In this episode of Dark Overtones, Kurt seeks to explore the symbols that inspired this very podcast -- the runes and symbols embedded in Ari Aster's horror masterpiece, Midsommar. Throughout the film, Aster places runes of Elder Futhark at key points, from the barracks where the main characters sleep to the cliff from which the Harga elders leap to their deaths. It seems that these symbols may have deeper meaning in the plot of the movie and its characters. In this episode, Kurt speaks with expert rune reader Wayne Brekke, as well as one of his best friends (and tarot expert) Becca Fanali to explore that possibility. This episode also includes a special event -- an actual rune reading for one of my guests, to expand the meaning of the runes from our interpretation of Midsommar to my guest's life and history. The runes cast for this reading can be seen at this link. You can see all the Elder Futhark runes discussed in this episode here.Wayne Brekke is a Renaissance man in every sense of the word. A man of many talents, Wayne is an expert rune reader (mentored by Kaedrich Olsen), with a concerted knowledge on Elder Futhark and the interpretations of the runes within it. Wayne's rune work (and other work) can be found all over the place, including his podcast Rune Ways (available on Spotify, Apple, and anywhere you get podcasts) and his YouTube channel of the same name. Wayne is also an unapologetic decades-long RPG fan, evidenced by his fantastic website, Dungeon Crate.Rebecca Fanali is a licensed acupuncturist, expert in herbal medicine, and practitioner of different elements of witchcraft. Becca has a long history of interest in the metaphysical, leading her to perform tarot readings and nature-centered rituals and practices. Though not a fan of labels, Becca has an encyclopedic knowledge of issues related to witchcraft, with a particular interest in human connection to nature.Apologies for the few audio changes throughout the episode; they're due to changing devices. Don't worry, you don't lose any of that sweet forbidden knowledge related to Midsommar. All audio clips were taken from Midsommar itself, property of Square Peg Films, B-Reel Films, and A24 Films, all rights reserved.

Også prater vi endel om hvordan stand up gjør Helene til en bedre konsulent, om oppveksten som prestedatter og om hvor høyt vi elsker nerder.@heleneholtskog @mettemuskel

Brekke (rhymes with Becky) Wagoner's message with Sustainable Prepping is a little different than others and I'm so here for it! She's talking about preparing for a disaster or emergency, and just having a little extra to fall back on, to ease your mind in times of stress. In her own words, "With global climate change impacting our weather to be more intense more often, having an emergency preparedness plan isn't just for doomsday preppers. It's common sense and will allow you to be confident in the midst of a crisis." Of course for me, growing up in the Mormon church, preparedness is taught, so I get it, and a lot of older generations may as well, but her aim is the younger generations, to teach that calm in the midst of crisis to the next generation as well. In this episode, Jahed and Martin spoke with Dr. Jaya Klara Brekke, a researcher on the political economy of blockchains at Durham University and Chief Strategy Officer at Nymtech. Nymtech is reimagining a world where resilient digital platforms and ecosystems and individual privacy are not mutually exclusive. We connected with Dr. Brekke on a variety of topics including identity, security, control and power. Dr. Brekke's work is guided by both political economy and anthropology and she brings a discerning eye to both the potential and limits of blockchain applications. Show Notes: 1.) If you're asking yourself how can I help the people of Ukraine, Pleace Awaken is providing a path to the Golf Federation of Ukraine, which has been turned into a relief organization. John Mahaffey takes us back to his win at the 1986 Players Championship, coming from 4 back down the stretch to win over Larry Mize. We also hear about his run at the 1981 Masters, his experience playing in the 1979 Ryder Cup, and the books he's written, Hogan's Boy and a mystery novel titled, Shafted; both of which you can get on Amazon. Jim Gallagher Jr. starts off talking about his golf-centric family who was awarded the Jack Nicklaus Golf Family of the Year in 1990. Jim also talks about his college golf days at the University of Tennessee, being inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, his win at the 1993 Tour Championship when he set the course record at the Olympic Club with an opening round 63, the inspiring story behind his win at the 1995 St. Jude Classic promising a young leukemia patient that he was going to win it for her, and his experience playing in the 1993 Ryder Cup, beating Seve in the Sunday morning singles matches. Dustin Brekke is Director of Engineering and Eddie Drye is a Regional Sales Manager. They share the great new technology they have in their Cleveland Launcher XL driver and why it won Gold in this year's Golf Digest Hot List. We also talk about their new 5 & 7 fairway woods, the wedge groove enhancements that help us land the ball softly on the green, and how to determine which golf ball is the right one for our games.
