Rosie is one of my dearest friends and teachers. She writes life changing books, creates beautiful pieces of art and tells a damn good story.  Rosie is the creator of the Summer of Intentionality and her lessons in using her time intentionally has helped me prioritize what is most important and let go of what isn't a fit now (or ever) all without guilt. In this episode Rosie offers her 6 step framework for deciding if something is worthy of your calendar at this stage in your life. I would love for you to listen to this interview with Rosie. She is a delightful human and I am sure you'll walk away with some wisdom you didn't even know you needed. You can find all the episodes and show notes at www.tamihackbarth.com/podcast. I am so happy to be heading into the summer season to make some memories, finish some projects, read a lot and spend time with my family. Around here we call this season the Summer of Intentionality. I learned about it from my pal Rosie Molinary.  Rosie met a boy at a college party who could recite long poems from memory. She was impressed and asked him how he was able to do it. His answer is what became the SOI.  I tell more of the story on this week's podcast along with things that are saving my life this season.

Learning to accept, support, and belong to ourselves first can seem like a never-ending battle for adults, and the pressure our adolescent kids are facing around these topics feels even greater. But I believe this kind of support and care of our own selves is one of the answers to creating more peace inside our lives and the world. I think we can all agree this is what is desperately needed right now. Today's guest, Author, Activist, and Dove Self-Esteem Project Educator, Rosie Molinary, and I dive into these topics and so much more. Take a look at today's talking points [9:10] Rosie's "lightbulb moment" Looking back with perspective and kindness [11:00] The consequences of looking outside yourself for validation Roller coaster ride of other people's perceptions Putting people into boxes [20:30] How purpose leads to healing Having a healthy relationship with yourself helps you be in touch with your purpose and that's what the world needs [23:11] Our kids don't need us to be perfect in order to be good role models Have honest, unpolished conversations with your kids Be aware of what you say about yourself in front of your children [29:40] Gently setting boundaries around non-negotiable "you time" Rosie's advice on how to come back to yourself Knowing what your signs of burnout and overwhelm are and what to do about it Creating an intervention tool kit for you and your middle schooler [41:50] The impact of gender expression on body image Beliefs about ourselves lead to certain behaviors that show up for girls AND boys The fundamental desire to belong isn't gender binary Parents, if you or your adolescent have ever struggled to accept yourself, your body, or to prioritize your own needs first - this is for YOU. ~Listen in now to repair your breakdown and replenish yourselves~ People, places, and things mentioned in the episode: Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self-Acceptance by Rosie Molinary Check out more of what Rosie is up to on her website 2 Free Giveaways: #1: a personalized pep talk for you or your adolescent, #2: YOU BELONG poster you can easily print for you or your kid's personal space PS. Oh, middle school. That dreaded time of adolescence when awkward is the side dish served with every entree. **RECORD SCRATCH** Hold up. What if we looked it again? Reconsidered the potential these precious years hold, rather than just grin (or grimace) and bear it? Yes, these years can be hard, but there’s so much more that’s worth exploring.    In this episode, I talk with my friend Michelle Icard, author of several books on middle school parenting, including her most recent, “14 Talks by Age 14.”    Listen, Michelle doesn’t call herself the “Middle School Maven,” but I think it’s a perfect fit. She’s SO in tune with this stage of development, the importance of letting kids “earn their own wisdom,” and why as parents we should be tuning in (strategically) right as our kids want to completely tune us out.    Please listen if you have middle schoolers. Listen if you will have middle schoolers or already had them. And send this to your friends who are navigating these sometimes rocky years so they know there are resources out there to help.    You can listen on my website, iTunes or Spotify!    Michelle’s unsolicited lift is her friend and author Rosie Molinary,  who recently published the second edition of her book, “Beautiful You, A Daily Guide to Self-Acceptance.” Go check her out!

Book Report - Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self-Acceptance by Rosie Molinary. Why am I interested in the topic of this book? Self-acceptance is one of my core values. The more I know, love, and accept who I am at my core, the easier and more peaceful my life becomes. Knowing this about myself and knowing and looking up to the author made this a must read for me. How much did I already know about the book before I started it? Interesting story. I met Rosie online almost a decade ago - we were both part of groups of women talking about body acceptance and yoga, and we are both adoptive moms. Rosie weaves in her life philosophy and story in tiny snapshots throughout the 365 daily prompts. She offers information, inspiration, and specific tools to learn more about yourself and find ways to live the best version of you based on love and acceptance. What would I tell a friend about this book? I love this book and pretty much tell anyone who will listen to get a copy and start their Beautiful You journal today. Did the author set it up so it is easy to understand? The daily prompts are meant to be done in a few minutes and create a whole picture for self-acceptance over time. Specifically, what did you love about the book? I love how easy it is to incorporate these daily prompts into your routine. Read it in the morning, think about it during the day and jot your thoughts in a journal before bed. But honestly, my favorite thing about this book (and Rosie) is the unwavering positive regard. It is simply understood that you are good enough as you are and loved just the way you are right now. Who will enjoy reading this book and why?  Women who love to journal will love this book - so many thoughtful prompts. Mothers of daughters will love this book as a guide to help their daughters struggle less than we did. Women who love deep conversations and looking into life’s bigger questions will love this book. Women who want to get off the rollercoaster of looking for acceptance outside themselves will love this book. Book clubs with a personal development slant will love this book. I hope YOU love this book.  Show notes: http://tamihackbarth.com/episode10/

April 11, 2016 “Our responsibility is not to match the standard of beauty that we’re given in the advertising world. Our responsibility is to feel well enough so we can go out and do what’s purposeful and passionate for us.” -Rosie Molinary I think of PCOS Diva and the work that I do as helping women move beyond the pain, struggle and symptoms of PCOS so that they, in turn, can live the life they were meant to live and shine their light without PCOS holding them back. Self-acceptance is a really important piece of that. I often recommend Rosie Molinary’s book, Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self-Acceptance to my clients, family and friends. Rosie’s message of radical self-acceptance is powerful and potentially life changing. Listen in as we discuss: How to build a positive, healthy relationship with ourselves Recognizing that your worthiness is your birthright The body warrior pledge Defining your own beautiful.

When Rosie Molinary was looking in the mirror at her frizzy, unruly hair in the dead of summer and freaking out over what product would 'tame the mane,' she had an epiphany: 'I have bought into the beauty myth of what society says I should look like.' She told herself, 'I'm going to work with boys in an alternative school. Not one of them will care about the texture of my hair, but they will care about how I will make them feel. Who am I trying to get approval from?' And she set down her straightener and walked out the door as her natural, beautiful self... already good enough. Rosie is the champion of 'radical self-acceptance' -- the belief that you are worthy enough just for being born and the idea that you don't have to do ANYTHING to prove your worth. Radical self-acceptance is the choice to not have an adversarial relationship with yourself. Instead, you choose to accept your own humanity in the same way you accept the humanity of others. Tune in as we discuss how to practice radical self-acceptance using examples from Rosie's life, including her experience growing up with brown skin in a predominantly white neighborhood, what really surprised her when she wrote her first book Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina (Seal Press), and how she handles difficult questions from people, like her adoption of a boy from Ethiopia. Rosie believes 'we can teach people who aren't in the same place as us a better way to use language for the future.' Her book Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance (Seal Press), is an ideal tool to walk yourself through daily practices of self-acceptance, sure to induce 'spiral ups' and more self-compassion in your Body Kindness journey. --- About Rosie As a radical self-acceptance champion, Rosie Molinary uses profound questions and wholehearted connection to empower people to treat themselves well so they can connect with their talents and passions to authentically and intentionally live their purpose and help heal the world. The author of Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance (Seal Press) and Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina (Seal Press), Rosie teaches at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, serves as a national Dove Self-Esteem Project educator, offers workshops and retreats, and speaks on self-acceptance, body image, self-care, media literacy, the Latina experience, and intentional living around the country. Rosie also serves as a creative catalyst to companies and brands that wish to provide a synergistic, empowered and soulful experience to their clients and employees as they serve the world through workshop and retreat facilitation and consultation. A committed activist, Rosie helped found HAMMERS, a non-profit initiative to provide emergency home repair for low income families in her community, and Circle de Luz, a non-profit that radically empowers young Latinas by supporting their transformation through extensive mentoring, holistic programming and scholarship funds for further education. Do you struggle with body image? Are you trying to find body peace, and to let go of body expectations? Listen now for some experiments to get through this part of the food peace journey. Details here and remember the super secret discount code BOSS for 10% off. Episode's Key Points: Making peace with food comes down to accepting ourselves! This includes accepting our needs and accepting the space we take up in the world. Our bodies are NOT meant to be controlled!! They will change constantly as we get older. Rosie Molinary joins to talk about body image! We ALL have something unique to offer the world. So much of our pain is related to our lack of awareness around our own self-worth. We are all fighting for our worth! Remember, our worth isn't rooted in our appearance. So how do we find our worthiness outside of our earth suit? We must remind ourselves that we are worthy simply by EXISTING! We pour energy and money into how we physically look in order to feel accepted... but this removes resources from experiences in our lives that might have the potential to EMPOWER us instead of disempower us. Diet culture and the beauty ideal PROFIT off of our insecurities. Self-acceptance is a journey!! All experiences are moments of information, rather than moments for judgment. Get curious! Unpack the internalized messages we have been taught about appearance and self-worth. We have to accept that our bodies ALWAYS change... so we can't attach our worth to one stagnant version of our bodies, because that will always be in flux. Imperfect cannot exist if there's no "perfect" in the first place... resist messaging around "effortless" perfection! The images we see of our world in the media are NOT REAL! We have to anchor our faith and belief in ourselves to how we FEEL, rather than how we look. Shaming ourselves NEVER works! It's actually very damaging, and it's not health promoting... we have to operate from a place of self-acceptance instead. Remember, self-acceptance doesn't mean that you don't want to grow in some way. But it does assert your worthiness RIGHT NOW, no matter what growth you achieve down the line. We're the experts of our own bodies! Self-acceptance is a super ACTIVE process. How do we give ourselves what we need every single day? Episode's Key Points: Around age five or six, all children go through "Adiposity Rebound." This usually means that developmentally, children will gain weight to prepare for growth in the next few years. Our bodies as kids change so drastically all the time! We live in a fat phobic society!! It's a disgusting reality, but we live in a culture that is not accepting of larger bodies. If an adolescent in your life comes to you and says they want to lose weight, go on a diet, or start an exercise regimen, DO NOT offer to go on it with them! This sends the message that their body needs fixing. Instead, let them know that you will love them no matter what, unconditionally. Every BINGE starts with RESTRICTION!! There are so many people who understand this struggle, feel shame around their eating behaviors, and experience the tug of war of bingeing and restricting. Stop the food fight and take a rest! Dieting and restriction are the SAME THINGS!! The more we restrict and the more we sit in shame, the more we binge. There is a function of binge eating disorder! Bingeing can help us to disconnect from discomfort. Recovery from binge eating disorder takes, on average, six to seven years. Do so with the help of an eating disorder dietitian and a whole team of experts! Eating disorders are complicated because they include elements of mental health along with cultural issues of size acceptance. We live in a world that hasn't recovered from its own eating disorder yet!! Counseling and therapy are KEY elements to recovery! Work with a counselor and a dietitian together to help you along your journey and speed up your recovery process. You're worth recovery!! Shame is a HUGE weight on our shoulders... remove it with the help of professionals! You CAN find balance and food peace!! Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter.
