Rachel Korberg is the Executive Director at the Families and Workers Fund, and Naomi Walker is the Director of the Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN) at the Economic Policy Institute. They join me on this podcast to discuss the economic recovery from the pandemic and the need for dramatic unemployment insurance reform.  We focus on the previously overlooked value of unemployment insurance with a mission to bring it into the 21st Century. Making Build Back Better a reality will help us recover from the impact of COVID-19 as well as historic inequities in pay, job opportunities, and access to social services. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a public investment in new jobs and strengthen the unemployment insurance systems in all states. Innovative and updated unemployment insurance policies tested during COVID-19 for previously non-covered workers need to be continued and expanded. Essential investments in updated technology should allow for a worker-friendly interface. #FamiliesandWorkersFund @EconomicPolicy #BuildBackBetter #UnemploymentInsurance #UI Families and Workers Fund Economic Policy Institute    EPI.org

Bipolar Inquiry
The process of context unfolding in self dialogue for bipolar disorder

video number 101 I'm feeling some you stress for reasons that I won't elaborate on now but we're back into talking about contacts notes that I made and they're a bit out of order because when I don't make videos for days and then typing notes I don't really keep track of any logical order that they go in per se and I was thinking about how context itself is sort of disorder it's like this greater expanse of information and then the content is something that we unfold from the context and we appoint as meaningful so there's infinite context but we are pulling from a very limited amount of the context so the context of the experiences that I've had is something different than the words trying to describe that context so even the words that are somewhat contextual or content extrapolated from the experience the context of the experience not just the experience itself not just describing the experience in terms of content but unfolding the implications as well and it seems to me that context is disordered in a way because it's not the order of the way our brains have been programmed to to see and make meaning of things but at the same time it's like a greater order in that it's an unfolded order it's an order that we haven't yet made meaning out of or seen any meaning in maybe that's part of it that meaningful domain wants us to see the meaning of the meaningful domain instead of keeping making the same meanings all the time because then it becomes meaning less because we start to not even perceive the things that were no longer making meaning out of and that's part of the learning process it's it's part of what is designed in our brain so we keep learning and oftentimes we replace that with the process of continuing to desire more and more things but really I think that redundancy processor that hedonic adaptation asst Jason Silva says in his videos is for us to keep learning but we've been told what to know and so we stopped learning become habits and we desire and desire more and more and more and more instead of learning which is innately fulfilling without needing to desire any particular thing and by desiring something in particular we're actually missing out on everything else that we could be perceiving but our little ego probe compass has put its little feelers out for something in particular that we think that we want and then often times when we get it where are we wanting the next thing so I think that pleasure desire process has taken over learning and actually part of my you stress right now has to do with desire in a way and and I can see that it's possible that this desire will block learning because of that very thing and not to say that desire is bad it's one part of the functionality of the spectrum of the kaleidoscope of tools we have within our brain through which to learn but it's the one that we've made dominant and when that one is over utilized it sort of crowds out those other capacities those other human dimensions so one dimension is desire perhaps and that takes over nearly everything and desire is tied into the me in the ego whereas the other human dimensions are tied more into world centricity and altruism and the common humanity and the connection and there are definite physical desires as in needs and then we extend those into mental desires through our image making process and I was talking about the little book of clarity by Jamie smart and he talked about implication based learning and I can't remember if I talked about how this process of context unfolding in self dialogue in a ways implication based learning because I'm reading between the lines of my experience and then also talking to myself and reading between the lines of talking to myself so I'm just seeing further and further possible implications and perhaps that's part of what dr. david bohm talks about the implicit order in the explicit order there's things that are implicit and there's things that are explicit so I wonder what the implications are creating diverse context versus the implications of just subscribing to the mainstream paradigm wonder of map consciousness is trying to crowd out ego consciousness it definitely crowds it out for a certain period of time and I wonder if context creation can sort of crowd out the amount of knowledge that I have about the mainstream paradigm I wonder if one day it'll just be a distant memory for me cuz right now i'm still in it yet i'm talking about things that are possibly outside of it but then maybe one day i'll be outside of it as well as talking about things outside of it and then not talking about things outside of it in reference to it not talking about it and that could be part of the game of map consciousness is seeing the implications going into that other state of consciousness where we see the implications we're super sensitive we can see those implications and perhaps since we're seeing the implications of things and we're actually acting based on the total pattern of perception of the implications the total pattern implications of what we're perceiving and where that could lead and what that means and and where that came from and and all these different extrapolations to infinity we become overwhelmed and behave in an apparent disordered way but we're reacting to a different order of reality that we can't all sense all the time we can see the implications and extrapolate and that's what crushes us that's what also elevates us at the beginning seeing the implications of love and then seeing the implications of hate and judgment and what are the implications of one person on a long-term medication treatment versus being able to transform and transcend and and move into a different path and I could say to myself that I have a psychotic disorder or it could say that I have an interesting and unique relationship with the universe sometimes I ride the roller coaster of the universe the roller coaster of the spectrum and scale of consciousness and I feel like the temporary incapacitation that happens during psychosis sometimes is a re-emerging capacitation it's emerging with different capacities just like a caterpillar goes into a chrysalis it's completely immobile and protected and safe and then emerges with completely different capacities and that stillness is required for the imaginal cells of our consciousness to rearrange our consciousness in such a way that we r e- capacities this ability shin aspect it's like the reset button on the computer and it's like how if you're doing maintenance on a machine you shut it down you don't try to work on it while it's moving around and I feel like the universe is rewriting our DNA and changing our epigenetic expression and I wrote down that or more controlled by the programs we feel like we have free will but free will is just the ego talking to itself about making decisions and that ego voice is our own voice turned against us and and it's programmed it's other thoughts and conditionings from society and then we call that choosing between one thought and another thought free will and map consciousness comes in and shows us more about true free well and I was thinking about how words block perception and another way it could in a way is that our words or sounds our voice even in our own head in our own voice it blocks the nervous system from fully perceiving in that those words are vibrating through all the nerves that is going through a whole nervous system electrically and those words vibrating through our nervous system are meaning that the nervous system isn't quiet it's not silent and so it can't actually accurately perceive the vibrations that are incoming because there is a vibration already happening in terms of our own voice and so a lot of what we are are perceiving gets blocked out by the fact that we're already having words happening in our nervous system and then it could be possible that it's blocking the EPI mimetics and the endo mimetics the voice of the universe speaking to us and speaking through us and and animating us as the voice of the universe not just the voice of one's personal ego programming and so it blocks perception one can't see actuality when words are a barrier to that and I wonder if there could be like a religion of human neurology developed from the principles from map consciousness and I feel like the principles are the principles of the human nervous system when it's not blocked by abstractions about reality when we're not abstracting about reality we're actually feeling it fully and we're more sensitive to it and it's more challenging to actually go about life and I'm really wondering if all this self dialogue will change what I tune in to next time I do go into map consciousness because I've never spent six months talking to myself about it and since i did go into that state known as psychosis three times in 14 months after the end of this month in a couple of weeks it'll be the longest I've gone without going into that state so it'll be interesting to see if I can stay out of that state beyond eight months to a year to two years to three years I wonder if I can feel like oh the universe is just on my case again I wrote something down about I don't really know what I was talking about but something along the lines of psychosis as getting to this point where one is trying to run away from thought in terms of actually running away physically or having behaviors that are labeled sa paranoia which is like almost running wanting to run away or wanting to hide it's like trying to run away and hide from the collective consciousness of of thought so it's one thing to have a fearful thought and then push it away with another thought that's a form of running away from a fearful thought but as it gets more and more accumulated one actually is literally running away from the projections of the collective unconsciousness not just linear projected thoughts of one's own personal into that individuality and it's actually seen and taken personal when it's gotten to the point of say thinking somebody's after oneself in a way thought is after us it's not us and we usually identify with our thoughts and so going into psychosis is just an extreme form is identifying with thoughts and then these thoughts seem more unreasonable to people who are observing from the outside but those very people have a very similar process going on in their mind that could easily get to the point where it's also supposedly out of control and that could be part of it Krishnamurti says the controller is the controlled so normally we are controlling our thoughts and we feel like we're controlling them but that's just another thought controlling it so it's just one thought after another and and one thought the thought prior sort of takes this position of I'm the one that created that next thought and so I'm controlling it but maybe when that process breaks down to some extent the thoughts get out of control and they start to pile up and then one feels like they're not in control of their thoughts and when that happens it can sort of instead of just going from like one bad thought to learn good thought from one bad thought to one good thought when there's no controller it can go from bad thought too bad to worse to worse to build up to build up to all of a sudden the whole world is ending when really maybe it's the world of thought getting to the very end of it and over time we've evolutionarily we have the reflex to say jump away from a snake well in psychosis so-called psychosis it's like we're running away from some bigger scarier thing but it's all sort of an image in our minds and I'm not saying that's wrong it's sort of a natural consequence of the original process which is actually seen as healthy and that original process is never questioned it seems like it's a reflex to get away from thought because in in mania one is sort of getting away from thought and going into that collective beauty in up the levels of consciousness and as one starts to come down the levels of consciousness one starts to experience more and more thoughts and their thoughts that weren't identified originally with the person who's experiencing them so then they seem like something other but it's actually showing us the consequence of thought in general and then the mania is showing us what happens when there's less thought and more light of consciousness and awareness one sees the whole accumulated thought structure and starts to run and there was an article that I read about the cost of something I don't know what it was like say sitting or something like that and I wonder what the cost of habitual condition thinking is of our regular ego thought process and there's a lot more research right now about things like the flow state and it's some semi elusive state and difficult to get into what if that's our natural way to be and we're supposed to be in that state ninety-five percent of time and and user ego consciousness say five percent of time but really that's happening to the opposite extent so what is the cost of that and a lot of certain things they do studies about that have costs associated with it we never actually studied the level of thinking behind what that behavior is and in a way so called psychosis is like the universe thinking through us for us and it's not always a welcome thing but it's definitely a different type of thinking and it produces different types of behavior and so map consciousness is the design of the universe to make sure we don't get stuck in habitual patterns that are going to lead us towards destruction it tries to help us to explore other modes and ways and behaviors and gestures of being just as children do and we're inner explorers where I thought of the term astral knots they talk about psychonauts as people who take psychoactive substances but it's almost like astronauts they talk about the astral plane I don't really know much about that but I just thought astronauts was kind of a funny word I even think that consciousness is the type of consciousness medicine and at a certain dose it can be poisonous and lethal bite at us at but at the right dose it can be healing and just as when a one has a fever one needs to rest when one has map consciousness there could be a rest period that's needed as well it's sort of like a natural mechanism just like a fever and just as a fever is designed to kill off the organisms the microorganisms that aren't beneficial to our system I feel like map consciousness is supposed to kill off some of the thoughts and thinking that is not beneficial to our mental consciousness system and part of the medicine of map consciousness is that a person might come back with medicinal messages so it not only kills off the bad thoughts some of the time it can create some new endo memes and epi memes that might be medicinal for the person in terms of maybe past things that needed to be integrated and just as it's actually important for children to have the common childhood diseases in order to build their immune system for later life it could be important for people to go into map consciousness in order to build this sort of immunity to being caught in habit or being caught in conformity or rigidity Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bipolar_inquiry. In January 2020, 12 global pharmaceutical companies and 17 public and private entities; including technical, legal, regulatory, academia, research organisations and patient representative organisations, got together to form PharmaLedger, the pharmaceutical blockchain consortium. Joining us for this podcast is Daniel Fritz, PharmaLedger Industry Project Leader and Supply Chain Domain Architect at Novartis and Marco Cuomo, Manager Applied Technology Innovation at Novartis, a team that brings in new technologies, such as blockchain, into Novartis. Marco is also the co-lead architect at PharmaLedger for the blockchain platform.   What is blockchain? Daniel likes to introduce blockchain with the five A's: Assets, too often blockchain is associated with cryptocurrencies as assets but assets can also be data and medicinal products that can be exchanged on a distributed ledger technology Audit, the immutability aspect of blockchain is good for audit. Automation, use of smart contracts eliminate non-value adding steps Anonymize, especially important in the healthcare care industry to protect the patient's data by keeping it confidential and protecting their privacy Authority, no central authority where authority is distributed amongst the participants For Marco the real strong added value blockchain provide at its core is the immutability function. Whatever you store on the blockchain, transactions and data are immutable so no one can change it.   An introduction to PharmaLedger PharmaLedger, launched in January 2020 as a public private partnership under (IMI) the Innovative Medicines Initiative, a joint undertaking between the European Union and the (EFPIA) European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations. It's a three project with over €22m of public private funding. There are 29 partners in the consortium which includes 12 pharmaceutical companies whose goal is to accelerate blockchain adoption. Its aim is to prove that this technology can bring value to patients, increase trust amongst all of the different ecosystem stakeholders and enable new capabilities around supply chain clinical trial and health data. In addition it aims to demonstrate that blockchain can address some of the key challenges the industry has around identity and governance. The whole idea of the IMI is actually about building consortiums to address problems or challenges that are too risk for any one company or too expensive for any one company and which would benefit from having public partnerships.   PharmaLedger use cases PharmaLedger has launched with 8 use cases broken down into three domains: Clinical trials Health data Supply chain Within the supply chain domain, you have two versions of supply chain traceability: clinical supply and finished good traceability. There is electronic project information (ePi) which is also known as an e-leaflet, or an e-patient information leaflet. It's a digital version of the leaflet you find in a medicine box. It contains the latest approved version of that leaflet in a manner that preserves the patient's privacy. In the future it will have the capability to send out recall notification, if there was a quality issue of that product, to send updated product information and also to apply some additional checks on the provenance of that medicine to help reduce the risk of counterfeits. On the clinical trial side, they have eRecruitment which is clinical trial recruitment so that patients can share their health profile and be matched through an algorithm to open clinical trials. Clinical trial eConsent aims to reduce the very administrative process for agreeing to undergo procedures and processes for any clinical trials. Clinical trial for IoT devices is for getting data from devices. Personalised medicines is putting it all together with some advanced digital technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence to help predict what ki...

She is a force to be reckoned with, a holder of two masters and embracer of two kids and a proud publisher of a show with 1 million downloads now. Yup, "Latina to Latina" just crossed the million listen mark this week. But there's more you can hear in my interview with her as part of CONTENTCAST next week! Whaat? Well, I've been busy with podcasting...and TV...in producing the first-ever conference about the intersection of those platforms as cross-over IP. That means a HECK of a lot of companies are turning popular podcasts into TV or film content and TV companies are expanding their shows into fan engagement podcasts. Trust me, it's all the rage. Want to hear it from the experts? Then register for free and catch this huge conference created by NATPE, the global content trade association, on July 14th, 2021: https://natpe.com/contentcast. Just look at the SPEAKERS tab! See what I mean? From Kevin Pollak to Glynn Washington...the heads of SiriusXM to Tegna to iHeartMedia to Triton Digital to...well, you get the picture. Did I mention I also corralled my friend Amy Hill into hosting?(And yes, you heard us chat around a year ago on my other podcast, "It's Quite A Living!" Keep your friends close....) So, that's why this is Epi 12 REDUX. What Juleyka had to say a year ago is still important and appropriate today...only the numbers have changed. (But there are also twice as many podcasts published now as there were then! Yup, we also have Edison Research and Nielsen sharing info at ContentCast. Thanks for listening...and learning... and I hope I see you at ContentCast!

Hey, you. Glad to have you here for Epi258 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where I, Marc Hershon, am Mixin' Up a Mess O' Soundcasts this week. Details on what shows I'm featuring in a sec but first, did you miss last week's Epi 257, hosted by my alternating co-host Mr. Tyson Saner? He featured a triumphant trio of soundcast clips from Blake's Takes for God's Sakes, Good Game Nice Try, and Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. You can always grab that or any other previous installment of Succotash right on our homsight, at SuccotashShow.com. Or pretty much anywhere else you normally gobble up your soundcast treats: Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio…search for Succotash Show on the web and we're sure to pop up. As for what I've got in store for you this time around, I'm going a little differently that usual. I normally harvest four clips from various comedy soundcasts but I've got kind of a mixed bag special for you. A combo platter, if you will. There are some brand new shows and a smattering of things from a few years ago. We'll be hearing from Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salanger in the new Did You Get My Text?; a couple of comedy sketch commercials from Left-Handed Radio; May Contain Nuts, a BBC soundcast from Scotland; Stay F. Homekins, the pandemic-inspired show from Paul F. Tompkins, and a mini-clip from The Midnight Miracle by Dave Chapelle and assorted co-hosts. In addition, I'll be featuring a clip from the Jock Doc Podcast. Yes, I featured the JDP on my last installment, it's true. BUT this clip features yours truly appearing as a character on the most recent installment of Dr. London Smith's show and, gosh, I'd hate for you to miss a minute of me! Plus this episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Down Under Pants, mate! Here's something I forget to mention a lot of these shows but if you're like to read what I have to say about comedy soundcasts and not just listen to me blather on, I am part of the squad that writes the this Week in Comedy Podcasts column over on Vulture.com each week. We each pick one and write about 200 words about it. That column drops every Thursday, usually, and this week I'm reviewing…well, that would be telling. Suffice it to say that I will be reviewing one of the shows that I am clipping in this very episode. In fact, it might be this first clip… CLIPS Did You Get My Text?…Which is from the first episode of a brand new soundcast. It's called Did You Get My Text? And features comedian Patton Oswalt and his wife, Meredith Salenger, who – according to the show blurb – live in the same house yet text each other more than people who live across the country from one another. Here, they sit down and go through their texts together. Our clip is about a photo Patton texted to Meredith which you might have seen. It got quite a bit of attention. It's a woman being interviewed on the news from her home and in the background, displayed prominently on a bookshelf, is the kind of object you normally wouldn't be showing off. The Jock Doc PodcastNext up is a clip from The Jock Doc Podcast. And yes, yes I know I JUST featured a clip from Dr. London Smith and Cameron week before last because they uploaded it to us. But THIS clip is different. It's special. It's got ME in it! But not just me, I'm playing a zany character with a bad French accent. I play Guy Niçoise, a “reclaimed food chef”. Which means he makes meals out of garbage, basically. Bon apetít! Left-Handed RadioA podcast crew that has been around even longer than your Succotash family is Left-Handed Radio. Started in 2010, a year before us, it is hosted by Anna Rubanova and Adam Bozarth. It's largely a collection of original comedy sketches and parodies, mostly of public radio shows and ads. Their publicist, Heidi Vanderlee, from Positive Jam PR, sent me a couple of their spots for Father's Day, which was just this past Sunday. Let's listen together… May Contain NutsFor this next clip we leave the States and head for Scotland. BBC Scotland, to be exact, and a TV show AND a soundcast called May Contain Nuts, to be exacter. This clip is from episode 6 of Series 3 that dropped a year ago this month. The show touts itself as being about “Four hosts, one subject, no script,” and features hosts Stuart Condy, Russell Miller, Chris Miller and Craig-James Moncur. This clip is from a show all about Stonehenge and these guys are pretty funny. I think. Their Scottish burrs are so thick I had to listen a couple or twelve times to get it all, so don't be afraid to hit that rewind button. Stay F. HomekinsWhat did soundcasting mainstay Paul f. Tompkins and his wife Janie Haddad Tompkins do during the COVID-19 lockdown? They produced a soundcast of course, called Stay F. Tompkins. And it's still going, although I'm not sure how much longer they'll be keeping it going – Paul's got to get back to visiting all those other soundcasts! In this clip, Paul starts to get into having been a guest on Larry King's show… The Midnight MiracleThe Midnight Miracle is a soundcast that came out of a summer camp that Dave Chapelle put on in Ohio. The show description calls it “a thought-provoking podcast that uniquely blends the salon and variety show traditions while providing a glimpse into the inner lives of hosts Talib Kweli, yasiin bey, Dave Chappelle, and friends.” It's available under Apple Podcasts' new paid subscription model which can frankly go fuck itself. So I couldn't get an ordinary clip from the show BUT they released this two minute blurp – that's a cross between a blip and a blurb – so here you go… You had enough? Me, too. Be sure to pop in next week for Tyson Saner and Episode 259's rasher of soundcast clippage. Remember to give a listen to me guesting on the Jock Doc Podcast. If you want advanced voting rights, I guess you'll have to find someplace more forward-thinking that the USA. And if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, feel free to pass that ol' devil Succotash! — Marc Hershon

Insider Interviews
Having Sway – Danielle Wiley on Influencer Marketing

Insider Interviews

In 2020,  Danielle Wiley was included in the revered “Top 50” list by Talking Influence. And the agency she founded, Sway Group was selected by Chief Marketer as one of just three influencer agencies of the “2020 Chief Marketer 200”. So it's a safe bet that she has something to say about #influencermarketing. And that's what she did, in Epi 32 of Insider Interviews. I'd had the chance to experience Wiley's thoughts last year when she contributed to The Continuum, a publication about brand + demand marketing, which I'm privileged to edit. In that article she explained how to look at the KPIs of influencer marketing a little bit differently, and the varied ways to determine impact and engagement. We touched on that in this conversation, but a 30-minute conversation gives you a chance to understand much more -- not just about this food writer turned marketer, but things like how cause-marketing is another essential ingredient in influencing consumers. And these days, Sway has evolved to embrace that (and she shared case study examples) as well as digital advertising, both programmatic and paid social, and built what was a natural extension: a content studio. One of my favorite discoveries about Wiley (aside from learning about our common roots working at Food Network in the early days!) was that she was a baker and a cheesemonger at one point. I believe that takes the cake for eclectic pasts among my podcast guests. Her culinary chops have served her well, though, as she can name several brands in or around the category as clients, including Igloo, Coleman, and Domino's. If that didn't get you hungry to hear more, here's what else we discussed: Wiley's evolution from a baker and blogger to early stage expert in social media to our common ground in marketing chefs like Emeril as "c-hunks"! Her observation of the power of engagement with popular bloggers -- and the infusion of trust vs. the singular appeal of celebrity In its infancy influencers were treated more like journalists. Brands were just sending them product and expecting that they would get reviews out of it. That worked ...for a short period of time. ...Then they realized 'if we're just sending them a box of Mac & Cheese, we can't have control over messaging...'. And we started paying them. How the transition from providing product to bloggers to hiring them necessitated greater trust and authenticity in the influencer, and the path to creative content was laid How Sway itself evolved away from the "Hollywood agent" business model to be able to scale and replicate requests -- whether for moms of bedwetters or people who picnic with pizza How brands solve for the demand for content tonnage across multiple channels -- which sparked the birth of a content studio Why the most important step in the strategic brief is a deep dive into the brand's KPIs -- impressions? engagement? The big thing to remember is that as you increase in following the engagement rate goes down dramatically. What's a micro or a nano influencer and why does it matter -- and the various forms of sponsorship. (Hint: Feel free to sponsor THIS podcast just by buying me a coffee!) The shift from wanting to steer clear of influencers with a point of view, to actively seeking that out -- and how the GenZ demand for brand purpose has influenced how brands use influencers! Wiley explained the two initiatives Sway worked on for Stonyfield Farms, for example - tapping eco-conscious influencers and creating a cause-related corporate initiative We took a deeper dive into pro-social initiatives and examples, and the confluence of content channels. (Of course I mentioned the conference I'm producing about the intersection of television and podcasting for example!) And that led to a chat about why Wiley's family gets a little annoyed about her heavy podcast consumption habit! Find Danielle Wiley at: Twitter: https://twitter.com/danielle_sway

Ed Mell came by the studio today and I was thrilled to be able to record a 2-part podcast with him. Honestly, I've been trying to get Ed on the podcast for three whole years. I've had so many people on Art Dealer Diaries talk about Ed Mell in their own podcasts... I think it's probably up to about a dozen people now. It's just one of those things, you know? It's hard to get together sometimes especially when a pandemic gets in the way. Out of all the podcasts I've done recently, Ed's was a podcast I really wanted to do in person. I've known him for 25+ years and for me just being able to sit across the desk from him and have a wonderful discussion about his life, all of his accomplishments, the people that have influenced him throughout his life and made him who he is and what he is, was a gift for me. He's just such an interesting guy, definitely not the type of person that you get to meet every day.  Ed's artwork is really important to me and to many, many other people as well. I collect his artwork and have since I've represented him. I personally own numerous Ed Mell works of art including his oil paintings, bronze sculptures, lithographs, and display them in my home. In the second part (Epi. 153), we go into a bit more detail about the people that influenced him and the types of things he's doing these days. From sculpture to flowers, to figurative works, this is one that everyone needs to listen to. Put it on your hit parade, Ed Mell on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 153.

Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! Today, we have a special solo episode which was written and produced by DJ PJ from CECA. PJ wrote two original songs for this episode in addition to conducting an interview with students from EPI Center. With the help of his peers, he decided on five fun questions to ask a group of students. Then he chose the group to ask these questions to, which ended up being the "Choose Your Dance" class at EPI Center. For PJ's two original songs, both were created with Garageband loops with added vocal narration. 6:53 "CECA to EPI" PJ wrote this song about a hot summer day in the past that he and other students went on a Journey to EPI without the bus. While creating this song he discussed that it was "a long walk that he didn't think he could make, but he made it!" He talked about overcoming this hot day that had obstacles, such as cars driving close to them, a speed bump that a peer went over but PJ went around, and how at one point his wheelchair foot harness scraped the ground and he thought he was going to tip over. But he didn't and said, "I'm alright!" A few things he mentioned about this song were that "The sun was blasting on me, I was ready to take a journey, and I was rollin', rollin' down the street." Yeah, I’ll just tell you a little story I was rolling down the street Yeah The sun was blasting We had to go to EPI and I was like, “alright!” It was hot! I didn’t think it was going to be like this! What’d I get myself into? I was scared and everything cause I was looking for Jesus Jesus was like “dooowah!” (explaining the way Jesus’s wheelchair went with a hand gesture) Oh Yeah! I played some songs I made the journey! 7:54 "I Put My Head Down" This song is about PJ's experience and feelings of being asked to DJ for Maria G's art show. He explained "at first I was shocked, my heart jumped. And then I was like--sure!" He said that he DJ'd for hours at this event. PJ also mentioned that being asked to DJ the event "threw me for a loop and I was nervous about it, first I put my head down and then I was like 'ok!' " Maria asked me to DJ her show I was nervous, I was like (raised his eye brows) It threw me for a loop! Maria’s Show – Maria’s Show It threw me for a loop Maria’s show – Maria’s show It threw me for a loop I put my head down because, I never put my head down and I was like “no…” Maria’s Show It threw me for a loop Maria’s Show I put my head down and I was like “ok!” I met Helen up there, I met everybody up there! Kathy Doyle embodies the early bird that catches the worm. Early into her freshman year of college she aimed to give the commencement speech for her class in four years’ time. She got the honor -- and forty-eight hours later was offered her first job in media. Then, as you’ll hear her describe in this episode, Doyle was part of the earliest team building out The Wall Street Journal Online (yes, I sing the dial up tones for her). Then, being an early riser, she started to listen to podcasts well before Serial was even a thing. And guess what? She was an early-stage employee on the podcast team of Macmillan Publishing. The Macmillan division of morphed out of a prescient move to team up with Grammar Girl podcast phenom Mignon Fogarty – and quickly evolved into the Quick and Dirty Tips Network of short form helpful content. (Perhaps it’s fitting that Doyle’s career was launched with a speech.) Now, with the addition of a narrative network, their podcasts garner millions of monthly listens – and recently also scored an inaugural Ambie Award for their stunning show, Driving The Green Book. Macmillan is the only one of the “big five” publishers with its own podcast network. As Doyle says, “It’s been our vision to serve our authors the best way possible. And audio emerging the way that it did certainly created an opportunity for us to use podcasting as best advantage whether that's through an audio book excerpt or interviews or guest series...” In a media world where everyone is aiming to flow content cross platform it’s a surprising exclusive advantage. (As a matter of fact, we discuss the conference I’m producing for NATPE about the proliferation of TV brands leveraging podcasting, as well. Please register free to attend ContentCast on July 14th!) While she provided many serious business takeaways, we also learned how one phone call, and frequent dog walking, helped lead to Doyle’s career success, and of the drama of “dial-up days” during early-stage internet jobs. And you won’t believe what's got Doyle’s gobsmacked about podcasting these days (yes, I checked the spelling, Grammar Girl fans out there): the evolution of the host read ad. I know, I wasn’t expecting that answer either. But you’ll appreciate how she illustrates the issue with an example from a men’s underwear advertiser. In all seriousness, host read ads are a major topic in the business of podcasting as we balance the goal for perceived alignment with an influential personality with personalization enabled by companies like A Million Ads or Frequency. (Note: I’ll discuss the power of influencers in the upcoming Epi 32 with Danielle Wiley of Sway.) For Doyle, the learning was about balance: how to deliver a strong response while preserving the integrity of hosts and authors. But another balancing act is tied to revenue and the competition for ears and ad dollars. Another business consideration is discoverability. That’s where Doyle and team did a wide scale collaboration with Apple for the notable Driving the Green Book. Hear how they did, in fact, leverage cross-platform promotion in innovative ways – from reading lists to playlists. (Note: Hear show producer Juleyka Lantigua Williams on this from Episode 12 of Insider Interviews.) “I think it keeps a lot of us in this industry up at night. We talk about revenue diversification a lot. In fact, I just did a panel for Digital Hollywood on revenue diversification. ...You can't just rely on the ad model anymore. You have to find new ways -- like exploiting a podcast into a book or a film and TV. I think it's going to be fascinating to see how podcasters leverage new tools that are available now through Spotify and apple, which have been available through Stitcher and Luminary, to be strategic about your content and then finding ways to expand and enhance that through a premium subscription. I think three or four years ago, I would've said absolutely not,

Radical and rising economic inequality is no secret — and now, thanks to new research from the Economic Policy Institute, neither is its price tag nor its cause. There’s never been a study quite like this — one which places specific, real dollar amounts on every trickle-down policy American politicians have embraced. The study’s authors, Larry Mishel and Josh Bivens, explain how their work  reveals that the massive upward redistribution of income our nation has suffered these past four decades can largely be attributed to policies intentionally designed to suppress the wages of American workers.    Lawrence Mishel is a distinguished fellow at EPI after serving as president from 2002-2017. In the more than three decades he has been with EPI, Mishel has helped build it into the nation’s premier research organization focused on U.S. living standards and labor markets.  Twitter: @LarryMishel Josh Bivens is the director of research at EPI. His areas of research include macroeconomics, fiscal and monetary policy, the economics of globalization, social insurance, and public investment.  Twitter: @joshbivens_DC Middle-class pay lost pace. Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! You’re listening to episode 13 of Quarantunes, where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! In this episode, we hear musical expression from ART Center. The songs from this Quarantunes episode were all started in 2019-2020, but were finished in 2021. The reason they are being released just now is because the files were recently recovered. The virtual music creation class then put some finishing touches to the songs. (0:27) "Hello Song" In this song, many artists from ART Center recorded their voices by saying “hello” in their own way. The class also made choices on the style of music, which loops to use, as well recording original parts. (1:56) "Fuuuunk" The class thought it would be fun to make something everyone could dance to. They chose a catchy piano riff and a funky bass to get the song going. Throughout the song, many artists are playing the drums and synths through a midi keyabord. (3:23) "June" The class wanted to create something relaxing. With this song, many artists were playing with a midi keyboard to get the sounds that they were wanting, such as: trumpet, clarinet, synthesizers, flute, french horn, keyboard, strings, piano, and bass. Live drums and vocals can also be heard in the song. (6:29) "Good Memories" The class was introduced to sampling right before they began this project. The class chose an artist and song that really liked and the result was Elvis Presley’s Memories. In the song, the class chose parts that they liked from the original track and put their own spin on it by adding drums and vocals. While making the song, the class focused on good memories. You have no doubt seen the scary headlines warning of a “labor shortage” caused by the additional pandemic unemployment insurance payments. The coverage of this story is widespread, even though most economics reporters can find no credible evidence linking unemployment checks to a labor shortage. EPI economist Heidi Shierholz joins us to explain why UI and stimulus payments aren’t causing a “labor shortage”, and why the answer to this made-up problem is so clear: it’s the low wages, stupid.  Heidi Shierholz is the Senior Economist and Director of Policy at the Economic Policy Institute.  Twitter: @hshierholz Show us some love by leaving a rating or a review!
