TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts are normal for our students to use. Wouldn't it be neat to use those formats to educate them? Anneke is a social media expert and the founder of pink sparrow social (her students call her the queen of Reels). Anneke completed a degree in business marketing and then went on to create a social media agency managing social media accounts for a few years before Covid restrictions shut down most of her clients businesses and most of her contracts were put on hold. Rather than dwell on the loss of business, Anneke decided to use this as an opportunity to use her accrued knowledge of the industry and apply it to her Instagram and built Pink Sparrow Social. Without any paid ads or investment (other than her time) Anneke initially grew her account from less than 1k followers to 100k in just 3 months and currently she has almost 1/4 of a million followers and generates a full time passive income through a selection of online products which includes her Instagram coaching program - The Reels Academy We share thoughts about: Introducing Anneke 1:06Why young people fancy short videos? 3:51How to start making short reels? 6:44The role of scrolling 10:03"Series style" and "Role play": a couple of ways to create content 11:31Another idea for structuring a reel, 15:24Example of doing a reel 16:35Techniques to make a reel interesting 19:18Why “Call to action” doesn't work every time, 20:32Have fun with it is the important part. 23:10Is there a difference for students and teachers in making a reel 25:49First steps into creating reels 31:36Remember this #1 thing 35:42 Find out more about Anneke at: https://www.pinksparrowsocial.com.au/ Instagram: @pinksparrowsocial

Will teaching ever be worth it? Bad news first: Teachers, especially new teachers, are often undervalued, underequipped, and unprepared for the reality of high-poverty classrooms. The result is frustration, fear, and a loss of idealism and enthusiasm, fatal flaws for someone facing 30 fourth-graders and a besieged principal every day. Hopelessness can set in fast. But before you quit, realize this: Not only can you survive, you can experience the joy and satisfaction you expected when you first decided to teach. Besides, your students need you. Bestselling author Ruby Payne, Ph.D. was once where you are now. Her insights and solutions are at once personal and professional, and they will help guide you to the knowledge, resources, and mindset you need to create a future story of success and satisfaction.
Guests: Colby Gregg and Kelly Claflin from Ohio State University, Tim Buttles from University of Wisconsin River Falls, and Laura Greenhaw from the University of Florida “Teaching tools are designed to help you. Use ones that are cool and effective but mostly ones that make it easier on you. If they get your students involved and meet your objectives, they're the right tools for you.”

The ability to stand and deliver a powerful presentation that engages the whole minds of our audience is more important today than ever before, partly because of the fantastic reach that out talks can have!In this episode, Dr. Colin Roche shares information from two books on presenting, titled "I Can See You Naked" by Ron Huff, and "The Naked Presenter" by Garr Reynolds.Presenting Naked basically means connecting and engaging with an audience in a way that is direct, honest and clear. It means putting your audience first and being transparent, while allowing yourself to be vulnerable and exposed. Presenting Naked embraces, the idea of simplicity, integrity, and passion and is far more satisfying for both the presenter and the audience. Podcasting has been around for many years but has recently gained new interest and popularity due to new topics and celebrity hosts, as well as easier access to mobile technology apps that let you easily download and listen to podcasts “on the go”.Podcasts are a versatile medium which have also become more and more a part of education. Today students may encounter podcasts alongside other materials in their reading and listening assignments and teachers are starting to use podcasts in place of lecture videos, with some faculty even asking students to create their own podcast episodes to demonstrate their learning. Teaching is a cognitive skill just like any other, so how can we increase the space in our working memory, our factual subject knowledge, and our procedural knowledge? Well, listeners to this podcast have heard me say many times, it is virtually impossible to become proficient at a mental task without extended practice. Therefore, our best bet for improving our teaching is to practice teaching! In this episode, Chef Roche discusses a few strategies that he recommends, including peer observations using video, as well a keeping a teaching diary and / or starting a discussion group with fellow teachers.Hosted by Dr. Professor Chef Colin Roche, this podcast is available for free in any app that supports podcasts (Sticher, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.) or through this link: www.chefeducator.comTo get more information on this topic, as well as many others, including charts, templates and examples, be sure to check out the book titled "Culinary Educators' Teaching Tools and Tips" which is published by Kendall Hunt (https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/culinary-educators-teaching-tools-and-tips)If you would like a copy of the "Videotaping Your Teaching Checklist" that was mentioned in this podcast episode, click this link - https://foodmedianetwork.com/chefeducator.SPONSORSHIP/ SUPPORT:If you like the show, or this episode, why not show your support by buying us a cup or two of coffee to help defray some of the out-of-pocket expenses? A recent survey of undergraduate students revealed that 84% studied by rereading their notes or textbook. Despite its popularity, rereading has inconsistent effects on student learning. In addition, rereading does not always enhance students' understanding of what they read, and any benefits of rereading, over just a single reading, may not be long lasting. Though rereading might be relatively easy for students to do, they should be encouraged to use other strategies when they revisit their text and notes. In this episode, Chef Roche discusses one strategy he recommends which is called practice testing.Hosted by Dr. Professor Chef Colin Roche, this podcast is available for free in any app that supports podcasts (Sticher, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.) or through this link: www.chefeducator.comTo get more information on this topic, as well as many others, including charts, templates and examples, be sure to check out the book titled "Culinary Educators' Teaching Tools and Tips" which is published by Kendall Hunt (https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/culinary-educators-teaching-tools-and-tips)SPONSORSHIP/ SUPPORT:If you like the show, or this episode, why not show your support by buying us a cup or two of coffee to help defray some of the out-of-pocket expenses? Almost every student becomes angry at some point in school. After all, anger is a normal human emotion. And it is not a problem if a student becomes angry, as long as he or she expresses their feelings appropriately. However, it is a problem if they express their anger in a way that is hurtful to those around them or is disruptive to a class. A student who displays angry outbursts can throw a classroom into turmoil. They can also trigger strong feeling in us as the teacher. Our challenge in working with a student whose emotional temperature often reaches the boiling point is to first control our own feelings, as well as those of the student. And in this episode, you will learn various tips and techniques that can help you!Hosted by Dr. Professor Chef Colin Roche, the podcast is available for free in any app that supports podcasts (Sticher, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.) or through this link: www.chefeducator.comTo get more information on this topic, as well as many others, including charts, templates and examples, be sure to check out the book titled "Culinary Educators' Teaching Tools and Tips" which is published by Kendall Hunt (https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/culinary-educators teaching-tools-and-tips)SPONSORSHIP / SUPPORT:If you like the show, or this episode, why not show your support by buying us a cup or two of coffee to help defray some of the out-of-pocket expenses? Teacher, maker, artist. Audrey is the kind of person who seeks challenges and always finds a way through, not around, them. She is a person who truly understands the value of experience in perfecting craft and learning the most important lessons. Whether it's teaching classes in the male-dominated makerspace world or creating her own art through metalworking, the impact of hands-on, in-person experiences have always been transformative for her and those who engage with her work. On today's episode, Audrey and I chat everything from the influence of the local Baltimore music scene, welding, medieval hand tools (and torture devices), and the diversity of thought in makerspaces.
