Show Notes Episode 459: “I Can Call You Geraldo, and You Can Call Me Al Capone This week Host Dave Bledsoe goes searching for buried treasure (meaning he dug through his Winter coats looking for money to buy booze.) On the show this week we talk about that time Geraldo Rivera knocked down a wall in Chicago on live TV because someone lied about Al Capne having a vault there. Along the way we discover why a young Dave spends all that time in the bathroom claiming he was “brushing his teeth”. (He was touching himself.) THen we dive right into the backstory with a little about Al Capone (bad guy) and a lot more about Geraldo Rivera (really bad guy). From there we discover how the guy from the People's Court (Not Judge Wapner or Rusty the Bailiff) was instrumental in getting The Mystery of Al Capone's Vault on television. (He had to pay for that hairpiece somehow.) Then we give the step by step of how at least thirty million Americans watched so dudes dig a hole for two hours only to find some papers and empty liquor bottles. (They could have just looked under Dave's bed if that is what they wanted.) We close with how this resurrected Geraldo's career. (Sometimes, dead is better.) Our Sponsor this week is Nunzio's Locksmithing and Safe Cracking, WHY you personally can't open the thing, THAT is YOUR BUSINESS. We open the show with a promo for the vault show and close with The Barefoot Movement who want you to know you can call them Al. On today's episode, Kunle is joined by Steven Sashen, Founder of Xero Shoes, a lightweight minimalist footwear company dedicated to giving people the freedom of barefoot movement with just enough protection and an authentic style. Have you spent hundreds of dollars on a pair of running shoes? Of course, you did! You bought a pair that has the latest and improved design. It has the best ankle support, heel counter, and arch support for your running needs but did you know that those aren't needed? It's a shocker. Study shows that running barefoot reduces the risk of injuries that one might gain while using running shoes. Your feet, without the bells and whistles, can do a better job at running. As featured in Shark Tank, Xero Shoes is a barefoot wear that's biochemically identical to being barefoot but with a layer of protection. It's a high-tech version of mankind's favorite footwear. How do you create a global movement, when your taskforce can't read, write or speak a common language? When I first emailed today's guest to invite him on the show, this was his reply:"Totally mystified as to why on earth you want to talk to an old Gandhian living in the middle of the Rajasthan desert?"This was my email back:"I can't think of a better reason to want to talk to you."This exchange is the perfect introduction to the humility and humor of Bunker Roy.Today's GuestBunker is global changemaker, Founder of the Barefoot College in India and listed as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. How can kicking off your shoes and going barefoot improve your health? Advocate for the barefoot lifestyle, founder of The Barefoot Movement and qualified podiatrist Paul Thompson says it's possible to reduce pain and discomfort by strengthening the body to support itself without shoes. Paul tells Kathryn he thinks orthotics are over-prescribed and that going barefoot more often activates muscles and nerves made redundant by shoes - making him feel younger.
The Baby of Bethlehem is the topic of this very personal episode of the Merry Little Podcast. We sing of Him in song and celebrate the Nativity as a part of every Christmas - but why? Based on this sincere question from a listener we discuss the tender mercies of Christmas and the effect it has on the living and the dead. How does one without faith makes sense of it all? Our listener celebrates the season year round, enjoys great traditions of family and joy, and yet cannot connect the merriment to the manger. He wants to understand without the preachy demands of church. So we explore why The Baby is Christmas in simple, fundamental terms of truth. We find that in these hard times The Baby is more relevant and important than ever. What fascinates the most is that they knew He was coming. His birth was anticipated like no other and that theme of anticipation has carried over to our modern celebrations of Christmas thousands of years later. But how can we celebrate Him in the shadow of Santa, Christmas trees, snowmen and stockings? We find that it is okay, that each of the elements of Christmas we cherish, even those of a secular nature, can add to the light of Christmas. This episode features more new music from The Barefoot Movement with a great song titled I Just Wish It Would Snow. Please visit their YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBuoyYzXlguK3jkYjdiA7cQ for more great music. Also featured is another great Christmas song from Angie Killian and Shawna Edwards. Their work - performed by children - teaches the beauty of the story of The Baby and we're grateful for it. This episode also features recent work by Santa's Sleigh, a merry little outreach effort of the Merry Forums of MyMerryChristmas.com to give back each Christmas. This true story illustrates how the simple principle of anonymous giving elevates the many who focus on the one or the few.
We are pleased to present our annual and traditional episode of new Christmas music. This is far and away our most popular episode every year and it has nothing to do with the host. These featured artists graciously offer up their music for review and allow us to include them in this special episode. Evidently you love it too. Last year's episode has not only been listened to more than a quarter of a million times it is still going strong, drawing downloads in the thousands weekly. This episode is even better that one. With us approaching our 2nd pandemic Christmas these great Christmas creators are all conveying through their music exactly what it is that we feel, what we value in Christmas and how we want this Christmas to be. It is, at the end of the day, all about love. We did not plan for this theme (or any theme at all) for this episode it has just spontaneously happened. Please listen and enjoy, especially for those artists who took the time to talk with us to share some of the backstories of these great songs. Upstate New York brothers make music that is “too retro,” and a barefoot movement takes to the stage, 5,000 miles away. This is episode 43 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song . Thank you to Sarah for this list of artists and songs for the feature. The Gibson Brothers , Leigh and Eric, were offered a major record deal in Nashville when they were in their 20’s. They were told at the last minute that they were too “retro” for modern country music. That didn’t stop them from making music, though, and they went on to be recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association as back-to-back Entertainers of the Year in 2012 and 2013. The Barefoot Movement is a young acoustic quartet whose credits include projects by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. In 2014 they made the 5,000 mile trek to the West African nation of Burkina Faso to perform a series of shows at the invitation of the American Embassy there. Everywhere they performed, the locals performed for them,

This episode is packed with interesting nuggets about the benefits and misconceptions about barefoot movement and barefoot shoes. I chat with Mountain Chang, a CPA turned founder of the barefoot shoe company, Carets. Carets makes classy high end dress shoes - think Allen Edmonds - but with barefoot features like a zero drop design and wider toe box. (I don't receive a commission for this: you can use the coupon code 2019hippiecritical for $30 off if you shop at Carets.) In this episode, we talk about... The interesting origins of barefoot movement Benefits of barefoot movement and why barefoot shoes exist Why the "standard" approach to shoe design - cushioning, heels, space - is not designed for the human foot to have full range of motion. (Explains why higher heels are especially bad for the foot - not just for women.) The members of Nashville quartet the Barefoot Movement share how they came upon their version of bluegrass music.
