Think of all the things we give power to define us. Our last name. The accidents of our birth. The community to which we choose to belong. What we do for a living. The Christian story says that, in Christ, and through the gospel, God is calling you to a new identity. It comes with a new name. A new birth. A new community. And a new vocation. This is who you are called to be. This is who you really are.The sermon today is titled "Calling." It is the fourth installment in our "Identity" Series. When we sense no purpose, we create purpose. We have to. It's how we are wired. Without purpose, without meaning, without a sense that we are wanted and our contribution is meaningful, we die. But we know all to well that self-created purpose lasts as long as we find interest in it, and it is only as solid as your imagination allows. What we long for, what we sense deep in our bones, what we want to be true even when nothing on earth tells us its true, is that there is something for which we were intended; there is someone for whom we were no accident. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
You are not an accident. You did not happen by chance.Sadly, many of us believe these heartbreaking lies. The truth is: God was involved in every aspect of your creation. He knew you - and loved you - before you were even born.We need to reframe our thinking about ourselves. When we understand whom God created us to be – and when we start to grasp his love and grace – then we can live the life God is inviting us to. One that is abundant, full, and even restful. In this podcast, James Bryan Smith and I discuss how understanding the good and beautiful you we've been created to be leads to flourishing. James Bryan Smith is the author of the Good and Beautiful Series, which includes: The Good and Beautiful God, The Good and Beautiful Life, The Good and Beautiful Community, and now his new book, The Good and Beautiful You: Discovering the Person Jesus Created You to Be. He is a theology professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and is the director of the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation.James is also an ordained minister with the United Methodist Church and has served in various capacities in local churches. And he hosts the Things Above Podcast. Great News! You can get 30% off and free shipping on the entire Good and Beautiful series – including The Good and Beautiful You - at the link below with the code MUCHMORE until February 2, 20023https://www.ivpress.com/the-good-and-beautiful-you Some highlights from our conversation:James Bryan Smith previously thought “The Good and Beautiful” series was complete until a friend suggested he needed one more book. Hear how this happened and why James agreed with his friend.James ends each chapter with a soul-training practice. The first one is called Holy Leisure. James and I discuss why he placed this practice first and why it's a foundational practice for the concepts he unpacks in the book.We discuss the false narrative that we are an accident. James tells us what the true and biblical narrative is and why this matters so much when we are seeking to live restful lives.James says, “It's unavoidable and not a sin to want to be wanted, to love to be loved, and to desire to be desired.” We talk about this truth, why it's not narcissistic, and how these deep longings are met through our Triune God.We talk about one of my favorite subjects – the finality of the cross. James unpacks this wonderful truth for us and helps us let go of the false thinking that we must confess each and every one of our sins to be forgiven. If this is a new concept to you – listen to it multiple times. This will give you deep and lasting freedom – and that freedom will release you from much of the anxiety you might feel in your relationship with the Lord. Here's how you can connect with James Bryan Smith and listen to his podcast:Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Official.JamesBryanSmithTwitter: https://twitter.com/jamesbryansmithPodcast: https://apprenticeinstitute.org/things-above-podcast/

God designed every detail about you – from the color of your hair to the texture of your toenails. He knows if cilantro tastes like soap or not.And if you recharge best when you're alone or at a party. Sometimes we wonder if God made a mistake when he wove together our DNA. Psalm 139 assures us he didn't. God not only created you and knows you, but he also deeply loves you.Perhaps you need to be reminded of this truth. Take a few minutes to meditate on Psalm 139:1-6 and contemplate how God created you and watches over you. As you let the Spirit guide you, you may be surprised what he has for you in this passage. We are meditating on Psalm 139 using the Lectio Divina method – a simple way to prayerfully hear God's Word. “There's only one answer to the question, “What is God like?” It's Jesus." - Dr. James Bryan SmithThe Christian faith is not only about belief and practices but also about the kind of people we become. Yet some of the most significant barriers to our transformation come from our toxic self-narratives. These narratives shape the way we see ourselves and the way we interact in the world. God designed us with a deep longing to be wanted, loved, alive, and connected to Him. Healing our souls requires more than knowing what God thinks about us. Our healing comes not through reason alone but through revelation. This short paragraph was an excerpt from James Bryan Smith's brand new book, The Good and Beautiful You. Enter to win The Good & Beautiful Series through Dec. 10th, 2022 James Bryan Smith and Amber discuss how his friendship with Dallas Willard and Rich Mullins shaped his spiritual life. Then, they dive in to The Good and Beautiful series which encourages the follower of Jesus to live out the Gospel change in our daily lives by understanding who God is, what it means to live in the kingdom of God on earth, as an individual and in community, and who Jesus created you to be. Questions Discussed During The Good & Beautiful Life: Your spiritual journey has been influenced greatly by personal friendships with people like Dallas Willard, Richard Foster and Rich Mullins. Share a bit of your faith journey and how these men helped shape your walk with Jesus. When you think about the Kingdom of Heaven, how would you describe it? Like many, God has used Willard's teachings in a powerful way in both my husband and his best friend Josh's lives. One of the questions Josh suggested I ask of you is, "What is your most cherished Dallas Willard memory?" You've written many books, but let's focus on The Good and Beautiful series, starting with The Good and Beautiful God. You begin with "the path to spiritual transformation begins with what we think about God." What are some common false thoughts we have about God and what are truths about God that we see Jesus reveal? In The Good and Beautiful Life you lay out these false notions of happiness and success that we've bought into by replacing them with Jesus' narratives about life in the kingdom of God. Will you flesh that out a bit for us? In The Good and Beautiful Community you focus on bringing spiritual formation and community engagement together. What are some spiritual practices that can help us avoid compartmentalizing our life with Jesus and our social justice efforts? Another question from Josh (along those same lines), How does being virtuous translate to more than "just being nice" or "calm and peaceful"? And you end the series with The Good and Beautiful You addressing toxic self narratives that hinder our life with Christ. What are some of the toxic narratives you spoke over yourself and how did those come into view as you wrote this book? Let's close with a few more questions from my husband's best friend Josh :) What advice would you give to a young parent who wants to lead their children in the way of Christ? What advice do you have for pastors or spiritual leaders who are facing burnout? Show Notes cont. Today we begin a series that I believe will encourage us to see ourselves more as God sees us. We will be reading excerpts from "The Good and Beautiful You" by James Bryan Smith. The following quote from Smith gives an overview of the subject of this episode: "Seeing our bodies- our good and beautiful bodies- as sacred instruments is essential if we are to live a vibrant life and have wellness in our embodied soul."
In this episode, James Bryan Smith is interviewed by his friend Dr. Jeff Bjorck to ask James questions about his latest book, “The Good and Beautiful You.” Dr. Bjorck is a licensed psychiatrist and a lifelong friend of James. With a toxic view of God, James says “spiritual formation not only won't help you, they might make you worse, you might turn them into legalism.” With a right view of God, “the disciplines take on a new understanding. Stephanie welcomes spiritual director, university professor and author James Bryan Smith to ponder the weight of God's love for us as His chosen creation. In his latest book, "The good and beautiful you" Jim invites us to peel back the layers of many lies we have commonly been fed in the church--about our worthlessness and predicament when our identity is primarily defined as "sinner." Jim likes to remind everyone - inlcuding himself - that Genesis 1 and 2 precede Genesis 3, and that grace and love precede sin and the fall! They discuss the difference between soul and self, and why the soul has such demanding needs. James tells us now the needs of our soul can be met in Christ alone. Jim describes ten things our soul cannot endure, and ten God-created longings. He says, "the soul is made to soar in trasncendance." Yet this is the furthest thing from self-help and narcissism! He invites us to "put to death our need ot establish our worth through what we accomplish." Who does not need to hear this in our generation of ever-hurried people? He talks of the sacredness of our God-bestowed body: "we cannot engage in a relationship with God apart from our bodies." Jim also talks about our deep-seated need to be wanted and desired. He says, "our identity is given by God - and it will find us! We don't have to search for significance; in Christ significance has found us." He prays and invites us to join him in asking the Lord, "O God help me believe the truth about myself, no matter how beautiful." Again, this is the furthest thing from narcissisim because it invites us to then consider every one around us in the same light - considering others as more important than ourselves, imitating Christ Jesus as Paul challenges us in Philippians 2. Jim says, "I am my own worst critic. I live under the tyranny of the ideal self." Anyone else can use a dose of truth against self-criticism? If God does not spend His days thinking negative thoughts about us, then why should we think those thoughts about ourselves - or others? Join Stephanie and James Bryan Smith for a profound and uplifting conversation about WHO YOU ARE IN GOD'S EYES. The Christian faith is not only about belief and practices, it is also about the kind of people that we become. Yet some of the biggest barriers to our transformation come from our toxic self-narratives. These narratives shape the way we see ourselves and the way we interact in the world. God designed us with a deep longing in our souls to be wanted, loved, alive, and connected to God. Healing our souls requires more than knowing what God thinks about us. Our healing comes not through reason alone, but through revelation. "The best practice I have seen in Christian spiritual formation" was Dallas Willard's endorsement of the Good and Beautiful series a decade ago. Now this fourth book in the series, The Good and Beautiful You, addresses the self-narratives that hinder spiritual growth and the desires of the soul that only God can satisfy. James Bryan Smith reminds us how Scripture reveals the beauty and goodness of our own souls and how we long for healing that only God can provide. Complete with spiritual practices that help us live into that reality, The Good and Beautiful You will serve as a welcome companion on your journey to discover who you truly are in Christ. The Good and Beautiful Series includes four essential discipleship books from James Bryan Smith.
