Durou enquanto durou a escassez alheia. A China sabe a diferença. Falta saber se Brasília também sabe.

Cole James welcomes husband and wife duo Alfonzo and Gwendolyn Jones to share their powerful transformation story through the Grief Recovery Method. Gwendolyn first discovered the method during a personal season of feeling lost and purposeless. After reading The Grief Recovery Handbook on the recommendation of her pastor, she got certified and experienced a profound emotional breakthrough. Her personal transformation inspired Alfonzo to get certified as well—even though he originally didn't think he “needed” it. Together, they used the tools not just individually, but to heal their marriage—most notably by completing “relationship graphs” and grief letters for each other, which unearthed years of unresolved pain and brought deep emotional healing. They describe how grief recovery shifted their communication from surface-level and combative to emotionally honest and heart-centered, using tools like active listening, emotional paraphrasing, and intentional vulnerability. As parents, the method helped them radically change how they connect with their children. They started creating safe, open environments where feelings were heard and validated—replacing harmful “be strong” messaging with empathy and emotional tools. Gwendolyn shares how she had to re-learn affection with her daughter, and Alfonzo highlights how seeing grief as 100% real for each person—even if it's just a lost crayon—changed how he parented. The couple now integrates these tools into leadership coaching and everyday life, encouraging others to do the personal work that leads to relational healing and generational change. They emphasize that grief is not limited to death or divorce but includes losses of identity, safety, trust, and more. Their closing message: doing this work personally is essential before we can lead, parent, or love well. Where to find them: Gwendolyn: GwendolynJJones.com Alfonzo: TrifectaPrime.com

What happens when your mission to support underrepresented communities in academia suddenly comes under political scrutiny? And how can your association stay true to its values while navigating legal and societal change? In this episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda interviews Alfonzo Alexander, President and CEO of The PhD Project. Alfonzo discusses:How The PhD Project recruits business professionals from diverse backgrounds to pursue PhDs and become business school faculty. The organization's impact in increasing the number of underrepresented faculty from just 250 in 1994 to 1,600 today. Why the organization is still vital, as faculty of color make up less than 4% of all business school professors. The “mentor effect,” wherein representation among faculty encourages underrepresented students to pursue academic and business careers. The shift in application policies to remove demographic requirements in response to investigations under the Trump administration. The organization's efforts to support members through mentorship, community-building, and guidance—not financial aid.Continued strength in the PhD pipeline and a highly attended 2025 conference, even amidst institutional pressures.New revenue diversification efforts, including partnerships, masterclasses, and showcasing thought leaders from within the PhD Project community.References:The PhD Project WebsiteAssociations Thrive episode 69 with Blane Ruschak, former President of The PhD Project

This last week has been incredible for me. After almost 5 years of being connected to different aspects of the work at the farm in La Junquera, first through my connection with Silvia Quarta the leader of Camp Altiplano, the first in the global Ecosystem Restoration Communities network back when I worked at the restoration coordinator, then through collaborations with Alfonzo and Yanniek through the Climate farming community, and also with their incredible staff of Clara, Jeronimo, and Jacobo in coordination and organizing, I was finally able to visit them in person. In the first few days we did some course planning and taught a two day intensive on water resource management for farmers. I stayed a few days to talk about their new collective project to restore the watershed of the Quipar river, and then represented Climate Farmers in a Benchmarks soil health program. It has been surreal to meet the heroes who are working tirelessly to pioneer regenerative management in their semi arid location and to build friendships that go far beyond the occasional zoom call. That brings me to our interview today with Silvia Quarta.
