Credits:Theme Music: Reha Omayer, HamburgFind us on:Facebook: AmerikaUebersetztTwitter: @AUbersetztContact us:amerikauebersetzt@gmail.com
Text us your questions! This is a re-release of an episode from our second season when we spoke with philosopher C Thi Nguyen. We think it bears re-listening in our current moment.=====What happens when we seek simple answers in a complex world? Philosopher C Thi Nguyen takes us into the machinery of belief, understanding, and value formation, exploring how we navigate information landscapes designed to manipulate us.Thi introduces the concept of "moral outrage porn"—representations that give us the satisfaction of moral righteousness without requiring meaningful action. We discuss conspiracy theories and his notion of "the seduction of clarity"—the powerful feeling we get from explanations that seem to make everything simple. This feeling is particularly dangerous because we're limited beings who need mental shortcuts to navigate the world. We also tackle echo chambers and why perfectly rational people can end up in them. Thi distinguishes echo chambers (where we systematically distrust outside sources) from filter bubbles (where we simply aren't exposed to contrary views), explaining that people inside echo chambers often follow logical procedures based on who they've decided to trust. This challenges the dismissive assumption that those with radically different beliefs are simply stupid or lazy.Weaving through discussions of game design, social media metrics, and institutional incentives, Thi reveals how our values are increasingly captured by simplified scoring systems that reshape our priorities according to what can be easily measured. The result? We outsource our complex human values to technologies and institutions that weren't designed to handle them.Uncomfortable yet?Content note: this episode contains profanity.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. Why not “Do your own research” and finds their own “Alternative Facts” weather when the road is closed down? A BIG helping of not-good decision making, with a serving of wishful thinking to follow. Your medical history, on a four inch screen. Marci gets a craving.
Elon Musk, who clearly holds sway over the president, wants the US government privatize as much as possible. That includes the US Postal Service, Amtrak and more. Musk made the comments at a Morgan Stanley tech conference. It's not clear who would take over services currently managed by the government, but It could be a money making opportunity for the wealthy tech bros.We welcome Patrick Lovell to the show. After suffering personal losses in the 2008 Financial Crisis, Lovell created a TV Series called The Con and continues to fight for truth and justice.A mixture of court rulings are coming back. How do we measure racism? In such politically charged terrain, the need for objective data is clear.By some surveys, half of Brits don't believe that racism exists. Keon West, social psychologist and visiting professor at LSE, joins the podcast to discuss this phenomenon.Keon explains what data can tell us, and delves into the surprising ways that the UK compares to the US. He unpacks the ingenious studies that reveal how racism really works, and why he thinks the Sewell report commissioned by Boris Johnson was “deeply flawed”.He also talks about conducting experiments in a time of “alternative facts”, why we need to trust the science, instead of just relying on scientists, and how those on the left and right can improve discussions about racism.Plus, after Zelensky's “dressing down” at the White House, Ellen and Alona talk dress codes: banger or dud?Keon's book ‘The Science of Racism' is published by Pan Macmillan and is available here. Without credible explanations for the things that bewilder and exasperate us, people become susceptible to extremist conspiracy theories, hate and lies. So how does truth survive? In her brand new book, "Doppelgänger: A Trip into the Mirror World”, award-winning journalist Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, et al), describes being confused with Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, as Wolf morphed into a conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxer during the Covid pandemic. In an era of all important "personal brands", Klein became absorbed in the deep fake, double worlds surrounding and sometimes coming to represent her online. Right-wing conspiracies feed off Left-wing silences, she concludes. In this far-ranging interview from her home in British Columbia, Canada, Klein describes listening to hours and hours of conspiracist Steve Bannon's podcasts, and researching doppelgängers in history and literature, in order to uncover why we have shadow selves, and how disinformation and conspiracy theories gain power. Join Laura Flanders for this charming conversation as Naomi Klein challenges us to overcome divide-and-conquer individualism if we are ever to tackle our real-life, systemic crises. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.Guest: Naomi Klein: Journalist & Best-Selling Author, Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, This Changes Everything & On FireFull Episode Notes are located HERE. There are no such things as alternative facts. We can disagree about how to interpret facts, but there they remain. Stubborn things. When stubborn people collide with stubborn things – when the likes of Rupert Murdoch assembles a media empire largely designed to embrace and disseminate disinformation – you have the makings of a Crash Course episode. Murdoch, the 92-year-old progenitor of the Fox News miasma, recently retired from his perch atop Fox Corp. and News Corp. Fox is likely to define Murdoch's legacy – a legacy some of his former executives now reject. Three of them jointly noted in a recent public statement: "We never envisioned, and would not knowingly have enabled, the disinformation machine that, in our opinion, Fox has become.” For his part, Murdoch seems untroubled: “Bury your mistakes,” he likes to say. Celeste was initially dismayed that her vast experience as a reporter hadn't prepared her to sit in that host chair. As a host of a conversation, you have to care about creating a story arc; about the order of your questions; and about the way in which you ask your questions. None of those apply universally to reporting. A lot of what we think is true about good communication doesn't prove to be true. Celeste says her research shows that tactics like making eye contact, saying uh-huh, nodding your head, and even repeating back what you heard – aren't effective. It's sharing perspectives that actually creates a connection, an empathic bond.Learning to communicate well with one another could not be more important – because to communicate well is to survive. One thing that Celeste told me that took my breath away is that it is not true that the human species survived because of some innate higher intelligence. Rather, she said, “The way that we survived is through our communities. If you're messing with one human being, you are almost always messing with more.” To talk with those with whom you disagree, learn their arguments. You need to understand them as well as you know your own. Otherwise, they will dismiss your objection as coming from someone who simply doesn't understand. ***Follow Elaine on LinkedInHelp us find and celebrate today's best hosts! Susan Azar Porterfield reads her poem, "Alternative Facts" for MQR's Winter 2023 issue.
For New Year's, we're re-airing an episode from Season 1 in which we discuss the question "What is truth?" We think it's as timely now as it was when we first released it and probably deserves a bit more attention than it got then. We hope you enjoy re-listening or perhaps catching it for the first time. We'll be back on our regular schedule with new content on January 13.=====Truth is a tricky term these days, with everyone believing their own "facts" or having their own "truths" or "alternative facts." How does a philosopher see truth? What is a healthy pastoral way to approach and pursue truth? Is there such a thing as truth at all, let alone "absolute truth," as so many Christians attest? Our resident pastor and philosopher dive in and bring us into a really fun and healthy conversation about truth that our society would do well to engage. The whiskey we sample in this episode is Four Roses Small Batch Select from the always stellar Four Roses Bourbon. The beverage tasting is at 1:11. To skip to the main segment, go to 5:03.The article that Kyle quotes in the conversation about humility can be found here. The episode that is referenced that had not yet been aired at the time of this recording is S01E23: "A Philosopher and a Philosopher Ruin Your Theology: Interview with Nick Oschman." =====We need your help.If you value what we're doing and want us to continue, please consider supporting us through our 2022 end of year giving campaign. Happy Thanksgiving to our American Listeners!Join us this week as we discuss with our teacher Ryan Brown the concept of truth, facts, and the origin of thought. When Jesus is brought before the Roman local authority Pilot, he was asked 3 simple questions: "Are You the King of the Jews?", "What have you done?" and "What is truth?" That question "What is truth?" and Jesus' response will be the focus of our discussion. In a world of alternative facts, lies, and exploitation, the best you'll ever have is an approximation of truth. The only truth you can ever know is Jesus. We know Truth because we know Jesus.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RealBibleStoriesNotes: https://sermons.church/archives?church=PalmsBaptistBibleStudy&id=126Website: https://real-bible-stories.square.siteCheck us out on these Streaming Platforms: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1912582/share

There is no doubt that Jeffrey Dahmer -is considered by most- to be a monster?! Whatever your feelings, we question whether or not the world needs a new tv story in 2022. Today we discuss just that. We also discuss the inaccuracies of the true story and how the victim's family feels about reliving those horrific events. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebkspadezshow/message

Are 'facts' a tool for manipulation? Listen to find out!Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesFacts and reason are essential if we are to make progress and create a better world. At least that's how it used to be. But now it seems everyone has their own 'facts'. Our political leaders have 'alternative' facts, but so, it is also claimed, do the liberal elite and the mainstream media. Meanwhile, reason has been derided by many as a typically male bludgeon to deny alternative views. Should we welcome the challenge to facts and reason as a progressive move undermining the authority of traditional Western hierarchies? Or is the undermining of facts and reason a singularly dangerous exercise?Professor of Philosophy at the Open University Sophie-Grace Chappell, Professor of Philosophy at Stockholm University Anandi Hattiangadi and Professor of Philosophy at the New College of the Humanities Simon Blackburn dicuss the changing value of truth in contemporary society. This is a bonus TP&R episode of Faithful Politics with our good friends Josh Burtram and Will Wright when they interviewed Amanda Carpenter of The Bulwark. Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. Enter former-President Trump. Over the last four years, America has been under the influence of a person who seemingly graduated from Gaslighting University with a Ph.D. in Alternative Facts. Whether Trump knows it or not, he is masterful in the art of gaslighting-jitsu. The guest this week may know a thing or two about being gaslit, as she has been the target of this Trump tactic, Amanda Carpenter joins Will and Josh to discuss her book, Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies to Us. They also discuss the future of the Republican Party, and how faith played a key role in her life during one of the most heinous acts perpetrated by the Trump campaign during 2016 primaries. Amanda Carpenter is a political commentator for CNN and author of GASLIGHTING AMERICA: Why We Love It When Trump Lies To Us. Prior to CNN she was the Communications Director for Senator Ted Cruz and previously served as Senior Communications Advisor and Speechwriter to Sen. Jim DeMint. For both senators, Carpenter crafted countless op-eds, speeches, talking points, briefing papers, jokes, press releases, tweets, Facebook posts, and other materials on a range of subjects before the United States Senate, including but not limited to economics, campaigns, healthcare, foreign affairs, and constitutional matters. Her work for them has been published in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and other outlets. Roll Call featured her in a 2014 front-page profile, "Ted Cruz's Twitter Torrent: Outspoken GOP Aide Takes on Own Party" calling her "Capitol Hill's most-followed staffer" on Twitter with more than 56,000 followers. In 2013, she led the creation of Cruz's viral #MakeDCListen speech and campaign that pollster Frank Luntz said produced "the best political sound-byte of 2013.” In 2011, she was named by the Washington Post as one of the "Top 10 Capitol Hill Staffers to Watch." https://www.faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/ https://www.thebulwark.com/author/amanda-carpenter/ https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/gaslighting-america-amanda-carpenter/1126314531?ean=9780062748003

In this episode, I explain what it is like to teach college classes in a correctional facility. And I focus on one of my favorite academics and authors, bell hooks, who anchors our classroom discussions about feminism, an idea that many of us have totally misunderstood. I cover the "feminist waves," how media impacts our beliefs, and why many of us think feminism is something very different than what it is. Working as a prison educator is the most fulfilling job I have ever had. When we are thrown in prison and cut off from the world because (we are told) we are too dangerous and awful to play with everyone else, we internalize those feelings of hate and disdain, leading to a long-standing 66% recidivism rate in the USA. But when we are offered services, treatment and reasonable options for self-improvement, we often change our thinking without realizing it, and we begin projects of self improvement. Check out Yousman's work about media making us afraid. You can also read about Roy Cohn, political advisor for both Donald Trump & Joe McCarthy.
Lives of the Unconscious. A Podcast on Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
Conspiracy phantasma derive their power from affects, not from arguments. They cannot be understood by differentiating them from some supposedly reasonable normality – for normality may not be so reasonable after all – but only in the reflection of their affective cohesiveness. In fact, they are a social psychological phenomenon of extraordinary proportions: and a case for depth psychology. In this episode we will hear more about the role conspiracy theories can play for the psyche and why they cannot be easily abandoned.
