The Leadership Stack Podcast

Sean: So you mentioned optimism being one of them, perhaps your favorite, your favorite one because that's the one you mentioned right off the bat. And I know very few people, very few people, thank God, who are pessimists. They'd like to call themselves realists these days. And how can I? I'm wondering if there is a way I'm not forcing this question. How can we kind of turn the table and flip the script, finally tell them, hey, you know what? If you keep on like this, I don't think a lot of good is going to come into your life. Is there a strategy for us to allow them to see that being an optimist or having good optimism is very valuable for them? Devin: Yeah, that's a good thought. And really my response to that is that's why I wrote my book because the easy audience is the audience that says, I agree with everything you're saying. The difficult audience is the audience that says, I don't I don't know that I agree with what you're saying. Oh, well, allow me to make an argument, read the book, read the stories. Are you compelled to consider that maybe optimism is more important than being a pessimist or being a realist? And to see if I can persuade the tougher audience to recognize the importance of our values. And granted, there'll be some people who just will ignore the path that I'm on, and that's okay. But hopefully for those people out there saying I'm looking for some things that I can do that are easy, small, simple things that I can do that will make a positive difference, maybe in my personal life or in my professional life. And I'd love to try something out. I think my book could possibly help that kind of person. Sean: Aside from optimism, Devin, what are some things people should learn or should get out of your book and apply to their lives? Devin: Yeah. Let me start with what you just said, how can they apply it to their lives? So in the book, I outlined values, my priority values. Some people might call them core values, but they're priorities for me. But my book is really an invitation for you to discover what your values are, and what's important to you. So I share my values as maybe a template for others to plug in their values. For example, I write about kindness and what an important value that is to me, and gratitude and the importance of the value of service, and maybe thinking a little bit less about ourselves and more about others. I write about integrity, and I write a lot about my mother, who is probably for me the best personification of integrity. I write about communication and humility. And the last value I write about, it's the value of the initiative. If we don't have the drive or something to put one foot in front of the other, take that initiative. Everything else can be hollow. And so I share some thoughts about the importance of taking that first step. And maybe it's just a small step, but the importance of initiative and making positive changes in our lives. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Devin Durrant LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devin-durrant-a493906/ Website: https://thevaluesdelta.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DurrantDevin

I have to do it.""It's those small promises that build confidence that allow you to reach the bigger goals."""I don't care what perfect you know, host looks like or how pretty the picture looks or what's in the background? You know, what's most important is what's coming out of the person's heart and out of their mouth.""My point is that is where a lot of my confidence has come from. Is from biting off those, snapping off small winds.""You have to start out with these routines and these mornings like you from 5 to 9. You've got a regimen in place. On today's episode, routine & rituals, self awareness leads to accountability, Welcome to this episode of the podcast where we'll be discussing the importance of routines and rituals, why they should not be rigid and need to be flexible, and how self-awareness leading to accountability can impact your success. The Importance of Routines and Rituals: Routines and rituals provide structure and predictability to our daily lives, reducing stress and increasing productivity. They help us to form good habits and achieve our goals by breaking them down into manageable steps. However, it's important to remember that routines and rituals should not be rigid and inflexible, as this can lead to burnout and boredom. The Benefits of Flexible Routines and Rituals: Flexible routines and rituals allow for spontaneity and creativity, which can lead to new experiences and opportunities. They also enable us to adapt to changes and challenges in our lives, which is crucial for long-term success. Being open to making adjustments to our routines and rituals can help us to stay motivated and avoid feeling stuck in a rut. Self-Awareness and Accountability: Self-awareness is the ability to understand and recognize our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It allows us to identify areas where we need to improve and make positive changes. By holding ourselves accountable for our actions and decisions, we can take ownership of our lives and work towards our goals with greater focus and determination. The Impact of Self-Awareness and Accountability on Success: When we are self-aware and accountable, we are better able to manage our time and prioritize our tasks effectively. We can also develop better relationships with others by being honest and transparent in our communication. Ultimately, self-awareness and accountability are key components of achieving long-term success and fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. Are you looking for inspiration to overcome whatever obtacles life throws at you as well as insights into success, diversity and inclusion?   On this episode of the Live Greatly Podcast Kristel Bauer sat down with Bruce Jackson, author of NEVER FAR FROM HOME: My Journey from Brooklyn to Hip Hop, Microsoft, and the Law.  Bruce is an Associate General Counsel for Microsoft and a former entertainment and tax attorney who represented hip hop royalty including LL Cool J, Heavy D, Busta Rhymes, M.C. Lyte, Jazzy Jeff, and Little Kim. Bruce provides a look into his journey out of poverty and what helped him get and stay motivated to go after a bigger vision for his life.  Bruce also provides his take on the key ingredients for success and happiness as well as a look into how companies can support diversity and inclusion. Tune in now! Key Takeaways from This Episode: Bruce's journey growing up in pre-gentrified New York City How Bruce got out of poverty and into entertainment law representing hip hop royalty A look into Bruce's book NEVER FAR FROM HOME: My Journey from Brooklyn to Hip Hop, Microsoft, and the Law.  Big life lessons from Bruce's journey Bruce's ideas for supporting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in the world Importance of leadership for diversity A look into diversity and inclusion within Microsoft Bruce's take on the ingredients for success and happiness What helped Bruce defy the odds Order Bruce's Book HERE About Bruce Jackson: Bruce Jackson is the Associate General Counsel for Microsoft and a former entertainment and tax attorney.  In his stirring memoir of grit and perseverance NEVER FAR FROM HOME: My Journey from Brooklyn to Hip Hop, Microsoft, and the Law (Atria Books; Hardcover; February 7, 2023; $28.00; ISBN: 9781982191153), by Bruce Jackson -- with a Foreword by Microsoft's Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith – is his inspirational story of his rise from childhood poverty in pre-gentrified New York City to a stellar career at the top of the technology and music industries. However, this is not a “corporate memoir,” but rather the memoir of a Black man from meager origins and an imperfect background who reached great heights in corporate America. Born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Bruce moved to the infamous NYCHA projects -- Amsterdam Houses -- in Manhattan, as a teenager, where he was harassed by street cops and seduced by drug dealers. He found a way out, graduated from Hofstra University then Georgetown Law School, and cut his teeth working in entertainment law. As an entertainment attorney he represented hip hop royalty including LL Cool J, Heavy D, Busta Rhymes, M.C. Lyte, Jazzy Jeff, and Little Kim. Jackson transitioned from entertainment into a wildly successful corporate law career. The book offers lessons on life but also lessons in business. NEVER FAR FROM HOME reveals the ups and downs of an incredible journey, the obstacles overcome, and valuable business and life lessons learned along the way. Summary/AbstractDr. Jim welcomes Hamid Bangura to the show to discuss the importance of access to opportunity being the true foundation for success, rather than talent alone. They discuss how it is important to not confuse what makes sense with what drives one to make a difference, as well as why one cannot KPI their way to success if their product is people. Hamid reveals that he has been an independent contributor as a technical recruiter, covering a wide range of skill sets primarily on the IT side, ranging from engineering to executive recruiting. Hamid  is a recruitment manager who has been in the staffing and recruiting industry for  years. He has worked in management, director and national roles, and has traveled to other countries such as India to help build branches there. His current role is working for Amazon AWS, where he deals with high-level software engineers and software development managers. He is also responsible for offers and interacting with the business. Hamid immigrated to the United States from Sierra Leone when he was young, with his parents, in search of opportunity. They settled in a small town in Central Illinois.Hamid Bangura's parents made the decision to immigrate to the United States from Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, the quality of education and access to basic necessities like consistent power had been declining, making life there increasingly difficult. Therefore, they decided that the US would offer a better future for their family. He and Dr. Jim also discussed the similarities of their immigration stories, as both of them immigrated at a young age from their respective countries. Hamid shares his experience of life in Sierra Leone during the civil war. Hamid's family were still living there at the time and they relied on short wave radio for news. The war lasted 11 years, had a devastating effect on people, and the family tried to help in whatever way they could. Hamid only returned to Sierra Leone in 2017, and saw first-hand the extreme poverty and lack of resources. He also saw that people were still enjoying life and being resilient despite the difficult circumstances. He noted that there is no middle class, only those with money and those who struggle, and that the open-air markets are selling mostly goods from Asia. Lastly, he pointed out that many people lack access to clean water and food, making life even more difficult.Timestamps00:01:54Conversation with Hamid Bangura: A Journey from Sierra Leone to Amazon AWS00:06:11Heading: A Day in the Life of a Sierra Leoni During Civil War Conflict00:09:17Conversation on the Impact of Civil War and Underdevelopment in Sierra Leone00:15:14From the DC Area to Charleston, Illinois00:18:29 Navigating Cultural Identity in Central Illinois00:25:31Conversation on Immigrant Experiences and Educational Achievement00:30:00 Career Paths and Human Capital Management00:36:00Adjusting to a Career in Staffing00:39:17 Reconciling Metrics and People in the Staffing Industry00:40:49"The Benefits of Focusing on Outcomes in Staffing"00:44:00 Achieving Success in the Staffing IndustryMusic Credit: Music Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera Follow us at: www.cascadingleadership.comlinkedin.com/in/drjimklinkedin.com/in/1lawrenceobrown

As the new year approaches, many business owners and professionals are looking to set goals for the upcoming year. Whether you're looking to grow your business, increase profits, or simply improve efficiency, setting goals can help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year. But how do you go about setting goals that are both achievable and challenging? One effective method is to use the SMART acronym, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. A specific goal is one that is clearly defined and easy to understand. For example, "increase profits by 10% in the next six months" is a specific goal, while "improve profits" is not. Measurable goals have a clear way to track progress. In the example above, the goal is to increase profits by 10%, which can be easily measured by comparing profits at the start and end of the six-month period. Achievable goals are those that are realistic given your current resources and circumstances. If you don't have the necessary staff or equipment to achieve your goal, it may not be realistic. Relevant goals are those that align with your overall business objectives. If your goal doesn't contribute to the overall success of your business, it may not be worth pursuing. Finally, time-bound goals have a specific deadline for completion. This helps to create a sense of urgency and ensures that you stay on track. Once you've identified your goals, it's important to create a plan for achieving them. This may involve breaking your goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks, setting deadlines, and identifying any resources or support you may need. It's also important to be flexible and open to adjusting your goals if circumstances change. Life and business are unpredictable, and it's okay to reassess and make adjustments as needed. Finally, don't forget to celebrate your successes along the way. Achieving your goals is an accomplishment, and recognizing your progress can help keep you motivated. In conclusion, setting new year, new goals for your business can help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year. By using the SMART acronym and creating a plan for achieving your goals, you can increase your chances of success and make meaningful progress toward your business objectives.

Improve your clinical practice with this simple yet effective strategy. On this episode of Teach Me Something Tuesday on the Healthcare Education Transformation podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of reflection in becoming a great clinician. Reflection is a key component that many expert clinicians have, but often times novice clinicians do not. Reflecting on a day-to-day, week-to-week, or even year-to-year basis can help you identify patterns and areas for improvement. For this new year, take the time to reflect on how the previous year went and consider implementing reflection as a regular practice. Dr F Scott Feil is a husband, a father, a physical therapist, a professor, and most recently an Amazon best-selling author. F Scott is also a business coach and mentor despite starting his journey as an English major before landing as a Physical Therapist. He is one of the creators and co-hosts of the Healthcare Education Transformation Podcast which aims to break down the silos between healthcare professions in an attempt to find best practices in teaching and learning throughout healthcare academia. He also hosts the Professors of Profit Podcast where he interviews healthcare professionals about their side gigs and side hustles. His goal is to help at least 222 professors (one from every PT School at the time of publication of his book) and clinicians pay off their student loans quicker and/or more efficiently by using multiple revenue streams. If he helps some others with terminal degrees or other healthcare clinicians along the way, then it's a bonus! He is also the owner of PTEducator.com , FGI Consulting, and Epic Therapy and Wellness. His areas of interest are in the realms of Geriatrics, Service Based Learning, and Business. Special thanks to both our sponsors, The NPTE Final Frontier, and Varela Financial! What makes them unique is that they view financial planning as like running hurdles on a track. And for PTs, the first hurdle many of us run into is student loan debt. Varela Financial will help you get over that hurdle. They not only take the time to explain to you which plans you individually qualify for and how those plans work, but they ALSO take the time to show you what YOUR individual case looks like mapped out within each option. Nova Twins are two best friends, Georgia South and Amy Love, who've just had a life-changing year. Based in London, Nova Twins have taken elements of punk, grime, punk, hard rock, and even dance, to craft a sound that's distinctly them; a sound that's caused them to be impossible to place within a box. However, the most alluring thing about them isn't only the music, but also how Nova Twins have been able to build a world around them. Their social media, videos, and photography all reflect a group that wants to leave a lasting impact; a group that aims to leave you wanting more beyond their fast-paced songs. A major aspect of this is how both Georgia and Amy advocate for living your truth; essentially by saying what's on their mind and not caring how it might be perceived or interpreted. That's what today's podcast is all about: the two of them sharing the story of Nova Twins, with an exploration of the hardships they've faced to get to where they are now. And yes, we do of course shat about the work that went into crafting their Mercury Prize-nominated album, Supernova. Nova Twins will be touring across the UK and Ireland this February, starting on February 8th at The Lexington in London. Visit their website for ticket info and tour dates.
