This episode centers on a conversation with sociologists Dr. Nicholas Wolfinger and Dr. Matthew McKeever about their book “Thanks for Nothing: The Economics of Single Motherhood since 1980” and what it reveals about poverty, race, and U.S. policy. The hosts discuss the core puzzle: even after four decades of gains in women's education and employment, single-mother families are still about five times more likely to be poor than two-parent families, just as they were in 1980. The guests revisit the 1965 Moynihan Report on the “Negro Family,” how it got tangled up with Oscar Lewis's “culture of poverty” thesis, and how both were weaponized in the culture wars. Wolfinger and McKeever stress that Moynihan's actual policy prescriptions were economic—jobs programs and large-scale public investment in Black communities—not moral lectures, but that critics (and later conservatives) recast his work as an attack on Black family culture. They trace a longer state preoccupation with “the family,” from Civil War–era pensions for Union widows and anxieties over divorce in Teddy Roosevelt's day to the backlash against desegregation and the way Brown v. Board rerouted structural segregation into school fights rather than housing policy. The conversation then turns to single motherhood as an economic condition rather than a moral category. The guests emphasize a simple but often ignored fact: one-earner families have fewer resources than two-earner families, and the majority of people in single-parent families are children. They dismantle the “deserving vs. undeserving poor” narrative that paints single mothers as irresponsible, sexually reckless, or “choosing” poverty, arguing instead that policy has systematically stripped support from families at the bottom while rewarding a subset of working poor through mechanisms like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Programs such as the EITC, they note, do get cash to low-income workers, but they also deepen inequality within the population of single mothers by boosting those who can maintain steady employment while leaving the least advantaged further behind. A recurring theme is the “fundamental attribution error”: the human tendency to attribute hardship to bad character instead of bad circumstances. The hosts use this to frame how conservative pundits like Ann Coulter talk about single mothers—blaming “promiscuity” and “choices” rather than the collapse of secure jobs, stagnant wages, and the cost of housing and childcare. Wolfinger and McKeever acknowledge that culture, neighborhood effects, and even heritable personality traits can play some role in intergenerational disadvantages, but they insist that the levers governments can actually pull are economic: wages, unions, transfers, and public goods like childcare and schooling. Nicholas H. Wolfinger is a professor of sociology at the University of Utah, specializing in family demography, marriage and divorce, and social inequality. Matthew McKeever is Professor of Sociology and Department Chair at Haverford. Prior to that, he was at Mount Holyoke College, Rice University, University of Houston, University of Kentucky, and Yale University. “I could be walking in Central Park and come up on one of these horse and buggies. I don't think twice about it because I see it as part of the New York attraction. You know, you have the Statue of Liberty, you have Times Square, and you have these romantic horse and buggy things where people get married in the park and they ride these carriages. And tourists, they take these rides in Central Park. It's romantic, it's something beautiful to see. But I never thought for one second that these horses are abused.” – Tracy Winston, juror from Ryder's trial New York City has a big, visible animal cruelty issue: horses forced to pull carriages, carrying heavy loads for long hours in all types of weather in the middle of chaotic traffic. Three years ago, a carriage horse named Ryder was a victim of this cruelty. He collapsed on a Manhattan street after being worked for hours in the summer heat. Two months later, he was euthanized. His story sparked global outrage. Ryder's driver, Ian McKeever, was charged with animal cruelty The trial took place a few weeks ago, but McKeever was ultimately acquitted. This conversation is with Edita Birnkrant, the Executive Director of NYCLASS and Tracy Winston, one of the jurors from Ryder's trial. New York's weak and outdated animal protection laws have not changed since Ryder died— and because of this, another avoidable death that occurred just a week after we recorded this interview. On August 5th, a horse named Lady died while pulling a carriage in Manhattan. This conversation is about accountability, about corruption and about what happens when justice fails the most vulnerable. It's too late for Ryder and Lady. But it is not too late to act. If you live in New York, please call your City Council members and tell them it's time to bring Ryder's Law, Intro 967, up for a vote and pass this vital bill to protect carriage horses from suffering and death on the city's streets. Timmy McKeever, growing up in Huntingon, California McKeever started his musical journey at age nine after hearing his third grade teacher play worship songs after class. That intrigued young Timmy so much that he picked up a beginner guitar they had lying around the house and started playing around. From there it blossomed into writing music and playing shows. “My whole childhood I would play 2-3 shows during the weekend and go to school during the week. Write music after class. I just fell in love with it” he shares. McKeever got offered a development deal with Jim Cantino over at Droptine Records. McKeever just released his debut album “Devils and Angels”, and it's been getting good feedback. “Devils in Angels is an album that follows all the aspects of love from the beginning to the end and the aftermath. All the highs and lows and in betweens. It's very personal to me because the title track was the first song I ever wrote where I thought this is something really special to me.” He adds that he saved the song for the past two years because he wanted it as the title track of his debut project. Listen to Episode 75: Malnutrition and Feeding Tube Selection first. This episode walks through the decision-making for which enteral formula to select based on the patient's age, protein needs, and GI function. A list of commercially available examples is listed for each age group and protein type. Fluid and caloric goals are discussed to determine if concentrated formulas are appropriate. Lastly, the process of starting continuous feeds and advancing to bolus feeds while assessing for tolerance is reviewed. Build functional skills by following along with a case study that is continued from the prior episode. It's proof that there's more than just formula that goes into tube feedings. Welcome back to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This series was created and peer-reviewed by national leaders in acute care PNP education collaborating with one another to meet the needs of our current and future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a practical approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside. This episode begins with a brief review of malnutrition and pediatric nutritional assessment in acute care settings. Next we begin a choose-your-own-nutrition adventure by asking a series of questions that aid in medical decision-making for which nutrition route is appropriate, and, if enteral feeding is best, then determines the type of tube indicated. A case-based discussion with examples helps you to apply the concepts to a complex scenario. Our next episode will focus on formula selection, the initiation of feeds, and assessment of tolerance. Hey guys I laid it on thick in the intro but trust me it pays off big in bits. John McKeever is the best ever. He has a new show on Netflix called Tires that you already know about. He made it with Steve Gerben and Shane Gillis. I can't believe I even know these guys this is nuts. Also this was recorded a few weeks ago and over on the Patreon I addressed the response to some clips I posted that were not very well received. Go check it out. http://patreon.com/timbutterly Pottstown PA May 18th come see me headline Soul Joel's! https://www.souljoels.com/shop/tickets/timbutterly/ Tacoma, WA October 25-27th https://www.tacomacomedyclub.com/events/91211 Janesville, WI September 20-21st https://www.cabinlaughs.com/events/91709
Noah Bieniek (@NoahB77_) of The College Baseball Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network is joined by College Baseball Central's Jake McKeever. The duo talk about some slumping NCAA Baseball teams. Whether the squads are underachieving their preseason expectations or they're not living up to their program's standards. Bieniek and McKeever go in depth on why each of the respective teams are struggling and if they can turn it around. All four of the last 4 standing in 2023's College World Series are struggling. LSU Baseball has started 3-12 in SEC play. Florida has been dropping midweeks left and right. Plus all of a sudden the Gators are enduring 1-5 stretch in SEC games and find themselves just one game over .500 overall. TCU is undefeated in the nonconference, but have 12 conference losses and sit 11th in the Big 12. Oral Roberts is in the basement of a really bad Summit League. Bieniek and McKeever also touch on a below par Texas team. Are the Longhorns still capable of a little postseason run? Also, Bieniek brings up Miami Florida as a confusing team that is potentially dangerous in the ACC Tournament. Is Noah able to talk Jake into liking the Canes outlook just a little bit more? McKeever then details his preseason whiff on Iowa. The duo adds some analysis on Maryland's and Stanford's current situation. Lastly, Bieniek and McKeever finish by talking about the future of UCLA's baseball program. For more analysis on NCAA Baseball gambling, make sure you check out the College Baseball Picks Page! Bieniek and others will fill out moneyline, run line, and totals picks for every game of every day.
