The Beat's Heidi MacDonald returns to the podcast to talk about Penguin Random House's acquisition of BOOM! Studios and our expectations for San Diego Comic Con. MacDonald discusses the big PRH/BOOM! news, why the former may have wanted to acquire the latter, the big news ahead of San Diego Comic Con, where things are right now, DSTLRY's big move, how SDCC is shaping up, how unique SDCC is relative to other conventions, the big plans The Beat has for the event, her upcoming daily TV show, celebrating 20 years of The Beat, the evolution of comic cons, what keeps her excited about The Beat, and more. There are two corrections from the podcast. First, Filip Sablik's title at BOOM! Studios was actually President of Publishing & Marketing, not Sales & Marketing as I stated in the episode. Second, while Tiny Onion does a lot of design and production work for DSTLRY, Emma Price, Erika Schnatz, Jared K. Fletcher, Francesco Francavilla, and Lee Garbett have also done design work on a variety of individual titles and logos.

This potential merger builds on the long history of collaboration between Skydance and Paramount, which includes a five-year co-financing and distribution agreement that started in 2009 and was renewed twice before ending in 2021. Skydance has been expanding its reach in recent years, launching Skydance Television in 2013 and Skydance Animation in 2017, and has also signed a multi-year feature film deal with Apple TV+ and secured a $1 billion credit facility for investments. On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic and the first official episode of spooky season the guys are talking Afterlife with Archie by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla. But first what does Jake want to do for work? Is this comic brutal? What is Anthony's free dark secret? Should he feel like he's stealing? Should the guys Freaky Friday themselves ? Is this the first Archie Comic Cody has read? What kind of hat does Jughead have? Is this all Reggie's fault? Has Archie been fucking for decades? Was Jake in Riverdale? Is Sabrina the Teenage Witch the first comic book property we watched? Who should we fuck and marry between Veronica and Betty? What is Jake's plan? What horror movies and tropes does this use? Episode 273. We're kicking off our annual all-horror October with 2013's Afterlife with Archie comics, from writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla. Jughead's beloved pup Hot Dog has been hit by a car, and when he asks Sabria the Teenage Witch to bring him back to life, he comes back wrong. Hot Dog bites Jughead, starting a zombie apocalypse in Riverdale. Archie, Betty, Veronica, and a crew of other traumatized survivors have to leave their town behind to go look for help. We discuss our limited personal contexts for the 80-year Archie franchise, how this series feels like a rough draft for the Riverdale TV show, and how vampires could fit into all of this.00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:04 - Welcome and banter 00:03:36 - Spoiler free thoughts: Afterlife with Archie 00:25:07 - Housekeeping 00:30:56 - Spoilers!! It's our very first comic book episode! Although we've reviewed several movie adaptations of comics in previous episodes (SWAMP THING, BLADE, CONSTANTINE, etc), we're delighted to review our first comic miniseries on the podcast: NIGHT OF THE GHOUL from writer Scott Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla. We get into what prompted our first comic review during the review, but this was a delight to record and we're so excited to welcome a special guest back to our pod: Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein! If you haven't read the comic miniseries from Best Jackett Press yet, you can read digital versions via Comixology / Amazon Prime, but we absolutely encourage you to pick up either the single issues or the trade paperback versions from your local comic shop. It's Hawkeye time! Again! Specifically the second half of 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francavilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias are digging into the tumultuous last 12 issues (that's #12-22 and an annual, for those keeping score at home,) the contemporaneous history of the issues, and fighting to figure out what order to talk about the dang issues in. Seriously! It's nearly as complicated as some of the "War of Kings" stuff.Next book club, we're reading the blessedly short "Taskmaster: Unthinkable" from 2010. It's four issues and collected in a single trade. Easy! Find it through your local library or back-issue bin. Next episode however, things take a turn for the fantastic. Excelsior!

This week we talk about a whole lotta Moon Knight! First and foremost we talk about MOON KNIGHT (Vol 8, Issues 1-14) by Jeff Lemire, Greg Smallwood, Jordie Bellaire, Wilfredo Torres, Francesco Francavilla and James Stokoe. BUT THEN, we also talk about the Disney Plus series, starring Oscar Isaac, F. Murray Abraham, May Calamawy, Oscar Isaac, Antonia Salib, Ethan Hawke and last but not least Oscar Isaac. This is part two of "Hawkeye" by Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Annie Wu, which is included in the trade paperbacks "Hawkeye: LA Woman" and "Hawkeye: Rio Bravo," or else the second half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop." It's also by Matt Hollingsworth, Javier Pulido, Francesco Francavilla, and Chris Eliopoulis. We finally get a chance to go deeper into the story of the two Hawkeyes, as Kate moves to LA to hang out with Columbo and Clint goes from futzing around to finding out. We'll also talk about strategies for writing tricky content and the complications of writing legacy characters. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on volume two of "Golden Age" by Roxanne Moreil and Cydril Pedrosa.
This episode covers "Hawkeye" by Matt Fraction and David Aja. It's part one of two, and is equivalent to either the trade paperbacks "Hawkeye: My Life Is a Weapon" and "Hawkeye: Little Hits," or else the first half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop." It's also by Matt Hollingsworth, Javier Pulido, Francesco Francavilla, Steve Lieber, Alan Davis, and Jesse Hamm. Confused yet? So are we. Honestly JD, Jeff, and Jam are going to spend the first half of this episode airing our grievances about the completely opaque way that Marvel collects its trades. But eventually we get to talk about this really interesting book, how it does a lot of interesting things with the superhero genre and with these characters in particular, and how even in the golden age of graphic novels, there are “mainstream” trades worth waiting for. Also, apologies to Francesco Francavilla and Javier Pulido, we had you completely mixed up for like… most of this episode. Music by Sleuth Our next episode will be on the second half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop," or the trades "Hawkeye: L.A. Woman" and "Hawkeye: Rio Bravo," by Matt Fraction and David Aja.

After mentioning Scott Snyder several times over the course of the podcast, we finally get around to talking about some of his works. This October, Snyder released three first issues on Comixology and we decided to check them out and talk about each.We Have Demons (art: Greg Capullo) is an epic story about the eternal conflict between good and evil and the teen that inevitably gets caught in the middle.Clear (art: Francis Manapul) is a sci fi/noir book that takes us to a world where neuro veils can make the world look however you want and that kind of fantasy is big business.Night of the Ghoul (art: Francesco Francavilla) is an old school horror about a long missing horror film and a mysterious monster we know only as the Ghoul. So give em a read and then come join us as we break down what we thought.Full episode archive: Bubbling Up PodcastFollow us on Instagram or Facebook!
