In episode #285, we welcome Head Coach of the Windsor Spitfires, Greg Walters, someone who has thrived on his ability to be consistent and has never had a losing season. He is currently in his first season with the Spitfires following a year suspension that involved an inappropriate altercation with another Owen Sound employee. In this episode, he shares what he learned from that experience and we believe it's something that all coaches can benefit from hearing. Following eight seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Sarnia Sting to begin his coaching journey, Walters took over the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Jr A league for eight seasons, guiding them to 295 wins, a league championship and earning himself both coach and executive of the year honors. He would then return to the OHL as a Head Coach in Oshawa and Owen Sound, before landing in Windsor following the aforementioned suspension. Listen as he shares what he learned from incident that led to his suspension and the work he's done to overcome it, why good defence starts with breaking out the puck, and creating a culture of quality and self-evaluation.

In episode #180 of the Glass and Out podcast, Chris Lazary Head Coach of the OHL's Saginaw Spirit, stops by. Lazary was named Saginaw Head Coach on November 18, 2018, after serving as an Associate Coach for over two seasons. He led the Spirit to back-to-back West Division Championships (2018-19, 2019-20) for the first time in team history, and in the process, his team put up a ton of goals. As you'll hear, Lazary is clearly passionate about providing his players a framework to play with the puck on their sticks, and creating space to get creative and make plays. Get your notepads out! He got his start in junior as an Assistant Coach with the St. Michaels Buzzers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League during the 2010-11 season, following several years of coaching minor hockey in the Toronto area. After two seasons with the Buzzers, Lazary moved on to be an Assistant Coach at his hometown York University. He made the jump to the OHL in 2014 with the Sarnia Sting as an Assistant Coach, where he spent two seasons prior to joining the Spirit. While last season was a rebuilding year for the Spirit, the future is bright as they'll return a roster of young talent, including incoming rookie Michael Misha, who was selected 1st overall in the OHL draft after having been granted exceptional player status, meaning he will play his rookie season in Saginaw as an underage player. Find out Lazary's philosophy on teaching offensive tactics, how he handles the junior hockey balance of development and winning, and what he's picked up from a systems and tactics perspective from this year's NHL playoffs.

We are well into the second round of the playoffs and we are seeing some surprising results. Here at the Two Man Forecheck we have another week of candid discussion, starting with the USA getting the Bronze medal today against the Germans in the IIHF World Championships. We break down the Barzal/Krejci incident in game 4 of the second round series between the B's and the Islanders. We have a frank conversation regarding the 4 game suspension of Mark Scheifele. Should it have been less? The Preds may have to move one of their high price players after their early playoff exit in order to start some kind of rebuild in Nashville. Should it be Duchene or Johansen? Draft Lottery took place June 2nd, and Buffalo is in the top spot. Detroit, once again, has fallen, as they will be picking 6th. Adam Pelech is an RFA at the end of this season and could possibly see offer sheets from teams other than the Islanders. Connor Toms is heading to the Soo Greyhounds, Taya Currie is heading to the Sarnia Sting, the first female drafted in the OHL Draft at 267. Finally, we discuss how Charlie Coyle could be considered elite. Lots to discuss and comment on, so Enjoy the Show!

In this episode we learn what scouts really look for in a player from off-ice behaviour and family life, to on-ice skills and hockey sense. Hear firsthand where the emphasis lies when selecting a player, what background checks are done, and what factors contribute to predicting a player's potential. Prior to working in Hockey Operations, Brian worked on the business side of hockey. He earned a degree in Kinesiology and a Masters in Sport Management from the University of Windsor then proceeded to do a year-long internship with the Detroit Red Wings. Following his time as an intern, Brian started his career building the corporate sales for the Saginaw Spirit as they were relocated from North Bay. He continued progressing with Saginaw and eventually made a move to Vice President of Hockey Operations with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. This week on the podcast is a story of perseverance. In the weeks prior to realizing OHL success with the Sarnia Sting Jordan Hill was cut from Junior B. With most players on that ice not even thinking about the possibility of professional hockey as a future Jordan persevered and was able to not only make the Sarnia Sting that season but become the rookie of the year and extend his hockey career another 12 years, further developing into a coaching career with the Owen Sound Attack. In our episode we talk about dealing with the adversity of being cut from a team, checking your ego when coming in to higher levels of play, and the trouble of being an athlete with the ability to coast through younger levels before reaching junior or the pros. It is almost more difficult when you are the top player from day one to understand the importance of what a quality work ethic can do for you. Overall this episode gave so much good insight as to what it takes to really create success in sport and isn't that what we are all about??
