Seattle-born, Ethan Skuija, has always been a dominant pitcher. He dominated as a kid growing up in Canada, in junior college in California, and in division one baseball playing for CSU Bakersfield. None of this changed since he decided to take his career overseas after missing the draft. At the time of this interview, Ethan was about 6 weeks into a winter ball stint in Australia for the 2022-2023 season, his second season overseas that saw him go on to dominate. He was fresh off a dominant season in the Czech Republic where he posted a 0.62 ERA in 47.2 innings of work, with a whopping 90 strikeouts in what many regard as a strong hitting league. Although Ethan was not a member of our website, he was a pitcher we could not ignore when recruiting for our Globetrotters team that would compete at Prague Baseball Week against the likes of the Spanish and Czech National teams. In this interview, we talk about Ethan's career in baseball, his mental approach to the game, the unmatched energy he brings to the dugout when not pitching, and of course, all the goodness about his experience playing baseball overseas thus far. Since this interview, Ethan has gone on to pitch for the Savannah Party Animals in 2023 —a role he claims he was "born for"— and then finished his 2023 summer in the Atlantic League with the Staten Island FerryHawks. Ethan's story is far from over and there will definitely be a part two to this interview.

Eric Shuffler, president of the Staten Island FerryHawks (Atlantic League), joins Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard to discuss the creation of the team, the work in reviving the team's scenic waterfront ballpark and how it will offer more than just baseball as a community center.Topics discussed in this podcast:·      Unused since the 2019 season, SIUH Community Park--the former Richmond County Bank Ballpark--required millions in renovations for use as a working facility. Maintenance had been deferred for many years, while other essential components were reaching end of life for a 20-plus-year-old facility. Upgrading HVAC systems and elevators isn't sexy, but were essential. Also essential: the installation of synthetic turf, allowing for more events like concerts, graduations and youth baseball. Concessions were updated as well; seat replacement is now set for 2023.·      The FerryHawks moniker came after a very open name-the-team contest. After an open call for monikers, there were over 2,000 submissions, which was pared down first to seven and five. In the end, fans chose FerryHawks; Eric describes how that came to be.·      Supply-chain issues were front and center in the team development, ranging from delays in ballpark components to issues with hats stranded on shipping containers overseas.Despite the issues, the team had a successful debut:Staten Island FerryHawks debut at renovated ballparkJesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is editor of Ballpark Digest and founder/publisher at August Publications.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #125 features a rare triple play as we speak with former Major League Baseball player, Nelson Figueroa, Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee, David Knight, and Los Angeles Angels spring training correspondent, Gary Looney Nelson Figueroa loves baseball, a fact that cannot be denied.  Drafted 833rd overall by the New York Mets in the 30th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball draft, the man affectionately known as Figgy spent the next 19 years playing in the Major Leagues as well as other leagues all over the world, not just for the money, but because he loved playing ball.  in 2015, shortly after hanging up his spikes for good, he began his second career phase as the pre and post-game analyst for the New York Mets broadcasts on SNY.  All of this is discussed on the show, but we will have to have him back on as a few days after we spoke he began career phase three as the new pitching coach for the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. David Knight was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2016 in the business/industry category.  He is the President and founder of Ole Hickory Pits, a leading manufacturer of commercial and residential barbecue smoker ovens sold worldwide.  David is one of those rare individuals who knew from a very early age what he wanted to do for a career.  He started with a restaurant and later began manufacturing and selling his own pits.  You can learn more about Ole Hickory Pits at https://www.olehickorypits.com/   David has touched the lives of so many people, but is really so humble and respectful of the the numerous individuals who love live fire cooking and admire his role in BBQ.            Gary Looney makes his long awaited return.  Jeff first met Gary in 2020 at the Los Angeles Angels spring training camp complex in Arizona and a friendship quickly developed.  Gary appeared with us on episodes 56 and 87.  He once again offers great insight on a lockout delayed spring training and offers his thoughts on what to expect this season.  Having him on has become an annual tradition and his baseball knowledge is a great addition to any episode.            We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.
