Years ago, on the iconic American Bandstand show, TV legend Dick Clark stuck a microphone in young Bruce Sudano's face and asked, “What is your musical ambition?” The teen fans who filled the audience didn't have to wait long for Bruce's answer: “I want to perform in Madison Square Garden.” It happens that Sudano, then a member of a trio named Brooklyn Dreams, had already played in that fabled venue a few years earlier, opening with his band Alive ‘N Kickin' for Eric Burdon and War. But in ways that were then beyond his imagination, he achieved much more than that one gig in the Garden. He continued to love playing live shows but his true passion quickly became songwriting. Back then, Sudano cultivated a style that combined pop and soul sensibility with jazz-worthy polish.   Sudano's journey provided ample inspiration for his new album Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies. It begins in Flatbush, where his father helped kindle his curiosity about music. “He used to have a jukebox route,” Sudano says. “He'd come home at the end of the week with a box of 45s. The thing that always intrigued me, even more than the singers and musicians, was the names under the title in parentheses – the songwriters.” His career in music began when he co-founded Alive N Kickin'. They released one hit single, “Tighter, Tighter,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard charts in 1970. Tommy James (“Hanky Panky,” “Mony Mony,” “Crimson and Clover,” “I Think We're Alone Now”) wrote the tune and co-produced the album. Sudano had written much of the band's repertoire, but it was James's mentorship that helped him to elevate his work. His focus intensified as his songs were picked up and recorded by some of the major artists of the day, including Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire and Michael Jackson with his brother Jermaine. But his most fruitful association dates from 1977, when Brooklyn Dreams was hired to provide background vocals for Donna Summer on her album I Remember Yesterday. In 1980, their relationship blossoming beyond the studio, Donna and Bruce married. The fusion of their professional and personal lives boosted each one's creativity as they co-wrote her world-wide smash hit “Bad Girls,” as well as  “Lucky,” “On My Honor,” “Can't Get to Sleep at Night” and “Starting Over Again,” which Dolly Parton recorded and lofted to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Music Charts. Tragically, Donna succumbed in 2012 to cancer at age 62. Though shattered by her passing, Sudano understood that even in the depths of sorrow, seeds of creativity continue to grow. “Suddenly I was in a new situation,” he says. “I didn't have Donna to write for anymore. I was at the age where I'm not gonna put another group together. Instead, maybe I could be the singer/songwriter that I didn't take the opportunity to be before. Out of the deep hurt of the situation, I felt challenged to continue to be an artist. That's an essential element, to continue to be challenged, to be forced to go to other places, to feel other things, to know you're not stagnating.” This great loss in his life opened the door that led ultimately to a period of creative growth, releasing 6 albums and numerous singles in the last decade, and now  Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies. Bruce Sudano had co-written the Tommy James & the Shondells 1969 hit “Ball of Fire” and played keyboards in the bands Alive ‘N Kickin' and Brooklyn Dreams by the time he met Donna Summer. The two of them clicked professionally and personally and soon were co-writing the smash title track and other songs for Summer's blockbuster 1979 album, Bad Girls. They also co-wrote Dolly Parton's #1 country hit “Starting Over Again,” based on his parents, and continued collaborating throughout a marriage that lasted until her 2012 death from lung cancer. Since then, he has rebooted his own career, recording several albums, including the new Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies. Sudano takes us from his mentorship with Tommy James through his life with arguably the disco era's greatest artist, for whom he and his daughters recently accepted a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. This Sunday’s message was entitled "Starting Over Again for the First Time". Thirteen years have passed since Genesis 16.  As we come to Genesis 17, it sounds like another  promise of God to bless Abram and Sarai. Abram is now 99 years old. Sarai is almost 90. Yet, there is something very, very new here. Just when Abram might be tempted to think that it’s too little too late for him, God says, “Okay, now we are ready!” This chapter is great news for anyone who has thought that they were too far gone to be any good to God. It is really good news for those who feel like their spiritual lives have been shriveling up during COVID, messed up by marriage or parenting, and worn out by the long wearying wilderness experiences of life. It’s never too late for a new start, for a new vision, for a new engagement with the mission of the God. God delights to give people new hearts and new starts. Is God calling you to a new and fresh start with his mission and call on your life? Let’s encourage one another on Sunday with this great gospel hope!

PART THREE - 10:55 mark Scott and Paul's in-depth conversation with Bruce Sudano Bruce comes over to hang out with Scott and Paul at Songcraft world headquarters, where he explains how he hounded Tommy James into giving him a shot; why he says he became a "cocky self-assured arrogant jerk" before he figured out how to be a good songwriter; the reason "Bad Girls" was almost a Cher song; the controversy that erupted when Michael Jackson recorded his song; why Donna Summer went on "The Tonight Show" to help save Bruce's parents' marriage; how his 30 year love story with the disco queen influenced his songwriting; and why he thinks he might be at the end of a creative streak. Bruce Sudano is a Brooklyn-born songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist who first hit the scene when Tommy James and the Shondells recorded his “Ball of Fire” in 1969. He spent the better part of the next decade focusing on his own bands, Alive N Kickin’ and Brooklyn Dreams. The latter group collaborated with Donna Summer on “Bad Girls” and other songs, which led to a personal relationship between Bruce and Donna. The pair married in 1980 and remained together for 32 years until her untimely passing in 2012. The team of Sudano and Summer wrote “Starting Over Again,” which became a #1 country hit and Top 40 pop hit for Dolly Parton. In addition to his multiple Donna Summer cuts, Bruce has also had charting singles recorded by Jermaine and Michael Jackson, Robert Palmer, and Reba McEntire. Others who’ve recorded his songs include Tammy Wynette, Steve Wariner, Point of Grace, and Snoop Dogg. Exclusive Multiplicity: Highlighting the Adventures of a Serial Entrepreneur

I’ve titled this podcast "The Adventures of Starting Over Again (Again)" because it’s not the first time I’ve had to hit the “restart button” in life and almost head right back to the drawing board. They say you should fail soon and often, so that you can figure out how to get things right. I’m not so sure about all of that, but I do know that nothing will get solved by wallowing in the sadder moments of my life. And there surely are some. I don’t deny them, nor do I try to minimize them with that lame “get over it” mantra that people love to throw around. What I do try to do is be cognizant that things may suck, and hope that they can get better. And, I also like to help others, and shift some of the focus away from what’s not going right in my life, by hopefully helping someone else get through a difficult part in theirs. So, it’s along those lines that I’m embarking on my next “adventure”. In the very near future, I’ll be in need of additional staff to help manage a variety of projects that I have on the horizon, and it’s been laid on my heart to first and foremost seek out those that are unemployed and underemployed as the first line of defense for meeting my staffing needs. Now, I’m not saying that I’m hiring, nor conducting a formal job search right now, but what I am asking so for folks to tell me their story, and familiarize me with their skillset.  If you know someone that needs a job, or is looking to transition to a new career, they can send an email to “Careers@sss4success.com”, or follow this link on my website and fill out the form on my company’s page. Just doing my best to be the change I want to see in the world!  Also, for those that are curious, as I suspected, my “How Social Media Is Making Me Suicidal” post was just as popular as I suspect it would be; even more so.   There were about 30 times more downloads of the podcast and 50 times the traffic for the first few days it was up. Even now, about 2 months later, and it’s still one of the most popular posts on the site. It’s rather telling about people and the content they gravitate towards, but it’s somewhat comforting to that I was right on the money with what I thought would happen. Thanks to all those that reached out and provided support to me. I truly appreciate it, and look forward to paying back your kindness in the universe! Please feel free to leave comments below or give me your feedback directly, either by email “podcasts @ exclusivemultiplicity.com”, or by finding me on Facebook, Twitter (@KindraCotton), or LinkedIn.  You can also contact me via Skype at my name Kindra.Cotton, and you can now call me on my Google Voice line at: (201) 870-0234.  If you leave a message on my Google Voicemail line, please be sure to mention which podcast you listened to.
