Success isn't just about how hard you work. It's also about who's advocating for you even when you're not in the room. In this episode, Debbie talks with Rosalind Chow, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, about her new book, The Doors You Can Open A New Way to Network, Build Trust, and Use Your Influence to Create a More Inclusive Workplace. They get into the real difference between mentorship and sponsorship, why both matter, and how having the right sponsor can completely change the game for your career. Rosalind shares her perspective on the challenges of systemic racism and inclusion and how being intentional about sponsorship can actually create real opportunities for people who need them. Concluding the interview, Debbie and Yael give their take on what it means to build relationships that open doors, not just for ourselves but for others, too. Listen and Learn: When systemic solutions fade, what can individuals do? How sponsorship, not mentorship, breaks barriers for marginalized professionals How power dynamics in mentorship can shape careers and why sponsorship may be the real key to success Rethinking networking and how shifting from power moves to collective problem-solving can build real influence Sponsorship vs. mentorship: why trust flows differently, and why sponsors take the biggest career risks Can sponsorship fight bias, or does it reinforce it? How Kristin became the unlikely leader of a program for Black professionals and won over skeptics How sponsoring a colleague led Kristin to a Harvard Business Review article and a career boost Resources: Rosalind's website: https://www.rosalindchow.com/ The Doors You Can Open: A New Way to Network, Build Trust, and Use Your Influence to Create a More Inclusive Workplace: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781541702752 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rosalind-chow-6b25541b0/ About Rosalind Chow Rosalind Chow is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory at Carnegie Mellon University, where she studies the power of social hierarchy and its impact on diversity and inclusion efforts within organizations. She uses her research expertise to direct executive leadership programs aimed at accelerating participants' careers, with a particular focus on the advancement of women and members of marginalized groups. Her forthcoming book, The Doors You Can Open (PublicAffairs, April 8, 2025), introduces the concept of sponsorship as a way we can use our social connections to change the relationships we have with other people and the relationships that other people have with one another in the service of creating greater communal good. Let's chat about the Pinterest Marketing Plan Framework. You have heard all of the big marketing terms before (ideal customer, SEO, quality content, even CTA) - what you may not know is how to apply them to Pinterest. The first thing we need to note is that Pinterest is a visual search engine, similar to the LTKW-based search engine of Google and the audio-based version of YouTube. Pinterest is not a social media platform, and that is good news for you! It means that your content can be seen for years to come (evergreen), when done right, versus the short, hours-long life span of a social media post. Let's get into how to use Pinterest to market our brand, gain awareness for our content, and ultimately increase sales. Pinterest helps you tell a visual story about your brand It's a visual search engine and arguably the favorite of teachers, creative marketers, educational sellers, artists, and creatives Pins are evergreen- which means they keep circulating day after day, year after year Links Mentioned in this Episode about Pinterest Marketing: Start or Expand Your Teacher Business in 2025 CEO Teacher Pinterest CEO Teacher® Resources Worth Their Weight in Gold You're already a wealth of knowledge! Saturday's matinee in Raleigh may not have been the most aesthetically pleasing contests, but it was a rivalry game that showcased tons of intensity if nothing else. Jalen Washington played one of his best games in a Tar Heel uniform and blocked a running attempt to win the game by NC State in the waning seconds to give North Carolina a 63-61 win. 2009 National Champ Bobby Frasor joins Joey Powell to chop up the UNC victory. My guest today is Cristina Espinal. She was born in Venezuela, lived in the US and Asia, made the UK her home, and joined me from Madrid today. After a successful first career, she decided to pivot, follow, and trust her curiosity. She helps ambitious mid-career professionals gain the clarity and confidence to secure bigger, more aligned roles and turn their uniqueness into a side business. Her Play Big newsletter is a fascinating read—all links are in the notes below. She has a great passion for the work she does and shares many inspiring stories. I learned a lot and enjoyed this discussion very much—I trust you will, too. My dear friend Matt Zeigler had something to do with connecting us—thank you, Matt. You are one of Talking Billions' patron saints, but you know it already. If you are not following Matt, you should—look up his Cultish Creative blog, Just Press Record, and the Intentional Investor Podcast—both are phenomenal, and I'm not just saying that—I read, watch, and listen to all three. Please help me welcome Cristina Espinal! Takeaways: Self-reflection and understanding our stories and beliefs are crucial for personal growth. There are multiple paths to making a difference, and it's important to define success on your own terms. Playing big means uncovering who you are and challenging the default path. Expanders, people who inspire, challenge, support, and are vulnerable, can help us grow and achieve our goals. Stress addiction is a societal issue that keeps individuals in a constant state of chronic stress. Defining success based on personal values and having an inner scorecard leads to fulfillment. Rejection can be seen as a redirection towards a more aligned path. Rejection can lead to new opportunities and a more aligned path. Confidence is a skill that can be developed through taking small steps outside of one's comfort zone. Trust is built through vulnerability and the willingness to make oneself important to someone else. Asking better questions involves being present, leading with curiosity and compassion, and considering the context. Infinite games are those that bring joy and fulfillment, and they should be prioritized in life. https://playbig.beehiiv.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/cristinaespinal/ https://www.linkedin.com/posts/cristinaespinal_in-june-2020-my-career-hit-a-wall-i-was-activity-7171852818574745600-RqCG Podcast Program – Disclosure Statement Blue Infinitas Capital, LLC is a registered investment adviser and the opinions expressed by the Firm's employees and podcast guests on this show are their own and do not reflect the opinions of Blue Infinitas Capital, LLC. Welcome back to the Heads Together podcast. This week, I'm talking about what it really means to "play big" and be unapologetic. Spoiler alert: It's not about how big your dreams are, but how fulfilled you feel while chasing them. Whether you're aiming to run a mega-corporation or raise alpacas in the countryside, it's all about owning what you truly want. Get ready for an inspiring episode that challenges the go big or go home mentality and champions authentic, unapologetic living. Playing big isn't about the size of your dreams but the fulfillment they bring you. It's about pursuing what truly makes you happy, whether that's a bustling business or a serene lifestyle. Claim what you want unapologetically, even if it doesn't fit the mainstream narrative of success. Your dreams are valid, no matter their shape or size. Stop comparing your journey to others. Focus on your vision and what success means to you. Remember, everyone's path looks different. I loved hearing from those who connected with me on LinkedIn after the last episode. It was joyful receiving your messages and knowing you're out there listening. It's moments like these that make everything worthwhile. Have a fantastic week, and see you next time!

On this Episode In this episode you'll hear a conversation with sports psychologist, Dr. Tom Hanson. While Tom has worked with some of the biggest names in professional baseball, he is also a prolific author, coach, and sought after speaker in the corporate world. Today, we'll explore what it takes to be a top performer in any field of endeavor. We'll discuss mental toughness, performance inhibitors and so much more. This is a great episode for anyone who wants to elevate their performance. What You'll Learn What is “commitment management” and how can we benefit from it? How do we leverage the “double-header of life” concept? What we can learn from the best hitters in baseball history What does it mean to “play big” in life? How can we improve our mental mechanics? What is the “tapping method” and how does it work? About my Guest Dr. Tom Hanson frees athletes and coaches, executives and work teams to consistently perform at or near their best. His Performance Freedom and Confidence and Consistency coaching programs in both sport and business train people to “Excel, Enjoy, and Evolve.” Formerly the Director of Performance Enhancement for the New York Yankees, Dr. Hanson also consulted with the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, and Minnesota Twins organizations. He helps individuals and teams in all sports and regularly coaches in major university athletic programs such as Harvard University Baseball and Florida State Softball. His business client list ranges from giants like Microsoft, Verizon and Pepperidge Farm to small businesses like Public Trust Advisors and insurance adjusters Johns Eastern. He co-authored both Heads-Up Baseball: Playing the Game One Pitch at a Time and Heads-Up Baseball 2.0: 5 Skills for Competing One Pitch at a Time with Dr. Ken Ravizza. The books have combined to sell over 200,000 copies, been adopted by many major college and professional teams, used as a college textbook, and been called “the bible for developing mental toughness,” by Collegiate Baseball. Dr. Hanson also wrote the award-winning PLAY BIG: Mental Toughness Skills that Take Baseball Players to the Next Level, and the best-selling business fable, Who Will Do What by When? -- How to Improve Performance, Accountability and Trust with Integrity, which has sold over 30,000 copies to individuals and organizations, including the United States Government. The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
In a world where wealth is often measured in material terms, Dr. Lara Salyer invites us to consider a deeper, more personal definition in this episode of The Catalyst Podcast. Sparked by a TikTok video that reminisces about childhood indicators of wealth, Dr. Salyer urges us to reflect on perceptions that may have shaped our understanding of wealth. She suggests that just as we periodically reassess our health, our ingrained beliefs about money and success might also require a fresh perspective! Wealth, as Dr. Salyer presents it, is a multifaceted concept. She shares her own experiences of finding richness in life's simple joys, like the comfort of her own space and the liberty to align her medical practice with her personal ethos. Because money mindset is so important, within Dr. Salyer's mentorship, The Catalyst Studio, Financial Fridays are dedicated to supporting functional and holistic practitioners to challenge, explore and be aware of their money stories. To inspire a reimagined approach to wealth, Dr. Salyer regularly recommends transformative reads, including "Happy Money" by Ken Honda, “Happy Pocket Full Of Money” by David Caperon Gikandi, and “Playing Big” by Tara Mohr. In closing, Dr. Salyer invites a shift in focus from financial accumulation to nurturing well-being and self-expression, personal fulfillment and joy. Quotes: • “A quote that really resonated with me is ‘Some people are so poor that all they have is money.” (4:14 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Wealth has become blown out of proportion and this is why I was diligent in making sure we had financial Fridays inside my mentorship, the Catalyst Studio. And my favorite thing is these “Financial Fridays” now where we unpack the idea of wealth and all the behavior around it. Are you hoarding it? Do you have a scarcity mindset? Do you spend it as soon as you get it because you're not sure when you'll get more? And there's all these things to unpack. And this is wonderful.” (5:17 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Wealth isn't just about money or financial need. It's also about how your energy is spent. How your energy is curated again and recharged.” (10:21 | Dr. Lara Salyer) Links Happy Money by Ken Honda: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MJHJ57T?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_QFR6QY5ZAXP2NXTHCFMR Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1571747362?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_HK64JTF2PDMT2QHF9MCS Playing Big by Tara Mohr: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Big-Practical-Wisdom-Create/dp/1592409601 Connect with Lara: Mentorship: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Archetype Quiz: https://3nb09zv7070.typeform.com/archetype Website: https://drlarasalyer.com The Catalyst Way: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
This is a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite which is a short episode which may be a bit more about a topic we've covered like our episode today or a quick inspiration. This episode builds on Tara Mohr's book, Playing Big, which we covered in our previous episode. Here are 3 takeaways from today's episode: 1. As women transition from student mode to career they need the ability to improvise, challenge authority, trust they already know and make their work visible. 2. Knowing your personal brand can help us know our value and build our confidence. 3. Probably the hardest thing for us in Playing Big, is making our work known and building awareness of it. We can practice doing this and if you need someone to share your successes with, I'm here. Just email me and I'll hold the space for you. We'll be covering the first couple chapters about our inner critic and voice of our inner wisdom which she calls our inner mentor. Here are 3 takeaways from today's episode: 1. Everyone has an inner critic and it can hold us back from playing big. 2. Naming and becoming aware of that critic is Step One in playing big. 3. Having a relationship with our inner critic is a lifelong journey but as we make peace with that part of us, our intuitive self or inner mentor, can immerge which can help and comfort us on that journey! What do you want to see when thinking back on your life from your deathbed? In this episode, Jeff and Rob discuss: Rob's unique childhood and family situation and what he learned from it. Finding the balance in positivity. How Rob found his career in marketing, got involved in non-profit organizations, and began STS Capital. Why you need to stop playing small and start seeing the abundance and thinking BIG. Key Takeaways: Be willing to learn from others who have more experience than you. No matter what you know, someone else knows more. But don't let them tell you you cannot achieve your dreams. If you see something wrong, don't be afraid to speak up and call attention to the problems. If you have solutions to those problems, bring them too. What you learn when running your business, is only going to help you in your philanthropic giving. Creating money and gathering stuff for yourself is not going to take you very far. You can't take it with you when you go - what are you going to do with the money you've earned? Start to recognize when you are playing small and when you're only playing not to lose, not to win. "Be your big self. Believe in the dreams that you're inspired to envision. And don't let anybody tell you you can't. Anybody that tells you you can't is not worth listening to. It's time for you to step up, be your biggest self, and make this world a better place in the best way that you possibly can." — Rob Follows About Rob Follows - Founder and Chairman:Rob's purpose and passion is to help entrepreneurial business owners achieve maximum value when the right time comes to sell.
