Are the construction and property industries really making progress on inclusivity, or just making promises? Are we still seeing discrimination and unconscious bias within the built environment sector? Or are we happily witnessing progress? What does inclusivity really look like in practice - and are we genuinely moving the dial, or just reshaping the same conversation? On paper, the sector looks more diverse than it once did but there is still a long way to go. If we look at gender alone, women make up around 15 per cent of the UK construction workforce and roughly 31 per cent of partners or directors in architecture practices.Despite the number of public pledges, the gender pay gap in construction still sits at around 17 per cent, barely shifting in the past five years.Representation of ethnic minorities in construction hovers near 7 per cent, compared to about 14 per cent across the overall UK workforce, showing that racial diversity also lags behind national averages. What happens when a modular construction company leads with people first? Jon Scott of Creative Modular Construction joins the show to share how their motto—“We build people. We build buildings.”—is more than a slogan; it's the engine behind their remarkable growth. Jon walks through how CMC develops leaders on the shop floor, supports individuals from all backgrounds, and creates a culture where trust, purpose, and personal transformation translate directly into performance. We also discuss how CMC's people-first mindset has made it easier to adopt new processes and technologies (like Strucsoft) as they scale, blending craftsmanship, innovation, and culture into a resilient modular workflow. You'll Learn: How CMC builds a people-first culture that drives productivity and retention • Why investing in personal growth leads to stronger teams and better outcomes • How trust and purpose accelerate technology adoption and process improvements • What culture-building looks like in a fast-paced modular fabrication environment • How CMC is evolving its workflows as it scales its modular operations A powerful episode for anyone interested in modular construction, leadership development, or building high-performing teams through culture. MEET OUR GUEST Jonathan Scott serves as the Lead Draftsman at Creative Modular Construction, where he oversees the design and drafting behind a wide range of modular building projects. With a deep understanding of construction, engineering coordination, and practical field needs, Jonathan is the bridge between imagination and execution—translating concepts into clear, buildable plans that crews can trust. He's passionate about improving processes, solving complex layout challenges, and helping push the modular industry forward through smarter design. Outside of work, Jonathan enjoys life with his family and doing outreach in his community, and brings a grounded, faith-driven perspective to both his personal and professional life. TODD TAKES Building People Builds Performance CMC's commitment to “building people” isn't just a cultural slogan—it's a strategic advantage. When you invest in purpose, stability, and real community, people show up differently. They're engaged, they grow, and the work improves. Culture isn't an add-on for them; it's the engine behind everything they do. Trust Is the Foundation of Tech Adoption Introducing new tools like Strucsoft can be uncomfortable, but CMC's people leaned in because they trust the leadership guiding those decisions. That trust removes friction and accelerates adoption. When your team believes you're making choices that truly help them, change becomes something they embrace—not resist. When Purpose Meets Technology, Growth Takes Off The jump from producing two buildings in three days to three buildings in a single day is incredible. It's what happens when a clear mission, a supportive culture, and the right digital tools align. CMC shows that innovation isn't just about software—it's about creating a system where people and technology elevate each other. More Resources Thanks for listening! With over 15 years of experience in HR, she has led people and teams through hyper-growth, global expansion, and major cultural transformation. Panagiota is also an Executive Coach at MentorPass and Leaderology. Before HexClad Cookware, she was the Vice President of Human Resources at Common Thread Collective, where she helped scale the company from 20 to 80 employees across 10 states. In this episode… Scaling a company from $10 million to $100 million requires more than just great products or marketing; it demands an intentional and strategic approach to building and leading teams. Yet many leaders overlook people operations as a vital growth lever, treating HR as an administrative function rather than a revenue and culture driver. How can businesses rethink their people strategy to avoid burnout, misalignment, and stalled growth? People operations and organizational psychology expert Panagiota Hatzis emphasizes repositioning HR as a strategic business partner aligned with EBITDA goals. This requires maintaining relational equity — trust and mutual respect — between leaders and teams and optimizing processes to minimize burnout. Building culture intentionally through frequent communication, transparency, and accountability is crucial for maintaining alignment as you scale to the next stage of revenue. In this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris interviews Panagiota Hatzis, VP of Human Resources at HexClad Cookware, about using people operations as a strategic growth engine. Now, César is shaping the future of media through business development at olio.is and Streamhub, blending his philosophical vision with practical innovation. Key Highlights of Our Interview: MTV: From a Dream to Daily Life “Watching MTV as a kid, I thought, ‘That's the dream.' By 2003, I was living it. From Portugal to London, I went from fan to colleague—working with my idols and hanging out with heroes.” A Front-Row Seat to Media Transformation “From analog to digital, concerts to streaming, I've been at the frontline of media's biggest shift. And yes, I saw REM's last concert—jealous yet? Launching MTV Portugal, mentoring MTV Base Africa, bringing MTV Italy and Greece to life—it was a whirlwind of concerts, launches, and 1 billion viewers streaming the EMAs from Lisbon.” The Dark Side of the Spotlight “Being immersed in the industry, I witnessed its pitfalls. Amy Winehouse, a radiant talent, was in the wrong hands. Seeing how brilliance was overshadowed by exploitation made me question the industry's priorities. When Amy died, it wasn't just a loss; it was a wake-up call. I couldn't be part of a system that profits from pain. That day, I knew—I needed to change the game.” A Quest for a Better Industry “Creativity deserves care, not exploitation. That realization sparked a mission to create spaces where artistry thrives without the shadows of industry's darker sides.” Designing Society, One Summit at a Time “As a self-proclaimed ‘designer for society,' I worked with governments and innovators to connect tourism and tech. The Web Summit is proof that big ideas and small countries can make magic.” _________________________ Connect with Us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Cesar Couto Ferreira ______________________ Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. With so much toxicity in our industry I decided to talk about the benefits of building people up vs. tearing them down. How do our words and actions shape the environment around us and how negativity breeds negativity. We should all be supporting each other since we're all in the same boat, but yet we seem to always be firing the cannons at each other. So think about the things you say or how you actions can affect someone before the next time you act out towards your fellow peer. God is a God who speaks, and we bear his image as communicators. Speech is incredibly powerful— there is nothing more fundamental than the need to be understood and to understand. This sermon considers the power of words under two headings: 1) One of the powers of the tongue is a power over you, the speaker; and 2) Words mold our character. his sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 17, 1991. How do we get rid of bitterness toward others? Is it even possible? This sermon explores the external and internal side to getting rid of bitterness. Externally, forgiveness must sometimes be granted before it is felt; internally, you have to put on your “new self” in Christ.
