In this episode of our It's Personal series through the Gospel of John, we're joined by Pastor Mark, our lead pastor, Jay Austin and Harmony Charters, for a powerful conversation on John 3:22-30 titled “Confident Humility.” Together, we unpack the struggle of comparison—especially in the age of social media—and how it quietly robs us of joy and clarity in our purpose. We explore what it means to live like John the Baptist, who boldly declared, “I am not the Christ,” and modeled a life pointing others to Jesus, not himself. From the imagery of a wedding to the challenge of letting Christ increase while we decrease, we dive into what it means to live with true humility without losing confidence. You'll hear personal reflections, real-life examples, and honest dialogue about pride, identity, and what it really looks like to find freedom by embracing our God-given roles. Whether you're wrestling with comparison or seeking deeper purpose, this episode offers encouragement to step out of the spotlight and into joyful surrender.Website: www.churchatviera.comEmail: sharinggrace@churchatviera.com
In this message, we explore John 3: 1–36 and learn from the example of John the Baptist. In a world driven by ego and competition, John models a better way: humility rooted in knowing our identity and purpose in God's kingdom. Through this passage, we examine three kinds of people during a movement of God—nitpickers, competitors, and pointers—and discover how true joy and effectiveness come when we stop comparing and start pointing others to Jesus. Find out how confident humility sets us free from pride, fuels gratitude, and brings joy as we live not for our glory, but for Christ's.

You're not as good as you think. You don't have it all figured out. Stay focused. Do better….This is the characteristic of how great people think. It's not that they find failure in every success. They just hold themselves to a standard that exceeds what society might consider to be objective success. Because of that, they don't care much about what other people think; they care whether they meet their own standards. And these standards are much, much higher than everyone else's. - Ryan HolidayTwo competing emotions, confidence and insecurity, play significant roles in determining whether or not we reach our potential. Insecure individuals often seek external validation. With insecurity clouding their judgment, they interpret events and relationships differently, frequently perceiving threats where none exist. In contrast, confident but humble people understand the value they bring to their team, the mission, and the world. They recognize that they could improve and view themselves as works in progress. Their humility helps them acknowledge that they don't have all the answers and don't need to be perfect. They appreciate their mistakes and obstacles, using the pain they bring to learn and prevent future pain.Cultivating Confident Humility:* Be comfortable with who you are and who you are becoming. Stop fearing other people's opinions (FOPO)* Be a curious learner who values listening.* Be open-minded and avoid letting success or talents blind you.* Be self-aware and open to feedback.* Be a space giver, not a space taker. Relinquish control and attention. Don't feel threatened by the success of others or the mistakes that will inevitably happen.* Be imperfect - embrace imperfection – both yours and the world's.* Be direct and assertive, not passive-aggressive.* Be resilient. View setbacks as learning opportunities, not personal failures.* Be grateful for the help and the luck that got you here. You know you'll need more of it.A confidently humble person combines strength with humility, kindness with assertiveness, and success without vanity. Be confident in your skills and value, know what you know and don't know, and never stop learning. As leaders, our job isn't to 'fix' people but to help them reach their potential and improve the team. This might mean believing in people before they believe in themselves. Create an environment where they know you have their best interests at heart. Let them know where they stand and where they can go. They have to walk the path, but you can be there when they need a little help or believe in them.I asked a smart person this week for one piece of advice. He said to ask yourself this question:“What's it like to be on the other side of me?”If you found that helpful, grab this link and send it to a friend: https://kellyvohs.substack.com/p/cultivating-confident-humilityOnward, Kelly This is a public episode. Do you need to be saved? "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12 If there was any other way to restore mankind to God, then Jesus didn't have to die. But if Jesus had to die, then what else would be required? At the same time, all the work to save you or me is done by Jesus. Our job is to make a choice. We have no reason to boast. Even the power to choose came from God. But rather than take us home when we believe, we get to stay. Our job is to be part of the marketing strategy. Today, let's remember with humility that we have the answer. We didn't do anything to earn the answer. We don't deserve it. We're called to join our humility with confidence in Jesus. Humility is simply the knowledge that there is nothing in us that can save us. Our testimony is to live according to this balance. Let others know your confidence in Jesus and your accurate understanding of your own ability to be right. We're called to display this confident humility. Well, it's either confident humility or humble confidence. Jesus did the work. He loves us. He is the answer to the greatest dream we could have, to be known and loved forever. If you don't know that answer or if you want to know more, let me know. Send a note to mike@followerofone.org or call 918-899-4239. Anne Wong is Legal Transformation Leader at BHP and an absolute power house in the burgeoning legal operations industry. I first met Anne when I was teaching at Deakin Law School, and where she was a penultimate year student. Even then, she was super clear on her ambition to pursue a career in legal operations and sought advice from me as to how to get there. In her relatively short, but super impressive legal career (she only qualified to practice in 2019) she has traversed various law firm roles to land inhouse at the BHP Legal Transformation team. In this honest conversation Anne shares with us: - What it is like to be a first-generation lawyer - Her quest for “confident humility” - The importance of staying true to her values and goals - Behind the scenes of her accelerated career trajectory into legal operations - Her brilliant ‘week of enlightenment' - What she actually does on a day-to-day basis - Her decision to relinquish her practicing certificate - Her decision to move inhouse when her law firm career was excelling. I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation between friends and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you. When we think of the word ‘Humble' we often think of meek, submissive, unassertive and lowly. Some people see humility as a strength and others view it as a weakness. The word ‘Confident' usually brings to mind words like self-assured, powerful and worthy. Confidence is nearly always seen as a positive trait in leadership. I think that many of us would say that to be confident and humble at the same time presents a bit of a conundrum. How do we step into confidence and remain humble enough to sit at the feet of others and glean from them? In This Podcast we will dive into all these questions. Enjoy!!!
We all want to be influential, which is the ability to make our ideas and words take hold and make a difference. But being pushy and overbearing is exactly the wrong way to go about it.
In a culture that is self-obsessed, being truly human means becoming self-less through the sacrifice and example of our saviour Jesus who humbled himself on the cross for our sake. Dan Kent, author of Confident Humility, visits from St. Paul, Minnesota to teach us about becoming our full selves without becoming full of ourselves.
Dan Kent is an author and pastor at Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also co-hosts with Greg Boyd a podcast called "Apologies & Explanations with Greg Boyd." Dan joined me way back in episode 21 to share his personal story and insights from his book "Confident Humility". So if you want to know more about Dan's back story, then go back and listen to that episode. Dan also has his Master's in Christian Thought from Bethel Seminary and is a major proponent of Open Theism and his friend Greg Boyd's "warfare view." We've talked on several occasions together about why I am no longer convinced by the Open view and thought it might be fun to hash out some of our differences together in a way that lets other people listen in. After I completed my finale of the Problem of Evil series, several listeners in our Patreon community reached out with questions and respectful objections in defense of the open view, so I thought it would be a good idea to work through some specific issues relating to open theism, Satan and spiritual warfare, and even animal suffering & veganism! Joel is an award-winning high school teacher and championship soccer coach who is also an author and public speaker, focusing on leadership and education. He is a husband, a father, and he is currently working on his first book about leadership, due to be published in early summer. Joel has been studying leadership in different ways since 2000 when he first began studying servant leadership at Covenant College. Joel has always loved that model of servant leadership, but the concepts of Confident Humility really became a core part of his identity following his divorce. After his divorce, Joel was forced to confront the fact that almost all the negatives in his life were the result of his own pride, and therefore the only solution is humility. These lessons then became applicable in every area of his personal and professional life, from his second marriage, to his parenting, to the way in which he teaches, coaches, speaks, and writes. And Joel believes these same concepts and principles are applicable in every area of every else's life as well. Questions You'll Hear Today: 1) Why is rethinking leadership so crucial to building a successful business? 2) What is Confident Humility, and what does it have to do with business and entrepreneurship? 3) How do these principles apply to my specific business venture or to various business models? 4) Why does a leader's attitude and approach matter even more than any product or service? 5) Why do you focus so much on relationships when discussing these topics? 6) Do these principles apply well to a large group, or just in small groups?
