Today, it's another installment in Midday's series of Conversations with the Candidates: 2022. Tom's guest for the hour is Peter Franchot. He was first elected to the General Assembly in 1986. He represented part of Montgomery County in the House of Delegates for 20 years. In 2006, he was elected Comptroller of MD. In 2018, he won the race for his fourth term in that office by the largest margin of any statewide candidate in MD history. He has decided not to stand for election to a fifth term as Comptroller. Instead, he's running in the Democratic primary for Governor. Mr. Franchot has often been at odds with Democratic leaders during his 35 years in Annapolis. He opposed slot machines when legislation to legalize them was introduced in 2008. He joined Gov. Larry Hogan and then Treasurer Nancy Copp to end the contract to develop the State center complex in Baltimore. And in 2019, in a dispute with Democratic leaders, the legislature stripped the Comptroller's office of some of its regulatory role over alcohol and tobacco. Mr. Franchot is one of 10 contenders in Maryland's gubernatorial primary, and internal polls from his campaign and the campaign of Rushern Baker show him in the lead, with 71 days left until early voting begins. Before entering elective politics, Mr. Franchot served in the Army during the Vietnam War, and later worked for Ralph Nader, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and as a staff director for then-Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts. Peter Franchot is 74 years old. He holds a bachelor's degree from Amherst College and a law degree from Northeastern University. He and his wife, Anne Maher, are the parents of two grown children, and three grandchildren. They are longtime residents of Takoma Park. Mr. Franchot has chosen former Prince George's County Councilwoman Monique Anderson-Walker as his running mate for Lt. Governor. Peter Franchot joins us today on Zoom from Takoma Park. Today, we continue our 2022 series of Conversations with the Candidates. Between now and the primary in June, we'll be talking to candidates vying for their party's nominations for some of MD's most high-profile offices. Tom's guest today is Rushern Baker, III, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Maryland Governor. Mr. Baker entered politics in 1994, serving in the Maryland House of Delegates until 2003. He lost his first two elections for Prince George's County Executive, but he succeeded the two-term incumbent Jack Johnson in 2010. Soon after that election, federal prosecutors arrested Johnson on corruption charges. Mr. Baker was widely credited with improving the county's image and ending its “pay to play” legacy. Rushern Baker is 63 years old. He holds a Bachelor's degree and a law degree from Howard University. He was married for more than 30 years to Christa Beverly, a civil rights lawyer who passed away in 2021 after a long struggle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Baker was her primary caregiver. They are the parents of three grown children. Mr. Baker has chosen as his running mate Nancy Navarro, a three-term Montgomery County Council member. Rushern Baker joins us on Zoom. You're welcome to join us as well. Call us at 410.662.8780. Early voting in the MD Primary begins tomorrow. Marylanders can vote early, at locations around the state, for a week, until June 21st. Then, there’s a four-day break in voting until Election Day, Tuesday, June 26th. A reminder that if you are not yet registered to vote, you can register and vote on the same day --but only if you vote early. You will not be able to register on Election Day. The last time Maryland held a primary election for important offices like Governor, County Executive, or State’s Attorney was in 2014. In the primaries that year, barely more than 24% of eligible Democrats participated in the election, and even fewer Republicans cast a vote in their primary. The turnout in the General election was also very low. Let’s hope that isn’t the case again this year. Today, in the wake of Democrat Valerie Ervin's decision to withdraw from the Maryland gubernatorial race and endorse primary candidate Rushern Baker for the job, we’ll look at how her move has changed the dynamics of the governor's race and impacted the Democrats' challenge this fall to Governor Larry Hogan, the popular Republican incumbent. And we'll look at some of the other big races across the region that will begin to be decided tomorrow.Joining Tom is a roundtable of three seasoned political reporters:Pamela Wood covers Baltimore County government and politics for the Baltimore Sun.William Zorzi is a reporter for Maryland Matters, an online news site covering the Maryland political scene. We begin the program with a conversation with WYPR's Baltimore County News reporter, John Lee, about the changing dynamics of the Governor's race. Tom’s guest is Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, III, who is a Democratic candidate for Governor. Rushern Baker is one of three candidates in the race who is not a political outsider, and now, the only one currently serving as a County Executive. Soon after that election, federal prosecutors arrested Johnson on corruption charges. Mr. Baker has been widely credited with improving the county’s image and ending its “pay to play” legacy. There will be nine candidates on the ballot, seven of whom are considered serious contenders. Rushern Baker is considered one of the leading candidates in this crowded field, although none of the Democratic candidates have yet to poll better than incumbent Republican Governor Larry Hogan at this County Executive Baker is 59 years old. He has been married for 31 years to Christa Beverly, a civil rights lawyer, who was diagnosed eight years ago with early-onset dementia. Mr. Baker is her primary caregiver.
