Plus, on this week's transportation segment — the newly redesigned MTA subway map, a fatal crash on a known dangerous roadway, and why the Staten Island Ferry only connects to Manhattan.

(airdate: 1.24.25) Colin Jost and wife Scarlett Johansson seem to be at odds over Colin's purchase of a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry with ex SNL-er Pete Davidson. The idea was to retrofirt to become and entertainment venue/restaurant/hotel/gift shop. So far it's just docked in its original condition when bought "as is" back in 2023. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are reuniting for something "Harry and Sally" esque, they posted a photo of them on a couch together, Billy's even wearing a cable knit sweater. The post is a tease for something, That's all we know so far. Kenny Chesney will be the first Country music artist to perform at Sphere, Las Vegas beginning in May. If it's your first time (or even 3rd or 4th) visiting NYC, you should be aware of some common mistakes to avoid! Thinking you have to stay in Times Square. You don't need to stay in Times Square, but you should stay in Manhattan and you should stay within 5-10 minutes of a subway station. You can take public transit from every single airport. You don't have to take an Uber or Lyft! Download our free transportation guide here. You don't have to engage with people who are trying to talk to you on the street (pedi cabs, CD people, breakdancers, characters in Times Square, comedy shows, Staten Island Ferry). Most of them are trying to take advantage of you. Avoid eating at (most) food carts unless you know it's reputable. Unless you can look up reviews about it online, don't eat there. You do NOT need to buy a subway card. There is no benefit to buying the week-long pass because the discount gets applied automatically when you use Omny, the tap to pay service. You can always tap a credit card that has a tap to pay or use Apple Pay on your phone. This Episode's You'll Have to Check It Out Segment: Terra Blues Terra Blues Jazz Club ($20 cover on the weekends). You are paying to get in, and once you are in, you can stay as long as you want. First come, first served seating, but some reservations are available (until around 8pm) if you plan ahead. Terra Blues has talented artists, great cocktails, and a huge whiskey list. Bonus Mistake: Don't walk slow on sidewalks and especially don't take up the entire sidewalk! See our full sidewalk guide here.
Ben here, today I'm coming to you with a very special episode featuring Jen Sillen. To ring in the fall season Jen and I board the Staten Island Ferry and play our favorite autumnal tracks. We discuss our favorite white women of the 2010's, China Mac vs. Moo Deng (and why China's owner won't come on the Pod), Chappell vs. Gaga, me low-key feeling bad about bullying Mitski off twitter, and then we visit World Trade Center 7 to talk about what supplements we do. Happy Fall mamas!

Hailing from the largely unsung streets of Staten Island, Ferry Townes emerges as a poignant voice in the indie music scene, channeling the raw, unfiltered emotions of its frontwoman, songwriter, Julia Gargano. The name Ferry Townes is an homage to The Staten Island Ferry, a symbol of Julia's upbringing commuting to Manhattan for school, family days, dates, and watching the Statue of Liberty. Having had her public debut on American Idol Season 18 and finishing in the top 7, Gargano's debut collection is an eclectic blend of acoustic and electronic elements, reminiscent of bands like HAIM and boygenius, yet with a distinct melodic narrative and alternative pop flair. Ferry Townes is a vivid musical exploration of feminine identity and growing pains, sprinkled with anxious flashes and flirty obsessions. To keep it simple, here are 7 categories of things to do that will help make your decisions easier. Here are our local recommendations for the best things to do for your weekend trip to NYC. We recommend doing at least one thing from each main category or more. If there's a category you're stoked on, do more in that category. 1- Go to a Broadway Show Get cheap Broadway tickets through a ticketing app (TodayTix or Ticketmaster) or TKTS Booth The TKTS Booth can take 30-120 minutes in line. Go to the Lincoln Center location for shorter wait times. If you can avoid weekends, do it. If you want to see two shows, you can skip the line by showing your ticket from the previous day at the booth 2- Go to an Observation Deck The Edge is probably our favorite One World Trade (see Downtown) Top of the Rock 3- Go to Chelsea Little Island Chelsea Market Pier 57 Highline 4- Go to a Museum Museum of Modern Art American Museum of Natural History The Metropolitan Museum of Art aka MET 9/11 Museum (see Downtown) 5- Go Shopping 5th Ave Soho Rockefeller Center Hudson Yards Columbus Circle 6- Go Downtown See the One World Trade Center (and/or do the Observation Deck) See the Statue of Liberty from a distance (here) or go to the Statue & Ellis Island, but it takes a LONG time, about 4-6 hours. Don't get scammed on tickets going to the Statue; buy them beforehand. Or, take the Staten Island Ferry for a closer view. It's free and takes anywhere from 60-90 minutes round trip. Charging Bull/Wall Street 9/11 Museum, be prepared for a very somber yet well-presented experience. 7- Explore Central Park Heckscher Playground Balto Statue Central Park Carousel Literary Walk Alice in Wonderland Statue Conservatory Water Loeb Boathouse Bethesda Terrace & Fountain The Mall This video/route shows you how to do all the best spots in Central Park in roughly 2-3 hours. This Episode's You'll Have to Check It Out Segment – Eataly NYC Eataly has three locations in New York, Flatiron, Downtown, and Soho and 20 across the globe. They have locations in places like Dallas and Las Vegas, and even as far as Istanbul and Japan. From the Eataly website: “The idea was simple: to gather high-quality food at sustainable and reasonable prices, to celebrate Italian biodiversity, and to create an informal, natural, and simple place to EAT, SHOP, and LEARN — all under one roof.” On top of a robust collection of authentic Italian groceries, bites, and drinks, most Eataly locations have restaurants and bars inside the store. It's the perfect spot to grab some food for a picnic at one of NYC's amazing parks! The Flatiron location has a rooftop restaurant, the Downtown location has a beautiful wine and cocktail bar, and the Soho location has a pizza and pasta focused restaurant. Be sure to check out their events for when you're in town! Eataly often has unlimited wine and food fests, cooking classes, and more. Check out the NYC locations here (links open Google Maps in new tab): Downtown Flatiron Soho
It was a scene straight out of an action movie: specifically The Bourne Identity. On September 16, 2008, the captain of a Staten Island Ferry saw a woman floating face down in the Hudson River, near the Statue of Liberty. Horrified and thinking they found a dead body, two deckhands jumped in a rescue boat and went to her. When they reached the woman, one picked her up by her ankles, while another picked her up by her shoulders. To everyone's shock, the woman took a gasp of air and started crying. This is how Hannah Upp was found after she went missing– the first time.Over the next decade, Hannah Upp, a young, well-liked teacher, would go missing two more times. After her first two rescues, she had no idea where she had been or how she had spent her time. On September 14, 2017, Hannah was living in St. Thomas, on the U.S. Virgin Islands. She had survived Hurricane Irma, and three days before Hurricane Maria was poised to hit, Hannah Upp disappeared for a third time. Did she perish in the water, as many people believe, or is she still out there somewhere, with no idea who she is?Anyone with information regarding Hannah Upp's disappearance is urged to contact the Virgin Islands Police Department at 340-772-5605.Buy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeSubmit a caseFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeFor a full list of our sources, please visit our blogBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/and-then-they-were-gone--5360779/support.

Author and seasoned travel writer Gary Shteyngart had never been on a ship larger than the Staten Island Ferry before he embarked on the inaugural voyage of the “Icon of the Seas,” the world's largest cruise ship. Proudly sporting a “Daddy's Little Meatball” t-shirt that he hoped would be a conversation starter and aiming to make new friends, Shteyngart instead experienced loneliness and despair. He chronicles his experience in the Atlantic Magazine piece “Crying Myself to Sleep on the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever.” Shteyngart joins us to talk about this journey, his life as a travel writer and the vacations that can make you feel part of — or alienated from — the rest of the world. Guest: Gary Shteyngart, writer. His latest piece for the Atlantic is titled "Crying Myself to Sleep on the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever"; author, "Our Country Friends, "Little Failure: A Memoir," and "Super Sad True Love Story."
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ferry Townes over Zoom video!Ferry Townes releases new single “T.G.F.K” (Thank God For Kyle) via Licorice Pizza Records. The track is Julia Gargano's second release following “Be Here” under her new project Ferry Townes. An ode to her best friend, “T.G.F.K” includes a breathtaking chorus composed of isolated, layered choral vocals, a canonic bedroom pop guitar bridge, and lyrics imbued with sincerity: “just got nothing to do without you.” Sonically captivating, “T.G.F.K” serves as a reminder that everyone needs, and deserves a best friend.“T.G.F.K, which stands for Thank God For Kyle, is about my bestest friend. The initial idea came from being so grateful that our relationship is what it is- that we'll never have to fall in love and break up, but we will just be friends forever.” Gargano shares. The accompanying video, Directed by Stephanie Saias, perfectly encapsulates that forever kind of best friend love between Julia and Kyle. The sounds of Ferry Townes is an eclectic blend of acoustic and electronic elements, reminiscent of bands like HAIM and boygenius, yet with a distinct melodic narrative and alternative pop flair. She shares “Every page of lyrics tries to be closure to a tumultuous day, trying to compost the hard shit and turn it into energy, heartbreak into audacity, anxiousness into meditation. Nothing about life right now is normal and we are all off-roading emotionally and these songs should feel like a 4x4 for listeners.”Born and raised in Staten Island, the name Ferry Townes pays homage to The Staten Island Ferry, a symbol of Julia's teen years commuting to LaGuardia High School, family days, dates, and watching the Statue of Liberty pass by. She shares, "Staten Island, often underestimated, grows more irreplaceable to me every time I'm on the road.”From her deep Staten Island roots, grows a vivid musical exploration of feminine identity and growing pains, sprinkled with anxious flashes and flirty obsessions. Today's single “Be Here” is just the start of the Ferry Townes' melodic and coming of age journey. She shares, “I can literally see my growth as a person when I look at these songs. They were written over the span of the past 3 years, which were a rollercoaster. Mid twenties are such a weird age. Ferry Townes was born out of a need to say things we should but don't. Our songs are like those intense, never-sent letters, filled with raw overshares that one might only say with brave thumbs, but not their mouths." It's Oscar season! I was so thrilled to see ‘Past Lives', the astounding slow-moving-yet-somehow-fast-paced debut film from Celine Song nominated for Best Picture. Best Picture! On her very first film. Oh, and no biggie, Best Screenplay, too. This following a slew of other noms like 5 Golden Globes, 3 Critics Choice Awards, 3 BAFTAs, and a recent Director's Guild of America win for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for a First-Time Feature Film. Leslie and I loved ‘Past Lives' so much we went back to theaters to see it again. The film had such unique energy as it told the story of Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends in South Korea, who lose touch when Nora's family emigrates, and then seem to be forever-chasing the goodbye they never had. The film opens with a late-night bar scene of Hae Sung visiting Nora and her husband in New York before scrolling back to tell the unpredictable, jumping-around-the-decades story of how they got there. Every shot was such a sumptuous visual feast — from silhouetted lineups for the Staten Island Ferry to broken-transmission Skype calls to a final waiting-for-an-Uber scene that deserves its own prize. And the writing! Crisp. Punctuating. So much said ... with so little. ‘Past Lives' is a truly magical film that I can't recommend enough. 96% on Rotten Tomatoes also means there's a great chance your movie-going pal will love it, too. I was thrilled ‘Past Lives' director, writer, and filmmaker wunderkind Celine Song joined me on 3 Books from her New York apartment to talk about the Korean concept of in-yun, why we're drawn to stories, what unique role millennials play as the last pre-Internet-immersive generation, how a cannibalistic orgy makes for great literature, a surprising cure for loneliness, why sensory deprivation increases chemistry, the other job of a director, Celine's 3 most formative books, and much, much more... Let's flip the page into Chapter 133 now...
Due to snowfall in the region, New York City public schools are closed and remote learning is in progress, but many students are struggling with login issues. Meanwhile, flight tracking website Flight Aware reports slowed service at airports in the region with over 175 canceled flights at Laguardia, Newark and JFK airports and nearly 90 delays. Staten Island Ferry service is limited as well. Finally, WNYC's Michael Hill speaks with Zachary Iscol, Commissioner of New York City's Office of Emergency Management, to discuss how the city is responding to the snow.

During the highest turkey consumption period of the year, we bring you a This American Life tradition: stories of turkeys, chickens, geese, ducks, fowl of all kinds—real and imagined—and their mysterious hold over us. Prologue: Ira Glass talks with Scharlette Holdman, who works with defense teams on high profile death row cases, and who has not talked to a reporter in more than 25 years. Why did she suddenly end the moratorium on press? Because her story is about something important: namely, a beautiful chicken. (2 minutes)Act One: Scharlette Holdman's story continues, in which she and the rest of a legal defense team try to save a man on death row by finding a star witness — a chicken with a specific skill. (10 minutes)Act Two: Yet another testimony to the power chickens have over our hearts and minds. Jack Hitt reports on an opera about Chicken Little. It's performed with dressed-up styrofoam balls, it's sung in Italian and, no kidding, able to make grown men cry. (14 minutes)Act Three: Ira accompanies photographer Tamara Staples as she attempts to photograph chickens in the style of high fashion photography. The chickens are not very cooperative. (15 minutes)Act Four: Kathie Russo's husband was Spalding Gray, who was best known for delivering monologues onstage—like "Monster in a Box," and "Swimming to Cambodia." On January 10, 2004, he went missing. Witnesses said they saw him on the Staten Island Ferry that night. Two months later, his body was pulled out of the East River. Kathie tells the story of the night he disappeared, and about how, in the weeks following, she and each of their three children were visited by a bird, who seemed to be delivering a message to them. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-new-york-city/ Hear about travel to New York City as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rebecca Shoval from Not Just Tourists NYC about her adopted home in the city that never sleeps. Why should you go to New York City? Rebecca says, "I think someone should come to New York for so many reasons. I think it's this incredibly vibrant place. It exudes life and I find walking around the city, it really just gives you energy. It's also this vibrant multicultural place where you can really see the way that there's so much commitment to the city and to the culture and to people really living in something resembling harmony next to each other... or at least ignoring each other and not getting in each other's business. There are so many different things to do." Rebecca says that the city has changed since COVID-19. She highlights how the city has recovered and transformed from the pandemic's impacts, offering a unique perspective on what makes New York a vibrant and dynamic place. Rebecca recommends exploring different boroughs and neighborhoods within New York City. The city's diversity is reflected in its various neighborhoods, each with its own cultural influences and attractions. She particularly recommends Queens, known for its ethnic neighborhoods like Jackson Heights and Flushing, offering immersive food tours and unique experiences. Public transportation is an essential part of the New York experience. Rebecca emphasizes the convenience of using apps like MyMTA, MTA Bus Time, and Train Time to navigate the city's extensive subway, bus, and train systems. The ease of using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay to access public transit now makes travel efficient and hassle-free. The Staten Island Ferry offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Southern Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. It's a free ferry that provides a unique and picturesque perspective of iconic landmarks. Rebecca suggests taking this ferry to get a feel for the city's beauty from the water. The Tenement Museum provides insights into New York's immigrant history, showcasing how various ethnic communities lived and worked. She would recommend that museum or the New York Historical Society instead of a trip to the World Trade Center Memorial for those interested in history. Walking across iconic bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge provides breathtaking city views. Additionally, taking city ferries offers an alternative way to see New York's skyline from the water. Rebecca recommends seeing New York from above but suggests skipping touristy skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and opting for bars or restaurants with panoramic views. The Graduate Hotel's rooftop bar on Roosevelt Island is recommended for its exceptional view of Manhattan and surrounding areas. You have to check out the entertainment scene in New York. Broadway is amazing for its incredible talent and performances, while jazz enthusiasts are advised to explore smaller venues like Arthur's Tavern, Cellar Dog, and Somewhere Nowhere for a more interactive experience. Try visiting parks like Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, and Domino's Sugar Factory, which offer unique recreational spaces and city views. For ionic New York food, you have to consider getting bagels and pizza. Joe's Pizza and Tompkins Square Bagels are Rebecca's favorites. Try street food, especially halal carts which are much more prevalent than hot dog stands in New York these days. Try some cuisine you can't get at home like Caribbean food, regional Chinese, or Burmese cuisine. Eat something at a bodega. Rebecca's favorite restaurants include the experimental restaurant Fulgrances in Brooklyn which is notable for its rotating chefs and wine selection. Another favorite is Little Myanmar in the East Village, which serves Burmese food. She recommends the pasta at Nona Dora's (even the Gluten-free). Reservations are advised due to ongoing restaurant challenges post-pandemic. Use the Rezy app. Wear comfortable shoes, carry a reusable water bottle, and bring a sense of adventure as you explore one of the world's greatest cities, New York City.
