Phillip Cooke, a pilot for Air Transport International (ATI), shares his journey from flight simulation enthusiast to professional aviator. Growing up with a passion for aviation, inspired by his father, he started with a PVC pipe yoke before diving into flight simulators. He earned his private pilot license and attended ATP Flight School in Long Beach, CA. His career path took him through flying the PC-12 for a small charter company, then the Cessna Caravan 208, before moving on to SkyWest. Before completing training at SkyWest, an opportunity at ATI arose, leading him to fly the Boeing 757/767 for Prime Air cargo operations. Beyond real-world flying, Phillip is deeply involved in VR-based flight simulation, investing in a high-end setup to stay sharp. He discusses how flight sim technology is an invaluable tool for pilots, offering realistic training at a fraction of the cost of real-world flying. He also participates in online multiplayer ATC environments, simulating real-world airline operations, including long-haul FedEx routes with real NOTAMs and weather conditions. Welcome to your weekly news update, we have 4 stories for you this week, Amazon loses Head of Safety and Flight operations, FAA and NASA conduct UTM Field Test, Skyebrowse introduces pay-per-model, and the FPVFC releases a FRIA map. Your first story this week is Amazon, who keeps losing people. Sean Cassidy, the head of Safety, flight operations, and regulatory affairs has reportedly left the company. Cassidy, a former Alaska Airlines Pilot, joined Amazon in 2015 to assist Prime Air through the process of obtaining FAA approvals. Amazon received their Part 135 certificate in August of 2020, and deliveries began this year. Over the last year, amazon has had a number of lay-offs including one in January and has lost a number of key players. Amazon hasn't released any statement or status on their deliveries in the past few months, but we'll keep you updated if we see any updates. Next up this week is the FAA and NASA, who have conducted a UTM field test. If you're unfamiliar with the concept of unmanned traffic management, it's a system that allows a UAS operator to reserve a portion of the airspace for a particular time. These “reservations” would assist with deconfliction between UAS traveling at or below 400' in uncontrolled airspace. The test included flights of varying complexity levels, verifying standards, evaluating UTM systems, testing FAA integration with USS, and testing the real world application of all these systems working with ones another. Data collected from the UTM field test is expected to be used by policymakers to enable low-altitude operations, particularly those that will operate beyond line of sight. If you'd like to read the full report, we'll add a link in the description! Third up this week is Skyebrowse, who is now offering a pay-per model version of their software! Models start at just $3 per model and vary based on the size of the video file. Pay per models will allow you to unlock features, such as download or measurements, that are not available in the “freemium” subscription plan. This works with older models, and we were able to use a model from 2021 and access these tools! Alright, and last up this week is a map of FRIAs! Due to the UAS Facility maps not containing information about FRIA, Alex Suarez has created a map that contains the locations of approved FRIAs. The map is color coded to differentiate between the 4 CBOs, and for FPVFC, FTCA, and STEMC FRIAs, has precise boundaries. Great job Alex! Alright, that's all we've got, have a great week and we'll see you on Monday for the live! Last week, I was on vacation and @wolfpack4694 asked the team if they would do a video talking about how mean I am. The thing is, I'm really not mean, so they had to make stuff up, and let's just say they had a little too much fun with it. Take a look, enjoy! https://www.skyebrowse.com/blog/2023/12/12/introducing-pay-per-model https://www.faa.gov/uas/advanced_operations/traffic_management/UFT-Final-Report.pdf https://www.faa.gov/uas/research_development/traffic_management/field_test https://dronexl.co/2023/12/07/faa-nasa-utm-field-test/ https://dronexl.co/2023/12/12/prime-air-shakeup-cassidy-amazon-exit/ https://www.friamap.com/
Amazon will soon make prescription drugs fall from the sky when the e-commerce giant becomes the latest company to test drone deliveries for medications. The company said that customers in College Station, Texas, can now get prescriptions delivered by a drone within an hour of placing their order. The drone, programmed to fly from a delivery center with a secure pharmacy, will travel to the customer's address, descend to a height of about four meters — or 13 feet — and drop a padded package. Amazon says customers will be able to choose from more than 500 medications, a list that includes common treatments for conditions like the flu or pneumonia, but not controlled substances. The company's Prime Air division began testing drone deliveries of common household items last December in College Station and Lockeford, California. Amazon spokesperson Jessica Bardoulas said the company has made thousands of deliveries since launching the service, and is expanding it to include prescriptions based in part on customer requests. Amazon announced it will also launch drone delivery at a third U.S. location and cities in Italy and the United Kingdom by the end of next year. The company said it will disclose the exact locations in the coming months. Amazon Prime already delivers some medications from the company's pharmacy within two days. But pharmacy Vice President John Love said that doesn't help someone with an acute illness like the flu. “What we're trying to do is figure out how can we bend the curve on speed,” he said. Amazon Pharmacy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vin Gupta says the U.S. healthcare system generally struggles with diagnosing and treating patients quickly for acute illnesses, something that was apparent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Narrowing the window between diagnosis and treating makes many treatments more effective, he said. Amazon also unveiled a new drone called MK30 that, by the end of next year, will replace the drones it currently uses to deliver packages. The company says the new drone flies further, is smaller and quieter, and also has enhanced delivery capabilities. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The idea of 'a machine that thinks' dates back to ancient Greece times, but since the advent of electronic computing and the overwhelming amount of data generated by the human race in the last 50 years, the realisation of intelligent machines that can think like humans has been almost tangible. In 1950 Alan Turing published his seminal work Computing Machinery and Intelligence. In the paper, Turing proposed to answer the question "Can machines think?" and introduced the Turing Test to determine if a computer could demonstrate the same intelligence as a human. In 1956 John McCarthy coined the term 'artificial intelligence' at the first-ever AI conference at Dartmouth College saying Artificial intelligence, " …is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable." Today, there is a great deal of hype surrounding AI systems and intelligent machine development, which is of course to be expected of any new emerging technology. But what exactly is AI and what does it mean for the world of mechanical engineering? In this I2I podcast special, Helen speaks with Neil Lawrence and Alan King about what AI and machine learning is all about, what their uses will be, and how engineers will benefit from using these systems in their working environments. Professor Neil Lawrence is the inaugural DeepMind Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge, Senior AI Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute, and Visiting Professor of Machine Learning, University of Sheffield. He received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southampton in 1994 and spent his early career as a field engineer on oil rigs in the North Sea. He has been working on machine learning models for over 20 years and recently returned to academia after three years as Director of Machine Learning at Amazon where he worked on deploying machine learning solutions for Prime Air, Alexa and the Amazon supply chain. Alan King is Head of Global Membership Strategy at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He joined IMechE as a Business Development Executive in 2004 with a background in both engineering and business. His father, both an engineer and joint owner of an engineering firm, introduced Alan to engineering at an early age and he then combined his fascination for the subject with an interest in business at university, studying for a Master's in International Business. As the Head of Global Membership Strategy, Alan supports the development of IMechE's comprehensive 5-year strategy. Collaborating with organisations worldwide, his team delivers exceptional support to IMechE members while crafting engaging membership marketing content for pivotal campaigns throughout the year. Alan is now focusing his attention on how Artificial Intelligence could enhance both member services and support staff in their everyday tasks within the IMechE. He also recently wrote a fascinating article for Institution News on the practical applications of AI and Machine Learning in the engineering sector. We're going to cover an example of what happens at low altitude when pilots activate the Take Off/Go Around or TOGA switch by mistake. When there's turbulence and a lack of situational awareness, this can be deadly as you'll hear. A number of aircraft recently have crashed because of pilots inadvertently activating this switch and I'm going to explain how this can happen if you're not paying attention – and if the crew are prone to panic. One of the incidents involved a cargo flight – and Herman who's an avid listener suggested I do a few cargo plane crashes for a number of reasons. While there are no passengers involved, or very few, sometimes the cargo itself is the danger, and in the case we'll hear this episode, it is believed that was a failure to check the stated credentials of a commercial pilot could have exacerbated the situation that led to the crash involving a Boeing 767 flown by Amazon's Prime Air. It never made it in on February 23rd 2019, the Boeing 767-375ER crashed on approach into Trinity Bay near Houston, killing two crew members and a pilot hitching a lift in the jump seat. It's also the first crash involving a 767-375ER Cargo plane. As you're going to hear, flight crew training issues at Atlas Air and across the U.S. commercial aviation industry have been implicated in this accident.

News: Serum from hibernating black bears boosts muscle mass in human cells | New Atlas (01:16) The incredible ability of bears to hibernate for months at a time has inspired some interesting lines of research around how their secrets might benefit human health, and among them is a focus on muscle wasting. First let's talk about bear hibernation: The main difference between hibernation and torpor is during torpor, the animal is able to wake up quickly to avoid danger, or if the opportunity exists, exit the den to feed. Hibernation is a voluntary state an animal enters to conserve energy, when food is scarce, and minimize exposure to the winter elements. During hibernation an animal lowers its body temperature, slows its breathing rate, heart rate, and metabolic rate-the rate its body uses energy. Bears technically do not hibernate, they enter a state similar to it called topor. Fun fact: Bears can sleep more than 100 days without eating, drinking, or passing waste! Bears can actually turn their pee into protein. Scientists in Japan have made a fascinating discovery in this space:Demonstrating how human muscle cells can be infused with serum from hibernating black bears to prevent atrophy and increase muscle mass. This new study focused on skeletal muscle, which is susceptible to wasting caused by immobility.Led by scientists at Hiroshima University and Hokkaido University The research team took cultured human skeletal muscle cells and infused them with serum drawn from the blood of hibernating black bears, which led to significant protein growth after 24 hours.Interestingly, serum collected during the bears' active summer season did not induce these same effects. Believe this is due to a factor in the hibernating bear serum that suppresses a "destruction mechanism" behind muscle degradation Study first-author Mitsunori Miyazaki, stated:“We have indicated that ‘some factor' present in hibernating bear serum may regulate protein metabolism in cultured human skeletal muscle cells and contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass … However, the identification of this 'factor' has not yet been achieved." Doing so could open up some exciting possibilities around protecting humans during deep space travel, or preventing muscle wastage in people who are immobile due to aging or disease. Alzheimer's Breakthrough: Genetic Link to Gut Disorders Confirmed | Neuroscience News (08:18) A world-first Edith Cowan University (ECU) study has confirmed the link between the two, which could lead to earlier detection and new potential treatments. The findings add to the evidence the gut-brain axis may play a role in the development of neurodegenerative disorders. Alzheimer's Disease (AD), has no known curative treatments and is expected to affect more than 82 million people and is estimated to cost US$2 trillion by 2030. The study analyzed large sets of genetic data from AD and several gut-disorder studies – each of about 400,000 people. The first comprehensive assessment of the genetic relationship between AD and multiple gut disorders. They discovered people with AD and gut disorders have genes in common – which is important for many reasons. Research lead Dr Emmanuel Adewuyi explains:“The study provides a novel insight into the genetics behind the observed co-occurrence of AD and gut disorders … This improves our understanding of the causes of these conditions and identifies new targets to investigate to potentially detect the disease earlier and develop new treatments for both types of conditions.” When researchers conducted further analysis into the shared genetics, they found other important links between AD and gut disorders – such as the role cholesterol may play. Dr Adewuyi provides context:“Whilst further study is needed into the shared mechanisms between the conditions, there is evidence high cholesterol can transfer into the central nervous system, resulting in abnormal cholesterol metabolism in the brain… For example, elevated cholesterol in the brain has been linked to brain degeneration and subsequent cognitive impairment.” The research also indicated diet could play a part in treating and preventing AD and gut disorders. There is a need for more studies and patients need to be assessed individually to judge whether they would benefit from cholesterol lower medication use. This solar tower makes jet fuel from sunbeams, water, and gas | PopSci (14:43) For the past several years, researchers from several different institutions in Switzerland and Germany have been using it to test a method to create propellantnormally a carbon-intensive process involving fossil fuels They use little more than sunlight and greenhouse gasses captured from the atmosphere. What happens inside their tower is a bit of chemistry known as the Fischer-Tropsch process.A collection of chemical reactions that converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen or water gas into liquid hydrocarbons. These reactions occur in the presence of metal catalysts Typically at temperatures of 150–300 °C (302–572 °F) Pressures of one to several tens of atmospheres. So what does this structure tucked away in a Madrid suburb actually do?169 solar reflectors concentrate blinding sunlight —on average, 2,500 times brighter than the sun— to the top of a tower. It hits a porous ceramic box made from cerium, the rare-earth element number 58 That draws water and carbon dioxide from the air and splits their atoms into hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide. The newly created gasses sink to the bottom of the tower, where they enter a shipping container that carries out the Fischer-Tropsch reactions. The end result is fossil-fuel-free kerosene, produced by pulling carbon dioxide from the air. The researchers say it can be pumped into fuel tanks, today, without issue. According to Aldo Steinfeld, an engineer at ETH Zürich in Switzerland, meeting the entire aviation's sector would require solar kerosene plants to cover an area of around 17,500 square miles, roughly the size of Estonia. That's large!!! Steinfeld looks at it differently: A relatively small parcel of a sparsely inhabited hot desert could supply all the world's planes. The next steps are to make the process more efficient. Right now, a meager 4.1 percent of the solar energy striking the ceramic box actually goes into making gas. The researchers think they could considerably boost that number. Prime Air: Amazon officially rolls out drone delivery to customers | ZDNet (21:06) After years of development announcements, Amazon will be rolling out delivery by drone for Prime customers in areas of California and Texas.Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas. Amazon will join Walmart in offering limited drone delivery to a subset of customers, signaling a vote of confidence in the technology and a shifting regulatory environment from the two behemoth retailers. The service, called Prime Air, will deliver packages up to five pounds in less than an hour using drones. Fly up to 50 miles per hour (80km/hour), up to an altitude of 400ft, and can carry packages of up to 5lbs. Created a proprietary sense-and-avoid system that enables Amazon drones to operate at greater distances while safely and reliably avoiding other aircraft, people, pets, and obstacles. Amazon is reaching out to customers in both locations to give them an option to receive free and fast drone delivery on what's billed as the largest selection of items ever to be available for drone delivery.Once onboarded, customers will see Prime Air-eligible items on Amazon Place an order as they normally would and receive an estimated arrival time The service will start later this year. Despite the limited rollout, the company's long-term vision is to create a drone delivery service that will scale and integrate into its vast fulfillment network. Naturally, there's a lot more riding on these drones.A crash or injury involving an Amazon drone will receive heavy scrutiny. End it off with the end of Amazon's press release:“We're bringing more than drone delivery to Lockeford and College Station. Through these Prime Air drone deliveries, we will create new jobs, build partnerships with local organizations, and help to reduce the impact of climate change on future generations.” A brain-computer startup beat Elon Musk's Neuralink to implanting its first device in a US patient | Yahoo (26:02) Synchron, a brain-computer interface startup, reportedly implanted its first device in a US patient earlier this month — overtaking Elon Musk's Neuralink for the third time. The startup implanted a 1.5-inch device into the brain of an ALS patient at Mount Sinai West medical center in New York on July 6 The purpose of the device is to allow the patient to communicate — even after they have lost the ability to move — by using their thoughts to send emails and texts. Should mention this company has already implanted the device in four patients in Australia who have been able to use the brain implant to send messages on WhatsApp and shop online. Last year, the Australia-based startup received permission from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin human trials on six US patients who have been severely paralyzed.Neuralink has yet to receive FDA approval Synchon and Neuralink's implants have similar immediate applications. translate human thoughts into computer commands could help patients with neurological diseases like Parkinson's or ALS. Neuralink and Synchron's products have several key differences: namely, size and installation. Synchron's device can be inserted into a human skull without cutting into it using a catheter, and the process requires two separate surgeries In contrast, Neuralink plans to make a much smaller and more powerful device that would require a portion of the individual's skull to be removed and would be performed using a robot ----more---- Social: Email Me: adam@thatscoolnew.com Twitter: @Thats_Cool_News

Satellite images show Russian officials visiting Iran twice with Shahed-191 and Shahed-129 drones on display and in flight. DJI reportedly making headway against US drone blacklist legislation The Financial Times reports the DJI has been pushing back at the American Security Drone Act (ASDA). That act would prohibit U.S. federal funding from being used to buy Chinese drones, broaden the bans, and make it difficult for a ban to be rescinded. Notably, the bill was not retained in the National Defense Authorization Act passed by the House. Nevertheless, several Republican representatives vowed to make the ASDA law in a final version, or on its own.
One of the most useful Tweets I've seen in a long time was published over thew weekend by @G_S_Bhogal - in 40 Tweets he explained 40 useful concepts he thinks we should know about..and these are amazing. From the laws of science to problem solving, how to handle trolls and beating procrastination and why powerful people lose their grip of reality - it's an incredible read. Check it out, on the hashtag DigitalMinuteUK. Twitter itself once again faces an uncertain future as Elon Musk's proposed takeover deal looks entirely dead. The 2 sides couldn't come to any sort of agreement about the number of fake accounts on the platform. My opinion is that Musk's 44 billion dollar takeover was a gross over valuation of what the company is actually worth. Up until now, anyone using Meta's virtual reality platform had to use it via a Facebook account. That rule is being ditched from next month, putting some distance between Meta and the Facebook brand. Amazon is to start using electric vans and e cargo bikes to make deliveries in Central London - the new vehicles will work out a central hub and be used for the final mile of deliveries, eventually this will spread across the UK. In America the company is moving ahead with its planned Drone deliveries - Prime Air will take to the skies to deliver packages in Lockeford, California later this year.

This week in drone news, Amazon has apparently been telling the FAA not to investigate drone crashes as they are investigating, a new defense/public safety drone, and a large crop-spraying drone crash in California. It appears that Prime Air has been avoiding FAA crash investigations by claiming the company has the authority to conduct its own investigations At least twice, FAA inspectors have found that Amazon has moved crash evidence and/or inhibited an investigation. At least 8 Amazon drones crashed last year, one sparking a 20 acre wildfire in Oregon. Amazon said that regulatory delays could “Totally Disrupt” the goal timeline of launching Prime Air delivery in 2024. Amazon responded by stating that the company has"has complied with all incident reporting, investigation, and other applicable regulatory requirements," the spokesperson, Kelly Nantel, said. "Over the last seven years, the FAA has never taken an enforcement action against Prime Air, and has awarded us an air carrier certificate to enable commercial deliveries — showing that our comprehensive process has met the FAA's high bar.” https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-air-faa-regulators-investigation-drone-crashes-2022-5 A California Start up named “Realtime Robotics” has released a portable heavy lift drone that they say beats competitors in terms of situational awareness for first responders. The Hera is a backpack-sized drone with a payload capacity of 30lbs and can be outfitted with up to 4 EO/IR cameras. The aircraft can be tethered or untethered with a flight time of 46minutes with a 5lb payload. Realtime Robotics also says the Hera is NDAA compliant. On today's show we are talking about getting ahead of demand. We have seen many businesses anticipate continuing growth and no changes to market conditions. It happens in virtually every Industry. Even the most analytical companies in the world can get it wrong. We saw several retail giants experience adverse conditions in the past quarter. Walmart, Target and Amazon were the most visible of these announcements. Amazon surprised Wall Street with its first quarterly loss since 2015. That happens when expenses exceed revenues. So how did Amazon get it wrong? Did they hire too many people? Did they make too many financial commitments? The company has been expanding quickly making investments in expanding their fleet of aircraft with their growing captive airline called Prime Air. They have been growing their network of distribution warehouses and fulfilment centres all over the world. Some of these facilities are company owned, but in fact many are leased from developers who built these giant buildings to Amazon specifications. It seems that Amazon's construction of fulfillment warehouses has gotten ahead of current demand. Amazon spooked investors last month after reporting slowing growth and a weak profit outlook that it attributed to overbuilding during the pandemic when homebound shoppers stormed online. At the end of 2021, Amazon leased 370 million square feet of industrial space in its home market, twice as much as it had two years earlier. ---------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

Joe Reichsfeld returns as we get into the data of the increases in cargo and FC's space in the last 12+ months. The sheer numbers of locations and expansion of both FC's and Hubs is mind boggling. Beyond Amazon’s retail rivals, the mass opening of small, quick-delivery warehouses poses a significant threat to United Parcel Service and the U.S. Postal Service. Amazon.com Inc.’s Prime Air fleet will grow nearly fourfold to about 200 planes within the next few years. What does this mean for Amazon Sellers? Today we pick apart the data and look to understand where the puck is going.

A slew of post-convention polling has come out and it shows that both candidates have emerged roughly where they were before. Joe Biden still maintains a lead, but President Trump has gained a little bit of ground in certain state polls. One of the next big moments that could impact the race comes at the end of September when the first debates are held. Steven Shepard, chief polling analyst at Politico, joins us for more. Next, America is running low on a crucial resource for coronavirus vaccines and drugs…monkeys. The pandemic has created a huge demand for monkeys as research test subjects. There has been a drop in supply from China which supplied 60% of monkeys imported into the U.S., and we were already dealing with decreased numbers. Sarah Zhang, writer at the Atlantic, joins us for how were are short on these animals needed for research. Finally, Amazon is one step closer to delivering you that package by drone. The FAA just granted them approval to operate its fleet of delivery drones, a program they call “Prime Air.” Their drone would be capable of delivering cargo that is lighter than 5 pounds hopefully in about 30 minutes. Rob Verger, associate editor at Popular Science, joins us for the latest and why it still might be some time before you see drones flying everywhere. Use Cases & The Current Opportunities & Realities of DRONES and Drone video footage Today we are DIGGING IN further to the state and opportunity of DRONES. As I explained in Ep 15 the Drone market is growing to 129.23 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The Drone market is growing on an extremely HUGE projectory! The FAA reports that there are guess how many registered drones in the US? 1.6 Million, 442,000 of which are used for Commercial. Many pilots own more than one drone it’s worth noting. The fastest growth comes from businesses and civil governments. It is overall impacting a vast majority of industries: Drones are becoming a part of business in Construction, INsurace, Oil & Gas, Police or Fire Force, The Coastguard, Journalism, Customs or Boarder Protection, Real Estate (which I reference specific use cases in both residential and commercial in a bit), Utilities, Energy, Cinematogrpahy (movies which is how many of us think of Drone footage - which is at a 21MILL industry alone – bottom of the $$ projection list hey!) In this episode I also share follow up on My journey to becoming a certified remote pilot of an unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV and the growing Drone market and what it can mean for YOUR business! For these flying objects - There are some very interesting uses cases being developed. There are unlimited use cases that are virtually untouched. 1 of the more obvious and talked about is delivery. The FAA is encouraging innovation in package delivery and is organized to facilitate it with industry, local, state and tribal entities. There is a five phase certification process that companies who want to incorporate a package delivery service. Traditionally, we’ve had UPS, FedEx, The United States Postal Service (where I still have to wait in line to get a package mailed), Uber Eats transports food to our homes and workplaces. On September 27, 2019, UPS Flight Forward conducted its first package delivery by drone with its part 135 certification when it flew medical supplies at WakeMed's hospital campus in Raleigh, NC. Allow me to introduce you (if you haven’t seen it) to a social media post (on Twitter) about a Drone experience serving a customer with excellence! He an Aerospace Ocean Engineering professor. He posted a video of receipt of a store order via a drone while his dog looked upon this odd machine dropping it down into his back yard. His Twitter handle is Shane Ross @RossDynamicsLab Professor @VirginiaTechAOE Aerospace & Ocean Engineering Apr 10 2020 he posted, Drone delivery to me & my dog at home. My 8-month-old Labrador was unperturbed by the drone, but curious and eager to go fetch the package (dog food?). The delivery was from Walgreens via @Wing , & arrived 5 minutes after placing the order. #logistics #dronedelivery #covid19 #dogs Now Grocery Drone Delivery Speaking of Wing! Bloomberg reported that Wing, which is Alphabets Drone delivery service, is seeing a big increase in orders in the Christiansburg, VA pilot program it has been running since the Fall of 2019. In fact, demand has doubled since Covid 19. Wing partnered with FedEx and Wallgreens to send household essentials to local residents . They even now have added a local bakery and coffee shop! To expand offerings during the Pandemic. This drone pilot on YouTube, Dmitri Marian, reversed engineered coffee delivery – during Quarantine because of Covid19 from his home, ordered a cup of coffee from his local Starbucks and flew his drone that had upgraded antenaes, TO Starbucks, they put his coffee in a bucket attached to the drone and he flew it back. Dude! Take a listen and I put the link to the video in the show notes if you want to see it. It He posted another one on both YouTube TikTok where he orders a cup of coffee from McDonalds. If you want to watch it and you’re on TikTok he is @dmitritv There is still a lot to figure out before we will see multiple brands doing this….having to do with regulation and safety. Prime Air with Amazon is coming, you may have heard. It will be a service that will deliver packages under 5 lbs in 30 min or less. Prime Air has development centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, France and Israel. We are testing the vehicles in multiple international locations. The link in the show notes has a few videos – quite entertaining and humorous videos, where Amazon helps you understand how what they call “a miracle of modern technology” will help you understand the conveniences it will offer you and imagine under what circumstances you will be able to use it! Your child has a soccer game, the dog at one of her soccer cleats – Amazon Prime Air to the rescue! Dominos Pizza has been investing in automous delivery for a few years now. They tested drone delivery but the automous car will be released first as they have partnered with start up mini manless self driving car, Nuro. The little bug like cars drive up to 25 mph. Dominos announced their partnership in 2019. I have the link to a video featuring the car and the service in the show notes. The service is limited to customers who place online orders in Houston, and they deployed its grocery delivery service in Houston in March. Nuro’s partnership with Domino’s initially will be limited to a single location and will begin in the fall. “We are always looking for new ways to innovate and evolve the delivery experience for our customers,” Kevin Vasconi, Domino’s executive vice president and chief information officer, said in a statement released by the company. Quoting again, “Nuro’s vehicles are specially designed to optimize the food delivery experience, which makes them a valuable partner in our autonomous vehicle journey." "The opportunity to bring our customers the choice of an unmanned delivery experience, and our operators an additional delivery solution during a busy store rush, is an important part of our autonomous vehicle testing,” the statement added. Now you are Visualizing your product being placed on a Drone. Or let’s back up – how can the order even be placed for Drone delivery? I encourage you to to consider text …I talk about this in an upcoming episode with a barbeque restaurant who is DOMINATING this! If you’re a restaurant owner, please hear me on this. Text ordering will help you. I plan to release that episode explaining it all next week. So! Onto Use Cases in the Medical field Matternet M2 Parcel Delivery Drone Matternet is the world’s leading technology platform for on-demand drone delivery in urban environments. They specialize in very fast accurate delivery of medical items such as blood samples between locations inside of healthcare or hospital systems. Their drones can carry up to 4.4 lbs and travel twelve and half miles within 30 minutes. This benefits both patients (customers) and the healthcare efficiencies and man hour costs. A company called Dragonfly has created a model that from nearly 200 feet, their drones can detect several coronavirus symptoms, including fever, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. So if one of these drones (you’re standing out on the street) detects Coronavirus of someone else who has the virus you might be glad. You might be glad if it were you! Or some might feel this is an invasion of my privacy. I don’t know….it’s so new. It’s in similar vein of regulating wearing masks – at the time of this recording, states like Massachusetts and NY, NJ and many others are all fining citizens when they are out of their homes without masks on their faces. I don’t live in one of those states right now. There are phenomenal Use cases for Residential and Commercial REAL ESTATE There are results floating around the web claiming that Listings that feature drone photography and videography sell 68% faster! Well a Company called SoldbyAir conducted their own study to be sure of that data, and they report that 83% of home owners prefer to work with an agent who uses drone videography to feature their home. They also found that high volume agents meaning those that are more successful I guess you could say, selling more homes, or spending more time on the craft – they use aerial footage 3.5x more often than lower volume real estate agents. Which I thought was really interesting. The footage can be used (the drone footage) for real estate on the listing platforms like Zillow as well as formatted to social media platforms. Apartments, townhomes and senior living homes can be viewed from a buyers home. Which is really convenient, and experiential, you know what I mean? They feel like whoa – there’s music and they start feeling like they are seeing it face to face. For Commercial developers, instead of looking at outdated Google Maps, current drone footage informs a purchase consideration or project preparation. There’s also something called, Orthomosaic Mapping which is stitched together drone footage that provides a high resolution piece of gigantic perhaps hundreds of acres of property with extreme precision, accuracy and detail. Commercial realtors know that the maps are a crucial piece to closing on a deal – and these deals are most often very large in price. The maps – particularly video – help engage the emotional connection to the property. It helps the realtor demonstrate the market expertise and opportunities of the special area transitions between you know - the various spaces, roads, natural elements like trees etc. Very powerful! Jerry Inguagiato, friend of mine, Senior Vice President with CB Richard Ellis, which is a commercial real estate broker or agent, told me “it enhances the visual experience for my clients.” So he said that very confidently. It is a reality that a drone is yet another moving vehicle – thus the name, “unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV”. With that comes the inevitable accident or collision. My exam studies this week have covered many aspects of drone pilot safety knowledge so far. One, you cannot fly at night and there are very specific guidelines around when is considered night. When is it night? Do you know? They are very specific - How the pilot has to be within 3 statute miles of the drone from the control station a person standing at the control station of the small UAS must be able to see at a diagonal distance of 3 miles into the sky in order to detect other aircraft that may be approaching the area of operation So much like boat safety, there’s “see & avoid” laws and the pilot cannot be in a moving vehicle or aircraft while operating the drone. Meaning you can’t be driving something while you are operating the drone which sounds obvious but there are some wild risky people out there! So there’s rules around this pilot license. So with your business…there may or may not be something that there is an application. But of all those industries that I listed, it isn’t even a whole set. These are the Questions Thinking of yourself - YOU as a consumer – is often how I urge people to think about it we are all consumers ourselves, put your self in the customers shoes which I know you do pretty much every day – ask will you get great benefits?? With Covid19 we are all needing grocery delivery at times…some of us are using that exclusively, some of us are blending – using it most of the time, while supplementing with “mini trips” and others are doing ONLY mini trips and no grocery order. So anyway, it’s just a mish mash of how people are going about it depending on their circumstances. But it’s transforming the industry as well as the customer experience. So what’s relevant to all of us today is Food – food delivery, restaurant experiences and grocery stores. And I want you to think about how can your business either have a dotted line to the food business or how can you learn from the essential food business customer experience? Because this is not just about beautiful videography right? It ‘s also about practicality, so it just depends on what it is. ….pause (music) Back to case uses - Another active use case is in Agriculture where our food sources are grown or harvested. Drones are saving time for farmers, ….they are being used for things like, scouting fields, discovering weeds and diseases that erode growth, they help identify things like water deficiencies! Important stuff to the Ag industry. Now there are 3rd party software that agriculture companies can purchase to create maps on the health of their crops. Why I highlight this is to connect the technology capability. The Drone is the capture device and with it, it can inform and VISUALIZE which can then be transmitted into data visualization software to help business owners see and understand realities, patterns, and insights. No matter what your business or industry is, what you can ask – ask yourself these questions: How can I help my customer better visualize my business or offerings? This relates to the video aspect, similar to the real estate examples I gave; What kind of insights can I discover in my business to improve my customer experience? This means discoveries from footage…or engagement or conversations from customer viewership; How many perspectives or discoveries can I make available to either my customer or my management team to help them make informed decisions? This is long term findings and patterns….throught long term patterns to be able to make changes. The Emotional Connection - We are going through the living experience of change with the growth of Drone use – both professionally and the hobbiests flying them….how do you FEEL about the buzz of Drones being around you? I am talking about the emotional or feelings you might have of them being being a part of our lives? Have you envisioned or FELT this becoming our new norm? I’ve listened to people share how they are very uncomfortable with Drones being around them. It’s weird now but do you think it will be like, “normal and fine” after we adjust and reap ongoing benefits? I’ll leave you with that. Thank you for being here once again. Please share it with anyone it might help in their business and let me know if you’d like anymore content like this around drones. I am going to continue to cover the topic through my journey to become a certified pilot myself. I have a little ways to go! But I am chipping away at it and I appreciate your support. Have a great rest of your day or evening.

Airing date: 05/22/2019 Intermittent Fasting - Microsoft Warning About Patches - Israel Responded To Hacking By Bombing Craig Peterson 0:00 Good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here, welcome, welcome. Hey, if you watch me on YouTube, or maybe you attend some of my classes, or you're one of my insiders that I do coaching with, you might have noticed that I have lost a quite a bit of fat. I'm going to say, not necessarily weight, I have lost weight. I've lost a lot, 30, 40 pounds. But I've also put on some muscle. And you might be wondering why and how. I've had quite a few people asked me that are, you know, getting security coaching from me. Well, I am doing something called intermittent fasting as well as my wife. My kids have been doing it. It has been just amazing for general health. So this morning, I was on with Ken and Matt, I guess Ken had disappeared during this segment. But he had been talking about doing some intermittent fasting a little earlier in the morning. And I was so I got in and I explained what I will learned about intermittent fasting and diabetes and various types of diseases, including cancer. Some Nobel Prize material that had been presented to a Nobel laureate just a few years ago, a major breakthrough in science of medicine. So I talked about that this morning. And of course, we got into all of our weekly stuff as well, including a major warning out this week about Microsoft and doing some of the updates. You know, should you, shouldn't you while we talked about that this morning as well. So here we go. And of course, you'll find all of this at http://CraigPeterson.com. Matt Gagnon 1:38 Again 7:38 on the WGAN Morning News with Ken and Matt. It is time to talk to our friend Craig Peterson. He joins us at this time every every Wednesday, and this is no exception of course. Craig, How are you this morning? Craig 1:53 Hey, I am doing great. You know, we got to talk about one of my favorite subjects you guys are talking about a little earlier today, too? Matt 2:01 Yes. What is that subject, sir? Craig 2:02 So my wife and I have been doing intermittent fasting for over a year now. And I've read seven books on the topic. I follow a doctor out of the University of Toronto really closely, Jason Fung and he's a doctor. He's been a kidney doctor for the all a very long time. And he was tired of all of his patients dying. And of basically one thing, right, the whole insulin problem, diabetes. And about three years ago, there was a Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to a Japanese researcher who discovered and really documented something called autophagy. And autophagy is the process whereby your cells repair themselves, but your body only repairs itself at one time. And that's when your fasting. So for instance, Matt, you know that you your mom probably told you time and time again, you got to get your sleep, right, give your body a chance to rest and repair. What are you not doing when you're sleeping? You're not eating? Right? And so it was really interesting to me, it started to click and so I read at least a half a dozen books on the topic and looked into the research, read some of the Nobel laureates writings on autophagy and follow Jason Fung who has been able to cure 1200 of his patients have diabetes, including the most severe types of diabetes. Now you got to be careful if you're diabetic, and you're thinking about fasting, intermittent fasting. Make sure you talk to your doctor. But with autophagy basically fixes almost everything. And then a side effect of it all is that you end up losing weight as well, and my wife and I, we've combined lost over 100 pounds over the last year, we are feeling better than I'm feeling better than I can remember in decades now. She is too, but it's absolutely amazing. So from a guy, you know, 10 years I was a volunteer paramedic, so I don't play a doctor on the radio. But I've read a lot about this, it's been very fascinating to me. And once you're trying to do is two things typically Ken. One is you want the results of autophagy, there's a study that just came out of Cambridge, about a month ago by a researcher saying basically, if you fast seven days a year, you it's almost impossible for you to get any type of cancer, because the autophagy clears those cells out of your body there. It's fascinating. You should research it. But taking your vitamins, it's still recommended to do that. Absolutely. But if you're eating less than about 500 calories a day, which you would be if all you took was your vitamins, you're on what's called a fasting mimicking diet. Now you got to be careful about restricting your calories because a calorie restricted diet causes other problems with your body and doesn't actually help with the fasting or the autophagy. What you're trying to do, bottom line here is stop the insulin reaction in your body. You want to slow that down. So eating anything like eating six meals a day, according to everything I've been reading and including what Dr. Fung has been talking about six meals a day is almost the worst thing you could possibly do. So don't snack. When you start out. Well, what we did for months with something called a 16. Eight fast, so we fasted for 16 hours a day. So if you finish your dinner at 6pm, 6am, the next day, there you got 12 hours with no snacks at all, you just drink water basically, or black coffee or tea, and then you don't eat until noon. So basically skip breakfast, you now have fasted for 16 hours and your body has had a chance to repair itself. It's fascinating stuff. After 24 hours of fasting, again, no food, no snacks, just some water and you know clear stuff, no sugars at all. After 24 hours, most of your immune system gets replaced. Your T cells, these white blood cells that protect you if they get rebuilt and replaced. And it's just fascinating, fascinating stuff. I read a bunch of scientific papers on this, as well as a whole bunch of books and studied some diets and things. Ken I absolutely love it. It is the easiest thing we have ever done from any sort of a diet. We've done, you know, bunches of them in the past, and they've all had various results for us. But this intermittent fasting thing has been amazing for us. Matt 6:59 Well, this is the health hour with Craig Peterson. And he's talking with us here talking about all things technology and health related. So let's actually turn our attention a little bit to the technology side of things, if you don't mind. So Microsoft is warning us that there is a gigantic monster evil, malevolent force out there, a computer bug, and we should pay attention to that. So tell us a little bit more about what this warning is. Craig 7:22 Yeah, I sent out another warning yesterday too, that was a Microsoft based one. But here's what happened. Intel, our friends member we have Intel processors CPUs in most of our computers. That's not true of your Samsung phone,Matt. It's not true of your iOS devices there Ken. But Intel processors, it's been found have another extremely major security vulnerability, I hate to have to say that again. And in order to completely block that computer vulnerability, you have to turn off something called hyperthreading, and that causes a 40% performance penalty. So we've got Apple's, Cook is very very, very upset with Intel right now, it's going to cause some more tensions between the two companies. Microsoft released patches for this, as has Apple, all the major manufacturers have released patches for this Intel bug. You will notice your machine will slow down afterwards. But I've got to warn you because Microsoft had 19 severe rated patches that they released this week. You know the Patch Tuesday thing. Be very careful because it breaks machines that are running so folks antivirus as well as some other software out there. So if you have not applied the Microsoft patches from this month's set of patches, don't do them. My Microsoft is calling them a monster computer bug. This is very big. And the likelihood that you're going to get nailed by it right now is kind of low. So be careful, Microsoft issued a warning that they are causing what's called the blue screen of death on Windows computers. So this is one time, you probably don't want to apply the patches quite yet. But you're definitely going to want to apply them. Matt 9:21 We're talking to Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us on Wednesdays at this time to go over what's happening in the world of technology. And Craig, Equifax got a data breach of course and a lot of their customers information was was taken and there's some huge data breach there whatnot. Apparently that has cost them dearly. Cash wise, what happened? Craig 9:41 Yeah, this is I was just bemoaning Equifax because look at the insane ruined 145 million people's private data, you know, it got released, and some of it was extreme private data. And it was due to the fact that they didn't patch right, they had a six months old patching problem. And really no heads rolled over this. And that kind of upset me too. They just weren't doing anything right. But now we found out because Equifax just had their earnings report last week, we found out that they have they've spent they said more than $1.4 billion because of the breach and that's paying people, covering people for having their credit monitored, etc. And by the way, that does not include the money they keep they paid to Ken and his cohorts. So the 1.4 billion does not include legal fees. So I don't know if I should consider that any form of justice. But yeah, Equifax has paid and paid I would say $1.4 billion, and plus legal fees. This is probably they paid kind of dearly for this. I hope they have changed their practices. You know what people, this reminds us get back to the brass tacks. When it comes to security. get right down to it, make sure you are doing the patches, just wait this month for maybe another week or so for Microsoft to get its act together. But make sure you patch make sure you have the 321 backup stuff in place. Make sure you are taking care of the fundamentals. Matt 11:25 And Craig speaking of justice, you mentioned the word justice. One of the little tidbits that caught my attention was this. This, this news item about Israel actually bombing cyber hackers or cyber, I don't know if you want to call them cyber terrorists, whatever. So this is a this is sort of a this is a new front on on, I guess the the general idea of welfare, warfare, excuse me. And it's it's historic and different, new and a lot of ways. So describe this to us. Craig 11:59 Well, it is it. We know already the IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces, they return fire when Hamas sends rockets over the border and stuff. And apparently, Hamas has been very aggressive against Israeli targets on the cyber security front. So they apparently track down where these Hamas cyber operatives are working out of. And it was a group called HamasCyberHQ.exe is what they call themselves. And the IDF came out with with a statement on Twitter that said, following our successful cyber defensive operation, we targeted a building where Hamas cyber operatives work. HamasCyberHQ.exe has been removed. And in Twitter they posted a picture of a U shaped building with the right side of it colored in red. And that apparently was a section that is now wiped off the map. So kinetic conflicts is what it's been called, which I thought was really kind of cool. But yeah, apparently Israel has decided that cyber warfare, it should be treated the same as any other type of warfare. And they took them out with good old fashioned explosives. Matt 13:20 And speaking of taking out that's a good segue or not, but Jeff Bezos is undercutting and taking the knees out of FedEx. He's going going after them directly. What's happening there? Craig 13:35 Did you see this pictures? Matt 13:36 I did. Craig 13:37 Bezos on this big John Deere right, front end loader. And yes, this is really fascinating, because of course, Amazon keeps trying to cut costs. We've talked about that before. And one of the things that they are doing right now just last week, outside of Cincinnati down in Kentucky, because they're right on the border, he's building a 3 million square foot parking garage, he's building his own airport, they're going to call it the Prime Air airport. It hasn't a parking garage for 100 cargo jets. Amazon doesn't own anywhere near that many right now. And he is launching his own freight delivery service. extensively, we're assuming here to be able to move Amazon products around the country. He's putting that one and a half billion dollars into this and saying this is going to create about 2000 new jobs. But as you pointed out, FedEx and UPS have been hauling this stuff for him. So I don't know, maybe it's rubbing a little salt into their wounds, because this is going to hurt their businesses. Matt 14:45 Indeed, it is. Craig we have maybe a minute and a half left here. So a quick question here to wrap up here, hospitals, device makers and proving security following cyber attack. So you hear hospitals and cyber attacks and gonna freak me out a little bit like health records and everything else like what's actually happening here in a couple of minutes? Craig 15:03 Yeah, well, we know health records are especially two years ago, it was the year of the medical cyber hack. Right now what we're seeing is US hospitals very concerned because there was a test done on CT machines and others in the hospitals. And it found that they were very vulnerable to hackers. And that's extremely concerning. Think about what might happen, if you have a had a radiological machine, an x-ray machine that was compromised, and they compromised them throughout the country. And now they're holding people's lives, literally at ransom, because they're saying, Hey, we will overdose people on x-rays. It's a terrible thought. And hospitals are now pushing back to device makers saying we want to know everything about those devices. We're buying, what operating system is inside of them, and go further along the lines. And we've seen that before too even in manufacturing facilities. Some of these devices even are still running Windows XP. These are not just a black box. It's not just sitting there doing nothing, right? It has a computer in it, everybody. We've got to protect it. And so hospitals are really pushing the device makers now. Matt 16:18 Yeah indeed. All right. Craig Peterson, our tech guru joins us at this time every Wednesday to go over what's happening in the world of technology. As always Craig, we appreciate it and talk to you again next Wednesday, sir. Craig 16:29 Take care. Bye. Bye. Matt 16:31 Thanks a lot, Craig. Alright, so we're gonna take a quick break here. Craig 16:33 Hey, if you're interested in having me, I was thinking maybe do a little quick masterclass on this whole fasting thing. Maybe put a little support group together because I know it can be tough. I don't know. Let me know if you think I should or if you have any other questions, just me@CraigPeterson.com. And you know if you're interested, look it up. Study it a little bit. This is free, right? Who's going to pay for TV ads to do something for free, right? Nobody. This stuff just works. I'm just fascinated, amazed by it. Amazed how good it is, how good it's been for me, and how good it's been for thousands of other people that I'm aware of. I don't know what the ultimate number is. Amazon want to be plenty of things, the most predictable of which is its ambitions to control America's shipping backbone. The company's efforts to bring users whatever they desire in 24 hours requires movements by land, air and sea. Today, the company broke ground on expanding its airborne ambitions, breaking ground on a three million square-foot Prime Air airport outside Cincinnati (in Kentucky).

Facebook's acquisitions of Israeli companies, specifically Onavo and Face.com --have significantly boosted Facebook's core business: targeted advertising. Apple's second largest R&D center is in Israel, and it's reportedly working on processors, chips and sensors that are increasingly important to Apple's new devices and to augmented reality technology, meaning, Apple's future beyond the phone. Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, has been deeply engaged with Israeli innovation for decades, but its recent acquisition of Mobileye, an advanced driver assistance company from Jerusalem, signals Intel's intent to be front and center in the coming autonomous vehicle revolution. Oracle has recently announced that it plans to enter the cloud infrastructure race, trying to claw away market share from Amazon, the runaway leader, and Microsoft, which is itself trying to play catch-up. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/digibiz-africa/support

We regret to inform listeners that due to a lack of reciprocity in our business relationship with Amazon, we will no longer be offering our Chef’s Specials for purchase using Dash buttons or through Amazon Fresh. In progress Prime Air drone deliveries will be rerouted to the nearest Amazon Locker. On this week’s program: pushers, dreamers, acquirers and toll collectors.
In December 2013, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos appeared on "60 Minutes" and unveiled Amazon Prime Air, a drone-delivery system that he said could transport packages to customer doorsteps in 30 minutes. Bezos said more safety testing and federal approvals were needed, but he estimated that Prime Air would be available to customers in as soon as 4 to 5 years. What's up with that project and other civilian applications of unmanned vehicle technology? Sean Gallagher, Baltimore-based IT editor of Ars Technica, recently attended two drone conferences, including one in New Orleans that featured Amazon Prime Air vice-president Gur Kimchi. Sean joins Dan to talk about drones in work, play and warfare.Links mentioned in the podcast:• The Dronebuster (http://arstechnica.com/informationtechnology/2016/05/dronebuster-will-let-you-point-and-shoot-command-hacks-at-pesky-drones/)• Marines' autonomous robot-drone (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/05/by-our-powers-combined-marines-test-teams-of-autonomous-robots-drones/)• FAA's progress (or lack thereof) on drone rules (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/05/faa-chief-announces-advisory-panel-on-drones-as-industry-checks-its-watch/)• Air traffic control for drones (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/05/by-mapping-the-skies-airmap-app-paves-the-way-to-a-drone-filled-future/)

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how Amazon is partnering with the British government to expand its testing of delivery drones, paving the way for commercial air deliveries for UK residents. The expanded testing, announced today in a press release, involves Amazon working with the UK Civil Aviation Authority to focus on operating drones outside of the line of sight of pilots, improving sensors for obstacle detection and avoidance, and having one pilot operate a team of multiple, semi-autonomous drones in unison. The project is the latest regulatory victory for Prime Air, the online retailer's ambitious program designed to bring cheaper and more forward-thinking delivery logistics in-house. Then, could what happened in Fukushima happen 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of New York City? That’s what many activists and former nuclear regulators fear for the Indian Point Energy Center, a nuclear power plant that has operated in Westchester County for more than four decades. The plant provides a good chunk of the energy needs for the surrounding area, but it has come under fire in recent years for safety and environmental concerns, including its warming of the Hudson River and a recent case of bolts missing in one of its reactors. Two of the plant’s three reactor units are currently operating on expired licenses, with the state of New York having denied parent company Entergy’s extension requests due to suspected violations of the federal Clean Water Act. Then, a 36 year old man tells a terrifying encounter he had near Homers Gap, Pennsylvania with what appeared to be an upright walking wolf that resembled the werewolves in the movie "Underworld" in the summer of 1998. Then, a flame of American 90s childhood went out on Tuesday with the death of Miss Cleo, the famous infomercial tarot card clairvoyant with the turbans, faux Jamaican accent and over-the-top dramas she solved with her tarot cards. Miss Cleo, real name Youree Dell Cleomili Harris, died in Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday, aged 53. She had been battling colon cancer. After the break, Cam brings up the disturbing tale of the Axe Man of Austin. A serial killer, who became known as the Servant Girl Annihilator, preyed upon the city of Austin, Texas, during the years 1884 and 1885. The killer's name originated with the writer O. Henry. The series of eight axe murders was referred to by contemporary sources as the "Servant Girl Murders." According to Texas Monthly, seven women (five black, two white) and one black man were murdered. Additionally, six women and two men were seriously injured. All the victims were attacked indoors while asleep in their bed. Five of the women were dragged, unconscious but still alive, and killed outdoors. Three of the women were severely mutilated while outdoors. All the victims were posed in a similar manner. Six of the murdered women had a "sharp object" inserted into their ears. The series of murders ended with the killing of two white women, Eula Phillips, age 17, and Susan Hancock, who was attacked while sleeping in the bed of her 16-year-old daughter on the night of 24 December 1885. This week on The Waves of Tech we discuss the Vtech data breach, Black Friday emails, San Francisco startups, and Prime Air drone. We also cover an instance where an elderly man was forced to take his written drivers test electronically which was not as simple as using a VCR for him.
Amazon has a new design for its Prime Air drone, Apple may be replacing the iPhone's headphone jack, Cortana has a date with iOS and Tony is juggling some files with the file management application File Juggler.
Companies, the press, and other interested parties have looked at the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for small UAS, and the response has been positive, but there is work to be done. For documents related to the sUAS NPRM, visit regulations.gov and search for Docket FAA-2015-0150. At press time, the Recently Published Rulemaking Documents page still shows the NPRM as pending publication in the Federal Register, but a PDF of the NPRM is available. News FAA's liberal proposed rules win allies in drone business Jon Resnick, Policy and Marketing Representative in Washington for DJI says, "We are very pleased the FAA is taking a reasonable and practical approach to integrating commercial UAS into the National Air Space. We are very encouraged and stand ready to collaborate with the FAA to implement common-sense proposals as quickly as possible." Mark Dombroff, from law firm McKenna Long & Aldridge says, “My concern is that there will be people entering the UAS business who are attracted by the potential economics. This really requires aggressive monitoring and enforcement by the FAA to insure that the rules are observed." With new rules, the FAA and drone industry make up "Drone advocates let out a collective sigh of relief as new commercial drone regulations are more industry-friendly than expected." Fortune says, the “FAA ... is far more in tune with industry needs than many imagined.” They call it “a promising sign.” Matthew Bieschke, president of the UAS America Fund says, “I think the FAA has had a tremendously difficult job to do, and I think what they came out with over the weekend was surprising. It was less conservative than a lot of people in the industry thought it would be.” Lisa Ellman, counsel and co-chair of the UAS Practice Group at the D.C. office of McKenna Long & Aldridge says, “People feared that the new process would look like the Section 333 exemption process up to and including the private pilot's license requirement ... so this is a huge, wonderful thing, this new UAS operator's certificate. It will be relatively easy to get and will make drones broadly accessible.” Brendan Schulman, head of the unmanned aircraft systems practice at New York City-based law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, says there are aspects of the Notice that the FAA got wrong: Limitations on academic research, night flying, and the height limitation. Regarding drone-based delivery, Schulman says in an email to Fortune, “The proposal considers drone delivery to be air carriage subject to heightened regulatory standards outside the UAS proposal. That's a legal distinction that made sense in the manned aircraft era but I am not sure why they are holding on to it. It strikes me as a real blow to Amazon and other companies that have been working on drone delivery projects.” Amazon drone plans shot down by authorities In the proposed regulations, operators of commercial sUAS must fly under “unaided” line of sight and not over people. This makes package delivery impossible. Amazon vice-president of global public policy Paul Misener told CNBC by email, "The FAA needs to begin and expeditiously complete the formal process to address the needs of our business, and ultimately our customers. We are committed to realizing our vision for Prime Air and are prepared to deploy where we have the regulatory support we need." Small UAV Coalition Applauds the FAA'S Release of the Proposed sUAS Rule as a Good First Step for Industry In its press release, the Small UAV Coalition says, “We applaud the FAA for creating a flexible framework that appears to be risk-based, as we have advocated, and focused on the technological capabilities of UAVs, rather than simply adapting a set of rules from those currently governing manned aircraft.” And, “In particular, we support the FAA's proposal not to require an airworthiness certificate for small UAVs, and to eliminate any requirement for a pilot to obtain manned aircraft f...

Drone bartender battles bots in design challenge The Electrolux Design Lab is a design competition where students submit innovative ideas for households of the future. Among the 35 finalists this year, we see one that carries either hot or cold beverages to thirsty bar patrons, and dispenses the drinks into cups. Control is intended to be by voice or mobile app. 'Gobble Hawk' Wins NASA High-Altitude UAV Design Competition There was another recent contest for students, this one specifically for UAVs that track hurricanes. NASA was looking for a lower cost high endurance UAS, and they chose the twin-fuselage Gobble Hawk design concept from Virginia Tech. The second place OQ451-5 Trident from Purdue would be powered by hydrogen engines, with an endurance of 7 days. Third place was the University of Virginia Big WAHOO (Worldwide Autonomous Hurricane and Oceanic Observer), also hydrogen-powered.. Amazon asks the FAA for permission to play with its drones outside Amazon.com has been operating its package delivery drones in an indoor test facility in Seattle. On July 9, they sent a Petition for Exemption to the FAA asking to move outside. Amazon is serious about package delivery by drone. In part, their petition says: Amazon Prime Air, a new delivery system that will get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using aerial vehicles, is one invention we are incredibly passionate about. We believe customers will love it, and we are committed to making Prime Air available to customers worldwide as soon as we are permitted to do so. We also see that Amazon has made significant progress: In the past five months, we have made advancements toward the development of highly-automated aerial vehicles for Prime Air, including: Testing a range of capabilities for our eighth- and ninth-generation aerial vehicles, including agility, flight duration, redundancy, and sense-and-avoid sensors and algorithms; Developing aerial vehicles that travel over 50 miles per hour, and will carry 5-pound payloads, which cover 86% of products sold on Amazon; and Attracting a growing team of world-renowned roboticists, scientists, aeronautical engineers, remote sensing experts, and a former NASA astronaut. Finally, Amazon summarizes: One day, seeing Amazon Prime Air will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today, resulting in enormous benefits for consumers across the nation. We respectfully submit this petition for exemption so that Prime Air can be ready to launch commercial operations as soon as eventually permitted by subsequent FAA action. Eagle shot wins drone photography competition A competition for drone photographs recently concluded and the winning photo is a birdseye view of an eagle in flight over Bali Barat National Park in Indonesia.
