It's a feat that needs no introduction. As we approach the 25th anniversary of Tiger Woods' four-major run from the 2000 US Open through the 2001 Masters, a new book from former Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine editor Kevin Cook unearths never-before-seen nuggets from this historic stretch. Cook joins host Tom Coyne to discuss The Tiger Slam, Cook's moment-by-moment chronicle that features interviews with Stevie Williams, Mark O'Meara, Butch Harmon and many others. They relive the indelible images of the Slam, including Tiger's landslide victory at Pebble and his nailbiting duel with Bob May at Valhalla, but the true treasures lie in details that have remained hidden until now. You'll learn what Tiger said to Phil walking off 13 tee at Augusta, why his team nearly scuttled his “Sportsman of the Year” dinner at the last minute, and which major Tiger played using only one tee. (Hint: It was the same one in which a nude exotic dancer paraded across the 18th green. Try finding that on a YouTube rewatch.) Kevin Cook is a former senior editor of Sports Illustrated and former editor in chief of Golf Magazine. In addition to a long career in the sports periodicals industry, Kevin has also published a number of books, the most well-known of which is Tommy's Honor, chronicling the fascinating life of Young Tom Morris during golf's early years in and around St Andrews. Cook's newest book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played details Tiger's unforgettable four-major stretch from the 2000 US Open to the 2001 Masters. We need to walk by faith in our walk with God and not by fear. Meaning we shouldn't do things out fear of the outcome but instead we should do things in faith knowing God is still God and will answer.
After Rory McIlroy's second win in three weeks at the Wells Fargo Championship, Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme discuss the showdown setting up between Rory and Scottie Scheffler at Valhalla - the site of Rory's last major win. Smylie and Charlie also have a "clutch gene" discussion as it relates to Xander Schauffele after another near miss at a marquee event while playing in the final group. Smylie is then joined by Bob May, runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, to relive that thrilling playoff finish (and Tiger's iconic walk-in putt). Finally, SK and CH discuss where Rory's week began - with the news that he would not be rejoining the policy board as reported, but instead would be assuming a role on the transaction subcommittee.00:00 Wells Fargo Championship recap19:04 Bob May on the 2000 PGA Championship won by Tiger Woods at Valhalla42:41 Discussion of Rory's new role on the transaction subcommittee

It's a not entirely merry episode of Media Path with some hard but cautionary truths about guardianships AND, a new Christmas musical that celebrates our festive diversity.Greg Thirloway and Maurice Godin are launching a new musical called Oy To The World, that celebrates the Jewish composers who brought us so many carol classics like Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Oh, Holy Night and I'll Be Home For Christmas. Then, we're speaking with investigative journalist, Diane Dimond whose new book about the dangers of guardianship is required reading in a Post-#FreeBritney world.Oy To The World: Christmas With A Twist will premiere, December 14-23, at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre: Greg and Maurice give us a sneak peak into their new show which takes place at a Catskills lodge where the new owner decides to put on a Christmas show. In so doing, Christmas carol backstories emerge. Did you know, for example that Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is inspired by writer Bob May being teased as a child about his “Jewish” nose? So, yes, not just Jesus, but also Rudolph was Jewish!Diane joins us to discuss her new book, We're Here To Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong. She shares her extensive research into the dangerously secretive and insular “legal” practices which lead to citizens losing control of their finances and their freedom. The guardianship or conservatorship systems in the U.S. are state-run,largely unregulated and increasingly populated by financially motivated predators. As we've learned from Britney, anyone who has saved some money or who is earning money is at risk. Diane offers shocking examples of the system's dysfunction and the victims and devastated family members left in its destructive wake. Diane also offers solutions and tips for keeping yourself and your family members safe. As a generation of Boomers continues aging, it is vitally important that we address, amend and federalize guardianship law.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new Joan Baez documentary on Prime and Apple TV, I Am Noise and a new crazy cult doc mini-series on Max, Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God.Path Points of Interest:Diane DimondWe're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong by Diane DimondGuardianship Central ResourcesDiane Dimond on FacebookDiane Dimond on TwitterOy! to the World: Christmas With A TwistUse Code: FRITZ for $5 discount on any performance!El Portal on FacebookEl Portal on InstagramMaurice Godin on IMDBGreg Thirloway on IMDBJoan Baez - I Am NoiseLove Has Won: The Cult of Mother God

As a careful study of the world, science is reflective and reactive — it constrains our flights of fancy, anchors us in hard-won fact. By contrast, science fiction is a speculative world-building exercise that guides imagination and foresight by marrying the known with the unknown. The field is vast; some sci-fi writers pay less tribute to the line between the possible and the impossible. Others, though, adopt a far more sober tactic and write “hard” sci fi that does its best to stay within the limits of our current paradigm while rooting visions of the future that can grow beyond and beckon us into a bigger, more adventurous reality. The question we might ask, though, is: which one is which? Our bounded rationality, our sense for what is plausible, is totally dependent on our personal life histories, cultural conditioning, information diet, and social network biases. One person's linear projections seem too conservative; another person's exponential change seems like a fantasy. If we can say one thing about our complex world, it might be that it always has, and always will, defy our expectations…Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week on Complexity, we join up with Caitlin McShea and the InterPlanetary Project's Alien Crash Site podcast for a wild discussion with SFI Trustee, technologist, and philosopher Gary Bengier about his science fiction novel Unfettered Journey. This book takes readers forward more than a century into a highly automated, highly-stratified post-climate-change world in which our protaganist defies the rigid norms of his society to follow fundamental questions about mind, life, purpose, meaning, consciousness, and truth. It is a perfect backdrop to our conversation on the role of complex systems science in our understanding of both present-day society and the futures that may, or may never, come to pass…If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe to Complexity Podcast wherever you prefer to listen, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, and/or consider making a donation at santafe.edu/give.Thank you for listening!Join our Facebook discussion group to meet like minds and talk about each episode.Podcast theme music by Mitch Mignano.Follow us on social media:Twitter • YouTube • Facebook • Instagram • LinkedInGo Deeper With These Related MediaScience:Paul Smaldino: The evolution of covert signaling in diverse societiesGeoffrey West: ScaleBob May: Will a Large Complex System be Stable?Melanie Mitchell: The Collapse of Artificial IntelligenceMelanie Mitchell: On Crashing The Barrier of Meaning in AIElisa Heinrich Mora et al.: Scaling of Urban Income Inequality in the United StatesSFI ACtioN Climate Change Seminar: Complexity of SustainabilityRaissa D'Souza: The Collapse of NetworksDavid Krakauer: Preventative Citizen-Based MedicineSimon DeDeo & Elizabeth Hobson: From equality to hierarchyPeter Turchin: The Double Helix of Inequality and Well-BeingSpeculative Fiction:2019 IPFest World Building Panel Discussion with Rebecca Roanhorse, James S.A. He's been everywhere and seen it all. Listen as Bob May tells the tales and stories that made him the California Connection.
It's the Wednesday after Christmas and before the new year, 2022, and Father Koys is back with us, seeing that this week is a gift between Christmas and New Year's allowing him to reflect on several topics to wrinkle your brains loyal listeners. First off, his shares with us the story of Bob May and his creation of the story of the most famous of Santa's reindeer: Rudolph and how when it was first written, Montgomery Ward distributed the book and Father Koys says it's more of an act of corporate goodness, rather than greed. He also reflects on recent readings and Covid-19 information and facts, again regarding the vaccines. https://ststanschurch.org/
As the Christmas season of 1938 came to Chicago, Illinois, Bob May was not feeling much in the holiday spirit and for good reason. The 34-year old father of one, who penned ads for retail giant Montgomery Ward, was exhausted and nearly broke. Worse yet, his wife, Evelyn, was bedridden and fighting valiantly against a cancer that had already stolen 2-years of her young life. One night, Bob's daughter, Barbara, asked her father: “Why isn't my mommy like everybody else's mommy?” This devastated Bob May and as he struggled to answer her heart-wrenching question, he turned to his own personal experience of growing up and decided to spin a tail for Barbara that would help ease her pain and explain their family's hardships. Little did he know, that his tale would transform the story of Christmas forever and come to entertain the world over. Thank you for joining us on this very special, very blessed Christmas Day. Gather the family together, give thanks, and enjoy an episode of The Missing Chapter Podcast that will explain the origins of one of our most time-honored stories. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themissingchapter/support
Robert L. May was the man who introduced the oddball reindeer Rudolph and his triumphant tale to the world. The symbol of hope and optimism that Bob May created for himself and his daughter during some dark times kept on returning to bless him again and again. And May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing. May the magic of Christmas fill every corner of your heart and home with joy and love — now and always. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas!
Paul Harvey - Bob May (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) (HQ)
What makes a satisfying explanation? Understanding and prediction are two different goals at odds with one another — think fundamental physics versus artificial neural networks — and even what defines a “simple” explanation varies from one person to another. Held in a kind of ecosystemic balance, these diverse approaches to seeking knowledge keep each other honest…but the use of one kind of knowledge to the exclusion of all others leads to disastrous results. And in the 21st Century, the difference between good and bad explanations determines how society adapts as rapid change transforms the world most people took for granted — and sends humankind into the epistemic wilds to find new stories that will help us navigate this brave new world. This week we dive deep with SFI External Professor Simon DeDeo at Carnegie Mellon University to explore his research into intelligence and the search for understanding, bringing computational techniques to bear on the history of science, information processing at the scale of society, and how digital technologies and the coronavirus pandemic challenge humankind to think more carefully about the meaning that we seek, here on the edge of chaos…If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe to Complexity Podcast wherever you listen, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, and/or consider making a donation at santafe.edu/engage. On this episode, Jake speaks with Bob May about concerns of fraud in the 2020 presidential election. They ask you to stand with them in taking action before January 6th.
Andy Dobson was born in London and moved to live in Scotland before starting school. He spent the next fifteen years becoming a keen birdwatcher and bibliophile. He commuted daily from a small village on the edge of the Highlands to Glasgow High School. His family moved to Essex in 1970 and he completed school at King Edwards VI Grammar School, Chelmsford where he spent a lot of time measuring a museum collection of bird eggs and trying to quantify changes in their shape and size. He went to Imperial College, London University as a Botanist and emerged as a Zoologist in 1976, he then went to Oxford to for his PhD on “The Mortality Rates of British Birds”. During his time as a graduate student, he worked as a sous-Chef at the Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant, this generated a lifetime interest in food and its production. He was then a post-doc back at Imperial with Roy Anderson working on the population dynamics of host-parasite relationships, work which led him to Princeton to work on combinations of all of the above with Bob May. He was hired at the University of Rochester in 1987 and after three years returned to Princeton in 1990, he's lived there as a member of the Ecology and Evolution faculty ever since. Andy's research focuses on the role that infectious diseases play in the dynamics of wild animal and plant populations and how this modifies the structure of food webs. Thinking about how to develop mathematical models for these problems takes him to Serengeti, Yellowstone, Panama and along the coast of California. He also works on assorted problems in conservation biology and models for animal social systems and how these interact with the dynamics of different pathogens. This work is based on the wolf population in Yellowstone, but gains insights from the lion studies in Serengeti and a long-term fascination with primate social systems. Andy has published and edited several books: “Conservation and Biodiversity”, “Population Dynamics of Diseases in Natural Populations”, and “Unsolved Problems in Ecology.” He has been an external Faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute since 2011. Increasingly his time there will be spent writing a series of books that provide introductions to the scientific systems he has studied: “Serengeti Lives”, “Parasite Lives”, “Yellowstone Lives”. He is part of the SFI “Arrow of Time” working group that is examining “Timescales and Immunity”. Andy Dobson http://dobber.princeton.edu/

Why did a MA State Rep candidate call the Middleton Police Department on us? MA State Rep candidate Robert May didn't want to answer questions about blocking a veteran from opening RiverRun Gardens, LLC, a microgrow in a Newburyport business park. May wouldn't speak and then called the police? First time anybody has ever called the police on us for asking questions. Bet his opponent Sally Kerans for State Representative won't call the police on us for asking questions... As the PGA Championship draws a collection of club professionals who join the big leagues for this one week, we examine the myriad elements that separate players at the height of the sport from those just one tier down. Whether it's physical, psychological, or a simple matter of luck, we look at why a journeyman pro named Bob May could take Tiger Woods to a playoff 20 years ago in the PGA and not keep his tour card soon after; or why certain players with plenty of talent can hang with the best in a friendly game, only to struggle once the competition begins for real.

CALLING ALPHA CONTROL: PHIL HAMILTON EPISODE SYNOPSIS: We welcome a special guest to Alpha Control; Lost in Space artist Mr. PHIL HAMILTON. Phil is an incredibly talented 3D Computer Graphic artist & a life-long Fan of Lost in Space. His passion for the show is well-known to the online Lost in Space Fan community as a result of the numerous contributions that he’s made over the years to several online series forums, show related Facebook groups & his YouTube Channel. One of his signature works is his spectacular YouTube video titled; ‘Lost in Space: Virtual Tour of Stage 6 in 1965’. It’s a fascinating digital look at one of the three sound stages used during the filming of the 1st season episode ‘One of Our Dogs is Missing’. Combing still shots from the episode with painstaking research & Phil’s beautiful CG Animation, this short film allows viewers to go back in time & experience what it was like behind-the-scenes during the filming of a classic episode of the series. Recently, he fulfilled a long-held dream & broke new ground with his stellar 3D Animated Lost in Space episode ‘Miracle in Space’. Phil’s stunning homage to Irwin Allen’s classic Sci-Fi Adventure series is the result of his talents & months of dedicated effort. The Non-Commercial Fan Film is the closest that we will ever come to having a brand-new episode of the original Lost in Space. PHIL’S BIO: Before we speak with him, a little background on Mr. Hamilton. Phil grew up in Dallas, Texas and graduated from high school in Garland Texas - a suburb of Dallas. He is a self-proclaimed “monster kid” having his formative years in the 1960s. His love of Lost in Space began when it premiered on CBS in 1965 & that devotion has never faded. In the mid 90’s he attended a Big D Super collectibles convention in 1997, where he met and spoke with Jonathan Harris in person. That brush with a LIS celebrity started him on the road to becoming a true ‘Mega Fan’ of the show. In 1999, he discovered the B9 Robot Builder’s Club, making several life-long friendships & ultimately finished his own full-scale Robot. Attendance at more conventions followed; which afforded him the opportunity to meet & interact with other cast members including the man inside the B9 Robot; the great Bob May. In addition to his love for LIS, Phil’s always had a creative ambition to make movies. His professional career in Information Technology gave him the skills but not necessarily the outlet to pursue that desire. So over time he began pursuing that dream during his spare time; experimenting & perfecting his techniques of CG film-making. With the death of Jonathan Harris in 2002, the possibility of a live-action reprise of LIS that featured the original cast members seemed to slip away forever. It was that event sparked a new idea in Phil’s mind; a CG animated episode of classic LIS using the voices of the surviving cast. “Why Not?”, he asked. Well, the rest is history. We’re going to speak with Mr. Hamilton today about his love for LIS, his life of being a ‘Super Fan’ of the series & dig deeper into his incredible 3D CG animated movies. I hope you will enjoy this compelling interview with talented Lost in Space CG animated film-maker & Series Enthusiast Mr. Phil Hamilton. So, sit back relax and enjoy. In fact, being different can be a blessing.May the magic of Christmas fill every corner of your heart and home with joy and love — now and always. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas!
