As the curtains draw close on the fantastical production of "Seussical" at Theatre Harrisburg, audiences are left enchanted by the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss characters brought to life on stage. Since its opening on April 26th, the musical has captivated hearts and minds with its tale of friendship, loyalty, and community. In an exclusive interview with Lorien Reese Mahay, the Executive Director of Theatre Harrisburg, and Becky Mease, the chair of the board of Directors, insights were shared on the success of the season and the compelling reasons why theater enthusiasts should seize the opportunity to witness the magic of "Seussical" before it bids adieu. "The response to 'Seussical' has been overwhelmingly positive," Mahay beams, reflecting on the journey of Horton the Elephant as he embarks on a daring adventure to safeguard Jojo and the Whos. "It's a testament to the enduring appeal of Dr. Seuss's timeless characters and themes." Mease echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the profound resonance of the production's themes of friendship, loyalty, and community. "In a world filled with challenges, 'Seussical' reminds us of the importance of standing together and supporting one another," she asserts. Adapted from Dr. Seuss's beloved stories, "Seussical" follows Horton's quest to protect the Whos, encountering trials and tribulations along the way. From facing ridicule to braving danger, Horton's unwavering dedication is a poignant reminder of the power of perseverance. "Seussical" not only delights audiences with its vibrant performances but also provides a platform for creative expression through its inventive set designs, lighting, and costumes. The musical's alternate orchestration offers a fresh take, catering to diverse interpretations of the beloved characters. With its universal appeal and family-friendly charm, "Seussical" promises an unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. As the final performances approach, Mahay and Mease extend a heartfelt invitation for theater enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Dr. Seuss one last time. And as the curtain falls on "Seussical," Theatre Harrisburg leaves an indelible mark on its audience, reminding them of the enduring power of imagination, friendship, and the triumph of the human spirit.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Where does OT fit in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) care? In this one hour course we'll dive into a comprehensive guideline for psoriatic arthritis treatment, which recommends patients utilize a mix of non-pharmacological tools, like occupational therapy. This article will help you brush up on psoriatic arthritis, see OT within a holistic approach to care, and appreciate the importance of individualized care (which we are so skilled in providing). After we review the article, we'll be joined by Duana Russell-Thomas, OTD, OTR/L, to discuss her innovative approach to arthritis care through a self-management program—and the funding that makes this possible. Her story—and this guideline—will leave you with practical takeaways for improving your care of PsA. When someone gets involved in the drug trade, violence usually isn't far behind. It's a dangerous path to tread where survival can hinge almost entirely upon alliances. If you piss off the wrong person, you might pay with your life. In the late 1980s, Missouri native Darrell Mease encountered an opportunity he couldn't turn down. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease's life on a deeply violent trajectory. It would escalate into an extreme act of revenge outside a serene cabin in the Ozark mountains where an entire family would be murdered. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.08.30.505868v1?rss=1 Authors: Martin-Cortecero, J., Isaias-Camacho, E. U., Boztepe, B., Ziegler, K., Mease, R. A., Groh, A. Abstract: Most brain circuits comprise intermingled neuronal populations with heterogeneous input and output connectivity, which limits the ability to unambiguously map how the circuit of interest synaptically links specific input pathways to specific downstream targets. By applying newly available transsynaptic and intersectional tracing tools to investigate input-output connectivity of the superior colliculus (SC), a conserved midbrain-node with extensive long-range connectivity throughout the brain, we identify hitherto unknown connectivity features underlying cortical control of SC sensory-motor transformations. We pinpoint a whisker region in the SC of mice as a node for the integration of somatosensory and motor cortical signals. Tracing input-defined pathways from brainstem, motor- and somatosensory cortices to the whisker SC and further on to collicular downstream targets in the midbrain and brainstem revealed that long-range inputs establish synaptic contacts with inhibitory and excitatory SC-output neurons, thereby providing monosynaptic trans-collicular pathways between specific cortical and subcortical circuits for somato-motor integration. Last week, Janssen announced results from a network meta-analysis (NMA) that showed that the biologic therapy guselkumab ranked highest for overall level of skin clearance. The NMA involved 33 phase 3 randomized clinical trials and 15 different targeted therapies including risakinumab and more. Philip J. Mease, MD, director of rheumatology research at the Swedish Rheumatology Research Group, spoke of how the biologic distinguished itself from other targeted therapies in the network meta-analyses, and how these kinds of analyses could aid physicians in treating patients affected by psoriasis.

Important Events May 14, 1840 Today is the birthday of the American poet, lyricist, and hymn-writer George Cooper. Today, George is remembered for his happy song lyrics, which were often set to music written by Stephen Foster. And George wrote a little poem dear to gardeners called, My Garden. When fields are green, and skies are fair, And summer fragrance fills the air, I love to watch the budding rose That in my pleasant garden grows; But when old Winter, fierce and free, Has hushed the murmur of the bee, And all the fields and hills are hid Beneath his snowy coverlid, Oh! then my only garden-spot Is just this little flower pot. May 14, 1938 On this day, the Canadian conservationist and naturalist Charles Joseph Sauriol wrote in his journal, “I have some most beautiful Pansies from the seeds of last year. Pansies are a surprise packet. You never know what to expect, and you are never disappointed if you [don't?] expect much." We found on Thursday night a section of Pine root with a Dogwood growing from its wood and rotted mold. Transplanted it to the Wild Flower garden. It will be exactly what I will require for certain Wild Flowers. Planted a Bleeding Heart. Have wanted to do so for several years. It's an old-fashioned flower. Mother always used to have one in her garden when I was a small boy.” Bleeding heart is in the poppy family. Additional common names for Bleeding heart include “lyre flower” and “lady-in-a-bath.” Native to Siberia, northern Asia, and North America, there are several cultivars for gardeners to consider, including ‘Alba,’ which has white flowers, ‘Gold Heart,’ which has yellow leaves; and ‘Valentine,’ which has red-and-white blossoms. Auntie Dogma’s Garden Spot blog says, “No other plant bears perfect heart-shaped flowers like those of the Bleeding Heart. If you press the flowers between the pages of a heavy book, you’ll have papery-thin little hearts to adorn letters or valentines. If you turn a flower upside down and pull the two halves apart, you’ll see a lady in a pink bathtub, or perhaps you’ll see a white lyre with strings of silk.” And then, she shares the interactive story of the bleeding heart that uses a blossom to tell the story. “(To begin narration of the story, hold a heart blossom in the palm of your hand.) Long ago, there lived a noble prince who tried in vain to win the heart of a very beautiful princess. The prince had brought the princess wonderful gifts from his travels far and wide. Yet, she had taken no notice of him. One day the prince returned from a long journey with very special gifts to surely win the love of the princess. First, he presented her with two magical pink bunnies. (Peel off the two outer petals and set them on their sides to display two little pink bunnies.) The princess only sighed and barely looked at the little bunnies. The hopeful prince had one more gift saved for last – he presented a pair of beautiful enchanted earrings. (Remove the two long white petals and hold them next to your ears.) Again, the princess hardly noticed the prince’s gift. Now the poor prince was utterly heartbroken. He could try no more to win the heart of the princess. He rose up, pulled a dagger from his sheath, and stabbed himself in the heart. (Remaining in the flower is a heart shape with the stamen, appearing as a dark green line down the center. Hold the heart up, carefully remove the dagger-like line, and plunge the dagger through the heart.) The princess was overcome by the dedication of the dying prince and his unending love for her. She realized too late that she loved him also. “Alas,” she cried out. “I have done wrong. My own heart is also broken. I shall bleed for my prince forevermore!” And her heart bleeds to this very day.” May 14, 1946 On this day, Paul Hindemith's composition When Lilacs Last in the Door-Yard Bloom'd: A Requiem «For Those We Love» premiered. The music was inspired by a poem of the same title by Walt Whitman, When Lilacs Last in the Door-Yard Bloom'd. Walt Whitman wrote his poem in the summer of 1865. The country was still mourning the assassination of President Lincoln. In 206 lines, Walt does not mention Lincoln’s name or the assassination. Instead, he uses nature and nature imagery to move the reader from grief to acceptance. Lincoln was killed in the springtime - on April 14, 1865. Walt was at his mother’s home when he heard the news. Later he recalled, “I remember… there were many lilacs in full bloom… I find myself always reminded of the great tragedy of that day by the sight and odor of these blossoms. It never fails.” When Walt Whitman was 54 years old, he suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed. He spent the next two years immersed in nature, and he believed that nature had helped heal him. He wrote, "How it all nourishes, lulls me, in the way most needed; the open air, the rye-fields, the apple orchards.” Unearthed Words But spring twilight found her barefoot in the garden, planting beans and helping me fill my pail with earthworms that were severed by her shovel. I thought I could nurse them back to health in the worm hospital I constructed beneath the irises. She encouraged me in this, always saying, “There is no hurt that can’t be healed by love.” ― Robin Wall Kimmerer, mother, plant ecologist, writer, and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants Grow That Garden Library Nature into Art by Thomas Christopher This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is The Gardens of Wave Hill. In this book, Thomas introduces us to Wave Hill - a garden that opened to the public in 1967. A public garden in the Bronx, Wave Hill is known for its daring and innovative horticulture. Thomas takes us on a tour of the different areas of the garden — the flower garden, wild garden, shade border, and conservatory. In addition, Thomas reviews the plants and design principles that underpin Wave Hill. Enchanting and inspiring, Wave Hill manages to delight and instruct gardeners all year long. This book is 296 pages of a private tour of a jewel of the Bronx - the iconic Wave Hill. You can get a copy of Nature into Art by Thomas Christopher and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $3 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart May 14, 1846 Today is the anniversary of the death of the American scientist, horticulturist, and physician James Mease. A son of Philadelphia, James was a passionate gardener, and he consistently referred to tomatoes the way the French did - as “Love Apples.” In 1812, James published the first known tomato-based ketchup recipe. Although Ketchup had existed in China for centuries, James added the tomato base - something that caught on not only in the United States but also in England. For his unique recipe, James used tomato pulp, spices, and brandy. Unlike many other recipes, James did not use sugar or vinegar. He named his recipe “Love-Apple Catsup." Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
Relay Iowa has been called the longest relay in the world. Each June, teams of up to 12 gather in Sioux City to make the 339-mile trek over three days and two nights to Dubuque. After being canceled for the first time in 2020 due to the pandemic, race organizers made the difficult decision to forge ahead this year with fewer teams and more safety precautions. The event has raised more than $100,000 for Restoring Hope Village, a group of homes for orphaned children in South Africa, as well as several Iowa-based charities. Covering challenging and beautiful terrain over 339 miles, Relay Iowa truly is the RAGBRAI of running. Listen to hear more. In this episode, we continue our investigation of the Great Plains Bison with a visit to 777 Bison Ranch near Rapid City, South Dakota. Owner Mimi Hilenbrandt and fellow operations manager Moritz Espy gave us a tour of the pastures and corrals. Along the way, we discussed differences and similarities between bison and cattle, the possibility of a buffalo commons, their business model and how it affects the bison, and how their decades of Holistic Management and bison grazing have led to regeneration of the prairie landscape. We also discussed a few of the complex questions the bison forces us to wrestle with. You can find them at In the episode I refer to a book about restoration bison ranching. It's called A Wild Idea, by Dan O'brien of Wild Idea Buffalo Company, whom you'll hear from next episode. Michael DiGiorgio recorded the banjo-bird jams I'm using in the intro and ending. You can find his amazing nature art at . Mike says that if you'd like to buy the album of his nature-banjo jams, you can find his email on his website and he can mail you a CD.
One World Enterprises Owner Jeff Meade joins us live from Bloomington, Indiana!
We rupture the infamous "fourth wall" of theatre, going behind the scenes with Rob Neill '91, founding member of the New York Neo Futurists, to discuss their unique brand of performance, which lies somewhere between improv, sketch comedy, and avant-garde theatre. We also talk with Ellen Mease about the more traditional theatrical world of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, which Mease directed this semester. She shares what Grinnell's theatre has meant to her, 40 years after she first directed her first production of the show.
This episode of Muse Ecology is the first in this four part series beginning to explore humankind's relation to the bison in the Great Plains of North America. This buffalo series features diverse voices of folks involved in the bison's return that Alison and I met on our buffalo investigation journey in February 2018. While the next three episodes feature entrepreneurs and ranchers who are working to restore bison to the landscape, this first episode features voices of wildlife advocates who see the buffalo as a wild elder whose right to roam long precedes our recent human constructs. The first visit on our buffalo journey was with the Buffalo Field Campaign, a volunteer-run organization that exists to defend the dignity and freedom of the last continuously wild herd of buffalo in North America, in Yellowstone National Park. Founded over 20 years ago by Lakota Grandmother Rosalie Littlethunder and videographer Mike Mease, through documentation and advocacy, the BFC seeks to promote awareness of the story and management of the Yellowstone bison, and to influence policy to allow them to roam free like the other wild ones. At just over two and a half hours this episode ended up a bit long, but felt like one story to be released together, so I divided it up into chapters like an audio book or radio play, and created a table of contents with minute and second, to make it easy to restart if you have to take a break. 00:00:52 Introduction to the Buffalo Series 00:09:17 Arrival at BFC 00:09:46 Chapter 1: The First Annual Rosalie Littlethunder Memorial Walk 00:15:44 Rosalie Memorial Circle 00:29:27 Chapter 2: Buffalo Awareness in Bozeman 00:29:31 More Words From Karen Littlethunder and Cheryl Angel 00:35:04 Awareness Rally Grooves 00:38:53 Chapter 3: Ski Patrol and Share Frog 00:38:55 A Daily Meeting 00:45:55 Buffalo Patrol 00:52:96 A Wild Lullaby for Share Frog 00:57:05 Chapter 4: Jimmy Brings an Important Message 01:09:46 Chapter 5: A Conversation with Stephanie Seay 01:11:24 Conversation with Stephanie 01:35:14 Chapter 6: A Conversation with Mike Mease 01:36:05 Details about the March webinar 01:36:46 Conversation with Mike 02:36:11 Closing Rumination and Introduction of Tanka Bar Episode You can connect with the Buffalo Field Campaign, to follow their work or arrange to volunteer for a while, at Michael DiGiorgio recorded the banjo-bird jams I'm using in the intro and ending. Welcome to the Audible Café Podcast! Today, my guest is Mike Mease, Campaign Coordinator and Co-Founder of the Buffalo Field Campaign. The Buffalo Field Campaign is the only group working both in the field and in policy arenas to stop the harassment and slaughter of America’s last truly wild, genetically pure buffalo in America. These buffalo are the direct descendants of the 30 to 60 million buffalo that used to roam continental North America, and their herd currently contains less than 4,000 members. The primary goal of the Buffalo Field Campaign is to create permanent year-round protection for bison and the ecosystem they depend on—including respect for the migratory needs of this long-exploited and clearly endangered species. Mike has been devoted to the cause of the wild buffalo for over 22 years. The fact that President Obama signed into law the National Bison Legacy Act, which designates the bison as the official mammal of the United States, has done nothing to protect the buffalo! The Act includes a disclaimer that the designation does not change the current management plan that is actually devastating the herd through bad management and what Mike and others aptly call “boxed hunts”. Buffalo Field Campaign staff and volunteers are in the process of shepherding through the federal court a case for listing the wild buffalo as an endangered species that would give these wonderful animals the protections they need to thrive - that is, so long as the Endangered Species Act thrives - which is another battle we all must join in. Securing Endangered Species Act status is a long haul and the Buffalo Field Campaign team needs your help! They are halfway through an 8-year process for designating this mammal as an endangered species, and what should be a straightforward and swift action is nothing of the kind. With the herd down to less than 4,000 members, this is an urgent call to action. So after you listen to this great interview with Mike Mease of the Buffalo Field Campaign, please visit their website at buffalofieldcampaign, org and please take note of their matching campaign before it ends on November 30th. They are a transparent and hard-working non-profit, and they are one of a kind in the nation - the only ones doing this work on behalf of the herd. So also visit their “Get Involved” page to take action on behalf of the last wild herd of buffalo so dearly in need of our protection. The “About Buffalo” section of the website is truly awesome and full of inspiring information about buffalo. The whole website is great. Thanks again to Mike Mease of Buffalo Field Campaign for taking the time to share his passion for the buffalo and his important work on their behalf.
