Show Notes Episode 483: “Girl…I Want to Take You to a Fern Bar” This week Host Dave Bledsoe goes through a bitter breakup with Mrs. Maria Santamarino who accuses him of stepping out with Mrs. Alice Dougherty, her arch rival at Arbor Terrace Teaneck. (He was.) On the show this week we wind up Romance Month with the rise and fall of the Fern Bar! (Blame TGI Fridays!) Along the way we learn that Dave couldn't even manage a bar in the basement of his home. (He caught himself drinking on the job and skimming the till.) Then we dive into the history of co-gendered drinking in America! (It is less boring than it sounds.) We chart women in bars through the waves of feminism and how important a place to get loaded when you are fighting the Patriarchy! We learn about Bar Nomenclature (Dance Clubs: Not Bars) and finally all about the Single Bars phenomena. (Yes, we explain the ferns.) Our Sponsor this week is Last Chance Inn, even a fat guy with a podcast has a shot here! We open with an incredibly bad 80s movie and close with Electric 6, who has plans for the evening. We continue Romance Month with a bonus episode that came into being due to our previous episode on Victor/Victoria that also just happens to work for this month's theme: The Americanization of Emily. Rankin' on Bond's Richard Hatem programs the episode to talk more Julie Andrews, James Garner, and alot of anti-war sentiment.Reuniting James Garner and Julie Andrews, the film follows Garner's Charlie Madson as he attempts to do everything he can to stay out of WWII along with falling in love with Andrew's titular Emily. Along the way, he gets involved in a plot to win a PR battle between the Army and Navy during Operation D-Day that changes his life and outlook forever. We continue Romance Month with one of the great fantasy romance films that also explores ideas of fate and, strangely, neuroscience: A Matter of Life and Death. Someone's Favorite Productions' Dr. Will Dodson and The Projection Booth's Mike White join the episode to talk David Niven, a young Kim Hunter, and the escalator to Heaven.Starring Niven and Hunter as star-crossed lovers, Niven cheats death by accident and falls in love with Hunter only to find out that the other side doesn't take kindly to making mistakes, regardless of whose fault it is. What follows is a genuine look at what it means to love, and what it also means to be British. Welcome back to another episode of The Culture Garden Podcast! We're continuing Romance Month by having a conversation about the 2020 film, Sylvie's Love. We begin Romance Month with one of the most unconventional romantic films of all time with one hell of a soundtrack: Harold and Maude. Adam's Corners Adam Long joins the episode to talk all about Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and that soundtrack by Cat Stevens.Written by Colin Higgins as his senior film thesis, it follows the titular Harold and Maude, one obsessed with death, one obsessed with living life, as they fall in love. To say its an unconventional relationship may be to understate the genuine charm and magic of the film and its leads. You know how they say Casper's the friendly ghost? Here at Spooky Tuesday, we're pretty sure he's also one of the flirtiest little phantoms we've ever met. From the second he set eyes on Christina Ricci's Kat, he knew she was the one for him, and he wasn't about to let small matters like life or death get in their way. That's what makes Casper (1995) the right fit for Romance Month, and on our latest episode, we're breaking down both our baby bisexual awakenings and those theories about just what exactly makes the Lazarus Machine run.References:https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/casper.htmlhttps://www.slashfilm.com/757824/the-1995-movie-casper-is-deeply-upsetting-and-we-need-to-talk-about-this/https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2019/08/241274/casper-movie-review-dark-ghost-story-christina-riccihttps://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/casper-friendly-ghost-1995-movie-brad-silberling-retrospective-interview

Is there any story better suited for Romance Month than Bones and All (2022)? Luca Guadagnino's new cannibalism classic hit the perfect middle ground between monster movie and doomed love. Also, if you've ever had the urge to bite someone — like maybe just a little nibble — this flick is legit the perfect recipe to satisfy your craving, because it's either going to put you off or seriously turn you on. This week, Spooky Tuesday is taking you on a bloody road trip through '80s America as we talk about Taylor Russell's baby bangs, the Edward Cullen of it all, and what finally helped Sydney get that whole ~Timothée Chalamet thing.~References: https://collider.com/bones-and-all-queer-symbolism/https://mashable.com/article/bones-and-all-review

Larry Chance and the Earls and Steve Michaels new release SONGS FOR LOVERS Larry Chance Born in South Philadelphia, PA, Larry Chance grew up in a neighborhood noted for it's show business roots, spawning such talents as Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, Mario Lanza, Danny & the Juniors, Joey Bishop, David Brenner, and many more. It was here Chance began his love affair with show business. It was 1955 when his family moved to the Bronx, NY, there Larry discovered that vocal groups were to be found on almost every street corner, so he developed one of his own in 1957, with five friends, and called his group, the High-Hatters. By 1960 the group had evolved into what would then be called "the Earls". Through the years, the original members moved on to other things. Welcome to Boozy Book Club: ROMANCE MONTH! This conversation was recorded on February 29th- that's right, it was LEAP DAY! We talked about February Book Club Books: Wicked Sexy Liar by Christina Lauren and The Rouge Not Taken by Sarah MacLean It was a small crew- just Bekah, Beth and Julie. But we had a great chat together. We stupidly thought we'd talk for just 30 min and get to bed early. WRONG. We ended up doing a fun FMK (Eff/Marry/Kill) with some of our favorite Christina Lauren characters; We talk about regency romance and how Sarah MacLean writes it differently than other authors we know. And we had a lot of great conversations about some of favorite romance books. Watch the Convo instead Mark your calendars for our next Boozy Book Club on 3/28 at 10 pm ET where we'll be reading Books that will soon be MOVIES: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman (BEKAH SAYS THE WRONG NAME ON THE PODCAST. WE'VE SINCE FIRED HER*) and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs Join our Book Club on Goodreads RSVP for our next LIVE Hangout! *No we didn't, but we did lock her in the dungeon. Tobias is there. She's fine.
