Ashley is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and mental health copywriter for therapists. In her professional work as a clinician, Ashley has experience with in-patient counseling and case management, outpatient counseling, and medical and insurance practice. In the realm of SEO and private practice, the importance of user experience is often overlooked, leading therapists to rush into website setup without addressing essential business aspects. This mistake stems from a lack of business education during clinical training. To enhance online visibility, therapists must define their ideal client, avoiding generic content that fails to connect. The transition from academic writing to a conversational tone is crucial, with Ashley emphasizing simplicity and clarity. In the SEO landscape, she advocates for a basic level of optimization, simplifying the process by breaking it into keywords, strategic copywriting, and technical precision. Ashley empowers therapists to navigate SEO's overwhelming nature, encouraging them to focus on foundational principles for a well-performing website. Through one-on-one interactions, she dispels the intimidation surrounding SEO, fostering a belief that, with basic knowledge, therapists can independently implement strategies, eliminating the need for recurring expenses. Corey McCoy, CEO of KOK Wings & Things, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his unexpected journey into success as a restaurant entrepreneur. Growing up in a military family, he lived all over the country before moving to Lafayette to attend UL and become closer with his father. Corey served in the National Guard for six years while in school, with a top secret clearance as he worked as an Intelligence Imagery Analyst. KOK Wings & Things was founded in 2016, when Corey, Avery Bell, Tre'Jan Vinson and Jared Johnson were Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. fraternity brothers at UL - Lafayette and living together on a shoestring while attending college. The foursome would cook chicken wings and sauces for friends, beginning with the traditional wing recipe Corey's dad provided them. They enjoyed hosting social events at their home to raise money for their fraternity. In order to pay for the cost of the food and supplies, they started charging for their wings. Word spread about the delicious wings and the "Kitchen on Klinton" thus began out of their home kitchen on Clinton Street. And things went smoothly until one day, the local police came knocking on their door, informing them that it wasn't legal to operate a commercial kitchen out of their home. They realized it was time to 'change up' their operations. KOK began with an initial investment of $250 chipped in by the the partners. As Corey says, "It was everything we had!" In the beginning, the young men would put fryers in the back of a U-Haul as they went looking for customers. In time, they were ready for a food truck. Avery's dad offered to help build a food truck on a flatbed trailer, which they found on Craig's List. KOK would park for a few months at a time around Lafayette as they built up a dependable clientele for their wings and sauces. As KOK became more professional, their goals for growth did also. Once they saw that they had a viable business model, they worked to scale the operations From the beginning, the four young men divided up the tasks of running the business. Corey became the CEO (even when they were still cooking in the back yard) and was in charge of organizing the overall operations of KOK. Avery was in charge of ordering food and supplies, Jared was the Chief Financial Officer, and Tre'Jan was in charge of marketing. It gave them an organized method to focus on growth. Corey credits Heidi Melancon of the Small Business Development Center for helping KOK get their first loan, get free consultations, and get their business bearing. He also credits LEDA and the UL Business school for its help for which he will always be grateful. KOK didn't charge sales taxes for the first two years. This turned around when Adam Curry, a CPA with Darnall, Sikes & Frederick, ordered a meal and realized that no sales tax was collected. He helped the partners get their tax and financial records in order and get their business model organized for a sustainable business model. The Lafayette location is in the former Gallagher's Restaurant, which property is still owned by Nidal Baldeisi. He traded free rent for a few months in exchange for the KOK partners' working to renovate the building as they built their profits. They rented fork lifts from Lowes, got family and friends to help, and they were off in pursuit of a successful brick and mortar business. Corey taught 8th grade history at Acadian Middle when he graduated from UL in 2016 as they built up their business. He worked until KOK turned profitable in order to ensure that he could make a paycheck. The first two years, none of the men took any paycheck from the business. With a solid track record of growth, KOK Wings now has locations in Lafayette, New Iberia and Baton Rouge. Corey and his partners have grown their company from the grassroots level into a multi-million-dollar company with over 50 employees. KOK Wings & Things sells much more than wings and sauces.

IN THIS EPISODE: [01:47] Katie Darnell explains the vision and services offered by Trusted Family and how their service intersects business and personal data [03:24] The family enterprise ecosystem serves as the platform for ensuring that culture, goals, and values are passed down generationally [06:37] Technology has brought a new component to the table that was not there when multi-generational business ventures began [09:34] Organizing and driving engagement within the family is achieved through comprehensive software that includes the listing of social activities not related to the business [17:16] New technology can provide a vehicle for younger family members to be a valuable asset bringing all generations together KEY TAKEAWAYS: A family council is integral to younger members of a multi-generational affluent family to ensure they espouse the same culture, mission, and direction that has contributed to the entity's wealth. Social media platforms like texting, Snapchat, Instagram, and email are not secure ways to communicate, and documentation needs to be centralized. The older generation, who still use a paper trail for business transactions, may resist new technology. However, once implemented, they see the benefits. Dr. Darnall addresses the multiple factors that play a role in chronic pain including biological, psychological, and social factors, and... View More The post The Role of Psychology in Treating Chronic Pain appeared first on National Register.
Pain is often conceptualized as primarily a sensory experience, but the emotional components of pain are just as important. In this episode, Beth Darnall, Director of the Stanford Pain Relief Innovations Lab, pain psychologist, and Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine explains patient-centered pain care, the roles of federal agencies in crafting prescribing and de-prescribing guidelines, and the future of pain psychology.
Living with hypermobility disorders often means learning to live with chronic pain, and as pain is a whole-person experience - physical, emotional, and mental - it stands to reason that pain can have a profound influence on every facet of our daily lives. Joining us for this episode is Beth Darnall, a Stanford pain scientist, international speaker, evidence-based psychologist, and author. Beth encourages us to think about pain more broadly, explaining why a multi-disciplinary assessment is so necessary for diagnosing and treating pain. Beth talks about how sleep is a top predictor of pain levels for the next day, and how treatment for sleep disorders can help with chronic pain. She goes in-depth on the topic of treating chronic pain using behavioral treatments so people are empowered to help themselves, and lists some of the best ways people can improve chronic pain. Beth gives suggestions on how to reduce pain-related distress, discusses the importance of dedicating time to practicing skills and strategies that help people live with chronic pain, and reminds us that it’s what we do in the day-to-day that makes the difference, more than what happens with sporadic office visits. Check out this must-listen episode for anyone struggling to cope with chronic pain! https://bethdarnall.com/
In this week's episode of the Spine & Nerve podcast Dr. Nicolas Karvelas and Dr. Brian Joves highlight a patient centered approach to tapering opioids. Treatment of the chronic pain disease process is challenging, but optimizing patient buy in and creating an active participant in the treatment plan can be very powerful. In many clinical scenarios the goal of tapering / minimizing opioids is medically appropriate to optimize patient safety and health, as well as improve the patient’s function and pain severity. The tapering of opioids can be very difficult and challenging for the patient and the healthcare provider for a multitude of reasons. With an intensive regimented opioid reduction program (although indicated in some scenarios, especially when significant aberrancy is identified) there is some level of concern for potential negative clinical outcomes. These include, but are not limited to, relatively high rate of relapse to utilization of opioids (up to 30%), as well as concern for increased risk for suicide after the taper (Hazard Ratios as high as 6.77 for patients on long term opioids). The importance of these statements is absolutely not to suggest that opioids should typically be continued for chronic non-cancer pain, but rather to emphasize that the method utilized to achieve the taper is critical. Listen as the doctors discuss this difficult medical challenge, including a recent study by Dr. Ziadni and colleagues that demonstrates that a patient centered approach to the opioid taper leads to stable and significant opioid reduction with overall improvement in pain as well. As stated this emphasizes an overall broader and important concept that the active participation of the patient in the treatment plan can result in improved and more sustainable health benefits. This podcast is for information and educational purposes only, it is not meant to be medical or career advice. Professor Rob Copeland is Director of The Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) in Sheffield and Professor of Physical Activity and Health at Sheffield Hallam University. Rob is a keen cyclist. He says “if it's going to be a good day, it'll start with a bike ride…” He arrived at the studio having just played host to Andy Anson, the new CEO of the British Olympic Association. That meeting focused on the work that Rob and colleagues across the city have been doing on the Olympic legacy, supporting the population to be more physically active. Rob graduated in Sport and Exercise Science from Newcastle University. He studied for a Masters at the University of Sheffield before working for two years as a Community Health and Fitness Officer in Mansfield, supporting people with chronic health conditions into physical activity. That laid the groundwork for an academic career that started at Sheffield Hallam University, where Rob took a PhD in ‘Psychology and Childhood Obesity.' Over the past 18 years Rob has worked on over 100 projects supporting people into a healthier lifestyle. The story of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre conventionally starts with the 2012 Olympic Games, but before then Professor Steve Hake had a project called ‘Sports Pulse', which was about how academia and elite sport, particularly sports engineering, could support local companies to advance their technologies. With London 2012, Sheffield was awarded foundation partner status in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine and received £10m of investment from the then Department of Health. Sheffield established a city-wide partnership with representation from every aspect of civic life, led by Sir Andrew Cash and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The money was used to collocate NHS clinics with leisure centres. Three leisure centres in Sheffield now host 80,000 clinical appointments per year. This in turn became part of a much bigger programme called ‘Move More', Sheffield's physical activity strategy. The ambition of that programme was to transform Sheffield into the most active city in the UK. Rob led that programme and Steve Hake became the Research Director. That programme morphed into the AWRC. At its heart is the vision of transforming lives through innovations that help people move. The AWRC is located in Darnall, a ward of 22,000 people, a neighbourhood of 90,000 people, where there is “huge health inequality”, so the centre has a contextual local vision, “it's not just a grand vision.” The £14m funding for the building came from an application to the Department of Health and Social Care. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provided just under £1m for the equipment. The research work of the AWRC is coordinated around three themes: Healthy and Active 100, which looks at how someone born in Darnall today could expect to live 100 years of healthy and active life; Living Well with Chronic Disease, which considers physical activity as a treatment for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke etc; Technological and Digital Innovations to promote independent lives, which talks to the NHS 10-year plan. The centre has a programme of engagement with the private sector, including new start-ups and SMEs. Deputy Director Dr Chris Lowe secured a grant of £850k from Research England to create a ‘Wellbeing Accelerator', which supports the private sector with academic expertise. To be remotely successful the AWRC will have to have tackle the 38% of the population who, according to the latest NHS report, average less than 15 minutes per day of vigorous activity. In relation to this, Rob is “wholly convinced by the power of people.” All communities have assets, talents, and drive, and the AWRC is concerned with creating the conditions within which they can thrive. But the social, economic, and environmental conditions are not the same across all communities. Therefore, this has to be a conversation about empowerment and not...
Terry Brooks sits down with Dr. Helen Deines, Larry Michalczyk, and Pam Darnall, three experts with years of experience in the child welfare field, to discuss the Courier Journal’s recent series on Kentucky’s child welfare system and the need to address the Commonwealth’s high rate of child abuse. Tune in to hear their reflections and calls to action. This episode is a follow up to the Making Kids Count episode featuring Rick Green and Debby Yetter of the Courier Journal.

Beth has a focus on pain catastrophizing as well as treating some of the key issues that prevent patients from succeeding with other pain treatments. Clinically, Beth provides psychological services to patients with catastrophic burn, spinal cord injury or amputation. After fighting her own battle with chronic pain at a young age, Dr. Beth Darnall is on a mission to provide people in pain with the answers and access she wishes she had all those years ago. These answers, she believes, don’t lie in pills, but in the human brain. Dr. Darnall is currently leading a $9M research award to find effective strategies for tapering off opioids and to validate the psychological interventions she believes can help many of those who suffer. Join us as she offers advice for pain sufferers, providers, and payers on how to move forward from the opioid epidemic, and reduce pain safely.
Dr. Beth Darnall’s most recent paper, Patient Centered Prescription Opioid Tapering in Community Outpatients With Chronic Pain, raised some concern on opioid addiction and the reduction of opioid prescribing. Dr. Darnall highly believes opioids have a place as part of an integrative pain care program for certain types of chronic pain syndromes. If you're somebody who has chronic pain, conservative pain care can be difficult to access because it's often not prescribed. Her paper tackles the role of opioid in chronic pain and the numerous barriers patients have to go through to receive the care they deserve. The study also focused on how patients would do if physicians worked with them in a voluntary patient-centered way, each step of the way allaying their concerns and fears about opioid reduction, and working with them to very slowly reduce their opioids over a certain course. Kathryn interviews Stanford University Clinical Associate Professor Beth Darnall PhD, author of “Less Pain Fewer Pills: Avoid the Dangers of Prescription Opioids and Gain Control Over Chronic Pain”. In 2014 over 28,000 Americans died of opioid overdoses. Using her 15 years of experience treating adults with chronic pain Dr. Darnall provides concrete, evidence-based psychological and behavioral alternatives for pain control. Dr. Darnall is featured on NPR, ABC News and in Women's Health Magazine. br Kathryn also interviews Fox News' Outnumbered cohost Andrea Tantaros, author of “Tied Up in Knots: How Getting What We Wanted Made Women Miserable”. 50 years after The Feminine Mystique, relations between men and women in America have never been more dysfunctional. If women are more liberated than ever before, why aren't they happier? Tantaros exposes how the feminist pursuit of equality went too far, and how the unintended pitfalls of that power trade have made women (and men!) miserable.

Writer and radio broadcaster Steve Darnall joins us to talk about his past works in comics. Steve worked in the fringe genres as the comics market struggled to survive after the speculation era went bust. You'll hear about his collaboration with Alex Ross on the 2 part UNCLE SAM prestige series , to his parody of classic romance comics for Slave Labor Graphics and his own companmy Funny Valentine. We also talk about Steve's current job hosting 2 radio shows which present classic Old Time Radio programs Those Were The Days and Yesterday USA, where he puts a historical context while presenting dramas comedies and documentaries made from the 1930s-1950s. As opposed to a nostalgic "Remember When" angle that older hosts use for a geritatric audience, Steve's show is one of discovery for a younger generation who come to these programs with a fresh perspective. Then we talk about the radio superheroes some of which predate the 1938 debut of Superman. Darnall talks about the origins of The Lone Ranger and Green Hornet, created by Detroit radio station WXYZ owner Geoge W Trendle and writer Fran Striker. We also look at the 1940 Superman radio serial. You'll learn how many of the common phrases and plot points of the comics originated on radio like Jimmy Olson, kryptonite, and the infamous lines from Metropolis citizens "Look, up in the sky ..." .
