JMW Turner was inspired by Claude Lorrain. -Things that have held him back during his art career, such as financial strain and crippling doubt. -The cloud that hung over his head for a long time, where he didn’t believe he could actually be successful as a professional artist, despite his drive to be the best painter he could be. -The powerful idea of collaborative competition, and the way that he uses it with Adam Miller. -A powerful story about the chance he took in reaching out to Odd Nerdrum and the journey that it took him on. -One of his best moments, happening at the moment, having a piece accepted into the Georgia Museum of Art. -What art and creativity brings to his life. -Why Rembrandt is one of his greatest influences. -Some of the things he has coming up at this very exciting time in his career. Richard's Final Push will inspire you to go for your dreams… all you need is persistence, passion, and honesty. Quotes: “2000 years from now, it might be the case that none of my paintings will be around, but these coins will.” “This idea that you’re born with genius or talent and that’s what defines whether or not you succeed at something… I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s about your passion.” “Even though I’ve always been driven to be the best painter I could be, I never believed that I could actually be successful at it.” “What I keep telling myself is to be optimistic, to be realistic, and to be honest with myself about my strengths and especially my weaknesses.” “I would rather win a silver medal knowing that I had reached my greatest potential instead of winning a gold medal when my competition hadn’t even reached theirs.” “So I had gone from thinking I had cancer, my marriage is falling apart, feeding myself out of a garden, foraging, and having ten cents to my name… and suddenly I had sold eleven paintings within two weeks.” “At any moment, anything can happen that might seem so incredibly small. And if you’re there and you’re ready and you’re prepared and you’re on your game, it could turn into something that you can’t even imagine. “For me, art is the way that I understand the world. It’s the way that I digest life.” Links mentioned: TED Talk with Theo Jansen "Fourth Wall" at Paul Booth Gallery Connect with Richard: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter
