SassafrasCast Teaches Tarot: The Suit of Cups (Episode 38) In today's episode I take you on a ~beautiful emotional journey~ through the suit of Cups in the tarot! We explore the element of water and the wisdom it has to offer on your emotional journey. As per usual, I include a small rant about harmful gender stereotypes and how much I am unwilling to apply them to the tarot. The King and Queen are equal and both approach this element with mastery. I also offer you an elemental visualization practice to help you work with your emotions as valued messengers. In today's episode I talk about ritual and spellwork, and discuss the pros and cons of following a tried-and-true path such as rituals from a spellbook or a ceremonial tradition, vs kind of making it up as you go along and hoping for the best. A mission to heal through music. If you want to know the person behind the music and the great artists that contribute to the Long Island Sound this is the episode for you. ? Every once in a blue moon, lady luck strikes, and your curiosity blossoms and fascinations develop as you discover someone new. This muse struck me as I was drilling down on my encounter with Rorie Kelly, a fierce and joyful singer/songwriter from Long Island. Rorie is not easily defined and that's what I love about her unabashed style of music & muse. In this episode, there is no mask to remove from the artist, just raw honesty and joy to encounter. As I began to peel away at her catalog of music, I have discovered a thread of social justice and a beautiful voice for the marginalized in our society. Although we have never met face-to-face yet, I have been blessed to get a glimpse of a human that I want to know more about. In unraveling the “mystery” of the Long Island Sound, I endeavor to reveal the person behind the music, and as with this episode, the journey goes just a bit deeper. We never discussed Neil Young during our visit, but his lyric has been making its way to my mind in thinking about Rorie, “Think of me as the one you've never figured”! Her battle cry and melodic scream are to bring healing through music. As a prophetic voice and lament on the way we might see with a new vision, I welcome her invitation as she speaks up for herself and her community! Walter Brueggemann said it well”“The task of prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish, and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us.” The new album Shadow Work is about shining a light in the darkness, getting real, getting raw, and healing wounds. “The practice of shadow work is about sifting through those parts of ourselves that we have pushed down and suppressed over the years,” the singer explains. “It's about showing up for our whole selves and finding healing.” The production is big, dark, and performed largely by just two people – Rorie herself, and her father and production partner, Kevin Kelly. “It was exciting to us to see just how much power we could pack into these songs as two humans in a studio with a vision,” says Rorie. The songwriting looks deeply into topics like self-worth, growth, and letting go, and how our culture treats people who don't fit the mainstream “default.”Rorie started a weekly Livestream series called Monday Night Muses, which streams every Monday night from 7-9 pm ET at twitch.tv/roriekelly. It's my 50th episode! Time flies whether or not you're having fun. I finally get to interview Rorie Kelly of Sassafras Tarot, who is also a ladybeast musician: check her out on and on all streaming sites!
Indie singer/songwriter Rorie Kelly has been compared to Joni Mitchell and Sara Bareilles for her catchy-confessional songwriting style, and to Alanis Morissette and Janis Joplin for her raw powerhouse vocals. She checked in with Robin Renée to talk about life as a full-time indie musician, the entrepreneurial drive that makes it possible, and the activist determination that fuels many of the songs as well as challenging conversations on and off the stage. Rorie also shares about her latest single, "Alternative Facts," the hopeful "If You Teach a Bird to Sing," exploring spirituality, and more. The Leftscape takes a breather from the anxiety-filled news cycle this week to report on two happy happenings and positive actions in the world -- the sweet, inspiring Spread the Love! project that is being documented on Instagram, and the wickedly funny activism of Cards Against Humanity Hacks the Election. This Day in History recalls the 1814 London Beer Flood and the OPEC Oil Embargo and subsequent gas rationing in 1973. Birthdays include Ziggy Marley, Gary Puckett, Irene Ryan, Arthur Miller, Evel Knievel, and Eminem. Here are some of the reasons to celebrate, learn, or do something interesting: Dwarfism Awareness Month, Inktober (Wendy Sheridan's Inktober drawings can be found @wendycards, Earth Science Week, Alternative Fuel Day, National Pasta Day, National Mulligan Day, Hagfish Day, Black Poetry Day, and World Vasectomy Day. Wendy also talks about Jodie Whittaker as the new Dr. Who and Mary McGinley recalls that her Shakespeare teacher appeared in an early Dr. Who episode. Hi Podcast listeners! Thanks for downloading. Be sure to get a copy of the Break the Business audiobook, now available on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes! This week, Ryan talks about the Harvey Weinstein scandal and why it is a symptom of a greater problem with the entertainment industry as a whole--a problem to which the music business is definitely not immune. Ryan references past Podcast guests Rorie Kelly and Krista Hartman to discuss the problem and steps that can be taken to make things better for women. To drill down into this issue further, Ryan sits down with music journalist Cherie Hu (Forbes, Billboard). Cherie recently wrote an article entitled "Unbalancing Act, How Conferences Perpetuate the Music Industry’s Gender Parity Crisis." Ryan talks to Cherie about her article and also gets her insight on the future of the music industry. Sorry for the unintentional hiatus! This week's episode is about differences in tarot decks and how to approach cards with differing symbolism, as well as ways you can connect with a deck both physically and mentally. This topic was suggested by Rorie Kelly of Sassafras Tarot, although I get nothing for plugging her except her love. Don't hesitate to shoot me a comment or email at with your comments and suggestions for future podcasts!
Hi Podcast Listeners! Thanks for downloading. In the first segment, Ryan talks about the Oscars and answers a listener e-mail about whether indie musicians can still achieve success in the age of streaming. Is there still a place for indie artists in the music business when they are only making fractions of a penny per stream? Ryan answers this with an emphatic "yes," and notes that now has never been a better time to be an indie artist, even with the new challenges presented by changes in technology and the way people consume music. In the second segment, indie artist and Go Girls Music executive director Rorie Kelly stops by. She discusses the challenges that women face in the music industry and how men can be better allies. She also talks about Go Girls' upcoming Ladies in the House Online Music Festival. The Festival is currently seeking participants. If you are a female artist or a member of a band with at least one female member, you can sign up by visiting bit.ly/2lFGrg5. In the final segment, Ryan discusses the movie La La Land and the lessons it imparts to indie artists. It is Ryan's first week trying to do a full pop culture segment on his own, so be nice! Hi Podcast Listeners! Thanks for downloading this week. In the first segment, Ryan and Dave discuss last week's Rorie Kelly interview and Dave provides some interesting insight on the current composition of women in the executive ranks of major labels. Ryan and Dave also discuss the recent lawsuit between 19 Recordings and Sony Music. At issue in the case is whether Sony is shortchanging its artists by paying out streaming revenue at an unfairly low rate. The case underscores the outdated contractual structures that labels continue to embrace (to the detriment of its artists) even as the music industry continues to rapidly change. In the second segment, musician, marketing expert, and Music Marketing Manifesto founder John Oszajca stops by to talk about his years as a label artist. He also gives some very useful marketing tips and discusses how artists can market themselves effectively even on a limited budget. Check out John's enriching music marketing training programs by visiting musicmarketingmanifesto.com. In the final segment, Ryan and Dave talk about their frustration with sports on television. They also give their thoughts on the recent viral video of a Christian mother-of-four ranting about the explicit lyrics in the hip hop song "Norf Norf" by Vince Staples. Thank you all very much for listening! Rate/review/subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes and SoundCloud. Like Break the Business on Facebook. Follow Ryan @ryankair and Dave @metaldave85. I share these strategies: *Make a private Twitter list of everyone who's contributed to your crowdfunding campaign. *Do individual and group tweets thanking your contributors. *Your contributors are your super fans. *Send your super fans/contributors pre-written tweets to make it easy for them to help. *Use Bit.ly to shorten and track the pre-written tweet links. *Use Click to Tweet to create a pre-written tweet. *Use Advanced Twitter Search Show notes for this episode can be found at www.madalynsklar.com/twittersmarter5 If you have a question about Twitter you'd like me to answer on this podcast, please go to MadalynSklar.com/speakpipe You can reach out to our guest @RorieKelly on Twitter and her website. CALL TO ACTION: Create a list of your Super Fans. This will help you easily keep tabs on them so you can favorite and retweet their tweets. This also makes it easy to jump into their conversations. I also want you to try out the Twitter Advanced Search. You can reach me on Twitter @MadalynSklar and my website at MadalynSklar.com

Rorie Kelly is a Long Island-based singer/songwriter whose first-time listeners often remark that they “can’t believe that voice came out of that body.” Rorie writes catchy, melodic rock songs that she plays with enough passion to break guitar strings--and go right on playing without batting an eye. She has been compared to artists ranging from Fiona Apple to Janis Joplin to Liz Phair. Rorie has opened for Alix Olsen and Jen Chapin, and was named one of Long Island’s “Top Ten Indie Artists You’ve Never Heard Of” by Pulse Magazine. She recently released her first full-length record, Wish Upon a Bottlecap. The album has hit the airwaves with a vengeance. Wish Upon a Bottlecap is getting spins on Triple-A and college radio stations across the country. Rorie can often be seen in the company of her band, Rorie Kelly and More of the Mess.
