I'm back this week with yet another inspiring underdog story... but make it Christmas! This week, I'll trace the origins of one of the most beloved Christmas characters, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, all the way back to his roots on the desk of a department story copywriter in 1939 Chicago. Robert L. May was down on his luck when his boss at Montgomery Ward asked him to write a children's book that the store could hand out to customers at Christmas time. He was in debt, his wife was dying of cancer, he was struggling to support his 4 year old daughter, and he was far from achieving his dream of becoming a great American writer. But, just like his underrated title character, Robert rose to the occasion and gave the world something it needed, something that mattered.Read May's original Rudolph manuscript and listen to his daughter Barbara May Lewis read it here! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And nothing says Christmas like classic TV holiday specials! Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing sixty years ago this month, the first Rankin and Bass Christmas special asked if you recall the most famous reindeer of all. Based on the children's book by Robert L. May, originally published by Montgomery Ward, and made perhaps even more famous by the Gene Autry version of song written by May's brother-in-law Johnny Marks. The most famous version of all is the TV special produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, sponsored by GE, which aired on NBC and adapted the original story into an “Animagic” stop-motion saga featuring Rudolph, Hermey, Sam the Snowman, Yukon Cornelius, the Bumble, and more. An instant classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer kicked off a tradition of Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, including Frosy the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. A hilarious and fun reading of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by the #1 Children's book reader Lady Twizzelton and friend of Sir Herbert Sneakies. Rudolph was written by Robert L. May. Rudolph was a small reindeer with a bright shinny nose that isolated him from the other reindeer. The other reindeer made fun of Rudolph's nose. But this foggy Christmas eve Santa was assigned reindeer to guide his sleigh and be on his team. Everyone was assigned a job for Santa's big day to deliver toys but Rudolph. The storm got so bad that Rudolph's unique shinny nose got him the lead position on Santa's sled team! Rudolph finds that being unique brings great rewards. What makes you unique? Shine bright. Welcome to December 20, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate festive drinks and songs that stick.  Sangria originated in early Greek and Roman times when safe drinking water was not always available. Alcohol killed the bacteria in water and fruit made it even more drinkable. The word Sangria comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word for blood, which speaks to its color, though folks now use both red and white wines and even limoncello. At the 1964 World's Fair, Americans added an extra shot of brandy, for bonus warmth and cheer. What makes sangria truly special is the variety of flavor combinations of its seasonal fruits. No matter what's available today you can add some sparkle to your holiday party on National Sangria Day.  In 1939, the department store Montgomery Wards wanted to create their own Christmas character. They had been giving away coloring books as a promotion each year, but decided that designing their own would save money. Robert L. May was given the task and was inspired by his daughter's love for reindeer. While staring out the window at the fog, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer sprang to life and the iconic Christmas story was born. Rudolf eventually made his way into a song and the rest is Yuletide history. On Go Caroling Day, celebrate with your favorite songs and don't forget the most famous reindeer of all. Merry Christmas Eve! By gum we're going to do at least one holiday book this month, if it kills us. Heck, for that matter, why not go local? You see, Kate and Betsy both live in Evanston, Illinois and it just so happens that one of the most famous Christmas songs out there started its life as a children's book by an Evanston author! Yes indeed, we doing a deep dive into Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer today circa 1939. And not just any book, but a reprint of the original story (pre-song and pre-television adaptation) that was handed out for free in department stores all those years ago. How does it hold up to modern scrutiny? Only one way to find out: Show Notes: Kate would like to correct her earlier statement that this scene is set in Chicago (though Chicago is mentioned). That said, here's the scene she refers to, early on in our show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxtLxqBolJI FURTHER CORRECTION: At one point in the podcast Betsy says that Robert L. May wrote the book for Marshall Fields. She then almost immediately says it was Montgomery Ward. The correct department story was, in fact, Montgomery Ward. Here's an NPR piece on the behind-the-scenes tale of Rudolph: https://www.npr.org/2013/12/25/256579598/writing-rudolph-the-original-red-nosed-manuscript We find it interesting that Rudolph began his life as a department store's character and this year Macy's is doing the same dang thing! https://youtu.be/DwIUIrk56cQ Betsy Recommends: The New Vic production of Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas in New York City!: https://newvictory.org/tickets-and-events/2122-live-performance-emmet-otters-jugband-christmas/ Kate Recommends: This link to the article about ostrich cells used to make COVID detection: masks: https://tanksgoodnews.com/japanese-scientists-use-ostrich-cells-to-make-glowing-covid-19-detection-masks/ And this Etsy artist that makes ostrich ornaments: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AnimalsThatGoPlaces?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=180973083 And these socks: https://outofprint.com/products/the-monster-at-the-end-of-this-book-socks For the full Show Notes please visit: https://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2021/12/24/fuse-8-n-kate-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-by-robert-l-may-ill-denver-gillen/

Today we celebrate festive drinks and songs that stick.  If you're a fan of sangria then you already know how festive this drink can be. Pour some red or white wine into a pitcher with fruits and some seasonal spices and you'll see why the Spanish welcome this libation all year round. It is said that sangria originated in early Greek and Roman times when safe drinking water was not always available. Today true sangria is bottled in Spain and Portugal but every culture seems to make it their own with simple variations. At the 1964 World's Fair, Americans added an extra shot of brandy. On National Sangria Day, celebrate by adding some warmth and cheer to your wintertime festivities! In 1939, the department store Montgomery Wards wanted to create their own Christmas character. They had been giving away coloring books as a promotion each year, but decided that designing their own would save money. One of their admen—Robert L. May—was asked to create a character and write a children's book about it. He was inspired by his daughter's love for reindeer and had an epiphany while staring out the window at the fog. The Christmas icon he came up with was…Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which was eventually made into a song and the rest is Yuletide history. This tune is one of the most popular Christmas carols to this day. On Go Caroling Day, celebrate your own favorite repertoire of songs and don't forget the most famous reindeer of all. In Episode 5 of irRegular People, we take a much-needed break from the heavy material of 2020. It's been a hard year for most of us, in one way or another, and we thought perhaps a little Christmas Special might be nice. So, today we're joined by two younger siblings of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Martha May and Chris May are both the children of Robert L May, the man who wrote the original story of Rudolph. Chris May opens the episode by reading written remarks that he prepared. He tells a brief and beautiful history of his father and the creation of the beloved story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Then Martha and Chris deepen the tale with memories and stories about their father and their own childhood. Most of us grow up accepting Rudolph as a part of some ancient Christmas folklore, perhaps passed down for hundreds of years. But, that's just simply not the case. So, here's a short little trip into the life and mind of Robert L May, the man who created Rudolph, and some gifts from the hearts and memories of two of his children, Martha and Chris.EPISODE CREDITS:Produced, engineered, edited, and hosted by Calvin Marty.Music composed and performed by Calvin Marty.

It’s holiday time again! In this episode, I tell the tale of Santa’s most famous Reindeer. Written as an assignment from his work, Bob May created a story and character that all generations know and love. First a little booklet, then a song, and then the 1964 holiday special. I hope everyone enjoys it, even those that don’t make Christmas part of their winter celebrations. So, to all, no matter what you choose to celebrate, or even those that don’t celebrate anything at all, I hope you have a fantastic December. Show notes and links: * Robert L. Robert L. May was the man who introduced the oddball reindeer Rudolph and his triumphant tale to the world. The symbol of hope and optimism that Bob May created for himself and his daughter during some dark times kept on returning to bless him again and again. And May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.May the magic of Christmas fill every corner of your heart and home with joy and love — now and always. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas!
