Diabolu Frank and Illegal Machine look at the early years of Epic Illustrated, Marvel Comicsā bid at a Heavy Metal style mainstream newsstand anthology magazine. Launched with a Spring 1980 cover date, the magazine featured an unwieldy mix of creator-owned āindieā work, Robert E. Howard/Michael Moorcock fantasy adaptations, and corporate super-hero stuff like Silver Surfer saddle-stitched with a mix of thin glossy and heavy matte paper stocks (like Playboy back in the day.) More to the point, the boys focus on āThe Metamorphosis Odyssey,ā Jim Starlinās sci-fi/fantasy, serialized across fourteen chapters and nine issues. Space pharaoh Aknaton spends millennia setting up a doomsday gambit to halt the onslaught of the Zygoteans across the Milky Wat galaxy before gathering his players and seeking to blow the Infinity Horn. You can also read the story in Slave Labor Graphicsā (dismal) 2000 collection or Dynamite Entertainmentās supreme hardcover, the best presentation available in print. This story introduced Vanth Dreadstar, lethal protagonist of a long running ongoing series published by more houses than most any other character in comics. Afterwards, Frank has another longish āSwords of Cerebusā installment, looking at issues #18-21 of Dave Sims iconic indy. This week's episode was recorded on location at East Side Mags in Montclair, NJ. Today's guest is Joe Caramagna, an Eisener and Harvey award nominated letterer who's worked on Marvel titles such as Daredevil, Captain America and New Avengers as well as serving as the writer of two creator-owned titles: The Further Travels of Wyatt Earp and Model Operandi. Fellow Jersey-based writer/artist Stephen Coughlin also steps in for a few quick comments in between drawing sketches for kids. Stephen is the creator of the title Sanctuary for Slave Labor Graphics. My conversation with Joe is as random as it is hilarious. We talk about his background in comics as a graduate of the Kubert School and starting out as an intern with Marvel Comics. This is Adrian Has Issues, so you know I gotta get some hockey-related banter in and we riff on the Minnesota Wild logo, defunct teams and how Joe's comic book career mirrors that of legendary goalie Martin Brodeur. Also in this episode: Facebook v Twitter: Dawn of Social Networking! Lethal Weapon Impersonations! Superhero Presidential Candidates! The Secret Origins of Stephen Coughlin Adrian King: The Geek Chris Matthews! And more!

In 1997, Sean McKeever self-published his very first work, The Waiting Place, a story about the ennui that comes with being a young adult trapped in a town that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. It was soon picked up by Slave Labor Graphics and McKeever along with Brendon and Brian Fraim and then Mike Norton finished the entire saga of the town of Northern Plains and its denizens in three volumes plus an epilogue. I spend this episode taking a complete look at The Waiting Place, which has been one of my favorite comics coming-of-age stories since I bought the volume one trade in 2001. This includes a full synopsis as well as a review. Show notes and pictures are available at Pop Culture Affidavit, which is also where you can see regular weekly blog entries about the randomness that is pop culture.

On today's show I talk to comics writer Charles Soule. After getting his JD from Columbia Law School, Charles became a lawyer focusing on corporate law and immigration. Simultaneously, he also started his comics career. His first work Strongman was published on Slave Labor Graphics, and subsequently Oni Press began publishing his ongoing series Letter 44. Since then, he's written Swamp Thing, Red Lanterns and Superman/Wonder Woman for DC and Thuderbolts, She-Hulk, Inhuman and The Death of Wolverine for Marvel. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Andy and Derek are happy to have on the podcast the multifaceted Jim Rugg, whose new printing of Street Angel (created with Brian Maruca) was just released by AdHouse. The guys talk with Jim about the significance of the new printing -- a colorful discussion -- as well as the book's protagonist Jesse Sanchez, an "orphan of the streets and skateboarding daughter of justice" who "fights a never ending battle against the forces of evil, nepotism, ninjas, and hunger." The artist discusses the title's early days at Slave Labor Graphics as a serial and its final issue as the launching pad for another Rugg/Maruca creation, Alan "Afrodisiac" Driesler, the mysterious, irresistible, smooth dark chocolate brother of the streets who fights to protect his turf and his ladies. And of course, it's inevitable that the guys get into a discussion of 1970s culture and comics, including kung fu, TV cop shows, blaxploitation films, and Big Jim action figures. Derek and Andy also talk with Jim about his work on other titles, including Supermag (AdHouse), The Plain Janes (DC/Minx), and his art for titles as diverse as The Guild, Adventure Time, and Henry and Glenn Forever and Ever. It's a fun conversation, one with as much savvy and street smarts as the characters who populate Jim's stories.

Writer and radio broadcaster Steve Darnall joins us to talk about his past works in comics. Steve worked in the fringe genres as the comics market struggled to survive after the speculation era went bust. You'll hear about his collaboration with Alex Ross on the 2 part UNCLE SAM prestige series , to his parody of classic romance comics for Slave Labor Graphics and his own companmy Funny Valentine. We also talk about Steve's current job hosting 2 radio shows which present classic Old Time Radio programs Those Were The Days and Yesterday USA, where he puts a historical context while presenting dramas comedies and documentaries made from the 1930s-1950s. As opposed to a nostalgic "Remember When" angle that older hosts use for a geritatric audience, Steve's show is one of discovery for a younger generation who come to these programs with a fresh perspective. Then we talk about the radio superheroes some of which predate the 1938 debut of Superman. Darnall talks about the origins of The Lone Ranger and Green Hornet, created by Detroit radio station WXYZ owner Geoge W Trendle and writer Fran Striker. We also look at the 1940 Superman radio serial. You'll learn how many of the common phrases and plot points of the comics originated on radio like Jimmy Olson, kryptonite, and the infamous lines from MetropolisĀ citizens "Look, up in the sky ..." .
It's another One-Shot! and this time we're promoting the new anthology from Slave Labor Graphics called Fat Chunk Volume 2: Zombies. Editor Jamie Smart (Ubu Bubu, Bear) joins us to discuss organizing over 60 cartoonists for this 144 page anthology celebrating the living impaired. (Get it? Living impaired? Mwhahaha.) He also talks about his 4 page strip in the book and other works coming from his warped and brilliant mind. We also talk to a few of the other creators involved in the book including Laura Howell (Bizarre Adventures of Gilbert & Sullivan, Robin Hoodie), Alan Kerr (Kreepy Kat), and Patt Kelley (Parasitic Twin). CNI's own Jimmy Aquino wrote 2 separate 3 page stories for the book as well with art chores done by Jenny Romanchuk (The Zombie Hunters) and Shane Heron (Awesome Marcus Ninja).
