Batman: City of Madness - The Ultimate Christian Ward Interview

Racing on the heels of Batman Day, we celebrate eighty-five years of the Caped Crusader by finally digging into one of our recent favorite Dark Knight stories, Batman: City of Madness by Christian Ward. Technically, this is our third conversation with Ward about this particular story, but it's the first one where we can dig into it page-by-page, going full spoilers and properly exploring its characters and themes. The hardcover is now available from DC Comics, so please grab your copy, snuggle up with it, and venture into the Gotham Below with us. Batman: City of Madness spent years percolating inside Christian Ward's imagination. It extends from his infatuation with an iconic work, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth. It operates like a spiritual sequel but comes jammed with personal touches that only Ward could contribute. Our worst selves will argue for their survival. That's just one revelation we land upon while chatting with Christian Ward in this episode. We discuss the initial Gotham Below concept by starting at its end, the purpose of mirroring Batman and his rogues, and how it ideologically prepares readers for his newly announced Two-Face series, which will drop on December 4th. Continue this conversation with Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Twitter and Instagram. A particular story has rattled around Christian Ward's imagination for years. It's been there since childhood, really. Since he first encountered Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth. Last year, he sent out a Tweet, taunting the universe to grant his wish - to tell his cosmic Batman saga. Now, we're weeks away from the cosmos' answer. Batman: City of Madness #1 lands on shelves from DC Comics on October 10th. It's a real humdinger, a comic that feels unlike any other Bat-book that has come before but is absolutely in conversation with the stone-cold classic mentioned above. Christian Ward explores the questions that probably nag every artist who tackles the Bat, but he does so in ways that spark new ideas and new queries. After catching a sneak preview of the first issue, we were eager to get the writer/artist in our Love Nest Zoom room. We discuss his relationship with Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth and how it evolved into Batman: City of Madness. We consider Bruce Wayne's relation to his rogues and what does and does not separate him from so-called villains like Joker and Two-Face. As we do every time the caped crusader comes up on the podcast, we challenge his role as Gotham's vigilante while also addressing how much fun it is to watch him punch punks in the face. However, before we dig into City of Madness and the terrifying Batman Below that lurks underneath our favorite wretched city, we reflect on our Baltimore Comic-Con/Small Press Expo double-header weekend, including the world premiere of Married to Comics. We review these events and consider what makes each con so unique and why we could never give up one for the other. This podcast continues our year-long partnership with Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader. Each episode from now on will feature our new "Referrals" segment, sponsored by them, where we recommend other comics titles for those wishing to explore this week's themes and concepts further. CLICK HERE to learn more and explore Omnibus' unique, browsable space. Also, make sure that you keep abreast on all things Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Twitter and Instagram. In a few weeks, Christian Ward will appear in our Patreon feed, conducting a page-by-page breakdown of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth. Join now for just one dollar, and listen to the previous entry in our comic creator series where artists celebrate their favorite single issues - Daniel Warren Johnson on The 'Nam #9.  If you missed our previous conversation with Christian Ward, talking about Blood Stained Teeth, you can find it HERE. #Batman #ArkhamAsylum #ASeriousHouseOnSeriousEarth #GrantMorrison #DaveMckean #AsiloArkham #Joker #TwoFace #AmadeusArkham #ClayFace #DoctorDestiny #Scarecrow #MadHatter #KillerCroc #BlackMask #JamesGordon #Tarot #Moon #Simbolismo #Symbolism #Madhouse #Manicomio #AliceInWonderland #DownTheRabbitHole #MixedMedia #MediosMixtos #Collage #PsychologicalHorror #HorrorPsicologico #ExperimentalComics #ComicsExperimentales #Onírico #Surreal #Dreamlike #Surrealism #DCComics #BatmanComics #ComicBookPodcast #ComicPodcast #PodcastDeComics #LaViñetaErranteRadio --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/viñetaerrante/support

Arkham Asylum Mock Trial at San Diego Comic Fest

A mock trial based upon Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth featuring law students from Golden Gate University, California Western School of Law, and the University of Kentucky. Recorded live at San Diego Comic Fest on March 9, 2019. Overview of Facts:  Harvey Dent had his silver dollar taken away as part of his treatment at Arkham Asylum. Psychotherapist Ruth Adams claimed Dent was being “cured” of his obsession with duality. Dent's treatment was replacing his coin with a six-sided die and then Tarot cards. Dr. Adams next stage of treatment was to introduce Dent to I-Ching. Dr. Adams believed Dent would have a completely functional judgment facility that did not result in black and white absolutes.Result of Treatment: Dent was unable to make basic decisions, such as when to go to the bathroom. The treatment left Dent hollow and sitting under a table the day the inmates took over asylum.  The Lawsuit: Attorneys retained by the Wayne Foundation have brought 42 U.S.C.S. 1983 lawsuit against Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, Dr. Ruth Adams, and DOES 1-50, claiming that Harvey Dent's treatment violated the 8th and 14th Amendments. Dent's attorneys have claimed Dr. Cavendish and Dr. Adams demonstrated a “deliberate indifference to a prisoner's serious illness” and subjected Dent to "the unnecessary and wanton infliction of pain" by taking away his coin. Attorneys for the state have brought a summary judgment motion on the grounds that Dent's coin was not taken away as a form of punishment, but a form of treatment.Attorneys retained by the Wayne Foundation on Dent's behalf have brought suit against Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, Dr. Ruth Adams, and DOES 1-50, claiming that Dent's treatment violated the 8th Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. The Defendants have argued that Dent's coin was not taken away as a form of punishment, but a form of treatment.Arguments by Parties The Plaintiffs are seeking a preliminary instruction against Arkham Asylum to cease any treatments on Harvey Dent that deprive him of his coin. The Plaintiff will argue that Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, and Dr. Ruth Adams, were all deliberately indifferent to Harvey Dent's medical condition, that the treatment amounted to cruel and unusual punishment, and that a preliminary injunction is needed in order to prevent further cruelty to Harvey Dent.   The Defendants oppose the motion on the grounds that Harvey Dent's treatment was not punishment or deliberate indifference to the patient's medical needs, therefore there is not a likelihood of success on the merits, risk of irreparable harm, the balance of equities and hardships do not tip in the plaintiff's favor, and an injunction is not in the public interest.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thelegalgeeks)

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (often shortened to Batman: Arkham Asylum) is a Batman graphic novel written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dave McKean. It was originally published in the United States in both hardcover and softcover editions by DC Comics in 1989. The subtitle is taken from Philip Larkin's poem "Church Going". The graphic novel was the first Batman story to be written by Morrison before becoming a regular writer in future Batman titles. Inspired by previous works like The Dark Knight Returns, Morrison conceived the story to be his own different approach to the character, using heavy symbolical references and the deconstruction of many iconic Batman villains. The story follows the vigilante Batman, who is called upon to quell a maddening riot taking place in the infamous Arkham Asylum, a psychiatric hospital housing the most dangerous supervillains in Gotham City. Inside, Batman confronts many of his enduring rogues gallery, such as the Joker, Two-Face, and Killer Croc, many of whom have changed since he last saw them. As Batman ventures deeper, he discovers the origin of how the asylum was established, the history of its builder Amadeus Arkham, and the supernatural and psychological mystery that has been haunting the area. Upon its release, the graphic novel garnered commercial and critical acclaim, and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Batman stories of all time, and one of the best works of Grant Morrison's career.[1] The graphic novel would later become the definitive story of Arkham Asylum, a critical part of the Batman mythos. The critically acclaimed, similarly-titled video game Batman: Arkham Asylum, the first game in the Batman: Arkham series, was partially influenced by the graphic novel.
