Years ago, on the iconic American Bandstand show, TV legend Dick Clark stuck a microphone in young Bruce Sudano's face and asked, “What is your musical ambition?” The teen fans who filled the audience didn't have to wait long for Bruce's answer: “I want to perform in Madison Square Garden.” It happens that Sudano, then a member of a trio named Brooklyn Dreams, had already played in that fabled venue a few years earlier, opening with his band Alive ‘N Kickin' for Eric Burdon and War. But in ways that were then beyond his imagination, he achieved much more than that one gig in the Garden. He continued to love playing live shows but his true passion quickly became songwriting. Back then, Sudano cultivated a style that combined pop and soul sensibility with jazz-worthy polish.   Sudano's journey provided ample inspiration for his new album Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies. It begins in Flatbush, where his father helped kindle his curiosity about music. “He used to have a jukebox route,” Sudano says. “He'd come home at the end of the week with a box of 45s. The thing that always intrigued me, even more than the singers and musicians, was the names under the title in parentheses – the songwriters.” His career in music began when he co-founded Alive N Kickin'. They released one hit single, “Tighter, Tighter,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard charts in 1970. Tommy James (“Hanky Panky,” “Mony Mony,” “Crimson and Clover,” “I Think We're Alone Now”) wrote the tune and co-produced the album. Sudano had written much of the band's repertoire, but it was James's mentorship that helped him to elevate his work. His focus intensified as his songs were picked up and recorded by some of the major artists of the day, including Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire and Michael Jackson with his brother Jermaine. But his most fruitful association dates from 1977, when Brooklyn Dreams was hired to provide background vocals for Donna Summer on her album I Remember Yesterday. In 1980, their relationship blossoming beyond the studio, Donna and Bruce married. The fusion of their professional and personal lives boosted each one's creativity as they co-wrote her world-wide smash hit “Bad Girls,” as well as  “Lucky,” “On My Honor,” “Can't Get to Sleep at Night” and “Starting Over Again,” which Dolly Parton recorded and lofted to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Music Charts. Tragically, Donna succumbed in 2012 to cancer at age 62. Though shattered by her passing, Sudano understood that even in the depths of sorrow, seeds of creativity continue to grow. “Suddenly I was in a new situation,” he says. “I didn't have Donna to write for anymore. I was at the age where I'm not gonna put another group together. Instead, maybe I could be the singer/songwriter that I didn't take the opportunity to be before. Out of the deep hurt of the situation, I felt challenged to continue to be an artist. That's an essential element, to continue to be challenged, to be forced to go to other places, to feel other things, to know you're not stagnating.” This great loss in his life opened the door that led ultimately to a period of creative growth, releasing 6 albums and numerous singles in the last decade, and now  Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies. What a tumultuous year 1990 had been for the Hit Factory — and the final four singles produced by Stock Aitken Waterman that year certainly highlight that. What should have been Lonnie Gordon's second SAW-produced single, "If I Have To Stand Alone", came out as her third, but despite being in the same vein as top 5 hit "Happenin' All Over Again", it under-performed on the UK chart and the If I Have To Stand Alone album wasn't even released there at the time. Lonnie joins us for one final time to discuss the disappointment she faced as a result and the US dance hits she recorded with Black Box in the following years. New girl group Delage was launched in December 1990 with a remake of disco classic "Rock The Boat" — and Karina and Emma from the group reveal how the project came about. Meanwhile, one final single was belatedly released from Donna Summer's Another Place And Time album. Mike Stock tells us about the lyrical change Donna requested for "Breakaway" and the late singer's husband and manager, Bruce Sudano, talks about the song's success in South America and why Donna ultimately decided not to return to PWL. Kylie Minogue. Big Fun. Donna Summer. The last time we encountered these three artists, things were going swimmingly for each of them. In the case of Kylie, she had just racked up her seventh UK top 2 hit in a row — a run that was broken by "Never Too Late", the third single from Enjoy Yourself. As well as discussing why a tune as good as "Never Too Late" wasn't as well received as Kylie's previous singles, we hear from Mike Stock about the meaning behind the song, while Sharon McPhilemy fills us in on that dress-up music video. We also take a look at how Enjoy Yourself came together, with Kylie beginning to seek more artistic involvement in the process. Meanwhile, Big Fun moved from a remake to an original Stock Aitken Waterman composition, "Can't Shake The Feeling". Matt Aitken talks about the difficulty of nailing down the track and we look at the boy band's competition at the time: some new kids on the pop block. As for Donna Summer, the fourth single from Another Place And Time was met with a muted reception, barely scraping into the UK top 75. Was "When Love Takes Over You" the right choice? Plus, Donna's husband and manager, Bruce Sudano, recalls shooting the video, which was directed by Donna, and why she faced resistance whenever she tried to slow the tempo down.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Stylist Sharon McPhilemy fills us in on how the looks in Kylie's first UK-shot music video came together. We're also joined by Donna's husband and manager, Bruce Sudano, who provides their perspective on the ups and downs of the '80s, what it was like working with Stock Aitken Waterman and why they loved "Love's About To Change My Heart". Meanwhile, boy band Big Fun scored their first hit with a remake of "Blame It On The Boogie". We trace their story through a former incarnation as Seventh Avenue and a pre-PWL single with house producer Marshall Jefferson. Then, we hear about almost-single "I Feel The Earth Move", produced by Phil Harding and Ian Curnow, who describe their reaction to that cover version being shelved. Mike Stock and Matt Aitken also join us to discuss working with Big Fun on "Blame It On The Boogie" and the trio's much-discussed vocals. Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Bruce Sudano returns on October 1st, 2021 with a fresh offering of dispatches from the heart on his latest EP of new original songs, Ode to a Nightingale, to be released on his own Purple Heart Recording Co. The new record succeeds a pair of equally immediate, thoughtful, and urgent mini-albums issued in 2020. Released last April, Spirals Vol. 1: Not a Straight Line to Be Found was praised by Americana Highways for its “five moving songs about life, love and death that captivate and hold the listener's attention.” Sudano's October 2020 release Spirals Vol. 2: Time and the Space In Between garnered a four-star review from American Songwriter, with freelance writer/author Lee Zimmerman noting, “Sudano's found himself on a steady roll.” Noted for his songwriting for Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, and Donna Summer and his own hits with the band Brooklyn Dreams, Sudano has established a burgeoning reputation in his own right. Fittingly, his latest release began with solo sessions at his home studio in Milan, Italy. “I live half my life there,” says Sudano, who also maintains a home in Los Angeles. “I basically walked in my studio, did all the vocals and acoustic guitar, and then e-mailed it all over to my producer Randy Ray Mitchell in L.A., and he put guitars and bass on. Depending on the song, we employed who we thought would be the appropriate drummer.” He says that for the new record, “I delved more and more into my harmony thing – I came out of a tradition of harmonies in Brooklyn Dreams, and growing up in Brooklyn at the end of the doo-wop era. The ability to do harmonies, to create harmonies, is a gift that I've kind of ignored in this evolution of myself as a solo singer-songwriter.” The song “Ode to a Nightingale” – derived not from John Keats' 1819 romantic poem, but from imagery in the work of Italian poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini – was written in the aftermath of the 2020 election, and draws on the same political charge that powered “The Mountain” on Spirals Vol. 1 and “American Sunset” and “For the Sake of Humanity” on Spirals Vol. 2. He says, “I see the nightingale as a voice in the darkness, hopefully singing beautiful melodies that are leading us out of the darkness and into the dawn and the light of a new day.” Likewise, in the set-closing “All Hands” he cautions against complacency: “We can't let our guard down. We have to be vigilant, because we're certainly treading a very fine line in our country.” The dream-like song “In Shadowland” – which is being launched by a vision-infused video directed by Furio Ganz, with striking visual effects by Claudio Bellini – shouldn't be pinned down by any definitive interpretation, the writer says. “I decided that I'm not going to describe that song, because it's an illusion – it's an illusion lyrically, it's an illusion sonically, and it's an illusion visually when you see the video. Everybody who has heard the song or seen the video so far has had their own interpretations of what is being said. If you're sensitive enough to listen to your inner spirit, your inner voice, it's this whole world of shadows.” While there is no shortage of serious and introspective material on Ode to a Nightingale, Sudano adds, “I didn't want this record to be as heavy and dark as some of the things I'd been writing in the past. I've transitioned through a lot of loss, and I wrote a lot about that. I wanted this record to be a little light, and I wanted to revisit the vocal side of things. I wanted it to have more of a pop element to it.” The bouncing, blissful “Do Be Do (Daytrippin')” was inspired by the time he spent with his wife Francesca, whom he married in February 2020, in the months after the pandemic hit.

This episode of My Backstage Pass we speak with singer and songwriter Bruce Sudano. Mentored early on by pop wiz Tommy James of Tommy James and the Shondells fame, Bruce Sudano was one of those fortunate few who was able to achieve a parallel career as both an artist and songsmith. He achieved his greatest glories by way of the material made famous by others — among them, the Jacksons, Dolly Parton and his late wife, Donna Summer. Nevertheless, he was seduced by the stage early on, and his initial efforts with the bands Alive N Kickin' and Brooklyn Dreams netted him a recording contract and led to his first solo album, The Fugitive Kind in 1981. In the meantime, he formed a personal and professional relationship with disco diva Donna Summer for whom he penned the smash hit “Bad Girls.” It proved a highly lucrative collaboration; aside from the series of songs Summer went on to record, Sudano was also able to contribute to several successful soundtracks —“Thank God It's Friday,” “The Hollywood Nights,” “Perfect,” and “American Hot Wax,” the latter of which featured Brooklyn Dreams in the role of a fictitious band called the Pantones. A top five single, “Heaven Knows,” soon followed, and after the two married, life seemed ideal. Donna's passing brought their magical partnership to a premature end,  but Bruce has bounced back by returning to the solo spotlight with music of his own making. We talk with him as he shares his saga and talks about what's ahead for him in the future. Bruce Sudano is a Brooklyn-born songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist who first hit the scene when Tommy James and the Shondells recorded his “Ball of Fire” in 1969. He spent the better part of the next decade focusing on his own bands, Alive N Kickin’ and Brooklyn Dreams. The latter group collaborated with Donna Summer on “Bad Girls” and other songs, which led to a personal relationship between Bruce and Donna. The pair married in 1980 and remained together for 32 years until her untimely passing in 2012. The team of Sudano and Summer wrote “Starting Over Again,” which became a #1 country hit and Top 40 pop hit for Dolly Parton. In addition to his multiple Donna Summer cuts, Bruce has also had charting singles recorded by Jermaine and Michael Jackson, Robert Palmer, and Reba McEntire. Others who’ve recorded his songs include Tammy Wynette, Steve Wariner, Point of Grace, and Snoop Dogg. Bruce Charles Sudano is an American singer-songwriter, noted for creating songs for artists such as Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire and his late wife, the Grammy Award-winning singer Donna Summer. Sudano is the founder of indie record label Purple Heart Recording Company. Signed as a solo artist by RCA he released his first record The Fugitive Kind in 1981. It featured the song "Starting Over Again"  co-written with wife Donna Summer about his parents' divorce. In 1980, the song was recorded and released by Dolly Parton and hit #1 on the U.S. country charts in May 1980, and recorded by Reba McEntire in 1995. Sudano spent two decades managing Summer's career. They toured together, with Sudano playing keyboards and singing background vocals. In 1984, Sudano wrote "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin' (Too Good to Be True)" with Michael Omartian, which Jermaine Jackson and Michael Jackson recorded as a duet for the album Jermaine Jackson, and in 1985 was Grammy nominated Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. He co-wrote four songs on Summer's She Works Hard For The Money album. If you grew up in the 70s then you would surely have heard the music of Bruce Sudano, Born in Brooklyn, New York Sudano co-founded the band Alive N Kickin’ which featured the Tommy James penned “Tighter, Tighter.” In 1977 he met Donna Summer, who would become his wife of 32 years and together they wrote such popular hits as “Heaven Knows,” and “Bad Girls” to name a few. Bruce always had a solo career of his own. In this candid interview with host Robin Milling, Sudano talks about his new album 21st Century World which speaks about his social and political concerns and who is accountable to what is going on in society. He tells Robin what inspired such songs as "Coney Island Days;" a nod to the little boy that still lives inside him and "When Cinderella Dies;" his journey of self-discovery entering back into the dating world and the harsh realization of how marriage is viewed today. Bruce also talks about his talented daughters two of which broke into showbusiness themselves -- Brooklyn stars in the NBC series Taken -- and Amanda fronts the band Johnnyswim. Bruce also reveals exciting new details about the upcoming musical that he is helming which pays tribute to Summer's life and legacy.

Donna Summer was the queen of disco so it was very poignant that I spoke with her in the last year of the 80s, the decade where she reigned supreme. Donna had just  celebrated her 40th birthday the year before so our conversation was very personal as she spoke about her hopes and dreams for her children, and ironically fears for them as the new decade approached. But most importantly she was looking forward to getting out on the road which she loved most, performing for her fans. My most favorite memory was getting whisked away to her show in Atlantic City in the late 80s by limousine, spending time with her daughters Mimi and Brooklyn, named for her husband Bruce Sudano's childhood home, and then having a private dinner at midnight in the hotel talking, laughing, eating, and feeling like a part of her life in that moment in time. Donna Summer's light may have dimmed, but her music will never be forgotten.
