Revisiting an episode from January 2023.....For so many of us, fly fishing is also about the people, places and experiences we have, especially whilst discovering new places. And so, for this latest episode of Ireland on the Fly, we speak to Cork fly angler, Ronan Collins, whom Daire first met in Greenland last year. Ronan has fished in many far flung places around the world and is a particularly keen salmon angler with incredible stories from Russia and elsewhere, plus he also introduced Daire to the wonders of yacht-rock, but more on that later in the show… Speaking to Ronan and hearing his stories about fly fishing around Ireland and the world is a reminder that it's about fly fishing and about so much more. Ronan Collins will present his final regular music show today, after 43 years behind the mic on the RTÉ Radio schedules
Yesterday, December 9th 2022, I read the sad news that my one-time fellow broadcaster in RETE Radio 1, Ronan Collins, is vacating his daily music show, though he will still do occasional programmes for the station. Even so, for 43 years, his voice has been part of the social fabric of Irish society, so, today, I put together this, my personal tribute to the man - even though he slagged me!
Ronan Collins started his show business career as a member of a showband playing drums. His radio show on RTÉ Radio 1 has been running for many years. He began his national radio career on RTÉ Radio 2, having worked on pirate radio. He presented the celebrity game show Play the Game from 1984 to 1995. He also used to present the Lotto draw and most recently A Little Bit Showband (2008–2009). Ronan has commentated on the Eurovision Song Contest for RTÉ One television. He has also been a compere at the heats of the Castlebar Song Contest.

September 9, 2021 - It was a day of reckoning. A day of joy and celebration for Malaysian mothers who have been trying so hard for years to finally get an affirmation by the Kuala Lumpur High Court that children born overseas to Malaysian mothers and foreign fathers are automatically entitled to Malaysian citizenship. However, the Attorney General's Chambers had filed an appeal against the high court decision on September 14. In this episode, I speak to Ronan Collins, spouse to Malaysian mother, Choong Wai Li who is one of the six mothers together with Family Frontiers, started the legal proceedings last year seeking a declaration that Malaysian women married to foreign spouses can automatically get citizenship for their children who are born overseas. There were an estimated 40,000 pending applications from Malaysian women seeking citizenship for their children. Public pressures are mounting and growing calls by lawmakers, even members of the cabinet, to rescind the decision by the Attorney-General's Chambers to appeal against the case. Question is, will the new Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri uphold his mantra of “Keluarga Malaysia”? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/norman-goh/message
