We wrap up my interview with Judd Winick by starting on his decision to bring back Jason Todd (the 2nd Robin) from the dead as The Red Hood, then move on to his work during the New 52 at DC, the animated shows he worked on, and finally get to his decade-plus work writing and drawing the Hilo series of books. But first, a remembrance for another comics book professional who left us too soon.
In this 2nd of three parts of my interview with Judd Winick, we talk about his time on The Real World, the doors that opened and how he grew as a storyteller from writing about his experiences, leading to his comic book work for DC (and a little Marvel).
Starting at the very beginning of Judd Winick's life, part one of this interview continues through to his college days, the value of an art education, and his early comic strip, “Nuts & Bolts.”

Cast your mind back, if you will, to the 1990s, when reality TV was new. Though the genre was young, many had already written off shows like The Real World as trash. But one young man saw an opportunity, and thought that maybe there was a way he could use television to save lives. His name was Pedro Zamora, and his work wound up changing the course of more lives than he could have possibly imagined. That story's the subject of a new video that I just posted this weekend — about Pedro, about MTV, and about a turning point in the fight against AIDS.When Pedro was on The Real World in 1994, one of his closest friends was an artist named Judd Winick. Judd very generously spoke to me about his time on The Real World for my video. I have excerpts from that interview in the video on YouTube. But Judd shared so many fascinating stories and insights that I wanted to make our full conversation available. So this week, for a special episode of the Sewers of Paris, you'll hear my full interview with Judd Winick. We chatted about getting onto The Real World, about befriending Pedro, and about becoming part of a movement that changed the course of history.Check the episode description for a link to my YouTube video about Pedro's work and legacy. And if you want to see more of Judd's work, I'm also including links to his book Pedro & Me; to the upcoming 11th book in Judd's HiLo series; and more information about the National AIDS Memorial and the Pedro Zamora Scholarship. My video about Pedro: https://youtu.be/o2Le9Bf_s3wPedro & Me: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780805089646/pedroandme/ HiLo Book 11: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741634/hilo-book-11-the-great-space-iguana-by-judd-winick/ The Pedro Zamora Scholarship: https://www.aidsmemorial.org/pedro-zamora-scholarship Donate to the National AIDS Memorial and the scholarship: https://www.aidsmemorial.org/donate-now

This is the true story... nope, that's a total hack intro for someone who has more than transcended his appearance on MTV's The Real World San Francisco. Yes, we're talking about Judd Winick: cartoonist, writer, and creator on some of the best comics in the last 30 years. We rewind all the way back before Real World, where he and someone named Brad Metzer were slumming it in Boston, trying to get their careers going. We talk about the development of Pedro & Me, his award winning first graphic novel about his time with AIDs activist and fellow RW cast member, Pedro Zamora. Then there's the Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Batman, Exiles, and so many more! And if that ain't enough, his third act is as the engine behind the highly successful series of kids graphic novels, Hilo. We're tired just thinking about all the work he's done! You can follow Judd on X and Instagram @juddwinick. INTERVIEW: Equal parts artist and writer, Phil Hester has been doing the comic book thing for 30 years now! He broke into the mainstream via his work with Kevin Smith on an adaptation of the film Clerks. That connection got him noticed in the DC offices, and soon it was off to the races, penciling Swamp Thing and more. Phil's art is perhaps best known from a long run on Green Arrow, where he collaborated with A-list writers like Smith, Brad Meltzer, and Judd Winick. More interesting work followed, including Irredeemable Ant-Man (with Robert Kirkman), El Diablo, and Green Hornet. He even moved into writing, taking over for J. Michael Straczynski on Wonder Woman. And Phil has a humongous collection of original art! You can follow Phil on Facebook and X (@philhester). _____________________If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Episode 174!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Exiles Vol. 1: Down the Rabbit Hole", as well as going over some nerd news! In this episode, we review a trade paper back and take another stab at the "Thicc Cut," which is a show we do exclusively for our Patreon supporters where we go more in depth on the issues. We discuss our previous attempts at breaking down reviews panel by panel, and how we found it difficult to read the Batman: Nightfall series due to it being very "of its time." Lex recommends a book called Exiles by Marvel, which they loved when they first read it years ago. The book is a self-contained run and is more linear compared to Nightfall, which had a ton of tie-ins and required readers to jump around multiple books to get the full story. Simon is excited to read Exiles as he likes alternate worlds and "what if" scenarios, and Lex believes he will enjoy it based on his knowledge of comic book characters. "Down the Rabbit Hole!" Collects Exiles (2001-2008 Marvel) #1-4. Written by JUDD WINICK. Meet the Exiles, a time-travelling mutant conglomerate dedicated to righting the wrongs of the Marvel Universe. Led by the teleporter Blink, from the Age of Apocalypse, this rag-tag group from alternate realities is guided by The Tallus, an instrument leading them from place to place in order to fulfill their missions of cosmic repair. It's a pivotal moment in Bitch Talk herstory. We were able to "sit down" with Real World San Francisco cast members (and storytellers) Pam Ling and Judd Winick as well as directors Stacey Woefel and Bill Horner from the documentary Keep the Cameras Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way.All of us at Bitch Talk were teenagers when this season of The Real World came out and it was a game changer. We were all affected by this season and knew deep down it was different. And, during San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival, you can see how an activist named Pedro Zamora changed the conversation about being a person who was living with HIV and then subsequently dies of AIDS. We spoke with Stacey, Bill, Pam, and Judd about why this film is coming out now, what they may have learned about Pedro that they didn't know while the doc was being made, landing a sit-down interview with President Bill Clinton, what it was like to know Pedro as a friend, how Pedro's family feels about the film, and so much more. It was and is an honor to have all of these folks on our show and to be able to talk about Pedro was healing. His presence was felt during this interview and we're moved to keep his memory and activism going -- even if it's just a small part. We walked away from the interview knowing we need more Pedros in this world. --You can see Keep the Camera's Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way at the Frameline Film Festival on June 20 at the Castro Theater and streaming online on June 24 - June 30--Follow Keep the Cameras Rolling on IG , Twitter , Facebook, and their websiteFollow Stacey Woelfel on IG, Twitter, and FacebookFollow Bill Horner on IG and FacebookFollow Judd Winick on IG, Twitter, Facebook and at his websiteFollow Pam Ling on IG--Thanks for listening and for your support! Acclaimed writer/artist Judd Winick joined the show to cover a bevy of topics. Winick has written for DC Comics characters including popular runs on Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and The Outsiders. He created the Red Hood character from the legacy of Jason Todd, including writing the screenplay for the DC Universe animated feature Batman: Under the Red Hood. In this episode, Winick discusses his iconic comics run, and the issues facing creators when their work gets turned into a movie or television series. Judd Winick rose to national attention when he appeared on MTV's The Real World: San Francisco. He discusses how he met his wife on the show, and his close friend Pedro Zamora, who died shortly after the show was filmed. Zamora was also the subject of Winick's graphic novel Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, and What I Learned. He is the author of the acclaimed book series Hilo, with a new novel coming in 2022. It's my absolute pleasure to share this very special chat with you in honor of World AIDS Day (December 1st). My guest today is none other than Judd Winick from Season 3 of The Real World San Francisco or as many remember, Pedro Zamora's close friend and roommate. In 1994, Pedro Zamora became the first HIV+ person to appear on a reality tv show. He showed the world what HIV and AIDS was for him, that he was a person living with AIDS, not dying from it. Pedro lost his battle with AIDS before the year ended (Nov. 11, 1994) and the world mourned together as we had all fallen in love with this beautiful human. **Please Subscribe, Rate, Review and Share this podcast** My Links: Website: https://www.jennifervaughan.org Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennifervaughanhiv Instagram (personal): https://www.instagram.com/jenniferleighvaughan YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7nqJb8dp_5awmBRCKUrTcw Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vongirl Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/vongirl24
