Looking back on 2017, it's hard not to feel nostalgic about the immense growth and learning that happened during About Progress's first full year as a podcast. As I opened up behind the mic, it was a year where I stepped into the world of podcasting more confidently, juggling both personal and professional challenges. From interviewing new voices like Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife to pushing myself in ways I hadn't anticipated, it was a time of intense learning and adaptation. Fast forward to now, it's wild to think about how the lessons of 2017 have influenced the trajectory of my life and work. It's a reminder that dreams do require work, but they are also what make the journey so deeply fulfilling and worth every moment. In this candid "Working on Things" episode, Monica shares her 10 personal goals for 2026 as she approaches her 40th birthday. You'll hear about her complicated relationship with goal-setting, ways she makes goals doable but motivating, and how she's learning to celebrate milestones instead of bouncing right over them. Monica also gets real about the challenges: feeling like two ships passing in the night with her husband, struggling with tech boundaries while running a business, the endless cycle of high-conflict children, and the weight of launching a book on a shoestring budget. But she also shares what's lighting her up—her hobby year (including returning to ballet!), plans for adventures, and her word of the year: reclamation. Listen if you: Want to hear an honest take on goal-setting that isn't about hustle culture Are navigating the chaos of responsibilities and trying to feel like your life is your own Need permission to do goals differently—broader, more flexible, more human Are approaching a milestone birthday and want to make it meaningful Appreciate messy, real conversations about personal growth This isn't a polished how-to. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Cedric Howard about a topic that resonates deeply with many moms in our community: returning to school later in life. Dr. Howard shared powerful stories from his own family, illustrating the generational impact of pursuing higher education. We talked about the importance of embracing your role as a mom in the classroom and how those experiences can be your greatest asset, not a hindrance. Our conversation left me with a profound realization: education is not just for personal growth but can transform family legacies. If you've ever considered going back to school, take this as your sign to explore the possibilities. The journey may require some adjustments, but as Dr. Howard emphasized, it's okay to be a little selfish with your education after years of being selfless. If you're ready to take that step, start by telling your story and showcasing the resilience and skills motherhood has instilled in you. In a recent coaching call with Janie, a mother navigating the shift from a professional career as a social worker to a stay-at-home mom, we delved into the deep-seated challenges that accompany such a monumental transition. Janie, like many, found herself yearning for personal connection and a sense of self amid the continuous tasks of motherhood. Throughout our discussion, we addressed practical strategies to help Janie reclaim her identity while embracing her chosen responsibilities as a mother. By exploring pressure-free mindset shifts and grounding habits, Janie is starting to balance self-care with motherhood. The journey towards progress involves small, consistent steps, focusing on what resonates personally rather than rigid routines. Join Monica and Taylor for a thoughtful (and surprisingly layered!) chat about the "not like other girls" conundrum. What started as a casual comment during recording turned into a fascinating exploration of how we as women pit ourselves against each other—and for what? In this episode, we unpack: The origins of the "not like other girls" trope and how it shows up in our lives Our own experiences with feeling pressure to either stand out OR fit in (spoiler: we had opposite journeys!) How this connects to mommy wars, feminism, and those impossible gender roles we're all trying to navigate Why Gen Z might actually be doing this better than we did The beautiful messiness of self-acceptance Plus: We get real about raising daughters, the cafeteria-style approach to life choices, and why "let people like what they like" might be the most important phrase ever. Bottom line? We're all just humans having individual experiences. The sooner we accept ourselves (and each other), the better off we'll all be. In keeping with something I've done on the podcast for a few years now, I'm thrilled to share with you my Do Something List for 2026. This list isn't about setting strict goals, but prioritizing daily fulfillment. Each item on the list encourages me to honor my interests and passions, from baking something new monthly to hosting girls' nights and rediscovering hobbies like sketching wildflowers. This year, I aim to explore cultural events, reconnect with nature on new hikes, and even venture out for some out-of-state adventures. Each act on the list helps sustain my mental health and well-being while I continue to encourage others to pursue their unique paths to personal growth. Thanks for listening, and I hope you feel inspired to create your own list. Monica's DSL for 2026! Life can feel overwhelmingly chaotic, and I've often found myself needing help to navigate through it. During these tumultuous times, I've learned that small, consistent habits are crucial. By embracing habits that are personal, seasonal, and flexible, I can help myself feel more grounded and less overwhelmed. Recently, my life has been filled with professional demands like editing a book and preparing for a conference, all while managing the complexities of family life. To cope, I've been playing the piano more often—it's a soothing escape that helps me reset my mind. I've also focused on maintaining strict boundaries with my time, like adhering to a rhythm schedule for work and home. Weekends are for unwinding with family, not for catching up on work tasks. By prioritizing rest and personal interests, I can show up as my best self, not in spite of challenges, but because of them. This episode is a “Remember When,” a monthly episode to honor About Progress turning 10 years old. Looking back at 2016, I'm filled with a mix of nostalgia and awe at the start of my journey with About Progress. That year marked the beginning of a new chapter, not just for my blog and podcast, but for my personal growth. My first foray into blogging, followed by launching the podcast in November, was a leap into the unknown, full of technical challenges and self-doubt, yet it ignited a passion for creating a community based on real, unvarnished stories. Today, as I look back to where it all began, I'm proud of the progress and the supportive community we've built, proving that life truly is about progress, not perfection. Navigating the labyrinth of personal finance can often feel overwhelming, especially with societal pressures and the constant barrage of advice from various "experts." I myself have struggled with the anxiety of managing budgets and feeling as though I'm constantly missing the mark. Thankfully, Rebecca Palmer, a seasoned financial advisor, has shared insights that have reframed the way I view money. She highlighted that much of the stress stems not from personal failure, but from the systems that aren't designed to work with our unique lifestyles. In this episode we learn how to shift focus from attempting to perfect rigid systems to creating personalized systems that truly support our financial goals, leading to a more peaceful and grounded financial life. What if joy in marriage isn't about chasing happiness, but embracing courage? Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife's enlightening perspective reshapes our understanding of joy—not as mere happiness but as a deeper, more embodied openness to love and goodness, even amidst life's challenges. This kind of joy is interwoven with eros love—an expansive, soul-reaching connection that pushes us beyond our comfort zones and into a realm of growth and self-discovery. In my conversation with Dr. Finlayson-Fife, we explored how marriage becomes a fertile ground for joy—not by eliminating our differences but by choosing to love through them. By asking ourselves what we already know we need to do differently, we unlock the potential for profound personal growth and deeper marital intimacy, ultimately steering our relationships toward genuine joy. As I sat glued to the couch with my flu-stricken voice, I found myself reflecting on my goals for 2026 with unexpected waves of fear and overwhelm. Goals and I have had a complicated history; they once defined my life, yet I stepped away from them for nearly a decade. However, the Do Something List, born from a need to explore rather than achieve, has become an anchor in my life. Looking back at 2025, I marvel at how this list has helped me stay grounded through another transformative year. As we approach 2026, I'm filled with hope and anticipation. There's so much ahead—turning 40, the podcast's 10th anniversary, and a book launch, among other things. My focus for the year is to embrace rest and hobbies, ensuring my Do Something List reflects these needs. Join me as we embark on this year of growth and exploration together! For years, I battled with the idea that being ambitious made me appear too eager and self-serving. But I've learned that real ambition should ebb and flow, much like nature itself. It's okay to redefine ambition as a desire for more life, while also allowing ourselves periods of rest and recalibration. From my discussion with Amina AlTai, it's clear that ambition must be intentional and aligned with our true values. Releasing the need for perfection and instead embracing recovery and personal growth has been transformative. I've seen firsthand that our bodies often signal when our ambitions are misaligned, acting as guides toward a more sustainable path. As we lean into our strengths and gifts, let's transform ambition from a toxic force into a purposeful journey that expands our lives and those around us. Learn more from Amina and get her book HERE. In this conversation with Kolbie Blume, we explored how embracing imperfection can lead to deeper fulfillment in our creative pursuits. We discussed the concept of focusing on tiny moments of wonder rather than the final product, highlighting that the magic lies in the process, not the outcome. Our chat reminded me of the importance of investing in oneself and making room for personal joys, despite the everyday trade-offs and responsibilities that often overshadow our own needs. Rediscovering hobbies and allowing ourselves to be beginners opens doors to joy and self-acceptance. It's about learning to prioritize ourselves on our list of responsibilities, exploring creativity without fear, and finding joy in the messiness of life. Remember, it's not about achieving perfection but about valuing the process and the personal growth that comes with immersing yourself in something you love, just as it is. Through this interview and my personal journey, I realized that being messy is, indeed, part of the magic. Celebrate 9 years of About Progress by submitting to our annual Favorite Things Giveaway! In a recent podcast episode, I walked through my quest to rediscover personal interests and prioritize them amid the whirlwind of daily life. Like many women, I'm navigating the busy demands of motherhood and work while yearning for outlets that are just for me—without needing them to be productive or result in a tangible outcome. I realize that it's not always easy to carve out these moments, but it's becoming clear that hobbies are more than a want—they're a need. The challenge lies in making the time without feeling guilty for setting aside the never-ending list of tasks. I'm committing to at least try, even if it means re-prioritizing my weekends. If you're in a similar boat, I invite you to join me in this journey of self-discovery and openly puzzle through the “how” alongside me. After all, stepping into hobbies is an investment in ourselves, a way to find joy amidst the busyness, and maybe even a step towards easing the funks we sometimes fall into. In my latest episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Kathie Gwilliam about how gratitude can play a pivotal role in our personal development and self-improvement. We delved into the sneaky nature of comparison and how it can erode our self-worth, leading to unhappiness. But Kathie presented simple, actionable steps on how to be happier by shifting our mindset towards gratitude. By acknowledging our own unique gifts and appreciating others for their strengths, we can stop being perfectionists and enhance our daily habits for a more fulfilling life. I've always emphasized the beauty and sustainability of small daily habits for self-improvement. But occasionally, our self-care journey demands a more significant leap to reboot our personal development. On this episode I shared how my recent solo trip to London was a radical act of self-care for me. It's essential to recognize that personal growth and development sometimes require us to stretch beyond our comfort zones, reminding ourselves of our own self-worth and the importance of self-care. These experiences, whether starting daily habits or planning an adventure abroad, define how to stop being a perfectionist and enrich our journeys toward how to feel happy. So, my call to you is straightforward: consider your own big step in self-care—it's time to reclaim, reconnect, and embrace your true self. It's easy to see your partner as the problem when things feel unfair—but often, the patterns we feel stuck in are ones we've unwittingly helped create. In this NEW episode, Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife joins Monica Packer of the About Progress podcast to talk about what it means to be a thoughtful change maker in your relationship. They explore how to recognize when you've been over-accommodating—and how avoiding conflict or ignoring your own desires can quietly erode both your well-being and the strength of the partnership. Dr. Finlayson-Fife teaches that change begins by owning your role in the current dynamic—and using that clarity to engage in honest, collaborative conversations with your partner.
