It was such a pleasure to attend the RIMS Canada Conference 2025 in Calgary. There's always electricity in the air at RIMS Canada, and I wanted to capture some of it! [2:33] We've got two interviews, and then an improvised session I recorded at the DE&I Studio. The sound came out great, and I used it here with the panelists' permission. [2:49] We've got excellent education and insight for you today on RIMScast! My first guest is Eddie Tettevi. He is the Chief Risk Officer at Sandbox Mutual. He's a very active member of the Saskatchewan RIMS Chapter and a member of the RIMS Canada Council. [3:11] We're going to talk about his risk management career, his RIMS involvement, and how his insights from one of his RIMS DE&I sessions led to this discussion. [3:24] First Interview! Eddie Tettevi, welcome to RIMScast! [3:38] Eddie is the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer at Sandbox Mutual Insurance. He's also the Corporate Secretary, which means he helps the organization navigate strategic initiatives within the boundaries of risk appetite and regulatory compliance. [4:12] Eddie has been at Sandbox for approximately two years. When he joined the company, Sandbox was going through a period of rapid growth and taking the right risks. That was something Eddie looked forward to being involved in. [4:54] The CRO role was not an independent role at Sandbox before Eddie started. It was held by the Chief Financial Officer. The CCO role was held by HR. The Corporate Secretary role was held by the CEO. Eddie fills the three roles in his new position. His background fits all three roles. [6:06] Eddie normally leads a risk group of three. Eddie was previously in cyber for 13 or 14 years. His background is in electrical engineering and computer science. He helped organizations secure their software and network. [7:02] Eddie doesn't think risk management is any different. He's helping organizations make the right decisions. The difference is that the portfolio is much larger. Cybersecurity is one aspect of Eddie's risk management work. [7:33] Eddie says cyber attacks are growing. Individuals who may not be skilled are using AI tools to perpetrate cyber attacks. The attacks are increasing exponentially in skill and sophistication. [8:09] Eddie co-hosted a session in the DE&I Studio with Aaron Lukoni and Tara Lessard-Webb, focused on understanding how mental health plays a part in risk management and how organizations should think about mental health as part of a risk management framework. [8:31] The session was “Building Resilient Workplaces, the Role of Mental Health in Risk Management.” In it, Eddie revealed he is skilled in multiple languages, but an expert in none, including English. He grew up with influences from English, French, Malay, and Creole Patois. [9:38] Eddie loves learning about new cultures. That has influenced his accent. In every language he speaks, he has an accent, which makes it interesting. He has worked in French and English organizations. He learns languages in six months. He picks them up quickly. [10:50] Eddie, Aaron, and Tara emphasized making sure we are thinking about and embedding mental health in our risk framework. [11:02] When designing any strategies and initiatives, risk professionals should consider what's happening in the organization. An organization going through a lot of change is already a stressed organization. You have to consider that as you introduce more change. [11:40] Eddie says the award-winning Saskatchewan RIMS Chapter is exciting. It's great to work with people who are interested, dedicated, and committed. He says the chapter is doing some incredible things, such as introducing risk courses into the universities in the province. [12:15] Eddie was a RIMS member before joining Sandbox. You can be a RIMS member without joining a chapter. Moving to Saskatoon created the opportunity for Eddie to join the Saskatchewan RIMS Chapter, which he had been looking forward to, to connect with people. [12:36] Justin gives shoutouts to various Saskatchewan Chapter members. [13:03] Eddie serves on the RIMS Canada Council as Chair of the Communications, External Affairs, and DEI Committee. [13:22] The committee is responsible for making sure that all RIMS communications have a DEI lens and advocate for the risk community, partnering with other advocacy groups around Canada. [13:52] Justin says it's been such a pleasure to meet you and hang out with you! I look forward to seeing you at more RIMS Canada and RIMS events. [14:02] Our next guests organized the 2025 C2C Coast to Coast Challenge. This is a competition for risk management students based in Canada. We'll learn about the case studies and what it took to produce their presentations, and also have a chance to acknowledge the winners. [14:19] We will hear from Shaun Sinclair, the Program Head of General Insurance and the Risk Management Program at British Columbia Institute of Technology, and Janiece Savien-Brown, the Manager for Risk and Claims Management at Metro Vancouver. [14:35] We're going to learn about their various roles, as well. Let's get to it! [14:39] Second Interview! Shaun Sinclair and Janiece Savien-Brown, welcome to RIMScast! [14:47] Janiece Savien-Brown is the Manager of Risk and Claims Services with Metro Vancouver by day. She has been involved with BCRIMA for 17 or 18 years. BCRIMA started the Coast 2 Coast Legacy Challenge three years ago. Last year was its first year in Vancouver. [15:07] Shaun Sinclair is the Program Head of the General Insurance and Risk Management Program at BCIT, an institute of technology in Vancouver and Burnaby, B.C. [15:17] They teach students insurance and risk management courses. Students graduate with a CRM and a Chartered Insurance Professional designation. [15:26] Shaun is also the President of BCRIMA this year. He has been a BCRIMA member for a long time. This C2C Legacy Challenge was awesome for Shaun because two teams from BCIT got into the finals. Shaun had to recuse himself. [15:51] Janiece says the RIMS Canada Conference 2025 was fantastic! Shaun was there with seven students, and it was awesome to see what they were learning. The students told Shaun they loved everything about it. [16:45] The two finalist teams were The Deductibles and Insure and Conquer. This year's submissions were highly creative and impactful. [17:10] Shaun has been involved in Risk Management Challenges for years and has been to the nationals several times with groups. Shaun stays pretty hands-off. The students get the challenge, and Shaun discusses it with them. He figures out what they need from him to do it. [17:42] In this case, a root cause analysis wasn't needed. They learned how to do a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), a heat map, and gather general knowledge. Then he let them go. They came up with the 10-page report. He didn't watch their presentation until they went live. [18:14] Their champion for the challenge was Ken Letander. The challenge was a procurement question. If your organization's ownership is 51% Indigenous, and you keep your staff 33% Indigenous, money comes your way for contracts. [18:48] When the contract is over and it's time to get the money, but the organization refuses to give that information, how do you make sure they have the 33% Indigenous staff and 51% Indigenous ownership? Do you need pictures, or can you use Elders to say it's enough? [19:12] The students had to read a lot about risk and the rules and regulations regarding this question. They had to read the Canadian government's language on what the rules are. It was an interesting case. [19:38] Janiece didn't envy them at all. The students came up with some solutions for Ken Letander, and he was thrilled with what came from all of the reports. [20:33] Janiece says the presentations were phenomenal from both teams, as well as the written submissions. The collaboration came through and showed they owned the essence of the project. You could see the desire of the top team to make it work. [21:12] Shaun says the cases used in C2C are pretty much real cases. Janiece says last year's case competition had to come up with an equitable access tool to use in the system. After Janiece had surgery, she was given a survey, and she recognized it from the case study. [22:26] Justin says it's great that the students collaborate. You need teamwork. [22:54] Shaun says you hear a lot about isolation. He says BCIT is sometimes called “Being Crammed Into Teams.” Shaun and the other teachers assign projects where students are forced to work with at least three or four people. [23:13] After two years of group projects, collaboration is relatively easy. Shaun also makes the students hand-write their exams. They learn how to think through a problem and put it down on paper. Afterward, they go outside and talk about what they did. [24:52] Shaun's advice to academics and students entering a C2C challenge is to follow the rules. If they say 8-point font, 10-page maximum, don't send 14 pages. The instructor should help students understand the material and then step back. Let the students do it. It's on them. [25:42] Janiece says it is key to engage at the conference. While the Challenge is the key feature, the experience at the RIMS Canada Conference is a large part of it. Be present. Don't be on your phones the whole time. Attend sessions. Come to the events, have fun, and network. [26:07] Janiece was at an event, and five people came up to her and asked if she had brought the BCIT students (Shaun had). [26:22] People were absolutely amazed at how engaging the students were, willing to put themselves out there, and setting meetings with people in BC for opportunities when they come back. That's part of the experience. [26:40] Shaun points out that a couple of the students are quite shy and have come out of their shells because they've had to talk to people. The more you do it, the better you get at it. [27:01] Janiece reports that at one of the events, the students who were in Vancouver from Calgary came out and met with her students. RIMS, RIMS Canada, and the local chapter promote engagement. [27:31] The 2025 C2C Challenge Calgary winner is The Deductibles, 1.95 points ahead of Insure and Conquer. Insure and Conquer did an awesome job as well. [28:11] The Deductibles team is: Rabia Thind, Triston Nelson, and Ryan Qiu. [28:32] Parting advice for risk students as they step into their careers: Shaun says, if you're going to be an accountant or finance student, think about insurance risk management. Amazing career opportunities in fields that cover everything are all within your grasp. Put it on your radar. [29:26] Janiece says she is living proof of that. She was going to be an accountant. After a car accident, she switched to insurance and risk. It's a lifestyle. She has gained many friends, colleagues, and mentors. She started as an adjustor and after 31 years, she's still in the industry. [29:54] Shaun says you can swap jobs from broker to underwriter, to claims, to risk manager, to education, and not start again at the bottom. It's an amazing career. [30:26] Justin says Thank you so much, it's been such a pleasure to reconnect with you here at the Telus Convention Center in Calgary, for RIMS Canada Conference 2025. Shaun and Janiece are already thinking about the C2C Challenge in 2026. We'll see you there! [30:51] As I said at the top, we're going to close things out with an improvised session called “Intentional Mentorship,” which was produced at the DE&I Studio. [31:19] Improvised Session, “Intentional Mentorship,” at the DE&I Studio! With the insights of Dionne Bowers, the Cofounder and Chair of CABIP, Ray Chaaya, the Head of Talent at Zurich Canada, and Natalia Szubbocsev of Appraisals, International. Please enjoy! [31:40] Natalia Szubbocsev introduces the panel. Natalia is the Executive Vice President at Appraisals, International, an insurance appraisal company, global but small, with a diverse, inclusive team. Natalia has been a mentee and a mentor and is glad to contribute her insights. [32:38] Dionne Bowers is the Co-founder and Chair of the Canadian Association of Black Insurance Professionals, a nonprofit organization, and has recently joined Markel Canada as one of their business development Colleagues. [32:57] Ray Chaaya is head of talent for Zurich Canada. Ray oversees talent acquisition, talent development, and talent management, as well as the culture portfolio for the company, DEIB, and community impact. [33:15] Natalia asks What does mentorship, particularly inclusive or intentional mentorship, mean for you? Dionne says that it is a strong commitment by both the mentor and the mentee to work together for growth opportunities. [33:38] Intentional mentorship is the dedication that each party has to bring to the table, and fulfilling any sort of mandates that have been asked by both. Depending on the program, it's making sure that everyone is on the same page in terms of what they want from each other. [34:04] Ray agrees with Dionne. There has to be a mutual benefit. Ray has been a mentee and a mentor, and finds that the most valuable mentorship relationships are where the mentor and the mentee walk away feeling like they're learning something every day, having a conversation. [34:30] Ray says it's a two-way street and a relationship that can often last for years, because it is a relationship where the value is long-term. Ray talks to young people, and they ask, You're my mentor, what do I do? It doesn't work that way. It's a long-term investment. [34:56] Natalia says that traditional mentorship, besides being one of the best ways of professional development, is also to transfer knowledge from someone who has the experience to someone junior in his or her role. What other purpose does mentorship serve? [35:19] Dionne says it's also recognizing that it's an opportunity for learning from one another. A mentor is a seasoned insurance professional who is working with someone who is a new entrant to the industry. [35:37] It's recognizing that a mentor and a mentee are learning from each other. Strength in development is making sure that you are taking away something from each other, each time you meet, connecting and learning trends and thoughts, and diversity of thought. [36:10] Dionne asks, How can we do things differently? She has learned a lot from young people. Dionne thought she was cool, but apparently, she's not. And she's just taking away a lot of that into her own world, professionally and personally. [36:23] Natalia says her experiences are not just intergenerational, but in Canada and beyond, intercultural. She says what needs to be respected and adapted to, both by the mentor and the mentee, is that you're coming from different backgrounds. [36:45] In a global setting, that will affect communication, that will affect the thought processes, that will affect everything; the way we do things. Because Natalia leads a global team, she has to be adaptable, sensible, and respectful of the cultural nuances. [37:07] At the same time, she asks her mentees or team to do the same for her, because she comes from a very specific background. She has an Eastern European background. It doesn't matter that she's lived in Canada for 25 years. [37:25] Her background defines the way she communicates, thinks, and handles things. Every culture communicates differently. That's an overall mutual understanding, knowing that we all come from different backgrounds. [37:47] Dionne says there has to be a willingness to learn. There's no point in having a mentor-mentee relationship where it's just going to be closed off, and this is what we're going to talk about. There has to be a willingness to learn. [38:07] Ray says there's a learning agility piece. You have to be flexible in how the relationship is going to go. Every mentorship relationship is different, too. There are no steps on how to be a good mentor or a good mentee. [38:25] It's the chemistry between the two, the value that you bring to each other, and the conversations. The maturity of a mentorship can also go into sponsorship. [38:37] When Ray has a conversation with somebody, and they get to know each other, and feel what they want to get out of this, he can be a voice for that person. It goes back to the conversation of lifting others when you can. [38:54] When Ray thinks back to his mentors who stick out in his mind. He has a lot of respect for them. They are the people who spoke about him when he was not in the room, and had his back in that room when he was not there. [39:15] Those are the people, as Ray matures in his career, he doesn't know that he would be here today if it weren't for those mentors. And that is what he hopes he can bring to somebody else as a mentor. [39:29] Natalia says, in a global setting where she works, boosting confidence is very important. In a multicultural global setting, it's important to encourage someone in a different country, who communicates differently, that it doesn't matter, they can do it. [39:50] We are working on a common goal. That's part of the sponsorship/mentorship/training. [40:08] Ray says you have to be honest as a mentor. The toughest times for Ray were when he realized he was trying to make this work for a person, but to be honest with himself, as a mentor, he should be encouraging this person to look somewhere else, at what their passions are. [40:33] He went into it thinking he wanted this person to be the best they could be at this job. And he realized that's not his job as a mentor. [40:43] His job is to understand what they want out of their career, where they bring value, where their passion is, and guide them to make sure that they ultimately are happy with their career, and they're bringing value to society, and they're contributing to the community. [41:06] One specific person Ray was mentoring, he was desperate to fit them into the insurance industry, because that's how he was programmed. He was thinking, Why is this not working? And he realized it's not working because they don't want to do this. [41:25] And as a mentor, Ray's job now is to say, What do you want to do, and let's help you get there. And when he made that mind shift, it just clicked. That was a little bit of a learning opportunity. Now he's a better mentor for learning that. [41:42] Dionne agrees with that. She had one mentor who told her, If you plan to give back as a mentor, don't have any expectations, or you're setting yourself up for failure. [42:05] A lot of mentors have a similar approach, because we don't know. We want it so badly. We want to be able to say, I did that. I helped them get to wherever. If you have a mentee who is not in the mindset, and you're not sure that this is for them, have that conversation. [42:38] It's important to recognize that you're going to impact their lives differently. Even though you have that mentor-mentee relationship, you may be asking them to reconsider dipping their foot into the industry. [42:55] Natalia says not making assumptions about the other person and having that curiosity, openness, and mutual communication is very important. [43:05] How do you build in mentorship or inclusive or intentional mentorship into your organization? Ray says mentorship programs should be part of any industry, any corporation, or any organization. If you expect people to learn and grow, they need mentors. [43:30] Ray says Zurich has baked in mentorship programs into a lot of its development programs. Your development means you get a mentor, and you learn from that mentor. They bake it into the development strategy that's already there, and don't make it an off-site thing. [43:57] It shouldn't be another thing; it should just be part of your growth and development. And so, whenever they can bake it in, that's what Zurich does. [44:04] Zurich also has amazing employee resource groups that champion a lot of its programs, and the Zurich African and Caribbean Alliance, ZACA, which has worked with KBIP, is a massive champion of its mentorship program. [44:19] Just two or three months ago, Zurich held a mentorship day and increased the mentors on its mentorship platform by 48%. It was just another thing that was out there that nobody was talking about, and another thing people had to sign up for. [44:39] Zurich's employee resource group put a spotlight on it, and they showed the value, and they made it part of the ERG's culture to participate in mentorship. Then all of those ERG participants signed up to be mentors, and now are actively mentoring. [45:00] You really need to look at it from a strategy perspective. It can't just be an extracurricular activity that you add on. [45:08] Dionne agrees. KBIP works with organizations like Zurich, and with the ZACA program and the team, but also does the work for organizations that are not there yet or not willing to put the extra effort in to embed it into the DNA of the organization. [45:33] Part of KBIP's mandate is to create a mentorship program specific to Black insurance professionals. It doesn't matter where you're from, international or domestic student, or anyone who wants to be part of the organization and get extra support to build on their career trajectory. [46:02] What do mentors get out of mentorship? Dionne says as a mentor, she gets satisfaction from seeing someone excel, not necessarily from start to finish. You could be at the tail end of their journey, you could be at the beginning, or you could be in the middle. [46:36] If there is a desired outcome for both parties, and there's success, when someone calls you or texts you and says, You know what, I got that job, or I was recognized for doing XYZ, that is satisfaction. That is success. [47:00] Ray says his passion is helping people grow and develop. He started his HR career in learning and development, because he used to be intrinsically rewarded when he saw somebody learn something he taught them, or he trained them on. That felt like a superpower. [47:21] When Ray can do that with the programs Zurich runs, and he interviews people and watches their growth, and they are so grateful; to Ray, that is worth it all. You don't even have to pay him for that. He will volunteer and do that his entire life because of what he gets out of it. [47:47] Natalia agrees. There are obvious advantages from an organizational point of view, but from an individual point of view, Natalia feels that she has arrived at a point where there's no ego anymore. She wants to transfer her knowledge to someone. [48:04] Natalia wants to tell someone that they can do it. Because she did it, they can do it as well. And that's a very important aspect of mentorship. [48:15] How do you make mentorship intentional and inclusive? Ray says it means they have to see the value. It has to be part of the business strategy. Anything that is not intentional, people think, Why do I have to do this, on top of everything else that I need to do? [48:36] The second we are making it intentional, it has to make sense. This is why I'm doing this, because it's going to benefit me, it's going to benefit the company, and it's going to benefit the people I'm impacting. [48:47] They have to see the strategic business value, and with mentorship, it's easy. Because there's massive value for the organization, there is a massive competitive edge if you're doing it properly, and there is massive learning and development for your workforce. [49:05] You just need to sit down with professionals like KBIP, with people who have thought through it, and understand how to help you bake it into the strategy. Just do the work. Anything intentional has to make sense. If it does not make sense, it can't really be that intentional. [49:28] Dionne says that in every organization, when you are constructing your missions and your value statements, it's sitting down as an executive team, and asking, How can we execute on this? What does that mean? Mentorship is something that bleeds into your brand. [49:57] The brand recognition from a competitive edge standpoint is huge. Dionne says she can walk into a school for outreach programs and say, Zurich is a market of choice. You would want to work with Zurich because of this, this, and this. [50:14] If you can tell them that they're going to be supported along the way with their career, that's added value. That is something that will definitely differentiate Zurich in the marketplace. [50:26] Dionne adds that being intentional is huge because when you are not, people can see right through that. That is where you create toxic cultures. [50:39] It's not in a company's best interest to ignore the opportunities that stem from mentorship programs. [50:47] Natalia says she's not an HR professional, but she imagines that mentorship has a great role in not just attracting the right talent, but in retention as well. [50:58] Ray affirms, 100%. It's part of your growth and development. Sure, you can use it as a competitive edge to attract people, but if you're not doing it right, then they're not going to develop and grow, and that competitive edge is really just smoke and mirrors. It's not real. [51:15] So, if you're going to do it right, you have to develop people and grow people through your mentorship programs, and you have to show the results for it. [51:26] Dionne adds, That speaks to the inclusivity part of diversity, equity, and inclusion. If you can build a strategy that equates to inclusion, it equates to retention. It's not rocket science. [51:49] Ray says Zurich is really good at that. [51:52] Final thoughts on intentional mentorship. Dionne says, “Just do it. I'm a Nike gal. Just do it.” [51:59] Ray says, “I wouldn't be where I am in my career if it weren't for my mentors and my sponsors. And so, if you see potential, mentor the heck out of that potential, because they will thrive.” [52:15] Dionne says, “And acknowledge it. I think that's a big part of that strategy.” [52:21] Natalia thanks Ray, Dionne, and the RIMS DE&I Studio for picking up this topic, a very important topic, and she hopes you enjoyed the session. [52:38] Justin says special thanks again to all of our guests here at the RIMS Canada Conference 2025. In the next episode we will continue with the chapter, Sacred Seeds. Some of these questions are ones that people have asked me recently, and some of the questions were shared with me by Carissa Schumacher, who channeled this book. These are questions that have been posed to her in the past… and I'll share her answers to them, too. This is The Freedom Transmissions 101._____________________LISTEN TO ALL PUBLISHED EPISODES IN THIS SERIES*
Shades of Hope from Transmission 2: The Wheat and Chaff found in Part Two: The Freedom Transmissions, Pages ✨ 109-123In this chapter of The Freedom Transmissions, we are talking about the light forms of hope, the meaning of separation, and how the thoughts we think matters. Here I am reflecting upon the book from my own lens. I share only my own thoughts, learnings, and ideas._____________________Now we move into Transmission 2. Transmission 2 is called The Wheat and the Chaff and within this transmission, we begin with the chapter Shades of Hope. The shades of hope are the Light form or the shadow form of Hope. Whether it is light or shadow, they each have their own energy of hope. So, we'll talk about this and how our thought bubbles and fears are connected to it. How we choose to think about things matters. We'll also look at the power of originality, manifestation, the healthy side of separation, and how we are all here as soul's having a human experience. This is Shades of Hope. Please share this episode with anyone you think might be interested. ↘️___________________________To start, there's something I want to highlight — something that Yeshua addresses at the top of this chapter. In these transmissions, Yeshua's offerings cover many different topics and thoughts, and depending on where you are in your life, some will resonate, some will not. As a matter of fact, you might not even remember having read some words, passages, and paragraphs when you pick up the book a second or third time. This is a phenomenon I've heard many people say, and it's one I've experienced as well. Like I'll open the book to a random page and read something I don't even remember having read before. So Yeshua basically says that this will happen because it all depends on where our awareness is placed on any given day or moment. He says, “Oftentimes in My Offerings, I like to liberate several different birds with one stone. That is why, as you listen to the Offering, depending on where you are in your soul's evolution, you can hear and experience very different revelations at different times.”So in this chapter, we don't actually get to talking about hope until later in the chapter … although, of course, everything that's discussed does connect and relate to one another. We begin by continuing the conversation around the wheat and the chaff, which we previously talked about in the chapter on The Thread and the Stitching of the Dreaming. Essentially the wheat is our soul, spirit, and consciousness; the chaff is our body, form, and matter. While the chaff has worth, our wheat IS worth. We already talked about the two representations of separating the wheat from the chaff: one is through death, when our body returns to the earth and our soul returns to Spirit; and the other is separating from anything that doesn't resonate or align with our evolution, like our imbalances. Here we are reminded that the word “separation” isn't negative. While yes, there is a shadow form of separation — like feelings of disconnect, comparison, or unworthiness — there's also a light side of separation. For instance, separation can create choice, it can create an identity that is independent from the outer world, and it can create space between you ego and your spirit self. Some examples of separation in it's light form could be times that you remove yourself from conflict to ground yourself; it could be letting someone go with love; it could be taking space from issues so that you can discern what matters to you; or it could be unstitching from behaviors or distorted thoughts that keep you in density. It's separating the truth from a story. It's also having the awareness of separation between your soul and your body. And in that space of separation, is where you can access that vast invisible field of infinite possibilities. I believe that it's here where we create and pull forth our dreams and co-create with the Divine. So, in this case recognizing that you are consciousness in form, but you're not limited to your body, is a really great application of separation. You've heard that quote: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”So, we're being called to treat our bodies well and to be grounded, because our souls have chosen to be here right now, in our world. We are being encouraged to move away from things that keep us in density, as it says in the book, “the next joint, the next credit card, the next car, the next ‘teacher,' the next ‘therapist,' the next creative idea you never follow through on, the next excuse, the next complaint, the next cookie.” And to know when enough is enough:.___________________________One of the most important aspects of separating the wheat from the chaff is our ability to separate our consciousness from thoughts that create dissonance.Yeshua says in this chapter, “Though I fully understand the challenges of life as a human be-ing, I am continuously baffled by how often you allow the most inconsequential, transient thoughts and worries to consume you.”If and when we find it hard to disentangle ourselves from dense, limiting thoughts — like, “I hate my body,” or “I'm doomed to never making enough money,” or “This world is out to get me,” this is a time to give it over and ask for help from the Divine. Because if we don't take space from this thought, it can quickly consume us.It's helpful to be able to start to notice our thoughts throughout the day, with as much neutrality as possible. Just notice and witness, as if your thoughts are in a thought bubble floating by. As spiritual guide Byron Katie teaches in her famous four questions, when you have a dissonant thought, ask yourself this:1. Is it true?2. Can you absolutely know that it's true?3. How do you react when you believe that thought?4. Who would you be without the thought?___________________________So right now we are in an era of our soul, the “soul that lives in Balance, transparency, fluidity, and co-creation.” As the book says, this is “not a time of the mind OR the heart. This is a time of the soul, the spirit.”Our souls are taking back their power from our minds. The wheat is our need, and the more we can be aware of our thoughts, and release attachments to our thoughts that make up the story of who we think are, the more our “unmet need for Peace is met.”And here's something to be aware of: the majority of “fear-based, repressive, suppressive, or oppressive thoughts or ideas that we have are not always ours to own.” Meaning, our thoughts don't often come from us: they slip in from the outside. We've taken on the thoughts of others throughout our life, including family, friends, partners, school, communities, and work. As it says in the book, many thoughts “are fed to you or manipulated by outside influences.”We learn that if we don't have an inner process of “discernment, awareness, witnessing, and taking healthy separation from the ‘yours and mine,' it can poison you with doubt, which then leads to distortion, reactions, and the administration of the poison to others, like a virus infecting a host.” We learn something dissonant, we believe it, and then we pass it on. And the more we feed these thoughts through our worry, panic, anger, or need to control, the more power these thoughts will have over us.This is why it's important for us to have healthy boundaries around what we read, watch, listen to, or the circles of people that we keep. It's important for us to be aware of protecting our brain and energy space. It's important to have separation. It's important to have awareness and curiosity on how thought forms slide into our heart, mind, and soul.Allowing others to dictate how we think and feel, while easy to fall into, is deeply unoriginal. So how can we move into originality? First it's to be aware of our connection to a greater consciousness.I want to read this passage on page 118 which speaks to originality and creation:“Original thought and original God-anointed mantles come through slow evolution, gestation, and birthing of something fom the realm, the space, the Void of infinite possibilities. You pluck a possibility, an original idea or concept, stitch to it, gestate it, and, when ready, it comes to your awareness, it reveals. Your heart Lights and then your mind takes whatever this seed, this concept, is, and it begins to move it into realization and manifestation. That is original creation — that does not come from form — it comes from the space of Spirit, from the wheat, and flows outward into the world.”Sounds amazing, right? However, sometimes what happens it that we takes this inspired idea that we've plucked from that vast infinite field of possibilities, and we try to shove it into unoriginal structures. We try to place it in something that fels safe, like following guidelines of what's been done before. However, as it mentions in the book, “authentic creativity merits authentic structures.” So, we are now being encouraged to get out of the “rut of complacency” and to start co-creating — with originality — within the realm of the Divine. There's one more passage I have to read because it's one that I think of often, and it's what encouraged me to create this book study of The Freedom Transmissions on this podcast:“If you wish to be original, instead of striving for the macro, the more and more, the glistening of fame and power, first strive for less and less. Refine your message, concept, expectations, and the true essence of your service. With patience and allowing, you will be well on your way. The structure that is simple, original, and fulfilling of unmet needs instead of filling your ego's wants will reveal itself naturally from there. That is true Divine originality manifest within you.”___________________________Back to the idea of bringing awareness and curiosity on how thought forms affect us. This is going to bring us into the shades of hope.So to live our lives from our wheat — our soul — and not just from our chaff, or body, we are being asked to bring awareness into our daily moments. Awareness is the first step to transforming and rebalancing our mind — and to move us deeper into living in our authentic, original design. The biggest thing that is being asked of us here? It's to seek to be ourselves. When we allow fearful thinking such as anger, worry, panic, dissatisfaction, ingratitude, it keeps us from living in the present moment. Instead we find ourselves trying to control the future while letting oursleves be dictated by the past. Essentially, we are in a loop where past predicts our future. In these moments, we are a “fly in the Web of Life,” instead of being a spider. We are living the same stories, feelings, triggers, and thought patterns over and over. Until… we wake up, stop the cycle, and move ourselves into present-moment awareness. As author and researcher Joe Dispenza says, the “best way to predict the future is to create it, not from the known but from the unknown.”This is where hope comes in. Depending on how you express it, hope can either be a wonderful energy when used in the present, or it can be a massive burden when projected out of the present. When focused in the now, hope can catalyze healing and balance. An example the book gives is, to say, “In this moment, I am hopeful and full of hope for humanity.” Or, “I have hope that even though this relationship is ending, all can be left in harmony, compassion, and kindness.”But then when hope leaves the present and is rooted in the past (which are regrets) or the future (which are wants), you may find yourself saying something like, “I hope this person will change for me,” or “I had hope that things would have worked out better for me in my life.”Dead hopes, like regrets, are burdens. True hope “restores vitality [and] inspiration.”Hope that is moved out of the present and is projected into the future, and becomes about tomorrow or want, is in its shadow form of expectation. For example, “If you use [or buy] this, you will be this…” or “If you earn this amount of money, THEN you are worthy.”As you can see, the shades of hope, light or shadow, depend on if hope is in the present, or in the past or future. And we learn that the Divine has hope: the Divine hopes that we will be ourselves. That we separate oursevles from what everyone wants us to be, say, or do. Or even what our mind wants us to be — so that we can be the original soul and spirit that we are.___________________________As we come to the end of this chapter, we are left with a question from Yeshua. He asks,“Do you hope that God is with you or know that God is with you?”Sit with this question because within it is a rite of passage. Is it the question that moves us from “personal identity to Transcendence, wheat-identity.”To quote, “When you know, to the depths of your be-ing, that God is with and within you, it is easy to hold hope in the present and release all expectations, for you have all you need, which is God. Within the Light, all things are possible.”As for hope, this is a time for us to restore our hope in its “true Divine Essence, which is rooted in Grace, compassion, and sincerity.” Such as “I hope God is with this ill person and [their] family;” “I hope society recognizes this kind person.” or “I hope to see my family for the holidays this year, and that we are all healthy and happy.” This is hope in kindness and love.As it says in the book, “Choose the hope that flows from Faith. When hope becomes a Prayer for joy, not just for you, but for all, the Earth moves. “___________________________Here's your focus until the next episode:
The modern workplace now contains an unprecedented five generations of workers, with very different ideas about leadership and the importance of authenticity. In the last few years we have experienced The Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting and the rise of employees at all levels leaving their 9 to 5 to start their own business, so clearly it's time for change. In this episode of ADHD-ish, I welcome returning guest Ruth Rathblott to discuss these challenges and the need for self-awareness and connection in the workplace. Many of us are hiding and others might be sharing too much. What are the rules and how do we know what to do if what we want is to feel safe, do our best work and experience genuine belonging? In this empowering episode, Ruth and I talk about the transformation that occurs when people start "unhiding"—openly sharing their stories and building stronger, more authentic connections. This mutual sharing not only creates a sense of belonging but can also significantly reduce feelings of isolation and burnout, issues all too common in the modern workplace.

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society. The RIMS ERM Conference 2024 in Boston featured a stellar lineup of risk thought leaders who shared their experiences applying ERM practices to align risk management with strategy and showcase the value of more risk-aware corporate cultures. At the Conference, Justin spoke with two leading ERM practitioners in different primary areas to provide a range of perspectives. In this episode of RIMScast, Justin interviews Christopher Stitt about his session, which he based on the RIMS ERM Framework and the RIMS Risk Maturity Model. Justin interviews Catrina Gilbert about her position at the DFW Airport and her career in risk management and ERM, as well as current airport initiatives. Listen in for a sample of the offerings of the RIMS ERM Conference 2024 with its record-breaking full-capacity attendance. Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS. Other dates for the Fall and Winter are available on the Virtual Workshops calendar, RIMS.org/virtualworkshops. [1:51] First Interview! Our first guest was a featured speaker on Day 2 of the RIMS ERM Conference 2024. His name is Christopher Stitt and he is the Founder and CEO of CrisisLead, LLC. [2:01] Chris's session was titled “The Art and Science of High-performing Enterprise Risk Management: Bridging Silos for Sustainable Success.” We'll speak about that session and give a high-level overview for those who could not attend. [2:18] Chris has a fascinating background that led him to risk management and ERM. His career journey is an inspiration. We recorded live on-site at the Boston Hilton Plaza. Christopher Stitt, welcome to RIMScast! [2:51] This is Chris's first ERM Conference. He's enjoying it and likes getting a broader perspective of how the overall ERM community operates. It's been a fantastic opportunity to network with some amazing professionals and learn from them! [3:20] Chris talks about the session he is giving, “The Art and Science of High-performing Enterprise Risk Management: Bridging Silos for Sustainable Success.” It comes down to people. What sometimes gets missed in the ERM process is the human factor. [3:51] It's about getting the buy-in necessary and the understanding of what risk is, not just from the senior level but across the board. A new concept, the Risk Intelligence Quotient, can help your organization understand how to look at, feel about, and interact with risk. [4:26] The Risk Intelligence Quotient, along with the human-centric aspects of the risk program, can help you build a good risk culture and ultimately, a high-performing organization that can thrive during both business-as-usual and disruption. [5:03] Chris used the RIMS ERM Framework and the RIMS Risk Maturity Model as the foundation of his session. As he studied the RIMS Risk Maturity Model, he saw it was about the journey, from starting a risk program in a new business to developing a mature program. [5:37] As a business grows and a company matures, you need to be able to go through the process and say, “We need to start documenting how this works. We need to start ingraining this into our business process.” [6:01] The RIMS Risk Maturity Model gives a great overview of how to ingrain risk management into your business process, especially in a business developing as a hierarchical organization. [6:41] Chris was a U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service Special Agent for over 25 years managing integrated security risks in embassies around the world. He looked at how international risks would influence U.S. operations in a given country. [7:17] Chris was also Chief of Emergency Planning for the Department of State twice. That gave him a wide view of how risks develop and how to develop response plans to those risks. [7:40] About 2014, The Department of State set up an ERM program. Chris was at the initial meeting. Senior officials were using terms he knew but with different meanings. That led Chris to investigate further into the meaning of enterprise risk and how to integrate it. [8:24] What Chris loves is helping other people understand and build ERM programs. That's why now, since retiring from the Department of State, Chris has moved into consulting. He sees it as a great opportunity to bridge the silos for a better understanding of what we're trying to achieve. [8:51] Chris is excited about presenting his session where he talks not only about the risks but also how you find the opportunities in those risks. It's about building a powerful ERM program that gets buy-in from stakeholders and imbuing ERM into your organization's culture. [9:29] Chris, it's been a pleasure. Thank you for joining us here on RIMScast. [9:43] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! On November 25th, Resolver returns to discuss “The Future of Risk & Compliance: 5 Key Insights for the Modern Leader”. [9:54] On December 5th, we have “Predictive Strategies to Detect Electrical and Machinery Failures”, presented by Global Risk Consultants, a TÜV SÜD company. [10:06] On Thursday, December 12th, OneTrust returns to deliver “Staying Vigilant: 7 Practical Tips for Ongoing Third-Party Risk Monitoring”. [10:16] More webinars will be announced soon and added to the RIMS.org/webinars page. Go there to register. Registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [10:28] RIMS is now accepting nominations for all awards other than Risk Manager of the Year 2025. The submission deadline is Monday, January 6th, 2025. To receive a RIMS award, all winners must be active members and in good standing. [10:48] The awards are the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Chapter Leadership Award, the Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award, the Volunteer of the Year “Heart of RIMS” Award, the Richard W. Bland Memorial Award, the Chapter of the Year Award, the Rising Risk Professional Award, the Risk Management Hall of Fame, and the Cristy Award. [11:26] You can find more information about the awards through the About Us page of RIMS.org or the link in this interview's show notes. [11:35] Final Interview! Catrina Gilbert is a previous ERM Conference speaker. Catrina is well known in ERM in Texas and the DFW RIMS Chapter. We will talk about how ERM influences aviation and some of the risk awareness campaigns she champions at the DFW Airport. [11:56] Catrina Gilbert, welcome to RIMScast! Catrina is the Vice President of Risk Management at the DFW Airport and the Treasurer of the RIMS DFW Chapter. Justin and Catrina have known each other for a few years. [12:30] Catrina is absolutely loving the RIMS ERM Conference 2024. Boston is beautiful this time of year. The speakers, the lineup, the vendors, and the food have been amazing! Every session has been standing-room-only! The Conference is at maximum capacity. [12:54] It adds to the excitement. It is beautiful to see all these great minds from different industries, states, and countries converging on Boston! Catrina had “chowda” for the first time! [13:37] Catrina states that there is never a dull moment in aviation. Airports are growing and rebounding from the pandemic, doing all sorts of construction projects. DFW has a $9B Capital Improvement Plan. From an insurance and claims perspective, that keeps Catrina very busy. [14:02] The DFW Airport has a rolling owner-controlled insurance program, which keeps Catrina super busy. Catrina is also responsible for the airport's ERM program. That's why Catrina is at the RIMS ERM Conference 2024. [14:16] Having the ERM program and being rooted in the organization at the ground level and the executive level, Catrina makes sure that everyone on the airport's Risk Council understands that ERM can also stand for “Everyone's a Risk Manager.”. [14:37] Catrina is trying to empower the team to think strategically and holistically, and to think about how different programs and platforms have interdependencies. If we have an issue here, how is it going to impact, perhaps, the runway or the concessions? [14:57] Catrina is looking at a resiliency framework; how do we bounce back? A lot of organizations are still struggling from the pandemic. Everyone is focused on a resiliency framework. When this happens again, are we ready? That's the beauty of this conference. [15:33] Catrina says every holiday is the best time of the year at an airport! There's no such thing as the worst time of the year. The beauty of an airport is that it connects people around the globe. The holidays are a special time for everyone. Airports love playing a part in that journey. [16:14] Catrina has been at DFW for almost eight years. She has been in risk management since 1999. She has done risk in several industries. Aviation is, by far, her favorite. There is never a dull moment; two days are never the same. DFW Airport is a city, with all the departments. [17:22] Trisha Sqrow and Sandra Fontenot, past RIMScast guests, were DFW colleagues of Catrina's. Trisha is doing great work at the Conference. Sandra Fontenot is doing great work at the RIMS DFW Chapter and helped Catrina with the annual chapter conference. [17:37] Catrina says we grow when we move, but RIMS and risk management keep people together. Catrina thinks the work that they did together at DFW Airport is one of the reasons they're still colleagues and friends. They still share ideas and speak at conferences together. [18:31] Catrina has 12 people in her risk group at the DFW Airport. At her previous airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, she was a department of one. She reported to the city. She hears “department of one” a lot at the Conference, maybe two or three. Everything's bigger in Texas. [19:03] Catrina looks for fresh ideas in a new risk hire. DFW had Innovation Week last week. Seeing the great ideas coming through in the aviation industry, including AI, Catrina wants people who have an open mind, are innovative, and are willing to try some new things. [19:37] You can teach the rest of it. Catrina wants people with the soft skills, the personality, and the ability to jump in there, push up their sleeves, and try it out. [19:57] Justin recently noticed in the restrooms at DFW Airport posters on Human Trafficking Awareness. He is a big proponent of human trafficking awareness. He has led those initiatives at RIMS. He was glad to see that DFW is one of the many airports boosting awareness. [20:18] DFW is one of many airports in this fight against human trafficking. They have training, posters, and placards to educate you to say something if you see something and how to report what you see. It's better to be safe than sorry. DFW provides you with a way to report. [21:06] The Human Trafficking Awareness campaign is a team effort. It went through the Community Engagement Team, the Customer Experience Team, and the Department of Public Safety. Everyone worked hand-in-hand to be on the same beat in fighting human trafficking. [21:32] DFW is proud to be a part of the global Sunflower Lanyard Program, designed to make hidden disabilities a little bit more visible. A passenger who has a hidden disability will receive a Sunflower Lanyard by mail before their departure date. [21:54] When the passenger with the hidden disability is in the terminals, DFW employees have been trained to recognize the Lanyard and give them a tailored experience by asking how they can assist the passenger to have a wonderful travel experience. [22:14] It's about providing for the diverse needs of a diverse population to ensure that everybody has the same experience in traveling. [22:25] What a delight to finally have Christoper Stitt and Catrina Gilbert as our special guests here on RIMScast! [22:33] Check out this episode's show notes for links about the ERM Award of Distinction Winners and Honorees and more about the Conference. The Thread and Stitching of the Dreaming, Part 2 from Transmission 1: The Weaving of Spirit upon the Web of Life found in Part Two: The Freedom Transmissions, Pages ✨ 96-106In this chapter of The Freedom Transmissions, we contine our discussion of the thread and stitching of the dreaming. Here I am reflecting upon the book from my own lens. I share only my own thoughts, learnings, and ideas._____________________Here we continue moving through The Thread and Stitching of the Dreaming in The Freedom Transmissions which we started in a prior episode. In that episode, we talked about how, in our origin story, our soul is woven and stitched into our body, through our DNA, our chakras, bones, blood, and heart. We also have our sprit body, which is the invisible space around us: the strings, threads and energy that connects us to the great Web of Life. So, here's one way to think of it: think of the body and soul like a spider, and the spirit body as the silk that the spider uses to create it's web, connecting to the larger Web of Life, or the external world, in seen and unseen ways. As I mentioned in that prior episode, it might be helpful of threading and stitching as vibrations and waves. Our energy is our vibration. Everything is made of energy. So something that's important for us to continuously do is to look at what and who we're matching our energy to. What and whose frequency are we on? And what frequency are we allowing into our energy space? In other words, what are we allowing to stitch to us and what are we stitching to, including people, organizations, businesses, groups, and really anything under the umbrella of those seven imbalances? This is part of our work here as souls in body.So in this chapter we start digging into what's referred to in The Freedom Transmissions as the “wheat” and the “chaff,” which we'll dive deeper into in Transmission 2 as well. Today, we'll talk more about unstitching and unbraiding, we talk about the power of committing to our inner process, we take a look at grief (what it means and why it's an energy to be honored), and we discover what is considered the only stitch that matters right now. This is The Thread and Stitching of the Dreaming, Part 2. Please share this episode with anyone you think might be interested. ⬇️___________________________WHAT TO FOCUS ON THIS WEEK
Welcome back to the second part of my interview with Carissa Schumacher. This is a continuation from our second chat we had here on Hold the Light within The Freedom Transmissions book study series. If you haven't yet listened to the first part of our conversation, click here. We cover a lot of interesting topics there including how to be in communication and partnership with the Divine, and how to deal with needs verses wants. In this episode we talk about whether or not she feels the pressure to live up to — or to match — the wisdom of Yeshua in her every day life; whether or not she considered publishing The Freedom Transmissions without the name Yeshua attached to it; what the aftermath has been like since she published the book; and we discuss two specific transmissions that Carissa felt compelled to highlight and talk about right now. Here, we continue my conversation with Carissa Schumacher.SUBSCRIBE ➡️ Join me on Substack at Hold the Light with Laurie Gunning GrossmanLINKS, LINKS, LINKS*

WoW! Absolutely BLOWN AWAY by my conversation with Lisa McClellan. She has been taking care of her brother, former Middleweight Champion The "G-Man" Gerald McClellan for almost 30 years since his Traumatic Brain Injury suffered from his boxing match with Super Middleweight Champion Nigel Benn in 1995. The first "G" in "Gigli" is pronounced like the "J" in “Jacques,” the second “G” is silent. Rhymes with "really." Now that that's out of the way - we conclude our Martin Brest series with the turkey of all turkeys. The Bennifer original sin, the project that should have gotten Justin Bartha put in prison. That's right, folks. We're talking about one of the canonical “Worst Movies Ever Made” - 2003's GIGLI. Screenwriter Jen D'Angelo joins us to talk about this fascinating cultural object, and makes a case that Ben Affleck is “good in this movie, actually.” Griffin and David disagree. About: Hosted by journalists Joan Summers and Matthew Lawson, Eating For Free is a weekly podcast that explores gossip and power in the pop culture landscape: Where it comes from, who wields it, and who suffers at the hands of it. Find out the stories behind the stories, as together they look beyond the headlines of troublesome YouTubers or scandal-ridden A-Listers, and delve deep into the inner workings of Hollywood's favorite pastime. The truth, they've found, is definitely stranger than any gossip. You can also find us on our website, Twitter, and Instagram. Or buy our merch! There are so many interesting things to see out at Overland Expo. From jumping fire pits to outrageous $1 Million builds it really does have it all. Something we tried this year was the classes for the mini assistant. She took the first aid class "Booboos and Outchies" and we even learned a thing or two. In our time there we meet with some companies, some old friends, and even made some new ones. First Interview was with Brian from Goose Gear. They manufacture storage solutions for a bunch of different vehicles. You can have a basic drawer to a full camp kitchen. F Find Goose Gear: Website, Instagram, YouTube For our second Interview we meet up with my friends Mac and Owen from Bound For Nowhere. They have been buddies of mine for some time ever since they had there VW Van. We sat down and talked about their new Tundra build and what travel plans they have for the future. Find Bound For Nowhere: Website, Instagram, YouTube The Third and Final Interview is with Jonathon from Oregon Trail'R. This was really the Assistants find while her and the mini assistant were running around on day one looking at all the trailer and vans. She really loved the simple layout of the teardrop style, but the attention to the small details that made it stand out from the others. SVB's (Silicon Valley Bank) collapse has more to do with the housing market than you think. With bank runs becoming contagious, Americans in fear of economic turmoil, and a recession now closer on the horizon, assets like real estate could be affected in ways that most everyday Americans don't realize. But, to understand what could happen to home prices and the US economy, we'll need to explain the entire situation. Back on as expert guests, J Scott, multi-decade investor, and Scott Trench, CEO of BiggerPockets, are here to share their takes on the SVB's meltdown. More importantly, they explain the events leading up to this bank collapse, how the pandemic created fuel for this future fire, and whether SVB's collapse could cause a chain reaction that leads to more bank failures, harder economic times, and, surprisingly, higher mortgage rates. J and Scott debate whether or not more small banks are at risk, what could happen to HELOCs (home equity lines of credit), mortgages, and other financing options, and whether or not real estate will go down with the ship as our economic situation goes from bad to worse. And, if you've been saving up for your next investment property, stick around as J and Scott walk through how real estate investors should be using their money in troubling times like today. In This Episode We Cover: SVB's collapse explained and how it could drag us into a deeper recession The effects on real estate and whether or not prices will drop as a result Mortgage rate predictions and the Fed's shaky decision to raise or halt rates HELOCs (home equity lines of credit), mortgages, and other property financing options that could be in danger Whether or not we're in a recession, and if we aren't, when the recession could hit Investing in real estate in 2023 and the moves you MUST make to protect your investment And So Much More!
