Today's True Weird Stuff - The Arkansas Ghost January, 1929. A man named Connie Franklin moved to Stone County, Arkansas. The alleged 20-something began courting a 16-year-old girl named Tiller Ruminer, and on March 9th, 1929, the two were on their way to obtain their marriage license when a group of men attacked them. Tiller survived the brutal assault, but Franklin was tortured to death, and his body was burned in the woods. Months later, a pile of ashes and charred bones was discovered, leading to a bizarre moment in history that included Connie Franklin himself testifying at his own murder trial. And thus, the tale of the Arkansas Ghost was born.
The Boone County Recorder of Deeds office is a critical one that is often overlooked. You will visit Boone County Recorder of Deeds Bob Nolte's office when you get married, if you're refinancing a house, for some land transfers and for military discharge paperwork. Mr. Nolte joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable". Mr. Nolte earned his bachelor's degree in history from New York State's Binghamton University and earned his master's degree in education administration from USC. He worked in the Mizzou Athletics department under then-Athletic Director Mike Alden in the compliance office and served as director of compliance too. Mr. Nolte praises Mr. Alden, describing him as a great leader and adding that he has a photographic memory with names. One of the issues Mr. Nolte raised awareness about during the interview is deed fraud, which he describes as "any type of transferring ownership illegally," He says it can take numerous different methods. While Mr. Nolte says there have been no examples of residential deed fraud in Boone County, he wants everyone to be aware of the issue and to know about it. Mr. Nolte brought up Graceland in Memphis. A woman from southern Missouri's Stone County pleaded guilty in February to federal charges for trying to defraud Elvis Presley's family of millions of dollars and to steal the family's ownership interest in Graceland in Memphis. Mr. Parry and Recorder of Deeds Nolte also discussed senior real estate applications and REAL ID during the interview. Starting in May, every air traveler 18 and older will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card or another ID form accepted by TSA to board federally-regulated domestic flights. Mr. Nolte also discussed the good working relationship that the various Boone County elected officials have:
Matt Crawford speaks with author Kit Karson about her book, Nefarious Intent: A Sheriff Elliott Mystery. Holiday festivities in tiny Anderson, Montana take an unexpected turn when a welfare check becomes a murder investigation. Stone County deputy Tom Edwards discovers the frozen corpses of a local couple bound to chairs at their home in the Moonlight Mountains. The couple's son and daughter-in-law soon go missing, the only clue a puddle of blood. A tragic bus accident and embezzled church funds add suspects and complicate motives. Stone County Sheriff Peter Elliott and his crew are once again faced with more suspects than clues and an increasingly hostile press in their struggle to solve these murders.

This week, Ozark original old time harmonica and guitar duo Seth Shumate & Roy Pilgrim recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with this dynamic musical duo. A feature performance by renowned singer George Hulsey this week as well. Ozark original Seth Shumate plays harmonica in ways that one does not hear too often anymore. His phrasing, technique and style go back to the pre war days of traditional American music when the harmonica was a lyrical and melodic instrument. Another Ozark original, Roy Pilgrim is arguably Arkansas' premier Old-Time fiddler. Like his counterpart, Roy takes his musical cues from traditional American old time but with an emphasis on fiddle tunes from the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri. Roy and Seth also perform together as part of the Ozark Highballers, who have earned a well-deserved reputation as one of today's premier Old-Time groups and dance bands. Originally from Louisiana, George Hulsey moved to Mountain View, Arkansas a few years back and has become a well known singer in the local Stone County music scene. George is accompanied on this performance by multi-instrumentalist Duane Porterfield, fiddler Mary Parker, bassist Chris Smith and vocalist Carolina Mendoza. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of Ozark original harmonica legend Percy Copeland playing the traditional tune “Wabash Cannonball,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins discusses the Ozarks' influence at the “Festival of Festivals,” the first National Folk Festival held in St. Louis, Missouri in 1934. My special guest is author Brooks Blevins, who's here to discuss his book Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South. Get it on Amazon. In 1929, in a remote county of the Arkansas Ozarks, the gruesome murder of harmonica-playing drifter Connie Franklin and the brutal rape of his teenage fiancée captured the attention of a nation on the cusp of the Great Depression. National press from coast to coast ran stories of the sensational exploits of night-riding moonshiners, powerful "Barons of the Hills," and a world of feudal oppression in the isolation of the rugged Ozarks. The arrest of five local men for both crimes and the confusion and superstition surrounding the trial and conviction gave Stone County a dubious and short-lived notoriety. Closely examining how the media interpreted the story and its regional setting, Brooks Blevins recounts the gripping events of the murder investigation and trial, where a man claiming to be the murder victim--the "Ghost" of the Ozarks--appeared to testify. Local conditions in Stone County, which had no electricity and only one long-distance telephone line, frustrated the dozen or more reporters who found their way to the rural Ozarks. The developments following the arrests often prompted reporters' caricatures of the region: accusations of imposture and insanity, revelations of hidden pasts and assumed names, and threats of widespread violence. Locating the past squarely within the major currents of American history, Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South paints a convincing backdrop to a story that remains riddled more than 80 years later with mystery mo. This week, legendary songwriter, performer, folklorist, historian and Ozark original Jimmy Driftwood recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Dave Smith gives an historical portrait of the life of this remarkable Ozarker. There was never a more popular, outspoken or controversial musician or personality to come out of Stone County, Arkansas than James Corbitt Morris (better known as Jimmy Driftwood.) Driftwood was a driving force behind the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and a successful singer songwriter who penned “The Battle of New Orleans” and “Tennessee Stud” among other notable songs. Jimmy helped put Stone County on the musical map and left a legacy that is still talked about to this day. Our program this week features special and seldom heard songs from some of Jimmy's archival Ozark Folk Center performances. Mark Jones' “From the Vault” segment offers an archival recording from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives of Jimmy Driftwood demonstrating playing a tune on a hickory leaf. This week, outlaw country music icons the legendary Billy Don Burns and his protege Josh Morningstar recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these artistic outlaws. As country music moved towards a more slick commercial “Nashville sound” in the 1970s, some of its most notable artists bucked the trend. Influential country musicians such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings fought back against the major studios and won the right to record their music the way they wanted. With its roots in blues, honky tonk, rockabilly, and rock & roll, outlaw country has become a musical genre all its own. In Stone County, Arkansas, we have a legendary outlaw singer-songwriter right here in our community. Since the early days of outlaw country, Billy Don Burns has been a go to songwriter for artists like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Now in his 70s, Billy Don is still at it. BDB crisscrosses the country on his Harley Davidson while producing hit songs recorded by country music legacy Shooter Jennings, rising country music star Cody Jinks, and many others. Also featured on this episode of OHR is Billy Don's protege Josh Morningstar. An up and coming outlaw, Josh Morningstar has also had hit songs recorded by Cody Jinks. “Billy Don Burns is one of the few remaining original outlaw country music singer songwriters. This long and hard road paved with a honky tonk reality has taken him from Stone County, Arkansas and around the world touring for the past fifty years. He has been described as The Warrior Poet who has gained the respect of some of the greatest songwriters including Billy Joe Shaver, David Lynn Jones, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. Some of BDB's critically acclaimed albums are ‘Desperate Men' with Hank Cochran, and “Heroes, Friends and Other Troubled Souls” with Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson, and Tanya Tucker. Johnny Paycheck, Willie, Connie Smith, Mel Tillis, and Sammy Kershaw have recorded his songs. A few artists that have recently recorded his songs are Cody Jinks, Colter Wall, and Whitey Morgan. Other BDB albums are ‘Graveyard in Montgomery,' ‘Train Called Lonesome,' and the live album produced by Shooter Jennings in Joshua Tree, California called ‘A Night in Room 8,' the room where Gram Parsons died. The newest album ‘The Country Blues,' is BDB's latest effort.” - The Hollywood Times “A curious and fresh combination of grit and humor, Josh Morningstar is knocking down stereotypes with his worn boots and unforgettable raspy voice. He is a small-town boy that originally hails from Funkstown, Maryland, and he carries those roots in a suitcase with him everywhere he goes. His small-town charm is evident in the way he greets people, and in the conversational way that he weaves the stories of his life into his music. “In front of the bright lights and behind the microphone isn't where Morningstar feels most at home. Named the 2018 Texas Radio Songwriter of the Year, he and his Kristofferson signed guitar have knocked out melodies in dingy hotels all across the country. He's written songs alongside Kendell Marvel, Channing Wilson, Autumn McEntire, and many more. Morningstar was also the writer of several Cody Jinks songs, including his #1 hit “Must Be The Whiskey.” - https://joshmorningstar.com In this week's “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1975 archival recording of Ozark original Uncle Floyd Holland performing the traditional tune “Nellie Grey,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley describes the Ozark journey of famed folk song collector Alan Lomax.

Thank you for joining us for today's message. Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday and the power of the Holy Spirit in our presence. Our message today is influenced by 1 Peter 2:4-12, and is titled "A Movement in the Midst of Church Tension, COVID-19, and Racial Divide." In today's message, Pastor Harold unpacks our scripture reading and shows us the connection between Peter's message and the calling we all have on our lives as kingdom people. We look at how we are each a stone in the temple and that by coming together, we can experience the Glory of God in a way we cannot as individuals. Lastly, we apply our scripture reading to our returning to live church on June 7, 2020, response to COVID-19, and the racial divide and unrest surrounding the death of George Floyd. Your heart will be challenged and hopefully convicted by today's message.
Keisha Ridpath is a graduate of the Stone County, MO Drug Court program—6 years out. She shares candidly about her life of drugs, arrests, and what the drug court program did to set her straight. Today she views herself as a woman with a future and is determined to give that hope for a better tomorrow to her children, her family, her friends.Coming from the destitution of no one to love and care for her, heading into a life of drugs and crime, ironically her life was turned around by an arrest and she emerged instead as a compassionate woman leading others to a better life with hope. Because the drug court team saw her as a person and believed she could use the tools they provided, she has transformed and is now a homeowner, manager at her job, and can provide the care for her children that she missed growing up. Her most important message is to look beyond the problem behavior to see the person. She also makes it clear this is not a temporary change during an 18-month program, it is a lifetime commitment. You will enjoy her hearty laughter as she carries her message to you in this conversation.
