1987 studio album by Suzanne Vega
POPULARITY
Legendary singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega looks back at her remarkable career — and forward to her new album, Flying with Angels, her first collection of original songs in nearly a decade. From the moment she emerged in the 1980s with her self-titled debut and follow-up Solitude Standing, Vega has occupied a singular space in popular music. Known for her literate lyrics, calm delivery, and understated innovation, she became an unlikely pop star with songs like “Luka” — a devastating portrait of abuse — and “Tom's Diner,” which began as an a cappella sketch and became a surprise dance hit, later used in the development of the MP3 format. Vega discusses how those early hits shaped her identity, and how she's maintained a relationship with her past work while continuing to evolve as an artist. She shares stories behind her biggest songs, her longtime collaborations (including with producer and ex-husband Mitchell Froom), and her connection to a vibrant downtown New York songwriting community that included figures like Jack Hardy and Fast Folk magazine. She also reflects on the new material, including the haunting “Mariaupol,” inspired by the war in Ukraine, and “Rats,” inspired during the lockdown in New York. These songs mark a subtle shift for Vega: from her usual allegorical storytelling to more direct commentary and bearing witness to events in real time. Along the way, the conversation touches on Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, motherhood, stagecraft, artistic responsibility, and the strange alchemy of simplicity and resonance. Vega shares anecdotes from her life on tour, her early performances (including a childhood appearance at Pete Seeger's feet), and her unexpected intersections with technology and culture. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

In this limited run series I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode we will feature Suzanne Vega and DNA. In 1987 Suzanne Vega wrote and recorded Tom's Diner. This song was recorded acapella and it was Vega describing the different activities that were taking place in her neighborhood diner. This song was released on her second album “Solitude Standing”. English music duo in 1990 DNA which consisted of Nick Batt and Neal Slateford remixed the song. They added drum machines, synthesizers to the acapella which created a new distinctive sound. Here is a listen to "Tom's Diner" . "Tom's Diner" became a surprise hit in Europe and reached the top ten in several countries. When DNA remixed the song, they did it without Suzanne Vega knowledge or permission. Even though she was originally upset, she grew to love the new version of the song and performed the song with DNA. This remix actually paved the way for all remixes because it allowed DJ's to breathe new life into an original track; taking it into an entirely new direction. That's it for this Vinyl's from the past, now let's get back to more music. Bruce Mennel: Start – 18:19 and End – 24:17Bruce Mennel is a DJ and Producer whose specialty is techno and minimal techno. His sound consists of a bass-driven beat combined with drum elements. Take a listen to his latest track “Hacktivist”. “Hacktivist” is out now via Conundrum records and its available on all streaming platforms. Bringing a fresh approach to sound design, Bruce is well known for his distinct and imaginative use of specialization.
Long before the Twilight books and movies made vampires cool, the motion picture The Lost Boys was a hit. This dark comedy/action drama centers around Michael and Sam Emerson and their experiences with a biker gang who are secretly vampires living in the California beach town of Santa Carla. When Michael is drawn into the influence of the vampires, he must make a choice between becoming a vampire himself or fighting the conversion by killing the head vampire. The name comes from the Peter Pan stories, because much like the lost boys in that tale, vampires never grow up. The cast included Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman, and was a box office hit.The film also created a hit with The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Featuring a number of notable rock stars and groups including INXS, Foreigner's Lou Gramm, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Who's Roger Daltrey, it spawned multiple singles. The soundtrack contains both original songs and covers, all either alluding to events in the movie or to what could be considered “vampire culture” - lostness, staying up at night, and similar characteristics. The film is credited for changing the perception of vampires to a more youthful and appealing monster. Subsequent adaptations of the vampire genre which would be inspired by the film include movies as diverse as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the mockumentary film “What We Do in the Shadows.”John Lynch was up all night “staking his claim” on this podcast feature. Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMannSinger-songwriter Gerard McMahon wrote this anthem under the pseudonym Gerard McMann. It would be considered the theme for the movie, and was specifically written for the film. McMann was thinking of a Gotham-like image in which you have to turn to faith in order to escape the doom in the night.Lost in the Shadows by Lou GrammGramm steps out from the shadows of his group Foreigner for this solo effort. The video for this song would feature clips from the film. Fuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut, and was also written specifically for the movie. Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me by Roger DaltreyThe Elton John hit is covered by Who front man Daltrey, and the allusion to vampires is pretty clear to see. The film ends with morning breaking and the sun coming up, and Daltrey is singing this song as the credits roll.I Still Believe by Tim CappelloThe Call's song is covered by saxophonist Cappello, who also makes a cameo where he is playing the song on the boardwalk. The lyrics are about the 40 days of fasting that Jesus undertook at the start of His ministry, and the reference to belief plays into the theme of faith versus giving into darkness that runs through this film. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Once Upon a Time...Storybook Love by Mark Knopfler (from the motion picture “The Princess Bride”) It would be inconceivable for us to pass up this theme from the Rob Reiner movie which was in the theaters in the fall of 1987. STAFF PICKS:One Slip by Pink Floyd After the departure of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd released the album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" with only David Gilmour and Nick Mason listed as members. Bruce brings us this staff pick which was co-written by Gilmour and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. It is about unintended consequences of impulsive action, in this case an unintended pregnancy. Hourglass by SqueezeRob features the debut single from Squeeze's seventh album, “Babylon and On.” The fast-paced chorus is distinctive and catchy. Songwriters Chris Dilford and Glenn Tilbrook typically wrote the lyrics and music respectively in separate sessions (much like Bernie Taupin and Elton John), but collaborated in the same room on this song. The memorable video is full of surrealism and optical illusions.Luka by Suzanne Vega Wayne takes an uncharacteristically softer and slower pick with singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega's song about child abuse. The song was actually written prior to Vega's first album but didn't make its studio debut until her second album, “Solitude Standing."” The name comes from a boy who played in front of Vega's building and stood apart from the other children. Bad by Michael JacksonLynch brings us the title track to Michael Jackson's massively successful follow-up album to “Thriller.” Jackson wrote this song in an attempt to change his persona to a tough guy. The video was directed by Martin Scorsese, and Prince auditioned for the video. He departed as soon as he read the line, "your butt is mine," and Wesley Snipes would take the role. NOVELTY TRACK:Wipeout by the Fat Boys featuring The Beach BoysWe finish off with this unlikely pairing of beatbox rappers of the 80's and beach music founders of the 60's.

When Suzanne Vega played a short residency at New York's exclusive, super high-end Cafe Carlisle in 2019 (for the second time in her career) she wanted to put on a show, something special:“I thought, let's make a show out of it. I wanted to make it like an old style revue, since it's a small and very upper crust place with out-of-towners and locals as well, from all over New York. So I thought we'd make it about New York songs. It seemed to go down really well. I heard the elevator boys talking about it after the show so I knew it must be good”. Who knows if the Carlisle Hotel elevator boys knew who she was before those shows, but there can be no doubt about Suzanne Vega's mastery of the craft of songwriting, and of performance, something that comes together perfectly for Suzanne's current project “An Evening of New York Songs & Stories”. The show comes complete with Suzanne the songwriter but also the raconteur and the ‘show-woman' (complete with top hat) - something she never expected to become when she was starting out in music at the beginning of the 80s. After all, as a child, she hated being looked at. My chat with Suzanne starts with the concept of storytelling through song - but also between the songs, and why that's so rare on the music scene these days. We explore the early years of course, and the various lives of some of her greatest songs, like ‘Tom's Diner' and ‘Marlene On The Wall'. I wanted to know if she still felt that a song should be an essentially sad thing and I had to ask her about one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and a personal obsession for 35 years - her song Ironbound/Fancy Poultry, from the 1987 classic album Solitude Standing. I was excited to hear about the prospect of a new album of brand new Suzanne Vega songs in 2023 and she is to begin the European leg of the New York Songs & Stories tour early in 2022 (pandemic permitting) - whatever you do don't miss it. In a world in which music is in great abundance, what Suzanne Vega does is as rare as things can get. Hats off to you Suzanne!Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

For Father's Day, the Randomizer decided to troll dads everywhere with a tale of woe and trauma that sure makes one father look AWFUL. We watched "Redemption In Her Corner" (S21E13) this week. Don't worry though because plenty of other people get some stink on them too because this is Law & Order: SVU, after all. As per usual, Adam and Josh go down innumerable rabbit holes—trying to figure out just what Liv's birthday actually is, wondering what Barba was doing in Iowa investigating election fraud for primaries that don't exist, the origins of the boxing for fitness craze, and the origins of Italian soups. Fathers everywhere should listen to remind them that there are a lot of bad dads out there, and they should work to make sure they're not one of them. We also talk Munch My Benson Movie Club pick Brain Dead, an existential brainmelter featuring Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton. Yes, they're two separate people.

Suzanne Vega joined Soul Sisters one day before her Cafe Carlyle debut and two weeks before the 30th anniversary of her album Solitude Standing, which cemented Vega's place in the canon of singer-songwriter fame with hits like Luka and perhaps one of the most ubiquitous songs of all time, Tom's Diner. Stopping briefly to shovel down a quick breakfast, Martin and Sam talk through the different perspectives on (and from) diners in Waits's songwriting, the intellectual posturing of overly loquacious verbosity (big words), and the marvellously stripped back a-cappella stylings of Suzanne Vega. John Wilson talks to Suzanne Vega about her career defining album "Solitude Standing". Programme 2 (B-side).Now it's the turn of the audience to ask Suzanne the questions. We hear how the sound of Solitude Standing changed toughened from her previous album, as Suzanne decided to bring out the drums and give the sound an edge. Suzanne describes writing the song "Gypsy" for a boy she met at summer camp and how the two of them got back in touch when he realised the song was about him. And we hear how Suzanne has written a follow-up song to the album's hit song "Luka". Producer: Emma Kingsley.
The second programme of this new series in which John Wilson talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes. In Episode 1 (The A side), John asks the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances. Programme 2, A-side "Solitude Standing". Singer and songwriter Suzanne Vega discusses the influences behind her platinum-selling second album, released 25 years ago, which included hits like "Luka" and the title track. She explains that it was her manager who saw the potential of "Luka" and convinced her that a song with a social message could be a hit. She recalls how the tune for "Tom's Diner" came to her while she was walking down Broadway after having been to the real Tom's restaurant. And she discusses the way in which images and words were part of her life from a very early age and have influenced her work. In the next programme (The B-side) it'll be the turn of the audience to ask Suzanne the questions. Producer: Emma Kingsley.
On episode 12 of Love That Album, regular contributor, Geoff Smith returns to discuss with me Suzanne Vega’s second album “Solitude Standing”. I’d heard the album many times. Geoff heard it twice. As a result, Geoff suggests the podcast undergoes a controversial name change. What was his suggestion? What did he have to say about the album? Will Geoff get kicked out of Tom’s Diner next time he’s in New York? All this and more is discussed.
