With endless bot armies infiltrating social media feeds and harnessing the algorithm to control narratives and public opinion, our media system is becoming increasingly polluted. How long will it be before the internet is officially “dead,” where more comments and views are bots than human? Our conversation this week is with Amil Khan, a former Reuters foreign correspondent and BBC investigative journalist with over two decades of experience in media and communications. Amil is now the CEO of Valent, a firm specializing in countermeasures for organizations under threat from bot networks and disinformation campaigns. Once again we bring news of the good deeds of the Donald. Tony Blair nearly wins right-wing nut of the week for his crazy pro fossil intervention on behalf of his petro state clients, but he's pipped by the Tories' energy man who probably believes the Earth is flat and definitely won't get to do that which he says he will do. We talk Dale writing for the Telegraph on Gaza and the crazy things our Government says about trade - more important than law apparently….breaking the link rears its head again as the man they call ‘Red Ed' might need more money for his 2030 target. And if that's not enough our listeners and X rated trolls have a bundle of good, bad and generally fun things to add.
The average American's worldview is under constant assault from propaganda. Between the 5,000 advertisements we see daily, for profit journalism, and virtually every post on social media, the gulf between reality and the myths we are surrounded by has never been wider. And with the widespread adoption of algorithms guiding this entire process, we are in desperate need of a new set of skills to navigate the landscape. This set of skills is widely referred to as media literacy—a concept that extends literacy beyond the ability to read and write, into the ability to understand how and why messages work across different forms of media. Joining us is special guest Renee Hobbs, media literacy scholar, educator, and founder of the Media Education Lab. Welcome to DoubleThink, conversations inspired by This Is Propaganda. It probably won't come as much of a surprise that the Pentagon was involved in the making of Top Gun. What may be more surprising is the sheer scope of film and television projects the Pentagon has had a hand in—and just how deeply involved it is in the production process. From Pitch Perfect 3 to the reality show Wife Swap, today we'll explore how the Pentagon became one of the most powerful forces behind Hollywood storytelling—and the long-term impact this influence has had on audiences both in America and around the world. Bible News Prophecy with Dr Bob Thiel, Is Germany Becoming Orwell's 1984? Brought to you by the Continuing Church of God “Bringing you news and analysis of world events in light of Bible prophecy.” This is a mandate of the Continuing Church of God. In his novel "1984" George Orwell described a totalitarian government that controlled all aspects of human existence. “Big Brother is Watching You” was the reality of this government. George Orwell introduced “Newspeak”, a language that was designed to limit the range of thought. He also defined his concept of “Doublethink”, which is the ability to hold two contradictory beliefs at once and, yet accept both as reality. In 1984, the Thought Police were tasked with actually controlling what people can even think, let alone what they can say! The year 1984 has come and gone, but has George Orwell's “Big Brother” government finally started to arrive? Are many governments in the world today adopting many of the ideas and tactics outlined in George Orwell's book? If so, what government or governments are leading the way? Has Germany just put in its own version of "Thought Police"? Think about this: There is now a German Government initiative to report your family for wrong think Dr. Thiel quotes Luke 12:53 in the Bible and then goes on to further shine the light of Biblical prophecy on the answers to these '666' matters. Answers from the verses of the Bible that bring prophecy to life. Read the full article to this video titled 'Is Germany implementing Orwellian ‘1984' or communist totalitarianism?'

San Francisco ad man Howard Gossage (1917–1969) is a bit more under the radar than his Madison Avenue contemporaries, but his work in both consumer marketing and advocacy messaging was brilliant. Liberal “pro choice” messaging has historically conceded the moral high ground (“safe, legal and rare”). Amelia Bonow helped change that as the leader of the Shout Your Abortion movement. Anna Funder (international bestselling author of Wifedom) pens books about power. She is the author of the international bestsellers Stasiland, about the Stasi, which is being made into a TV series starring Elizabeth Debicki, and All That I Am, about the Nazis, which won the Miles Franklin Award. Her latest book, Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life, sees Anna take on the patriarchy. She exposes how literary giant George Orwell wrote his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy “out of existence”, despite (and possibly because of) her pivotal role in his work.Anna and I talk through Orwell's misogyny and his own “doublethink” (believing two contradictory ideas while blanking out awareness of the contradiction), plus how doublethink works to keep patriarchy going. We dig into the delicate issue of the cancellation of these kinds of figures (we both agree they shouldn't be), the passive voice technique, why women must “claim their pronouns”, the power structure difference between France and Australia and how women write books.SHOW NOTESGet your copy of Wifedom hereYou can read more about Anna here and follow her work on InstagramThis episode of Wild was recorded at Work Club, my workspace while I was in Sydney--If you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. In the United States, there is a cabal of culturally influential people who wag their fingers at the rest of us about their moral demands. We are often told by this loud group the proper ways to think, to vote, to behave, what we should watch, who we should admire and who we should scorn… yet embedded in this moral paternalism are a lot of paradoxes. EPISODE 1676: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Anna Funder, author of WIFEDOM, about George Orwell's "invisible wife" Eileen O'Shaughnessy, Orwell's homosexuality, and patriarchy as doublethink ANNA FUNDER is the author of Stasiland and All That I Am, and the novella The Girl with the Dogs. Stasiland, hailed as a ‘classic', tells true stories of ordinary people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany, and of others who worked for the Stasi. In 2004 Stasiland won the UK's premier award for non-fiction, the Samuel Johnson Prize, and was a finalist for many other awards. Anna's novel All That I Am is an homage to four German anti-Hitler activists living bravely but precariously in exile in London in the 1930s. All That I Am won many literary awards including Australia's most prestigious, the Miles Franklin Prize, and was a finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize. It spent over a year on the bestseller lists, was BBC Book of the Week and Book at Bedtime, and The Times Book of the Month. Both books are international bestsellers, published in over twenty-four countries. Originally trained as an international human rights lawyer, Anna is a former DAAD Fellow in Berlin, Australia Council Fellow, and Rockefeller Foundation Fellow. She has lived in Paris, Berlin, and Brooklyn, and now lives in Sydney, Australia. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Some in the Colorado legislature are attempting to prevent pro-life centers from saying they offer abortions, something no one has credibly accused them of doing in the first place.
A few years ago some Dr Seuss books were outright discontinued because of supposedly ‘insensitive' imagery. But before we can be enraged it is critical to take an objective look at what's happening here. The same people who get upset about professional activists are the same people who find it their duty to be offended almost daily in the name of Christ. The same people upset over book rewrites hold tight to the most edited book in history, the Bible. Although these examples cannot be entirely conflated they are important to recognize. When we talk about censorship - banning, burning, or rewriting - there is some additional context. In ancient Rome officials were elected every five years to audit, investigate and offer needed solutions to the proper function of government. These censors derive their name from the original meaning of the word censor - to scrutinize or revise. The practice was continued into the late 18th-century with States like Pennsylvania which elected censors every seven years. In truly representative Republican government with limited democracy and guarantees to the preservation of unalienable rights, people reserve the censorial power. That power is for government, though, not culture. Censors today are called ‘sensitivity readers'. Whereas Dr Seuss got the full banned treatment, Roald Dahl books are being targeted for rewrite because of ‘insensitive' words. Words like ‘fat' for Augustus Gloop and ‘Oompa Loompa' in Dahl's ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' are being replaced with ‘enormous' and ‘small men'. ‘Cloud Men' in his ‘James and the Giant Peach' are now ‘Cloud People' and Miss Spider's head is no longer ‘black', while the ‘lovely pink' skin of the Earthworm is now ‘lovely smooth' skin. Mrs. Trunchbull's face is no longer ‘great horsey' in ‘Matilda', it's just a ‘face'. In Dahl's 1983 book 'The Witches', a sentence has even been aded to suggest that witches wear wigs for many reasons and not just because they may be bald. It reads: ‘There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.' In 2018 the British Royal Mint rejected a proposal to mark the 100th anniversary of Dahl's birth with a commemorative coin. The idea was rejected on the grounds that he was “associated with anti-Semitism and not regarded as an author of the highest reputation.” What is association but conviction in the court of manipulated public opinion? Mobs demanding elusive and arbitrary justice. Karl Marx was a known racist and anti-semite but who is campaigning to ban his destructive works? This is all despite the fact that Dahl's books are meant to teach kids valuable lessons like not be a glutton and standing up for yourself. Since Roald Dahl died in 1990 he is, of course, unable to stand up for his own work and so Puffin, the publisher, hired sensitivity readers to beta-test the rewrites. Due to public backlash, Puffin decided to offer the new version and classic version. Penguin announced they would published the classic version. One may wonder if this is just a sales tactic. Other book series like Harry Potter stand strong despite the author, J.K. Rowling becoming victim to a mob which says they are able to separate art from the artist in her case - they must really enjoy their childhood heroes and not understand hypocrisy. Those calling for a banning of Potter are at least consistent while the rest hold an insane double standard. Imagine these standards being applied to history, science, genetics, math, etc. Perhaps they already have been. If books aren't banned outright they are partly censored and rewritten. Meanwhile top pop songs, social media, and modern children's books are filled with sex, porn, perversity, obscenity, hatred for parents, etc.Language itself is being reduced with every abbreviation, hashtag, and grunt that gets the average person though a conversation. This is what Eric Blaire called Newspeak while “Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” As he famously wrote in 1984: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”Any society driven by feelings and emotion rather than facts and common sense - driven by animal reactions rather than divine guidance - is one with no guidance; it is one prone to destruction. This is a system of governance based on ‘war', as in a war on ‘xyz'. Greg from Pardon My American joins us to discuss: (https://www.pardonmyamerican.com)
To discover what your government is hiding, reverse the media narrative. If George Orwell is correct, then the party will manipulate you by reversing logic. "Doublethink" is an Orwellian term that is the acceptance of, or mental capacity to accept contrary opinions or beliefs at the same time, especially as a result of political indoctrination. When applied to U.S. propaganda, the formula is revealing. Reversing everything reveals the ugly truth in that we are becoming more shallow while many people in places of power lie outright to retain that power. The “Lady Writer” who (perhaps unwittingly) bestowed upon our own Todd Pruitt his “Major Pastor” credentials is today's special guest. Co-host, professor, and rap artist Carl Trueman joins in to welcome Megan Basham, culture reporter for the Daily Wire. All superfluous titles aside, the three discuss an essential topic: the disturbing state of what is currently referred to as "responsible journalism." Why have the mainstream news and entertainment media become mere PR outlets for the political and cultural elites? When did journalists stop holding our leaders accountable, choosing instead to defend a singular perspective that would make even Orwell blush? Megan takes on her media colleagues and the most controversial topics of the day in this high-energy conversation!
