There are still a few tickets left for my last live workshop of the year and the big party I'm throwing to celebrate 3 years of About Progress!! I would love to meet you in person there! P.S. If you purchase 2+ tickets to the party you'll get 25% off each. I shared in my newsletter a few weeks ago that I recently took the Enneagram test and although interesting to see it all explained, I wasn't that surprised by my results. It's kind of what got me thinking about today's topic, because I know I can be people pleaser. But, is that bad? Is that good? And how many more of us can relate? Spoiler alert for this short little episode: I don't think it's all bad! I talk about something I call the "shield of perfectionism" and if your people pleasing nature is to maintain that cover, then you have some work to do. However, it is good to care what others think in the right ways. So, no, I don't want you to give up on what other people think about you. I do want you to stop hinging your worth on the approval of others, though. It is possible to anchor into yourself, have internal strength, and still be real with people. I have recently gone through this process with myself (after who knows how many times) and am happy to share exactly what that has looked like for me. About a few other things Amazon made me do it! If you've been around for a little while you've heard me talk about this special clock for little ones that helps them understand when it's time to get out of bed in the morning. I couldn't shake the thought in my head that stemmed from a comment made in one of my free online classes a few weeks ago. An attendee brought up some issues and we concluded the root of her problems was fear of failure. And if that doesn't sound familiar, let's talk more about it. I bet this fear has played its part in your life, too. When you are daring greatly you will fail in someway or another. Of course we're all aiming for success, we're all aiming to grow in the direction we think we need to, so naturally failures will occur sometimes. It's in the way we view failure that we can really find success. And in this episode I share what that has looked like for me. Very early on in the podcast I interviewed Jaimee Davis who was training for an Ironman. She shared that in her preparation she failed every day. Every day! And now she is an Ironman. See, failure doesn't mean we have to stop it just means we have to shift. I hope when you listen you get that encouragement to grow, fail, and keep trying anyway. About a few other things Amazon made me do it! If you've been around for a little while you know I love sharing my favorite skincare and makeup finds. Today I'm opening up about this important topic, how you can choose courage over comfort and why doing so will benefit you. If you're looking to act on this challenge I have to put in a plug for my last workshop of the year that's coming up next month. Entitled "Rediscover You", I will help you work through discomfort and be courageous. Plus, I'm throwing a big fun party that night and would love to see you there! Choose courage over comfort. A happenstance run-in with Brooke White at the airport last week gave me the push to get my thoughts on this matter into a short and hearty episode for you. It's so easy to stay in our comfort zones, even when we know it can be holding us back. I want to encourage you to keep your eyes on moving forward, and I share a long-time favorite quote of mine that can give you one perspective on that. About a few other things This lash and brow serum has been an Amazon favorite of mine for years, and I always go back to it even if I try something new. Did you know I used to be afraid of water? And in fact, kind of still am. Did you know I swim laps a few times a week? I use the word laps loosely, because if I go 2 minutes then have to hang on the side that's still okay, because I'm doing something. Through my own self-development I've realized that my old mindset, all or nothing thinking, is the worst! Going all in on anything usually comes at a cost. If you can't see that cost right away it is probably your own sanity. Because what if you're going all in and something goes wrong? Does that derail you? And consider the opposite, does the fear of starting have you trapped into doing nothing? I still find myself slipping into this habit of all or nothing thinking from time to time. My solution is to tell myself to have a something mindset. I challenge you to attempt the same. In this episode I give you a few prompts that you can ask yourself in order to just keep doing. I also remind you that your worth is not dependent on any outcome, it's the process that transforms you. About a few other things... During these episodes I share my latest and greatest Amazon find. Americans, as individuals, carry a lot of debt. But don’t panic! Not all debt is created equal, and not all debt is necessarily a bad thing. Some debt—like mortgages, vehicles, even some college degrees—can be good debt. There are also bad kinds of debt, too. But the thing about individual debt is that it’s the individual's responsibility and really only the business of the borrower and the lender. In this episode of WRLWND Radio, Marcello Sukhdeo talks about the rapid growth of voice-powered apps on Amazon’s Alexa voice platform, also, a study that reveals that extreme internet usage can lead to mental illness and he touches on the growth of video-gamers worldwide. Show Notes: Amazon’s Alexa Amazon’s Alexa voice platform has now passed 15,000 skills, these are the voice-powered apps. This is up from last September when it was around 10,000. Today, Amazon is currently the leader in voice-powered devices and it is expected to control 70 percent of the market this year — well ahead of Google Home, Lenovo, LG and others. Due to the increased interest in voice-powered devices, Apple has joined the party with the with its own Siri-powered device, the HomePod which will be released this December. In terms of competition, Google Home has just 378 voice apps available as of June 30, and Microsoft’s Cortana has only 65. So, they are way behind. Internet usage can lead to mental illness More than one-third of 15-year-old children in the UK could be classified as ‘extreme internet users’, or those who are online for more than six hours daily, outside of school. A report from UK think-tank Education Policy Institute (EPI) states that children in the UK have a higher rate of extreme usage. EPI examined the relation between social media use including online time and mental illness. While 12 per cent of children who spend no time on social networking websites on a normal school day have symptoms of mental ill health, that figure rises to 27 per cent for those who are on the sites for three or more hours a day. The study went on to say that they would caution against simply restricting a child’s access, claiming that this could actually hurt kids in the long run by preventing them from learning the skills they needed to cope with stressful events online. Video-gamers growing worldwide Nearly a third of the earth’s population is an active video-gamer, and that number will only grow, according to a study commissioned by Razer, the maker of high-end mice and other gaming accessories. According to the study, in 2016, 2.1 billion people were “active gamers”. An active gamer is defined as someone who plays a game once a month or spends at least an hour a week playing. Of the 2.1 billion people, over 71 per cent are millennials. This group according to the study is not only huge, but also young, which is a dream demographic for a company looking for growth in this area. Tech Bytes Students from the Eindhoven University of Technology have designed the first ever system that allows a bus to drive on formic acid. Formic acid naturally occurs in stinging nettles and certain species of ants, but it's also manufactured cheaply and safely on an industrial level, and is typically used for preserving livestock feed. The students use a blend of 99 per cent formic acid with a performance enhancing agent to create Hydrozine -- which has four times as much energy density as a battery -- to power the bus. This is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year. Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University put a mobile eye tracker and motion analysis sensors on participants who walked and crossed a kerb-like obstacle on the ground while writing, reading a text or talking on a phone. According to results, phone users spend up to 61 percent less time watching out for the obstacle, and bring their foot up "higher and slower" over the obstacle as they walked, adopting a "cautious and exaggerated stepping strategy" to minimise the risk of tripping. This tendency was observed most in users writing a text on their phones. Smartphone zombies are becoming a road hazard in cities around the world and efforts have been put in place to keep them and others safe. And finally, A battery-powered plane that can fly for 30 minutes has taken to the skies at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The "eFusion" has been developed by German engineering firm Siemens, and can reach a top speed of 140mph (225km/h).

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how Amazon is partnering with the British government to expand its testing of delivery drones, paving the way for commercial air deliveries for UK residents. The expanded testing, announced today in a press release, involves Amazon working with the UK Civil Aviation Authority to focus on operating drones outside of the line of sight of pilots, improving sensors for obstacle detection and avoidance, and having one pilot operate a team of multiple, semi-autonomous drones in unison. The project is the latest regulatory victory for Prime Air, the online retailer's ambitious program designed to bring cheaper and more forward-thinking delivery logistics in-house. Then, could what happened in Fukushima happen 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of New York City? That’s what many activists and former nuclear regulators fear for the Indian Point Energy Center, a nuclear power plant that has operated in Westchester County for more than four decades. The plant provides a good chunk of the energy needs for the surrounding area, but it has come under fire in recent years for safety and environmental concerns, including its warming of the Hudson River and a recent case of bolts missing in one of its reactors. Two of the plant’s three reactor units are currently operating on expired licenses, with the state of New York having denied parent company Entergy’s extension requests due to suspected violations of the federal Clean Water Act. Then, a 36 year old man tells a terrifying encounter he had near Homers Gap, Pennsylvania with what appeared to be an upright walking wolf that resembled the werewolves in the movie "Underworld" in the summer of 1998. Then, a flame of American 90s childhood went out on Tuesday with the death of Miss Cleo, the famous infomercial tarot card clairvoyant with the turbans, faux Jamaican accent and over-the-top dramas she solved with her tarot cards. Miss Cleo, real name Youree Dell Cleomili Harris, died in Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday, aged 53. She had been battling colon cancer. After the break, Cam brings up the disturbing tale of the Axe Man of Austin. A serial killer, who became known as the Servant Girl Annihilator, preyed upon the city of Austin, Texas, during the years 1884 and 1885. The killer's name originated with the writer O. Henry. The series of eight axe murders was referred to by contemporary sources as the "Servant Girl Murders." According to Texas Monthly, seven women (five black, two white) and one black man were murdered. Additionally, six women and two men were seriously injured. All the victims were attacked indoors while asleep in their bed. Five of the women were dragged, unconscious but still alive, and killed outdoors. Three of the women were severely mutilated while outdoors. All the victims were posed in a similar manner. Six of the murdered women had a "sharp object" inserted into their ears. The series of murders ended with the killing of two white women, Eula Phillips, age 17, and Susan Hancock, who was attacked while sleeping in the bed of her 16-year-old daughter on the night of 24 December 1885. Charles Wheelan is a lecturer in economics at Dartmouth and has authored five books. He joins us to discuss statistics, politics, and the economy. Economics is the study of how we allocate scarce resources. Poverty, health, education, are all affected by how we allocate resources so understanding that can help us to do a better, more fair job at that allocating. To make money, you have to produce value. Part of the reason for stagnant middle-class wages is because the value it used to produce is now being produced more cheaply, either through technology or outsourcing to countries where wages are very low. Money is not the only factor in economics. Sometimes money can stop people from doing something. Organ donation for example. Tying it to money makes people less likely to do it. Sometimes altruism is a greater driver than monetary gain. Most people will stay where you put them. Many people don’t save for retirement. Some companies now automatically enroll new employees in 401K plans. The employee is free to exit the plan or change it but most people will just default to what the company chose. Sometimes a small guaranteed incentive is less effective than a larger, but not guaranteed one. Getting $5 each time you go to the gym is less attractive to people than going to the gym and being entered into a raffle to win a car. This is why people play the lottery. Statistics are useful because they can be used to infer patterns. Recognizing and using the patterns can make you more money, or just help you to do things better. Which will probably earn you more money! Most people are pretty poor at appreciating probability. So we worry about Ebola but cross against the light. But the odds of getting Ebola are much smaller than the odds of getting hit by a car. Charles is a passive investor, an Index Fund guy. So the Dartmouth professor shares the LMM philosophy of buy and hold! The longer your horizon, the smoother the booms and busts level out for you. Charles is very politically active. He advocates for a Centrist Party, where people who feel alienated by the Republicans and Democrats can join together. We need something better in the middle, where most of us dwell. It was great to interview a guest who understands economics and is actively trying to improve the short comings of our current two party system. Show Notes Amazon: Charles Wheelan’s books.
