Let us know what you think about the podcast!Episode 220: Grandfatherhood and Legacy: How to Be Involved Without InterferingWhat kind of presence do you bring into your family? When you walk into a room, do people relax, or do they brace? Do your adult children feel supported by you, or do they feel like they have to manage your reactions? Do your grandchildren experience you as a steady, loving presence, or are they sometimes pulled into tension that really belongs between the adults? In this Father's Day episode of Coaching Your Family Relationships, we're continuing our two-part series on fathers in the second half of life. This episode focuses on grandfathers, family legacy, and the powerful role a grandfather can play in the emotional health of the family system.Grandfathers matter deeply. Your relationship with your grandchildren can shape their emotional wellbeing, their sense of family identity, and the patterns they carry forward. But grandfatherhood also comes with a delicate balance. How do you stay close without overstepping? How do you support your adult children without interfering in their parenting? How do you become involved in a way that strengthens the family instead of creating more tension?Using a family systems lens, we'll talk about the grandfather's role in the three-generation family system. We'll look at triangulation, emotional patterns, estrangement, repair, and what it means to leave a legacy of connection instead of control. In this episode, you'll learn:Why grandfathers have a powerful influence on the emotional wellbeing of grandchildren and the larger family systemHow to be an involved grandfather without interfering, undermining parents, or creating family conflictWhat triangulation looks like in real life, especially when grandchildren or in-laws get pulled into adult tensionWhy repairing the direct relationship with your adult child matters more than trying to access the family through the grandchildrenHow to think about your third-act legacy and the emotional patterns you want to stop passing forwardThis episode is for grandfathers who want to matter in the lives of their children and grandchildren, but who also want to show up with more wisdom, humility, and emotional maturity. It is also for adult children, spouses, and family members who are trying to understand the complex role grandfathers play in family relationships.Your legacy is not only what you provide, what you teach, or what you leave behind. Your legacy is also the emotional climate you create. It is the way people feel in your presence. It is the patterns you choose to keep and the patterns you finally decide to set down. You do not have to be a perfect father or grandfather to make a difference. You can begin by becoming more grounded, more honest, and more willing to work on the direct relationships in front of you.Because when a grandfather becomes more emotionally present, less reactive, and more connected, that change does not stop with him. It echoes through the generations that come after him. Tina Gosney is the Family Conflict Coach. She works with parents who have families in conflict to help them become the grounded, confident leaders their family needs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you want support putting what you're learning into practice, come join The Connection Community in Bridge to Connection. "I love for people to come when the pipes leak instead of when they burst." — Vonda TiedelWhy do so many couples wait years before finally seeking help? What actually happens in the therapy room, and what is the therapist really doing? Are there situations where couples therapy can do more harm than good?Couples therapy is one of the most misunderstood tools in marriage. People assume it means something's broken, that the therapist will pick a side, or that it's too late. None of that is true.In this episode, Kenna sits down with two trusted colleagues and fellow licensed marriage and family therapists, Ben Baker and Vonda Tiede, for an honest, behind-the-curtain conversation about what couples therapy actually looks like, who it's for, and what gets in the way of people starting sooner. They cover the myths that keep couples stuck, the difference between a disagreement and a full-blown fight, what "containment" really means in the therapy room, and the specific situations where couples therapy is actually contraindicated. They also share the one thing they each wish every couple knew before they ever walked through the door.Whether you're considering couples therapy, currently in it, or just curious what happens in that room, this episode will give you real answers, not vague reassurances.Chapters(00:00) - "Your marriage is my client"(00:28) - Welcome and guest introductions(02:14) - Highs and Hards(08:25) - Why couples therapy feels so mysterious(09:35) - How Ben and Vonda chose marriage and family therapy(14:01) - Individual therapy vs. couples therapy(18:38) - Myths and misconceptions therapists want to dispel(33:56) - When to come and when to wait(52:18) - The one thing each therapist wishes every couple knew(58:03) - Challenge by choice(01:00:27) - Closing prayerLinks and Resources:Martin Center for Integration - https://martincenterforintegration.comVonda Tiede, LMFT - https://www.vondatiede.com/Related episodes with Ben Baker: Men and Mental Health, Men in Relationships, Triangulation - https://martincenterforintegration.com/show-notes-70Related episodes with Vonda Tiede: Marital Intimacy, What Happens in Individual Therapy - https://martincenterforintegration.com/show-notes-21Support the showThank you for listening, and a very special thank you to our community of supporters!Join our email list and never miss an episode or an eventVisit us online at thiswholelifepodcast.com, and send us an email with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.Follow us on Instagram & FacebookInterested in more faith-filled mental health resources? // Triangulation stoppen: https://www.sonjakopplin.com/angebote/triangulation-stoppen/ -------- Weitere Ressourcen Mein Buch "Hochsensibilität & Trauma" verstehen: https://www.sonjakopplin.com/buch/ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sonja_kopplin/ Blog: http://www.sonjakopplin.com/blog/ Angebote: http://www.sonjakopplin.com/angebote/ Newsletter: http://www.sonjakopplin.com/newsletter/

In this episode of Cut to the Chase: with Gregg Goldfarb, South Florida mass tort attorney Gregg Goldfarb sits down with trial attorney Jason Joy and survivor advocate Curtis Garrison to give a critical update on the legal battles reshaping how America handles child sexual abuse cases — from landmark NDA legislation to the corruption hiding inside the Boy Scouts bankruptcy. Join Gregg, Jason, and Curtis on Cut to the Chase: as they discuss: What Trey's Law is and why its federal passage could be a game-changer for every abuse survivor in America Why over 24 states have now opened or eliminated statute of limitations windows — and which states are next How the Boy Scouts $2.5 billion bankruptcy became a case study in litigation financing gone wrong Why survivors are receiving far less than they deserve — and who is really profiting The disturbing connections between Epstein survivors, Boy Scouts victims, and the same attorneys and institutions appearing on both sides Why the window to file may be closing in your state — and what to do right now What survivors, advocates, and concerned citizens can do today to help move the needle KEY MOMENTS 00:00 — Triangulation tactics used to divide survivor communities 00:35 — Gregg introduces Curtis Garrison and Jason Joy 01:10 — Trey's Law update: NDA bans for child sex abuse settlements 02:30 — Federal bipartisan legislation: Cruz, Gillibrand, Klobuchar and more co-sponsor the Treys Act 04:00 — Statute of limitations updates across states 05:30 — Maryland caps liability — what it means for survivors 06:30 — How to get involved: SOScsa.org and advocacy steps 08:00 — Epstein survivors and the connections to Boy Scouts 10:00 — The common denominators: power, wealth, and institutions 12:00 — Litigation financing explained — how lawyers are profiting at victims' expense 18:00 — What survivors should look for when hiring an attorney 22:00 — Boy Scouts bankruptcy: potential malpractice and Congressional investigation ahead   Guest Bios Jason Joy Jason Joy is a trial attorney who represents survivors of child sexual abuse, including Boy Scouts claimants and clergy abuse victims. In Episode 6 of The Zodiac Killer, we return to San Francisco—two weeks after Lake Berryessa—for the case that changed everything: the murder of taxi driver Paul Stine in Presidio Heights on October 11, 1969.This attack was different. Different victim. Different setting. Different risk. Under streetlights, with witnesses watching from across the road, the killer lingered—cutting a piece of Stine's shirt, wiping the cab, and walking away with eerie calm.We break down the full Presidio Heights timeline, what the Robbins witnesses reported, the police response, and the error that may have helped the Zodiac escape: a broadcast description that sent officers looking for the wrong suspect. We also examine the evidence that made this the most significant Zodiac crime scene: bloody latent fingerprints, the composite sketch, the shirt piece mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Zodiac's chilling escalation—threats against schoolchildren and a school bus. Finally, Simon and Tom dig into the investigative angles: patterns, escalation, and what the “gap” before the Zodiac claimed responsibility might suggest. If you're researching the Zodiac case, this episode is your deep dive into the murder many consider the turning point—and the last confirmed Zodiac killing.00:00 Two Weeks of Silence… Then Zodiac Strikes in San Francisco01:19 Who Was Paul Stine? The team is thrilled to welcome Meredith Page and Liz Livingston, the creative duo behind the Atlanta-based design firm Page House Studio. With a combined 15 years of experience in interiors and fashion, they joined forces in 2023 to create a studio that focuses on bespoke design and a curated collection of accessories—specifically, their signature pedestals. Meredith and Liz join Caroline, Taryn, and Liz to discuss how they transitioned from coworkers to business partners, the power of elevating everyday objects, and why "the edit" is the most crucial step in any design project. They share their secrets for creating dynamic vignettes, the importance of "triangulation" in styling, and why a pedestal is the missing ingredient your bookshelf needs. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Elevate with Pedestals: Give your small treasures and collectibles the importance they deserve by placing them on a pedestal. This adds instant height and architecture to a vignette, preventing small items from getting lost on a shelf or table.  Master "Triangulation": When styling a surface, visualize a triangle to guide your arrangement. Group items to create high and low points (the peaks and corners of the triangle) to establish a natural flow and rhythm for the eye.  Photograph to Edit: If a room feels cluttered or "off," take a photo of it with your phone. Viewing the space through a lens often highlights imbalances or clutter that your eye misses in person, helping you know exactly what to remove. The third episode in our family systems series explores triangulation, the pattern where a two-person relationship becomes unstable so you pull in a third person to stabilize it. Instead of dealing with issues directly with your spouse, you complain to your mom, get your best friend to tell them they're wrong, focus all your energy on the kids, or text your sister about your marriage. Triangulation feels safer than direct conflict because it gives you validation and emotional support without vulnerability, but it doesn't actually solve anything. In this Thanksgiving episode, we're settling in together—just like we would the night before a big holiday—to talk about the messy, heartfelt, complicated world of family dynamics. Even though both of us are having quieter Thanksgivings this year, we're deep in our own real-life family seasons, and this conversation comes straight from the thick of it. We explore why the holidays stir up so much, why cut-offs have become so common, and how we can show up for ourselves without losing connection to the people we care about. We also dive into emotional tolerance, boundaries that actually work in real life, and the surprising ways expectations shape our holiday experience. If you've ever found yourself caretaking, peace-keeping, bracing for a “difficult someone,” or wondering how to handle the big personalities at the table—this episode will meet you right where you are. Episode Highlights: [0:03] – Opening the Thanksgiving conversation and why this episode feels especially timely [1:16] – How our own holiday plans are shaping the way we're thinking about family this year [2:49] – The pressure to perform during the holidays and why “doing less” may feel better [3:31] – Colette's recent family gatherings and the emotional residue they stirred up [4:17] – Real stories from reunions and why so many adults are dealing with family cut-offs [5:34] – How cut-offs impact entire family systems and why they rarely bring relief [7:21] – Understanding emotional bandwidth and the “dial” approach to relationships [9:46] – Avoidance, repair, and why making the first move feels so vulnerable [11:46] – When someone can't meet you emotionally—and how to interpret that [14:51] – The painful power dynamics created by the least emotionally developed family member [16:29] – Caring for everyone but yourself: preparing meals, hosting, and old relational wounds [17:22] – The essential role of expectations and how they can make or break a holiday [18:46] – Triangulation, family cliques, and protecting your emotional space [20:00] – Setting boundaries without being pulled into old patterns [21:58] – Self-care strategies when staying with—or hosting—challenging family members [23:20] – The nuance of “don't abandon yourself” and holding two truths at once [25:56] – Choosing what's worth addressing—and what you can let go for your own peace [28:09] – Why cut-offs are increasing and the need for a deeper cultural conversation [29:45] – Setting limits, protecting yourself, and managing difficult personalities [30:55] – Releasing holiday perfectionism and letting the day be what it is [33:14] – The power of intention-setting and micro-gratitudes to shape your mindset [34:23] – How to sooPre-order The Cost of Quiet now! He was most recently featured on an episode of Awkward Silences Podcast, and has some upcoming webinars. With a career spanning both in-house industry roles and consulting/agency leadership, Brett has built and led high-performing, multi-method research teams for Fortune 50 companies. His past roles include Head of Design Research: Customer at Walmart and Lead of Product Research at Lowe's, where he drove customer-focused innovation and strategy. Beyond professionally, Brett has trained Seeing Eye dogs for the past 25 years, combining his love of service and animals, and is also a licensed pilot who enjoys navigating the skies somewhere new whenever possible. Brett's unique blend of professional expertise and personal passions reflects his curiosity, drive, and commitment to making an impact. In our conversation, we discuss:* How Brett discovered triangulation only later in his career and why it changed everything about how he approached impact.* What meta-analysis actually means in practice, and why it's an underrated starting point for faster, smarter research.* Why researchers need to stop acting like lone wolves and start working like strategic collaborators.* How to balance qualitative and quantitative data without waiting for things to be perfect.* The small, consistent actions that build trust and how they differ when you're in-house versus agency-side.Some takeaways:* Early in his career, Brett saw research as “the answer.” Later, he realized that data triangulation, pulling from primary research, internal metrics, heuristics, and third-party sources, helped him tell richer, more balanced stories that actually got traction. It wasn't about perfection or overloading people with data. It was about showing how user needs and business goals intersect, and building stories from multiple truths rather than a single source.* Rather than constantly commissioning new work, Brett champions meta-analysis, which involves reviewing what's already been done across different departments. That might include past research, customer insights, agency data, or marketing reports. Doing this upfront reveals known truths, uncovers gaps, and often means you only need to research 2 out of 10 questions, not all 10. It makes you faster, more relevant, and a better partner to the business.* Trying to solve everything at once kills momentum. Brett advises researchers to start with small, tangible wins, like answering two key questions fast with an unmoderated test. Showing up early with something useful, rather than disappearing and delivering a polished report weeks later, builds credibility. These quick contributions earn you the right to do deeper, more strategic work down the line.* Too many researchers say they want a seat at the table, then go off and work solo. Brett emphasizes bringing stakeholders along for the ride and letting them weigh in, see progress, and feel ownership. That doesn't mean caving to their agenda. It means understanding what they care about, folding it into your framing, and using that shared language to build alignment and influence.* One of the most powerful habits Brett adopted: releasing insights in milestones. Whether you're in-house or agency, think in chunks, such as sharing the competitive analysis while you're still synthesizing interviews. Share directional trends while still in the field. Transparency builds trust, helps teams move faster, and reminds everyone that research is ongoing, not just a one-time delivery. Show them how the sausage is made, not just the final plate.Where to find Brett:* LinkedIn* Transforming Insights into Results: Advancing influence in Corporate landscapes from the bottom up* Innovate or Imitate: Redefining Design and Research on our Terms Stop piecing it together. They explore how couples often get caught in “who's right” battles instead of understanding each other's emotional experiences and family conditioning. The conversation moves from examples like holiday conflicts and boundary differences to practical strategies for curiosity, validation, and creating teamwork when families collide. Main Talking Points: - Holidays & expectations: balancing rest, traditions, and competing family rituals. - Boundaries & input: navigating unsolicited advice and over-involvement from in-laws. - Cultural & parenting differences: managing contrasting values, politics, or child-rearing styles. - Underlying emotions: shifting from “who's right” to sharing how it feels (e.g., feeling stuck, unseen, guilty). - Triangulation awareness: avoiding being pulled into sides or family alliances. - Repair & curiosity: using calm, validating conversations outside conflict to understand each other and build connection. In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop talks with Richard Easton, co-author of GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphones, about the remarkable history behind the Global Positioning System and its ripple effects on technology, secrecy, and innovation. They trace the story from Roger Easton's early work on time navigation and atomic clocks to the 1973 approval of the GPS program, the Cold War's influence on satellite development, and how civilian and military interests shaped its evolution. The conversation also explores selective availability, the Gulf War, and how GPS paved the way for modern mapping tools like Google Maps and Waze, as well as broader questions about information, transparency, and the future of scientific innovation. Learn more about Richard Easton's work and explore early GPS documents at gpsdeclassified.com, or pick up his book GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphones.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 – Stewart Alsop introduces Richard Easton, who explains the origins of GPS, its 12-hour satellite orbits, and his father Roger Easton's early time navigation work.05:00 – Discussion on atomic clocks, the hydrogen maser, and how technological skepticism drove innovation toward the modern GPS system.10:00 – Miniaturization of receivers, the rise of smartphones as GPS devices, and early mapping tools like Google Maps and Waze.15:00 – The Apollo missions' computer systems and precision landings lead back to GPS development and the 1973 approval of the joint program office.20:00 – The Gulf War's use of GPS, selective availability, and how civilian receivers became vital for soldiers and surveyors.25:00 – Secrecy in satellite programs, from GRAB and POPPY to Eisenhower's caution after the U-2 incident, and the link between intelligence and innovation.30:00 – The myth of the Korean airliner sparking civilian GPS, Reagan's policy, and the importance of declassified documents.35:00 – Cold War espionage stories like Gordievsky's defection, the rise of surveillance, and early countermeasures to GPS jamming.40:00 – Selective availability ends in 2000, sparking geocaching and civilian boom, with GPS enabling agriculture and transport.45:00 – Conversation shifts to AI, deepfakes, and the reliability of digital history.50:00 – Reflections on big science, decentralization, and innovation funding from John Foster to SpaceX and Starlink.55:00 – Universities' bureaucratic bloat, the future of research education, and Richard's praise for the University of Chicago's BASIC program.Key InsightsGPS was born from competing visions within the U.S. military. Richard Easton explains that the Navy and Air Force each had different ideas for navigation satellites in the 1960s. The Navy wanted mid-Earth orbits with autonomous atomic clocks, while the Air Force preferred ground-controlled repeaters in geostationary orbit. The eventual compromise in 1973 created the modern GPS structure—24 satellites in six constellations—which balanced accuracy, independence, and resilience.Atomic clocks made global navigation possible. Roger Easton's early insight was that improving atomic clock precision would one day enable real-time positioning. The hydrogen maser, developed in 1960, became the breakthrough technology that made GPS feasible. This innovation turned a theoretical idea into a working global system and also advanced timekeeping for scientific and financial applications.Civilian access to GPS was always intended. Contrary to popular belief, GPS wasn't a military secret turned public after the Korean airliner tragedy in 1983. Civilian receivers, such as TI's 4100 model, were already available in 1981. Reagan's 1983 announcement merely reaffirmed an existing policy that GPS would serve both military and civilian users. The Gulf War proved GPS's strategic value. During the 1991 conflict, U.S. and coalition forces used mostly civilian receivers after the Pentagon lifted “selective availability,” which intentionally degraded accuracy. GPS allowed troops to coordinate movement and strikes even during sandstorms, changing modern warfare.Secrecy and innovation were deeply intertwined. Easton recounts how classified projects like GRAB and POPPY—satellites disguised as scientific missions—laid technical groundwork for navigation systems. The crossover between secret defense projects and public science fueled breakthroughs but also obscured credit and understanding.Ending selective availability unleashed global applications. When the distortion feature was turned off in May 2000, GPS accuracy improved instantly, leading to new industries—geocaching, precision agriculture, logistics, and smartphone navigation. This marked GPS's shift from a defense tool to an everyday utility.Innovation's future may rely on decentralization. Reflecting on his father's era and today's landscape, Easton argues that bureaucratic “big science” has grown sluggish. He sees promise in smaller, independent innovators—helped by AI, cheaper satellites, and private space ventures like SpaceX—continuing the cycle of technological transformation that GPS began.

Triangulation doesn't stop just because you see it. In fact, once you recognize the pattern, the covert narcissist often pushes harder, twisting words, controlling the story, and pulling others into the tension. In this episode, Renee walks you through how to handle triangulation in every stage of the journey: While you're still in the relationship, how to stay grounded, refuse the bait, and protect your sanity. After you've left, how to respond to smear campaigns and stay out of the narcissist's narrative. When your kids are being triangulated, how to create emotional safety, speak calm truth, and keep them from being pulled into the conflict. You'll learn how to recognize when others are also in survival mode, how to extend grace without losing boundaries, and how to rebuild trust in yourself and the relationships that matter most. Because healing from triangulation isn't about winning the argument, it's about reclaiming your peace, protecting your children, and stepping out of someone else's story for good. Surviving Triangulation in a Polarized World It's time to reckon with one of the toughest questions in our current public discourse: “How can you think that?” Through stories from his personal and professional life, host Corey Nathan unpacks the emotionally draining phenomenon of triangulation—when we're caught in the middle of opposing viewpoints—and explores how we can respond with curiosity and conviction without losing our sanity. From navigating impossible conversations to confronting conspiracy theories (like the FBI staging Jan. 6?!), Corey challenges listeners to stay in tough conversations while guarding their own well-being. Drawing inspiration from a powerful essay by Christopher Armitage on The Existentialist Republic, this episode dives into the psychology of belief, the cost of defection from "reality bubbles," and the quiet strength of one-degree influence. Whether you're a peacemaker, bridge-builder, or just trying to keep your sanity in polarized times, this one's for you.

Triangulation is one of the covert narcissist's most insidious tools — because it's quiet, invisible, and devastating. It's how they control the narrative, twist communication, and turn the people you love against each other — all while pretending to be the calm, reasonable “peacekeeper.” In this episode, Renee shares two powerful stories that reveal how triangulation slowly poisons relationships: The first, a marriage where everything seems fine on the surface — until every conversation starts getting filtered through one partner's control. The second, a family where a covertly narcissistic parent quietly pits two siblings against each other for decades. Through these stories and a heartfelt reflection, you'll learn how triangulation erodes trust, damages connection, and keeps survivors trapped in confusion and self-doubt. Join Renee next week as she continues this conversation with how to step out of triangulation and begin repairing the relationships it's damaged. Because once you see the pattern, you can finally start breaking free from it. Bernie Maloney: The Triangulation Technique—Coaching Agile Teams Through Challenges Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Bernie identifies critical patterns that cause teams to self-destruct, with lack of clarity about intention being the most common culprit. When teams are treated as mere "task workers" without clear vision, strategy, or goals, they become depressed and directionless. Some teams seek forgiveness after failed experiments, while others get stuck seeking permission without taking enough self-leadership. Bernie emphasizes that waiting for direction is fundamentally self-destructive behavior, and Scrum Masters must create safety for teams to reach high performance. He introduces the coaching technique of triangulation, where problems become a third point that coach and coachee examine together, side by side, rather than facing each other in opposition. In this segment, we talk about “What the Duck”, a Lego Serious Play workshop. Featured Book of the Week: Start with Why by Simon Sinek Bernie champions "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek as essential reading for Scrum Masters working to transform team culture. He explains that compelling stories are how leaders truly influence others, following the sequence of Attention-Emotion-Reason. This book helps Scrum Masters understand that their job fundamentally involves changing culture, and leaders must demonstrate the change they want to see. Bernie connects this to the broader leadership challenge of developing coaching and mentoring skills within organizational structures. During this segment, we also refer to the following books:  Drive, By Dan Pink Change the Culture, Change the Game, by Connors et al. The Secret Language of Leadership, by Denning Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders, by Peshawaria The Geek Way, by McAfee Right Kind of Wrong, by Edmondson   Self-reflection Question: What patterns of self-destructive behavior might your teams be exhibiting, and how could you help them move from seeking permission to taking ownership? Domestic Abuse Awareness – Why a Year of Skills Training Matters In Episode 346 of the Counselling Tutor Podcast, your hosts Rory Lees-Oakes and Ken Kelly take us through this week's three topics: Firstly, in ‘Ethical, Sustainable Practice', they explore trauma-informed practice, focusing specifically on triangulation and trauma — how this hidden dynamic shows up in therapy and why recognising it is vital for working safely and effectively with clients. Then in ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Mel Ciavucco, a counsellor, trainer, and specialist in domestic abuse, about her new CPD lecture, Domestic Abuse Awareness. They discuss working with both survivors and perpetrators, how coercive control operates, and the importance of understanding abuse through an intersectional lens. And finally, in ‘Student Services', Rory and Ken explore why formal counselling training includes a full year focused entirely on counselling skills. They explain how these foundational skills form the bedrock of all therapeutic work and how they support students in becoming confident, competent practitioners. Triangulation and Trauma [starts at 03:49 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken explore triangulation and trauma, highlighting how this relational dynamic is often rooted in childhood experiences. Key points discussed include: Triangulation involves bringing a third party into a relationship to manage tension or avoid conflict. It can result in anxiety, hidden trauma, and ongoing relational difficulties if not recognised and addressed. Clients may unconsciously replay triangulation dynamics in therapy, such as trying to get the therapist to “side” with them. Working through triangulation requires consistency, boundaries, and an understanding of attachment repair. Therapists should avoid prematurely disrupting these dynamics without fully understanding their protective role. Domestic Abuse Awareness [starts at 32:58 mins] In this week's ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Mel Ciavucco, who draws from years of experience working with domestic abuse survivors and perpetrators. Key points from this conversation include: Mel's CPD lecture explores coercive control, stalking, spiritual abuse, and honor-based violence. Neurodivergence (like ADHD or autism) can sometimes contribute to harmful behaviours, though not excuse them. Perpetrator work is focused on supporting survivors by addressing the root causes of abuse. Therapists often fear working with perpetrators - but change is possible with the right approach and supervision. The Jane Monckton Smith homicide timeline is introduced as a powerful tool for risk assessment and understanding escalation. An intersectional approach is vital - Mel speaks about LGBTQ+ clients, gender-based violence, and inclusive practice. Why a Year of Skills Training Matters [starts at 1:04:38 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken explain the rationale behind dedicating an entire year of counselling training to developing core counselling skills. Key points include: Skills like active listening, reflection, and silence are often life-changing for students - not just for therapy, but in everyday relationships. Practicing these skills in triads helps students build confidence and competence before entering clinical work. These are advanced communication tools that improve personal and professional interactions across the board. Active listening helps us respond with understanding rather than advice or opinion. Silence, used well, can open space for deeper expression and processing. These foundational skills support the therapeutic relationship - where most healing takes place. Zach sits down with Dr. Shannon Curry—clinical psychologist, couples therapist, and founder of the Curry Psychology Group—for a nuanced discussion about what happens when couples “team up” against their therapist in session. Drawing on her forensic background and deep clinical insight, Shannon explores the subtle dynamics of triangulation, conflict avoidance, and the emotional strategies people learn early in life to stay safe in relationships. Together, Zach and Shannon talk about how the therapeutic space can trigger old wounds, what it takes to speak hard truths in love, and why being emotionally honest is often the most generous thing a partner can do. With warmth, curiosity, and real-life anecdotes, this episode speaks directly to the complexity of partnership—and the courage it takes to grow within one. Key Takeaways When Couples Turn on the TherapistShannon shares how one partner will sometimes rush to “protect” the other during difficult feedback, forming an unconscious alliance that derails growth—and puts the therapist in the role of the enemy. Emotional Manipulation as a Survival StrategyMany clients learn passive or controlling behaviors in childhood because direct expression wasn't safe. These aren't character flaws—they're adaptive tools that once worked. Conflict as a MirrorThe messiest moments in therapy often reflect old attachment wounds. Shannon emphasizes that when conflict emerges in session, it's not a sign of failure—it's a signal of something important beneath the surface. The Generosity of TruthZach proposes a compelling reframe: that emotional honesty—even when it's uncomfortable—is a gift of generosity in relationships. Shannon agrees, calling truth-telling a spiritual value in her work. The Truth Will Set You Free... EventuallySometimes growth hurts. Shannon shares a quote from her boarding school that sticks with her: “The truth will set you free—but first it will make you miserable.” Guest Info Dr. Shannon Curry Clinical and forensic psychologist Founder of Curry Psychology Group Certified in the Gottman Method High-profile expert witness and advocate for healthy relationships @currypsychgroup on Instagram Learn more about your ad choices.
