Editor - Marco Costa CHALLENGERS editor Marco Costa knew one thing going into Luca Guadagnino's recent tennis movie, and that's that Luca didn't know anything about tennis. Luca would explain to Marco that this film isn't about tennis. The incredibly kinetic action in the tennis sequences that Marco cut say otherwise. CHALLNEGERS stars ZENDAYA as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Tashi is married to Art, a champion on a losing streak. Tashi's strategy for her husband's redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick— Art's former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win? Marco Costa Editor Marco Costa first joined the cinematic world of Luca Guadagnino as a second assistant under editor Walter Fasano on Luca's film, SUSPIRIA (2018). Marco would go on to be the lead editor on Luca's film BONES AND ALL (2022), as well as his tv series, WE ARE WHO WE ARE (2020). Following CHALLENGERS, Luca and Marco have since worked together on QUEER (2024) and are currently working on the film AFTER THE HUNT. What are the different ways a filmmaker can ask something of the audience? Chas and Stu are joined by recurring guest Mel in this prelude episode to upcoming episodes on Voice Over and Breaking the Fourth Wall. In this episode, we attempt to taxonomise the different ways filmmakers can ask something directly of their audience. To this end, we identify 4 levers that can be pulled: Diagetic to non-diagetic (in story world to outside story world) Who is talking? From story-teller to a character Whom are they talking to? Themselves or directly to the audience? From when in time is the communication coming? They then take these levers and ask a series of questions, including: What does the communication want from the audience? Does the audience know who's talking? How reliable is the information? How aware is who is communicating of the audience? They then apply these questions and levers to… deep breath… STAR WARS, ROBOCOP, STARSHIP TROOPERS, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, MINORITY REPORT, CHILDREN OF MEN, NEVER HAVE I EVER, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, STRANGER THAN FICTION, DUNE, OPPENHEIMER, YELLOWJACKETS, HUSTLERS, THE OFFICE, MASTERCHEF, ZOMBIELAND, FLEABAG, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, SPONTANEOUS, BLACKKKLANSMAN, AMERICAN FICTION, AMERICAN SPLENDOR, THE KILLER, VERONICA MARS, FIGHT CLUB, SHUTTER ISLAND, SIXTH SENSE, HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR. Welcome back to another episode of the Plant Based News podcast. I am joined today by renowned American author, teacher, and vegan educator Camille DeAngelis, best known for her acclaimed novel "Bones and All”. Originally from New Jersey and currently based in Washington, DC, Camille considers herself a writer for all ages. Her previous work includes novels, practical philosophy, and the Moon Guide to Ireland, which she regularly updates. She is the author of two books of nonfiction: Life Without Envy: Ego Management for Creative People and A Bright Clean Mind: Veganism for Creative Transformation. Her best known work to date – the award-winning novel “Bones and All” – was first published in 2015 and was recently turned into a film, starring Timothee Chalamet, which premiered in 2022. The novel tells the story of a young woman named Maren, who is plagued by a compulsion to eat the bones of the people she loves. The book explores themes of love, obsession, and the nature of family, as the protagonist sets out on a journey to understand her condition and find a way to live with it. After being a longtime vegetarian, Camille became vegan in 2011. She pursued her interest in the vegan movement further and in 2013 became a certified vegan lifestyle coach and educator through Victoria Moran's Main Street Vegan Academy. The PBN Podcast is hosted and produced by Robbie Lockie, edited by Phil Marriott and researched and scripted by Antonia Georgieva. Is there any story better suited for Romance Month than Bones and All (2022)? Luca Guadagnino's new cannibalism classic hit the perfect middle ground between monster movie and doomed love. Also, if you've ever had the urge to bite someone — like maybe just a little nibble — this flick is legit the perfect recipe to satisfy your craving, because it's either going to put you off or seriously turn you on. This week, Spooky Tuesday is taking you on a bloody road trip through '80s America as we talk about Taylor Russell's baby bangs, the Edward Cullen of it all, and what finally helped Sydney get that whole ~Timothée Chalamet thing.~References: https://collider.com/bones-and-all-queer-symbolism/https://mashable.com/article/bones-and-all-review

This might be a first for Soundtracking, but if it isn't, it certainly doesn't happen very often. For in speaking to Bones And All script writer David Kajganich, we've now completed the triumvirate of director Luca Guadagnino and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. David is so insightful about the process, and also how music is fundamentally important to it. It's a fascinating listen. We're also giving away a pair of tickets to a screening of The Fabelmans in this episode - so have a listen to find out how to win!

Luca Guadagnino's new BONES AND ALL follows a pair of young people on a killing spree across America, which put us in mind of lovers-on-the-lam movies generally and Terrence Malick's debut feature BADLANDS specifically. But Guadagnino's film resists such easy classification, from its questionable status as a cannibal romance to its malleable central metaphor. So this week we gnaw on BONES AND ALL's blood-soaked nuance, before pairing it with BADLANDS to consider how the two films deploy their voiceover narration, charismatic killers, and rationalizations for violence. And in Your Next Picture Show, we offer up a buffet of other cannibalism stories from across pop culture that have stuck with us. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about BADLANDS, BONES AND ALL, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more. Just a quick announcement: Next week's Filmcast episode will cover Avatar: The Way Of Water, not Bones And All as originally promised. The podcast will also come out two days later than usual, on Thursday night, so that we can have a full spoiler-filled conversation about the movie. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Luca Guadagnino's new BONES AND ALL slots nicely into the tradition of films about outlaw lovers on the lam, but also bucks the tropes of that tradition in a manner reminiscent of Terrence Malick's mold-breaking BADLANDS. This week we're looking back at Malick's 1973 feature debut to pinpoint what differentiates it from other young-outlaw tales and what distinguishes it as an early Malick film, in particular its voiceover narration and fascination with the natural world. Plus, two of the year's most talked-about films, TÁR and THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, get talked about some more via listener feedback. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about BADLANDS, BONES AND ALL, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Luca Guadagnino, director of Call Me By Your Name, talk about his new movie, the dark cannibal romance Bones And All, and to spare him the ignominy of Chris Hewitt bellowing *that* song at him, we asked John Nugent to Zoom with Guadagnino instead. The result is a fascinating and frank discussion about the director's creative process. Also being frank and fascinating about their creative process is Tim Minchin, the genius songwriter behind the tunes of this week's Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical. He talks to Helen O'Hara about turning the hit stage musical into a movie, and about the sad failure of the quite wonderful Groundhog Day The Musical. Then, in the podbooth, Chris Hewitt returns and, as well as Googling 'how to host a podcast', welcomes Helen, James Dyer and fourth chair newcomer, Kelechi Ehenulo for discussions of random encounters with Emma Thompson in a lift, the best sequels to not feature the main character from the previous movie, the week's movie news (such as it is; thanks a bunch, Thanksgiving!), and review Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, She Said, Strange World, Matilda, The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special, and more. It's podcast time — gobble gobble!
It's a welcome return to Soundtracking for Luca Guadagnino, a writer and director who always talks so eloquently and revealingly about the music in his films. His latest project is Bones And All. The ensemble cast features Timonthee Chalamet, Taylor Russell and Mark Rylance in what is part horror, part romantic road movie and part period drama. Bones and All is scored by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor - or A & T as Luca describes them - who will themselves be joining us soon.
"Bones And All" had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received positive notices for how well it blended different genres to create a moving, layered and singular work. An adaptation of the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, screenwriter David Kajganich is reuniting with director Luca Guadagnino after previously collaborating on "A Bigger Splash" and "Suspiria," and the result has put the film in the awards conversation. David was kind enough to talk about the adaptation process, the themes, the characters, and how he and Luca came up with a different ending than the novel. Please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Zoe Rose Bryant & Dan Bayer. Together we're reviewing the latest film from Luca Guadagnino, "Bones And All," starring Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet & Mark Rylance. A true genre blend of romance, horror, and coming of age, wrapped up in a cannibal road movie, Guadagnino and screenwriter David Kajganich's follow up to "Suspiria" is captivating audiences with its storytelling and artistry. What did we think of the performances, writing, themes, and score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross? Tune in below for our SPOILER-FILLED review as we discuss all of these points, plus how we feel about its awards season prospects. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
