Michelle explains the differences between online dating, having a personal matchmaker and real-life events. This episode is with one of our guest speakers at The Unspeakeasy retreat in Chicago. If you're interested in going, learn more here. This week Meghan welcomes returning guest Erec Smith. He is an academic whose area of scholarship is Rhetoric, but he also writes and speaks frequently about the state of race politics in America, particularly the perils (and uses) of DEI. In this conversation, they talk about the concept of prescriptive racism, which Erec wrote about in a recent Boston Globe column, and ask whether the emergence of the concept of microaggressions has resulted mainly in people steering clear of one another. They also discuss what's happened on college campuses since Erec was on the podcast a year ago, including the ouster of college presidents like Harvard's Claudine Gay and U Penn's Liz Magill over free speech policies. He also discusses what he was like as a college student carrying around a copy of Emerson's Self-Reliance and how he would have felt if he'd been told that he was living under the thumb of white supremacy. Erec will be a guest speaker at the first-ever Unspeakeasy coed retreat in Chicago on June 4-5. We'll also be joined by recent Unspeakable guests Nadine Strossen and Lisa Selin Davis. To find out about that go to theunspeakeasy.com.) Make sure you listen all the way to the end, so you can hear an excerpt from Everyone's A Little Bit Racist from the Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q. (Probably not coming to a high school theater near you.) GUEST BIO Erec Smith is a professor of rhetoric at York College of PA, a research scholar at the Cato Insitute, and a co-founder and an editor at Free Black Thought. “The sense that each of them is gently teasing the other, and each enjoying the matching of wits. For all of the interesting people Jesus meets in John, I think this individual is the most interesting and that's part of why this story is there in the Gospel. There's a word game. A kind of “He said – She said”. The Samaritan woman starts by using the literal meaning of words and Jesus starts by using the symbolic meaning, and then, just when you realize what they're doing, they both switch and do the opposite. It takes two people to do that, and to enjoy it. I can almost imagine Jesus smiling at the joke when the woman talks to him. And her smiling back. In short, maybe these two liked each other. Give me some water, says Jesus. Clear enough. He wants the wet liquid. You're a Jew, she answers. Theological. She's stalling. If only you knew, I'd give you living water, he says. Wait a minute – all of a sudden we're not exactly talking about H2O anymore. Give me some of that living water that ends thirst, says the woman, and I won't need to haul it up the hill. Making fun of Jesus and his flipping back and forth…just a little. Water, water, water, and water, but not the same meaning each time. Literal, figurative, symbolic, real – lots of the double entendres that are characteristic of flirting, and all in only a couple of verses!” -https://unsettledwords.com/2014/03/21/did-jesus-flirt/. Mardi Fuller advocates for racial equity through writing, speaking and community building.   A lifelong backcountry adventurer, in January 2021 she became the first known Black person to hike all 48 of New Hampshire's high peaks in winter.  She lives in Boston where she works as a nonprofit communications director and volunteers with the local Outdoor Afro network.   She writes for Outside magazine, SKI magazine, Melanin Basecamp and more.   Mardi is committed to personal and corporate Black liberation and thereby, liberation for all humanity.  She believes deeply in nature's healing power. Mardi was involved in the short film, “Mardi & the whites” Film Abstract “Mardi Fuller has a rich relationship with nature that has evolved and deepened throughout her life. In the last 20 years she's dedicated much of her time to exploring the landscape in the White Mountains (unfortunately coined “The Whites” by New Englanders) on Abenaki land.  In that time Mardi summited all forty-eight 4,000 footers several times in all four seasons, often as the only Black person on the mountain. She has experienced great joy from communing with this landscape, but the overwhelmingly white hiking community that is so seeped in white supremacy and colonialism complicates her experiences.  Recently, she has focused on creating more opportunities for Black folks to join her in appreciating this magnificent wilderness. Enjoying this land with her community has been a liberating balm that has strengthened her sense of identity as an outdoorswoman.  “Mardi & the whites” is a peek into Mardi's relationship with the White Mountains, the great outdoors, and the community that surrounds them; Above all, it's a celebration of Black liberation in the wild.” Mardi's Quote about the film “The film is about my 20-year journey as an outdoorswoman in the super white White mountains of New Hampshire. It's about the pain and loss I experienced amidst a hiking community wed to the invisibility of whiteness. At the same time, I benefited from the grounding force that is Nature. Over the years and through much identity formation and development, I found a path of Black liberation.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Subscribe so you don't miss out.  You can support the Tough Girl mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media - especially in relation to adventure and physical challenge by signing up as a patron. www.patreon.com/toughgirlpodcast. Jim Gillespie is the man. He's not only throw your head back laughing level of funny as a stand up comedian but he's also a possibly reformed high level trouble maker. But also probably not reformed at all. We were lucky enough to get to sit down with this possible missing link in several cold case files and take him down the path to enlightenment so that you can laugh your way to a higher consciousness.    Jim Gillespie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejimgillespie/   Two Jacked Bros is the only comedy podcast that injects honest, unfiltered, and truly enlightening conversations into your soul. Sidney and Ansley truly believe that every personality type can achieve a higher consciousness without becoming unfunny soft-talking dorks about it.  If you like to laugh at inappropriate things but also think your sense of humor doesn't exempt you from opening your chakras wether you know what a chakra is or not, then Two Jacked Bros is your vibe. Sidney is a stand up comedian, practitioner of jiu jitsu, and constantly fantasizes about stopping a a real life crime then saying something funny about it when interviewed by the news. Ansley is a Jiu Jitsu competitor that is constantly saying funny things and if she wasn't such a jock she'd be one of those white chicks with dirty feet and a crystal collection. Together, they are the Two Jacked Bros!    Each Guest gets the same 7 questions, with each question being associated with opening a different Chakra from the bottom up:   Root Chakra- How did you learn to overcome fear?  Pelvis Chakra- Who, what, or where deserves an apology from you? Gut Chakra- How do you overcome disappointment? Heart Chakra- What have you learned from grief? Throat Chakra- What is your favorite lie to tell? Third Eye Chakra- What are two things you used to see as separate but now realize they are the same? Crown Chakra- What is something you can't give up and why?
