Dr. John Stahl-Wert is the Founder of the Center for Serving Leadership. He has pioneered training solutions for thirty years, working with organizations worldwide that want to produce outstanding results by investing in their people. He has written eight books, including the international best-sellers The Serving Leader and Ten Thousand Horses. John has coached executives in hundreds of other businesses in the U.S., Singapore, and Hong Kong. John has been married to Milonica, his business partner, for 44 years. They enjoy designing and building things, traveling, going to church, and loving and being with their family, friends, neighbors, and Serving Leader colleagues from around the world. This week on the show, John and I discuss the concept of servant leadership and how John's strategic thinking and activator personality still guide his approach to problem-solving and decision-making. He shares the significance of clear values for leaders, why learning from failures is important, and how to practice effective delegation so the next generation can take over. John also discusses the traits of successful leaders and the importance of humility and vulnerability in leadership.  “The serving leader is the only kind of leader.” - Dr. John Stahl-Wert “You need to lead by values.” - Dr. John Stahl-Wert  “Suffering builds perseverance; perseverance builds character. We have to be willing, as leaders, to hurt.” -  Dr. John Stahl-Wert This Week on The Wow Factor: John's upbringing as a conservative Mennonite in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with a mix of Amish and Mennonite influences John shares his leadership experience in high school, understanding that deferring leadership led to regret and a lack of inclusivity Why leaders across the globe share the traits of being teachable and willing to learn from their experiences How John's strategic thinking and activator personality guides his approach to problem-solving and decision-making Why company values must be clear and specific for others to understand and follow How to make small, incremental changes in leadership practice Why delegation involves extending trust and authority, but incorrect delegation can do more damage than good Why it's so important to bake goodness into a company for future generations, and how value is destroyed when companies are sold without a strong cultural foundation Dr. John Stahl-Wert's Words of Wisdom: In servant leadership, we serve our people, standards, and values. If we serve ourselves primarily, we destroy value. Laying yourself down for something more important than yourself is not an easy path, but it's worth it. What does it look like to be an effective leader? As Christians, we want to follow the example of our leader Jesus Christ. So what did his leadership look like, and how can we emulate this?     In this episode, Holly and I continue our leadership trait series as we dive into an aspect of leadership that is firmly grounded in our faith. While some of the traits we discuss are widely accepted by the world, this one originates from our ultimate leader.   Jesus, the most impactful leader of all time, flipped the script by demonstrating servant leadership. He did things differently than what people were expecting, and his life and leadership changed the world forever.    We’ll look at 2 specific ways that Jesus demonstrated servant leadership as well as discuss some practical ways that we can develop an attitude of service in our lives.   Note: this conversation is derived in part from Holly’s reading of the book “Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence For Every Believer” by J. Oswald Sanders.   For the full show notes for this episode, go to estherlittlefield.com/episode122. Darrin Gray serves as President and CEO of The Lions Lead.  Darrin has more than 25 years of executive leadership experience in communications, media, branding, sports philanthropy and non-profit sectors and has managed annual budgets as large as $40,000,000. Based upon his work with All Pro Dad, the national non-profit founded by Tony Dungy, Darrin is recognized as a thought leader and speaker on the topics of family, fatherhood, mentoring and leadership.  Darrin co-authored The Jersey Effect, Beyond the World Championship, and supports his community by serving on non-profit boards and as the President of the Center for Serving Leadership at the Sagamore Institute, an action-oriented think tank. Darrin has a unique window into the National Football League by virtue of his day-to-day involvement with All Pro Dad, Family First’s national fatherhood program cofounded by Tony Dungy and Clyde Christensen. Darrin interacts with NFL athletes, coaches, and alumni that serve as spokesmen for All Pro Dad, and he has conducted programming with over half of the NFL franchises. He develops innovative partnership strategies to reach families via special events, broadcast, and new media with the assistance of media partners and corporate sponsors. A few years later he invited NFL punter Hunter Smith, while he was still playing in the NFL, to coauthor the book and to help him explore the many ways that sports shape culture, with the help of his world champion teammates and coaches.    In today’s episode, we discuss: Working with NFL Hall of Fame Coach Tony Dungy His involvement with All Pro Dad Taking a group of NFL players to Israel   Twitter: @AllProDadLeader Instagram: @AllProDadLeader Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/darrin-gray-4995027 Website: http://home.thelionslead.com Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/allprodadleader All Pro Dad: www.allprodad.com The Jersey Effect: www.JerseyEffect.org Promise Keepers: www.PromiseKeepers.org Darrin enjoys listening to the following podcasts ...
