COVID has been one of the biggest challenges to face education and assessment in years. In this podcast, Simon Trevers, Chief Strategy Officer for the Surpass team at BTL, discusses the ongoing challenges faced by COVID and how there is now an opportunity for awarding organisations to make a positive step towards technology. Simon discusses formative and continuous summative assessment in detail and how, by undertaking a step-by-step transition to technology-based assessments, these forms of assessment can enhance the examination process. Doing so would mitigate the risk associated with 100% terminal assessment programmes and improve the value of the assessment experience for students, teachers, and education leaders. About Simon Trevers, Chief Strategy Officer Simon has worked in the educational and assessment technology industry for over 14 years and has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering a diverse range of interactive learning platforms, learning management systems and online assessment services for customers across the UK and overseas. Simon’s skills and experience encompass product management, product development, commercial management and solutions architecture. Simon’s role as Chief Strategy Officer at BTL involves working alongside clients and industry partners to understand business needs and operational challenges, and to identify future trends in assessment. Prior to working in educational and assessment technology, Simon was involved in healthcare communications technology for almost 10 years, delivering services to hospitals globally. Having graduated from The University of Reading with a degree in Geography, Simon’s more recent professional qualifications include an ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management and he is also a Certified Scrum Product Owner. simon.trevers@surpass.com

There’s little doubt as to the value assessment can bring to the classroom. But what if we are underutilizing assessments and under-appreciating the areas where they can lead to insights? Tune in today to hear Dr. Valentina Iturbe-LaGrave, Director of Inclusive Teaching Practices at the University of Denver, talk about sources of trauma in our students’ lives; how the chemistry of the traumatized brain interrupts deep learning; and how low-stakes, alternative assessments facilitate deep, transformative learning, and are a first step toward ensuring our students are supported in a way that acknowledges trauma. Dr. Iturbe-LaGrave and Dr. Case discuss the nature of trauma-informed pedagogy and how the insights gleaned from low-stakes assessments can translate to large gains in traditional assessments. In this episode, Dr. Colin Roche kicks off a series of episodes on the subject of Grading, Assessment, and Evaluations where he takes a long, hard, honest and uncensored look at the way we grade students in our schools today and report their learning progress. Most aspects of grading and reporting have been around forever and reflect traditions that have been a part of our education system since the early 1900's. Though these traditions are entrenched in our education culture and part of everyone's school experience, it doesn't mean that they work, are accurate, or are in the best interest for our students. In this first episode of the series, Dr. Roche defines and discusses formative and summative assessment, and why teachers first need to understand their uses before designing their assessment instruments. He goes on to describe why effective grades need to be accurate, meaningful, consistent and support learning, while reviewing the three underpinning issues of fairness, motivation and objectivity & professional judgement. A few of the many resources that influence our approach are the books, "On Your Mark" by Thomas Guskey, "A Repair Kit For Grading" by Ken O'Connor, and "Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses" by Mary Huba and Jann Freed.
